I was trying to come up with some wisecrackin' way to make this post but this is serious bidness, so I just can't do it.
Since yesterday morning I've been on pins and needles feeling like I was going to puke my guts out with anxiety. I opened up my WDFW login and hit the temporary backdoor about 15 times and saw that I wasn't holding any new licenses. That was that new backdoor method that worked for a few minutes. Well I watched a bunch of folks posting on here that they had a license showing for elk or deer or whatever and started to feel like I didn't draw anything. I clicked it one last time and all of a sudden realized that I was in fact holding a new license. Read what it said, decided it couldn't be true, and went back to work with a little bit of the butterflies in my gut. Call it butterflies, call it nausea, call it what you want. A little while later I saw that the special hunts tab had showed up on the WDFW website. Well...it's now or never. I logged back in, went to special hunts and about crapped myself. Couldn't believe what I was seeing. I drew a permit. A permit I never in a million years expected to draw. Looks like I'll be going mountain goat hunting in the Goat Rocks Wilderness this fall. I still can't believe it. I can't imagine a more quintessential western backpack mountain hunting experience than a mountain goat hunt. And to be doing it in Washington, relatively close to home in an area like the Goat Rocks... I'm beyond amazed at what is coming my way this fall. I've hunted pretty much my whole life. I grew up back east in the Catskill Mountains in upstate NY. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect I'd be mountain goat hunting. I've let the cat out of the bag a little with a few friends and have received more offers to help than I can count already and for that I'll be forever grateful. I'm hoping for an amazing adventure, good times with friends and family and hopefully a nice billy to top off the memories that will be made this fall that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
Before you guys gang tackle me, I will say that I'm totally thrilled to finally draw an OIL permit but with 9 points, I feel like I drew long before I should have. I feel bad for you guys who have been applying twice as long or more than I have.

Very cool! Top 2 units to draw here, I have seen tons of goats up there while elk hunting. No matter what shape you are in get in better shape. The sky's the limit, if you can hit it hard you could come away with a real trophy goat. Pick Kent @white pass outfitters brain also, his brother lives goats. Give er hell when the time comes
-
Wow, congrats Josh!!!!

Glad to see a Hunt Wa member pull such a great tag!! Can't wait to follow along on your adventure. Big congratulations to you!!

That is gonna be a blast of a hunt !!! Definetly do that one up !! Congratulations
-
That's awesome! Super excited that people on the board can share the stories and at the same time...... you suck :)
-
congrats. I would recommend kent and his brother too at white pass outfitters. he packed me in on an elk hunt a few years ago, and I seen a lot of goats, two goat hunters next to us killed theirs and while out from camp enjoying the peacefulness a big billy was hanging out and living by our camp. if it interests you and can afford a drop camp, id once again call white pass outfitters, he will put you right were you need to be

Congrats.

Take a hike to scout a wknd before your hunt to Coyote Lake.(Lily Lake Trail, clear branch cowlitz river trail. The trail is signed to lost lake at intersection with an old shelter. As there is no maintained trail to coyote you'll have to get a topo map.The yakima cascade horsemen maintained it some years.Set up a scope on the knob between coyote and lost hat lake(north side of lake facing west tword coal ridge). You should see lots of goats. With a partner to help pack out you shouldnt require an outfitter as its only 5 miles from lily lake trailhead and all downhill.I packed out a small blacktail in 1 trip by myself. The pack only weighed 146#s.The wknd that I took that buck I had 2 big billys on a rock outcrop stand above me while I boned out my buck less than 200 yrds from me.This is above the lake on the meadow benches full of deer and elk, too.Brush can hide the brown critters but the goats stand out even with snow patches covering the creeks. For a young heathy guy a scramble up to shooting range from your spotting hide shouldnt be a problem.Think subalpine like crimpons for traction and figure 8 belay descender,100' rope for getting you and your game down the steep pitches. If you have good boots you might not need the crimpons but your knees will thank you if you have them. I stuffed the meat&head into my pack, threw the doubled line around an outcrop & descended to the next bench.I then retrieved the line and repeated it til I was back to my camp on the lake.Getting my gear back into the pack took less than an hour and 4 hours to reach the rig at the trailhead. Hope to see your goat pictures posted here.Get it mounted as most of us will never get the chance.

Bout time you post.
Made me wait 24+ hours to type Congrats  you Jackwagon

Congrats Jack!!!!! My old man and his cousins hammered the the goats in the late 60's. Great stories to come.

