Okay this will be my last year hunting in the state of WA for a while so I want to make it a good one. Here's my question I have four preference points (squared to 16) and will be putting in for the following areas with an archery tag. Here's my questions what do ya'll think my chances of getting drawn are and do you think I should change any of my choices to different areas or should reaarange them at all. . And here's the most important ones for those of you that got drawn do you have any regrets for putting certain areas down or were you satisfied and would recommend me putting in for those areas. Thanks I've never been drawn before so here's hoping.
All of them are for branch bulls
1. Colockum
2. Peaches Ridge
3. Observatory
4. Goose Prairie.
And then I guess also what are youall going to put in for?

if you get drawn for peaches ridge let me know. i got a honey hole with some nice bulls.
just no spikes :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
Your last three choices should get you drawn with four points. I drew the goose prairie tag last fall, though I didn't fill it I was able to find a few different bulls. I don't have any regrets drawing that tag. As far as my choices for this coming year it depends on how many choices we will get, but if it stays the same I will be going with the cowiche, peaches ridge, goose prairie and rimrock in that order.
-
All right, i will give you my honest answer to you question.
#1 Peaches
#2 Observatory
#3 Colockum
#4 Goose Prairie.
I am under the assumption you are hunting riffle.
Many people may be upset with me for giving this info on a public forum. It seems some around here do not like to offer honest answers and lead others away, especially when it comes to area's they hunt, they want you as far away from them as they can. Or they will just send a PM to keep the general public from seeing it.
Sorry if i upset others for giving my honest opinion.

Prolly just points for me this year.......looking like a west-side archery or Idaho OTC.
-
Here is the link to how many points on average it took to draw a branched antler tag last year. Your last three choices were all in the 3 point range. Colockum was 7.5

Peaches, observatory, bumping and then Bethel in that order...and then give me a call when you draw... 8)
-
Basically gasman this one isn't too big of a deal. You can pretty much flip those around to any order and its about the same. i wouldn't put Observatory so high, but then again would have a hard time explaining why or why not. The big secret here is if you want a chance at being drawn here this year or if your points mean alot to you. If WDFW has their way, I'd probably start looking towards the blues for some of them rifle rut permits. LOL
-
Gasman no I am an archery hunter. Never thought I'd be but like sex I tried it once and got addicted to it. :chuckle:
Norsepeak LOL that was pretty sly and cool of you there. That was a pretty shameless plug but can't fault a guy for trying. We'll see but I dought that I can afford you guys.
Bowhuntin Thank you so much for that link I've been trying to find out how many points on average it took to draw a permit in some places. Thanks a bunch.
bankwalker Thanks for the info. That's how I am in the Colockum. I can show you branch bulls all day long just no spikes. I hope you don't charge too much like norsepeak. I told him I couldn't pay him money and he said that's alright he'd accept one arm and one leg. Which is decent of him, he said I could also pic which arm and which leg. :chuckle:
-
elk season is SO far away , i am fired up already. i start thinking about elk season earlier and earlier every year.trying for the blues this year.we will see :dunno:
-
I still stand by my order for archery.
I only put in for Peaches and Obserbatory, and i am a fellow string twanger.
I was drawn for the Bumping unit 5 years ago and will not put in for it again. So those that enter the draw have one less person to draw against (its a whole nother story).

lol ive offered up this location to everyone i know who gets drawn for bull tag. and yet noone has taken me up on it. i was in bulls all september long, and also seen them in there during modern firearm deer season aswell.

I would definately take you up on that offer. Beggars can't be choosers and I definately qualify as a dirty ole bum. I've never hunted Peaches during the late season so I don't really know where to go. In the late season however I see cows all over the place. I went back to my late season spot this year during the early season one day and didn't even see a track. So I am defiantely game.

Thanks for posting that link bowhuntin. Thats good information to be aware of!

yeah that was the problem with this area i hunt. the early season has sucked the last 3 years. so i moved 1 mile south and found elk in an area that i have always looked at on the map and drove past all the time on my way to my hunting area. never once had i ever seen anyone hunt this little area nor had i ever once seen any elk or deer tracks leading into or out of this area. they would fallow the main road right past this spot. the hill in and out is 10ft high brush that is impossible to get through (i tryd 3 different times this year)

Colock, for you I'd give a discount...only one arm, and maybe one eyeball just to make things interesting. ;)
-
Peaches Ridge is a good unit for quality bulls and would be my first choice. I am going to put in for peaches ridge(1st choice) if I get the multi season permit. I have 5 points and they give out a good number of archery tags. I just can't go back to the eastside for general season, I feel you have a better chance of harvesting a yeti than a spike on the east side :chuckle: Good luck on the draw, hope you get a masher!
-
Peaches is a good unit, but for archery I would possibly consider hunting the naches side. It is steep and has been really logged over in the past years, but not so much on the naches side.

