Title: 257 Weatherby Mag - need help with reloading and set up
Post by: RubblesPH on February 23, 2009, 11:08:11 PM: I've been wanting a 257 Weatherby Mag for years, but I couldn't put down my 300 win mag.....to much sentimental value from all the hunting I've done with it. So last Saturday I had a few beers at the local SCI banquet and that Rem model 700 that was up for auction got the best of me. :brew:

Here's what I got:
Rem 700 SPS (syn stock), stainless, 26" barrel with new Rem X-mark trigger
Basses, rings
Pentax Pioneer 4.5-14X42, with ballistic plex
Remington's new Supercell recoil pad
Paid $725 for the set up

What I need to know:

Whats your opinion of the set up
would you change the trigger
Any experience with the scope - I usually go for higher end glass
what loads would you set up if you were reloading
If you have any good brass are you willing to part with it - let me know how much $

I like the velocity of the 100gr Barnes Tipped TSX (new for 09'). Fast with great penetration/wound path.

I plan on using it for long range WY deer and antelope and also for WA bear out to 450 yds (good broadside shots on the bears - the canyon/trails I sit on range from 225-450 yds). I've done a considerable amount of shooting both at the bench and in the field so I'm well aware of my limitations.

Need some help from guys that are in the know about the Remington, reloading and hands-on use of the 257 Mag.

i've heard of people getting rid of those trigger groups in exchange for jewels.
i am trying to work a deal to pick one up too, but am having trouble making time to get to oregon to finalize the deal.

i'd much rather have it be a markV ultralight, but it'll do for now...

I would leave the trigger, they are actually quite good. Just pull it apart and install a new spring set from Brownels and polish the contact areas. Reinstall it and adjust it down to 2lbs or so. It will be a very good trigger and break clean for you for a lot less than a Jewell.

You can try some Flitz metal polish.You may need to stone the flat surfaces very lightly to get any burrs out but just take your time, it should polish out like chrome.

Post by: gramps on February 24, 2009, 07:02:39 PM: I have had a Mark V .257 W' since 1980 and it has been and is a great rifle. Twenty five years ago I didn't notice the weight as I do now..lol. I reload with H870, (which is no longer available), but I have an adequate supply. I have made cases for the .257 W from 7mm Rem Mag brass(because it is much cheaper) by just resizing the neck and reloading as usual. The neck will be slightly shorter, but I have noticed no difference.

Post by: Jamieb on February 24, 2009, 09:03:53 PM: Guys. I've adjusted 5 X-Mark triggers in the last year. All were easy to adjust to a very crisp 2#. I've only been adjusting the weight screw, I haven't needed to touch the over travel screw. I really like the X-mark triggers and think their a big improvement over the old style rem triggers.

I tried 7mm mag but the necks got thick and the bullet tension was inconsistent.

Post by: RubblesPH on February 26, 2009, 04:30:08 PM: Well, after several inquiries I got some insight on a load. 75gr Ramshot Magnum, Fed 215M primers, 100gr Barnes Tipped TSX (TTSX). Supposed to go 3600+ muzzle velocity and very accurate.

As soon as I get some brass I'll load it and then chronograph it for you 257 shooters.

I'm gonna adjust the X-Mark trigger to two pounds and give it a whirl before I spend the money for a new trigger.

257Wbymag...I'd still like some input from you or anyone else if you had something to add.

Post by: norsepeak on February 26, 2009, 06:15:26 PM: Really I think the best thing you can do with that rifle is give it to me! :chuckle: I've been trying to work a deal on one myself, but no luck yet....sweet gun have fun with it, but I might think about a little heavier pill for it. I shoot the 120 grns out of my 25-06 with good results.