Nice to see one the good guys get a great tag. Congrats.
-
Congrats, I had that tag in 2000 and it is an incredible hunt. I would be happy to share what I know from the 100+ miles of boot leather I burned up there scouting and hunting.
-
OMIGOD Josh, that is awesome. (BTW I have put that table saw to good use, thanks.) I'm retired now, if you need any help, let me know. I'm a good pack mule.

Josh, I think I'd pm this guy and talk with him!
-
Ya jeez wow. I already can't thank you guys enough. This is going to be DIY. No guides. Nothing against guides, it's just not in my budget at this point. I talked to White Pass Outfitters already. Been bouncing some ideas off of him. Good dude. Some of you will be getting pm's and phone calls. I can't thank you enough.
-
Congrats! Hope we can count on you posting scouting and hunt updates.
-
Oh man that's a hunt I wish I could tag along with. Thank God for the internet! Congrats!
-
Awesome pull Josh, couldn't have happened to a better dude!! Living vicariously through you on this hunt.

I've been blessed with good luck in the draws. Drew my quality buck permit in the Blues with 4 points in 2010 and killed a nice buck. Got a foothills west whitetail permit in 2013 with 7 points I think and blew it on a nice buck. Now I got this with 9 points.

Don't ever apologize for playing the game and winning josh. This is great news. Gives us a chance to live an experience that we might not ever get to personally have. This is just great any way we all look at it. Glad it happened to you. I know you will be kind enough to drag us through this whole experience with you. Best of luck to you. -Jed

Great response, and I agree. Josh deserves this tag because he's done as much and more in this state for conservation than most of us have. His hunting ethics will shine throughout this hunt. He'll scout, he'll ask, and he'll beg info.
In the end we'll have a great hunt to relive through his posts. That's all we can ask of a man.

Alright, I already said congratulations, but I have to say, the title of this thread is wrong- nobody is ever "due" to draw a mountain goat hunt. Doesn't matter if you've been applying for 50 years. That person is no more deserving of a tag than a person applying for the first time. So enjoy your hunt and don't ever feel that someone else was more entitled to the tag than you were.
-
Awesome man !! Be waiting to hear stories about that hunt !
-
Congrats a goat tag is a great hunt!!!.Took a really nice billy out of smith creek unit in 97. My advise is to hunt as much as you can early in your season when there are blue sky days since scoping is a big part of the equation hunting goats. Once the weather changes and socks in, your ability to spot and stalk is drastically reduced. The older the billy the more yellow tinged they will be, that's what your looking. Good luck on your hunt!
-
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

Awesome! Congratulations!

So you have your first scouting trip planned yet?
Probably going to be at least mid July before goat country is accessible from what I've gathered.
-
Congrats my friend! 8)

Congrats

Awesome Josh, Congrats! Regarding access, yes, it might be a couple more weeks. I was down lower in RR area about 1.5 weeks ago and still patches of snow in shady areas down pretty low. High country still looked pretty socked in.

Congrats.
I would recommend studying up on the difference between a big goat and a typical goat.
Billy's have some trade marks that separate them from nannies.
All Billys can look similar.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers.

When is the last time you checked results to make sure it hasn't changed?
-
You shouldn't feel so bad about drawing with low points. Last year my husband drew 1 of 2 quality elk tags in the Teanaway with only 2 points. Don't know how or why that happened but it happened. For a second there I did feel bad for the guys that have been putting in for years, just for a second though. You just have to embrace what you have been gifted. Pour your heart and soul into it the best you know how. Enjoy every tiny moment, from the time you found out you drew to the time you drive back from your trip with a big ol' billy in the back of your rig. Most importantly, keep us entertained with your epic hunt on here, we can't wait either
-
Congratulations Josh!!!!! If it couldn't be me with my 20 points I'm glad it was you with your 9 :chuckle:
Deerthug on here had that tag a few years ago and may be able to provide you some insight also.
Good luck buddy and keep me posted!
-
Congratulations!!!!! Good luck. I just found out today that I drew a goat tag. Looked when the results first came out as soon as everything came out and must of missed it. Opened my mail today from fish and game figuring it was for my cow permit I drew. And the read I drew a goat permit. Did not know until today. I was like how did I misss the selected on my goat app. 17 points but finally got lucky.
-
That's one helluva surprise.