Plus the Little Naches isn't open to the general hunt.

The last time I drew Peaches Ridge I got sent overseas during the season....blew my tags/points there. I'm going to try for Multi-season this year and MAYBE put in for Peaches for branch antlers. Last year i was hunting Peaches in general season and saw NICE bulls, lots of cows and ONE spike. That spike and i played tag in the Steep-N-Deeps until the anti-hunting ORV knuckleheads started riding through. They had a spotter up on Quartz with a radio, everytime I started to get close to the elk the spoter called the riders and they roared around up on the trails until the elk headed back into the deeps.
Ptui....was SERIOUSLY tempted to fill a KTM tag....
Partner and I spent a whole DAY up and down those hills and kept getting busted by riders...
Gah.

If I get to pick the arm then you have yourself a client. ;)
-
o.k., but no prosthetics....and no whining!!! ;)
-
Deal but if you take my arm before the hunt you'll have to draw my bow back for me. :)
-
I saw a guy on tv who could draw his bow with his teeth...pretty good shot too.

Really!!! That is awsome. That is a straight up BAMF (Bad ass mother F....er) I'm not nearly that tough. How about you take the arm after the season. I promise I wont re-neg on our deal. :chuckle:
-
I have 8 points put in for peaches and got a big 0
-
I can't believe everyone talking about Peaches being a great hunt, it blows. Put in for any other unit but Peaches I wouldn't waste my points. It's full of quad hunters, call-shy bulls if you can find one, tweekers and Obama fans. Look elsewhere for a good elk hunt!
-
There must be 2 peaches units....last time I hunted it we didn't see another hunter for 6 days straight and had around 6-8 bulls working everyday.
-
I believe most of us are refering to Little Naches unit wich is part of the Peaches Rigde C hunt to the south of Peaches Ridge. Peaches Ridge consist of two units to hunr 336 and 346.

:liar: Hmmm, is that because you have no points after drawing it a couple years in a row?
-
The places I usually like to go there are not any roads and thus the quads would not be a problem. In my experience in order to get to where the animals are you have to go past the line where most of your hunters go. This means you have to go at a minimum of two miles in before the hunting gets good. After that there are lots of animals.
Also a good rule of thumb for me is if I look at a deep ravine with deep dark timber and I say "that place looks like it sucks I don't want to go there" That's usually a good indication that there's elk down there. :twocents:
-
We see a lot of big bulls and harvest quite a few within a 100 yards of the roads sometimes...ya just gotta hunt, and know what you are doing. We killed a nice 6x7 down in the sage brush last season about 200 yards from a main paved road.
-
Have you thought about putting in for the "Woodland Park" tag?!?! The elk in that unit do not seem to fear humans.....making it easy to get a close shot! Only problem is there seems to be a lot of other people there, but it doesn't seem to bother the elk! I have seen some nice bulls! Kind of cheap to, only cost about $20 bucks to get in there for a whole day of hunting! If you get time you could probably also harvest some pretty cool exotics!!!! I haven't got anything the last couple of years....due to all the anti hunters chasing me around telling me I can't hunt! I don't really let there views bother me though! It is defiantly worth the time! So, I think you should give that a shot.....Oh, and please let me know how it turns out for ya!!!! Good luck!!!
LMAO :sas:

The one thing that you have to remember in WA, is that every year the point ave. will change. And even though the average to draw a branched antler tag might be in the 3 point range, lots of people with 11 points did not draw a tag. The point being that while more points will increase your chances, no amount of points will put you in the 'pretty sure I'll draw' category.

Well that may be true for modern firearm permits I don't think that is the case for archery special permits. There are way less people applying and the only ones with those amount of points are probably those guys that have been wanting a blues mtn. tag and don't want to waste all those points on another hunt. It should stay about the same for archery and even muzzle loaders.

Can I get some directions? a map maybe :)

Rackattack got it right. Anyone got any points out there. I'm plumb out and so is my hunting partners. Killed good 6's both times I drew it archery.
I still say the hunt sucks and noone else but me should put in for it. :) So stay away!
