Title: Goose Prairie Bull Elk Hunt
Post by: Gentrys on June 15, 2017, 08:06:39 AM
Well, it's taken 12 years, but finally saw something other than "Not Selected" on my hunt application results.  Headed to Goose Prairie for the firearm any bull elk hunt starting Oct 23rd.  Was drawn in there back in 2003 and had a great hunt.  If anyone got drawn in that area and wants to get out and do some scouting, let me know.  I plan on spending a lot of time hiking up there this summer.

Count 2 more Hunt Wa guys in. ScottA and myself.
Washingtonmuley that is a great speed goat pic in your avatar. I am on pins and needles for getting drawn in Wyoming this year for a chance at one.

Would appreciate any beta I could get from folks that my know the area better though.

Fun hunt, look steep nasty bottoms after general hits if you havent notched the tag, plenty of bulls, a 320-330 bull is very respectable out of there.  A little jealous, 14 points and ill be playing again next year.  If hunting the wilderness scouting may not pay off since animals will be migrating slightly, if hunting from road if a road is high hunt low, if road is low hunt high.  Bring packboards!

Just curious but why would you hang cameras now for the rifle hunt?  Do you expect them to be in the same areas or are you just looking to inventory them?

The only problem with setting cameras now is come rifle season odds are those bulls wont even be close to there summer range.
Wants pressure hits think steep and deep for your bigger bulls. JMO

Luckily that tag encompasses a huge area, so he'll have options. It would be crappy to have the area you've scouted pulled out from under you though.

Any idea how much they are thinking of expanding the closure?  Is this because of the American River fire? 🔥

Plenty of land to hunt in the 356 south of bumping road unless the district ranger closes the whole district which I can picture happening.

Probably will only happen if another lightning bust happens and the Ranger closes the district  to the public.

Going to be crowded in the areas that are open.  Unfortunate that 1502 is out as well.

please let's have learned from 2015, no campfires means none at all.  If we have even a small fire as a result of carelessness I would be surprised if they didn't close it all down.

The road is open to the marina but it's all under a level 3 evacuation.  They won't let you park along there.  The road is completely closed at the marina.

Bethel unit is unlikely to be affected by anything but smoke.

Sucks to all the Goose Prairie permit holders.  WDFW sure as hell better give you your points back.

There's still a lot of area to hunt with the Goose Prairie permit. The Bumping GMU goes south all the way to the White Pass highway.

My mistake.  I did realize the entire GMU was open to the Goose Prairie tag.  I wonder why they used such a specific name for the tag rather than just calling it "Bumping"?  Probably to confuse noobs like me...

Yeah it looks like the north part of the unit is inaccessible, so its gonna push a lot of hunters to the nile or the south side

I cant speak for the OP, But I was able to hunt ( not shooter ) with a friend who drew the quality rifle and although we left the big ones for the bull tag holders, he was stoked to get his first bull and the whole elk rut experience! It was truly unforgettable. I would love to see some pics of the brutes that were taken out of there on that tag.

Also doing a drop camp with chinook pass outfitters.  Just waiting to see what this weekend's storm does and if it brings snow before we decide on a camp location.
Think I might have done too much scouting in elevations that will possibly be deep in snow by Oct 23rd.

This storm looks like 97.5% rain. Friday and Friday night is the only time snow level is supposed to be under 5000'. Unless you are going be be camping on top of Mt. Aix or Bismark peak, I think you'll be just fine.

Going slow, we have hit it hard every day. We have seen elk but mostly either right at or before daylight or to too dark in the evening to see what they are. We hunted the wilderness and bumping lake for 3 days and have moved to a different spot now. Still going in, and coming out in the dark.

That sounds about normal. They'll be moving the  day before the storm comes in next week.

My Buddys have been pounding the roads and easy access areas.  I'm heading up to Squaw Butte to lend some eyes tomorrow evening.  They said they counted over 200 camps and 2000 hunters up there today.   :yike:    Guy that goes in way deep and steep  says he's seeing some nice bulls.

I just got back from bumping/nile units and struck out after 5 days of non-stop hiking and glassing. Didn't even see an elk. My dad drew a any bull tag, looking to get our first big game together. Any advice with this weather moving in? Running out of ideas. We aren't afraid to put some miles in and burn some boot rubber.

Were you in the woods before daylight and out after dark?  Did you get to any high points and glass at sunrise?

Today I was headed for above tree level and the wind cut the trip short.  I glassed with the spotting scope until 9 30 coming up with 3 branched bulls and 30 cows/calfs. Mid day, I burned some leather and walked in thick timber turning up 2 more bulls and 15 cows and calfs. Find fresh tracks and scat and you'll know that there's elk there. :twocents:

Elk will be up and about in the thick stuff where they know they're safe.