Awesome! I called last year to get mine and the person in Olympia was very good to work with had my tag in hand within a few days and saved a road trip to the capital!
-
So if you don't purchase the tag they will offer it to another applicant? Has anyone heard of that happening?
-
The interesting part about the whole ...pay by July 31st... thing is, I emailed them a week ago or so asking what I needed to do and they told me once I got that notification in the mail, I had 10 days to pay for the tag. Now I have that letter and it says July 31. It doesn't matter to me in my case, it'll be paid for this week, but I'm not sure if one hand knows what the other is doing down there.
I've not heard of any other applicants get offered an unclaimed tag, ever.
-
All those that drew, good luck and hope everything goes well. Here I sit with 2 handfuls of points, could have bought a new rifle by now.

Yeah it was super easy to buy over the phone. The only suggestion I made to them and the biologist is, it would be nice if they had a nicer tag rather than just a cheesy print out like a Deer, Elk, Bear, or cougar tag. I think it would awesome if they were old style printed on a separate paper that looked official and meant more than just any other tag. This will be an awesome experience enjoy!

Tagging along. Good luck!

Feeling encouraged? Looks like a good trip.

should be a pretty short hunt. man I miss that country

I can't tell from the pics, but is that a big herd of goats?

Awesome country!

That's my sister in law's bent pole. She bent it on the AT last month and hasn't contacted them yet. My Eastons are still straight LOL.
I can't tell from the pics, but is that a big herd of goats?
Yeah, there's about 40-ish nannies and kids just below the rock face straight up from my left foot.
-
That is so damn cool!!
-
awesome country! good for you on the tag mountain goat is the last animail on my bucket list I have not been able to get.
-
Thank you. I've got a ways to go to catch up I guess!!
I've got a couple more weekends of family stuff to handle then I'll be back out looking again. Hard to believe I can be mountain goat hunting in a month. I do plan to wait a while for them to hair up and will probably hunt in early October.

Looks like fun.
It goes without saying but dat dare country will be a little cooler in October.
Be prepared.

Something I've put a lot of time into thinking about. I think I'm good from a gear standpoint. I do worry a little about early season snow, but maybe I'm overthinking it.

What are you thinking for a mount if you get a nice goat with good hair? Are you going to do a shoulder or a half or full body mount?

Something I've put a lot of time into thinking about. I think I'm good from a gear standpoint. I do worry a little about early season snow, but maybe I'm overthinking it.
Except for access, I would take snow over rain in that country, but you are wise to wait IMHO.
-
What are you thinking for a mount if you get a nice goat with good hair? Are you going to do a shoulder or a half or full body mount?
Well....that's a tough one at this point. Shoulder pedestal is what I'm thinking, but we're gearing up for a new house, so the goat may end up euro'd for now with the cape taxidermy tanned. Once we get the new place, then decide on the mount so I know which way I want it facing, form, etc. Hopefully that makes sense.
-
Is it that much more to get the whole hide tanned as opposed to just the cape? You can make a spot for a full.body mountain goat a criteria for the new place lol.
-
I am having a half mount done with mine, when talking with the taxidermist a full mount is like adding a love seat to your living area, half mount I will be able to hang on the wall and take up less floor space.

you should be fine on that end, cold glassing sessions would be more my worry

It's getting so close! Thanks for all the pictures Jackelope. Good to know these goat tags really exist

They might not exist. Wdfw could have just given him one knowing he would post about it on here and this get us all re energized about goat hunting and continue pouring our dollars into the draw.....
-
Beautiful country! What a great draw, I'm jealous!
-
Thanks for the pictures and update. That country is amazing. Cheering you on in this hunt!
-
Go get him Josh. Can't wait to see the results. Congrats on that tag.

:twocents:
I've looked at a few full body mounts. They're really big. I mean...enormous. I don't have near the room for that.
-
Good luck Jackelope!
As far as mounts go for me I think a goat rug is about as cool as they come! Also the most flexible as far as displaying, but there are lots of options, just thought id throw that into the mix as its not as popular as a half or full mount.
-
Actually thought real hard about a rug. If I kill a goat and the conditions are right, I might skin him out for a rug. We'll see where he's at and what kind of hair he's got when I put my hands on him and go from there.
It's a consideration for sure.
Thanks for all the kind words and good wishes. I can't believe it's so close to happening.
-
Friend here in Sitka has a mountain goat rug. Really cool, can be moved easily, put away easily or displayed in several ways.
Good luck Josh, look forward to following your hunt.

Prepping for snow?
It's white up there right now.
I know you hate floorless, but a floorless with a stove might save your comfort up there.
If you need/want, you can borrow my megatarp with titanium stove...

