FYI the grade creek road is blocked by some massive rocks just past Grade Creek if anyone is trying to get to south navarre campground on via that road.

I was up there during memorial day hanging cameras. Able to get past it on motorcycles very easily, and hoping that Cooper Mtn. road will be passable once the snow melts off. But yeah those boulders are huge!

Yeah i could see a motorcycle getting by... I moved a couple rocks and got through the first section in the jeep only to turn the corner and see 2 truck size rocks on the road... :bash:

Manson is a good hunt. Hope for some weather to push the bucks down but not enough weather to make the roads icy and horrible to be on. It's a long way to the bottom of those canyons.

winterkill year...estimated 25% of the mature deer didn't make it through the winter...but that also means 75% did survive so there will be some mature bucks.

Manson unit this year will be hard to fill unless you hold a early doe tag or a late any buck tag. so far i have only seen two legal bucks and both of them almost in town. the does have started dropping fawns but not very many twins. even the st. Andrews unit will be tuff. seeing few deer and have not seen one legal buck up there. i did see white tails in areas i have only seen mule deer, kinda odd. turkeys are showing up in alot more places now. mostly on privet land though. winter kill was high this year and fawn counts not so good. if your going to hunt Manson better plan alot of scouting. i have 3 trail cameras up and no pics of deer. did get some pics of turkeys. PS. if you plan on going out and scouting either carry a pistol or a pole. rattle snakes this year are very thick. grade creek road had 9 dead and saw three alive.

Well, I got on a few groups of does totaling about 25-30 head. One forkey and one spike mixed in with them. A buck I had seen during scouting and was trying to find got killed opening afternoon by a very nice father and son team. Will be getting some cooler temperatures this weekend, hopefully will get some bucks moving!

i noticed the weather is supposed to take a big change this weekend. (10/20-10/22. hope it starts getting them to move. seen one two point and about 20 floppy ears. lots of camps with little hanging. talked to one group that were leaving on Tuesday and between three guys they seen 9 doe's one spike and a small two point. all of the deer that i have seen taken have been low near orchards or on privet lands. i did see on muley freek that Paul shot a brute of a buck on the south shore very low. i saw that buck last winter along the hwy.

They probably were watching the same group I was then. And yeah supposed to get snow Saturday. Gonna be windy as hell tomorrow then be snowy and calm Saturday. Ought to be good! There's a big kitty problem below the Grade Creek road too. I've had three different cougars come through with regularity (about once every ten days or so) and haven't had any deer come by that camera since they started. Funny how that happens. Wouldn't mind sticking a tag on the tom.

Yeah I've seen a lot of those critters... I have taken photos of them in Chelan county for a decade... figured either frost or parasite must degrade the tendons or muscles that control the ears. Found one doe 3 years in a row that had ears like a Scottish terrier; short and pointy. She was DEFINITELY a frostbite case.. those ears were rough! That Manson unit is pretty cool. Lots of unexpected species and unique cases to see.

Most of the floppy eared deer I've seen are mule deer, and most that I've examined in hand appear to most likely be frostbite.  Some are definitely physical trauma, similar to the split and notched ears - I suspect mostly escaped predation attempts, though barb wire and other trauma possibilities too.

I saw more in Wyoming than Washington, not surprising with the wind and systems that bring arctic cold down into the lower 48.  I've seen a few that had their ears broken off after severe frost trauma, from just stubs to half ears.  One of my favorites was with a camp of Washington hunters I checked every year in Wyoming, the patriarch of the group was very selective and either killed big bucks or ate his tag.  I rolled into their camp one day just after they'd arrived back with his wimpy 17" wide buck.  He had jumped it in heavy cover and made a split second decision to shoot when he saw it was at least 6" past his ears - but he was missing the outer half of his ears!  His group members had taken a lot of ribbing form him over the years, and they were paying it back with interest.

There's at least 10-15 trees before you get to the switchbacks. In the first three-ish miles there are about 50-60 of them, hard to find the trail sometimes. Heavy erosion on the trail as well from snow melt, motorcycle passage is impossible. I laid down some boot tracks for you to follow at least!

thank you Sky for all your work and updates! My youngest and I went in to Mitchell from the bottom (looking for rattlesnakes...damn 12 year old boy!) and saw the sign saying the lower road was closed (in June) for repairs...I am assuming the rock "road block" has been cleared up. My father said they have been hauling gravel in and heard the road from Falls Creek to S. Navarre is "like a highway" now...which is good as that steep grade up Nelson Butte always concerned me if someone was hauling a horse trailer down it!

Probably not an issue if they came up to S. Navarre from the Chelan side. They put a lot of time making that like a highway for the fire. Coming in from GC or Cooper Mtn is and always will be a little rougher but prefer it like that it keeps some of the Subaru's out

Well that unit has really dropped off. I talked to several permit holders that went home empty handed or shot a small buck. My advise is that even though there is lots of road hunting that can happen get out of the vehicle and put some miles on. Don't be afraid to hunt below the road and hope for snow.

the manson unit holds some local deer. most are in low areas around orchards and wineries. the unit is big and has a fare amount of migratory deer that come out of the back country and winter at or below grade creek road. last year there was some snow up high but we did not get enough to push them till mid december. i was up grade creek road the weekend after thanksgiving and saw a few deer but nothing like it was. the rut was in but we only saw a few does and two small bucks. we didn't go up nelson butte just because we knew the snow line was in down to a spot that if you get there you wont get out. if it was me i would concentrate my efforts in the heavy timber areas. falls creek, coyote flats, top end of poison creek. i know these areas will hold deer as the migration begins. the migrating deer will come out of areas like minors basin, south navarre, uno, and summer blossom and hold up in those timber areas till the snow gets deep and the move down to the lake. prepare for rain, snow, sun, everything in between. i know of two bucks taken last year that hit 25" wide but one was a 3x3 and the other was a crabby 4x4. both were taken in timber in 7in of snow with two to three does with them. it's become a hard unit but i think the deer are starting to come back. a few years back you could drive and hike all day without seeing a deer. now i average 12 deer a day in the last two years of making the loop.

That sounds hopeful of a come back... this was one of my favorite units years ago but quit going because the deer had taken such a hit.

Well I can assure you the deer haven't made a comeback. You will have to hunt hard to find a decent buck. With that being said get off the road and hit the timber.

Couple weeks ago I saw a big batchelor herd of spikes and forkeys, at least 7 or 8 all running together. That hasn't happened in the last 3 or 4 years. The hills are still really green up there too so lots of good feed following that mild winter up there. Trending in the right direction finally I think.

During Late archery last year. Buddy only saw 4 legal  bucks during all of the late season. While I was there the biggest buck I saw was a big 2 point. Lots of tracks but saw very few deer.

Was your buddy just driving the roads or out hiking the hills away from the road?

You see any bears while you were up there?

Nah. Wasn't really looking though, was tracking a camera down that had been dead for over a year and a half :( But the deer looked fat and happy.