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to use my own stuff. I'm good with a little less comfort. I have the floorless option as well but no stove. It's in the works though.
Looks like some warm weather coming in after this snap. Only a couple inches of snow predicted then upper 30's at night and mid to upper 50's during the day early next week. I got a picture of the snow in the rocks.. it's pretty amazingly beautiful. It's not my photo to share otherwise I'd post it up.
-
Roger that.
But if you get in a pinch, let me know, you're more than welcome, even just the stove.
It is looking amazing up there. Got a few pictures just before the front moved in with clear blue sky.
Good luck!

A little motivational talk from the past as a refresher for you. "Never give up"
As I said a few times, congrats to your daughter and to you too, Rick. Just wanted to share this exchange I had with Rick's daughter texting me on her dad's phone while he was driving to the cabin Friday night. There was a lot of joking around about her needing a pet rabbit and stuff, but then she got down to business. I thought you folks would like this exchange. I'm the green messages and she's the gray ones.

Just came back from an amazing First hunting weekend in the goat rocks. Intended to stay another day but Mother Nature had other ideas. Hiked in Friday night a few miles in the dark and set up camp with fillthefreezer. Got up Saturday morning to socked in views of nothing and rain/snow. With no visibility we sat tight till about noon. Decided to take a walk and fill out water bladders at least. Ended up running into s couple hikers who said they saw some goats a couple miles up the trail so we decided to go for it and see if we could turn them up. We eventually found them but no big billy in the group. It was cool to see them and I was relieved to discover they’re not completely invisible in a snow covered environment. Had them at 150 yards but the little billy was just too young so we let him walk. Headed back to camp in a white out with I don’t know how hard the wind was blowing but it was pretty dang hard. Our quick walk to fill up our water supply ended up 7.5 miles RT. Made it back to camp only to find my tent crushed under a crap ton of wet snow. Here’s a few pics.

We turned in for the night only to have to clear snow buildup from the tent 4-5 times during the night. Woke up this morning and found zero visibility and it wouldn’t stop snowing. Gave it a few hours and with no improvement we packed it in a day early and made for the Blue Spruce and a welcome bacon cheeseburger and a couple IPA’s.

I don't believe all of this, it was cold stuff, sounds like a nice crackling fire in the background of your videos..... :chuckle: :chuckle:
We were down a lot lower and it was 35 degrees plus a strong wind on the west side of the ridges, so I'm sure it was worse up there. Good luck

Nothing like a good plop of that wet snow down the back of your neck to wake you up. Brrrrr. Good stuff.

Jack,
You might want to consider calling Kent.
He might be able to get you in position for a couple of days.
He might have accommodations up there he and you could use between muzzy and riffle.
He knows where a Billy is.
Just a thought.
No regrets.
-
I don't know why he's worried. :dunno: hes a billionaire mod, he could just take his chopper to the top and get dropped off and flown out after he's had his team of "moss back guides" cut and pack out his billy. :chuckle:

Understandable. As mentioned, this system looks like a squall, then solid weather for a bit.
It will all pan out.

I'm feeling really good about the next 4 days. I'll be up where the goats live when the weather breaks. Hoping it all comes together this weekend. Mother Nature has really put the screws to the Goat Rocks tagholders this year. Feeling like this will be a good weekend for us.

Well sorry to say that I’m still holding a goat tag. Queez, one of the other tag holders and I spent the weekend up there. It’s sketchy. Probably close to 3’ of snow and super difficult getting around. Spent a bunch of time today trying to will a nice billy off the top of the ridge by camp but no dice. I’m grateful to have been able to spend some time in some very Beautiful country. A goat at this point would be icing on the cake. Enjoy some pics. Sorry that there is not a pic of a dead billy.

Here’s the goats. Nanny down low in the blue circle. We had a hard time deciding if she was in fact a nanny until we watched her squat to pee. She was biiiggggg. The billy stayed up on the ridge top just below that rock face the whole time.

All you have to do is shoot and your super-ultra-high-paid guides can figure out how to get your goat down. :chuckle:

Can’t thank you all enough. Told my buddy today I’m ok if I kill a goat and ok if I don’t. I’ve seen places and done things I never would have seen or done had I not had this tag. Can’t control Mother Nature. With that said, my plan is to kill a goat in a week.

You made the right call not going out there this weekend. I have a feeling that there are some thru hikers having a terrible time tonight/this weekend.
-
Im glad you weren't up there last night. That was quite a storm.
-
Thanks for the reassurance in my decision, guys. Ive been thinking those thru hikers are pretty much all through there now. There was a bunch of north-bounders passing through in August.

Here goes nothing.
Friday Rainier10 and I got a late start but hit the trail in the dark with a plan. We were hiking in about 3.5-4 miles to the camp I’ve used every trip in so far. There’s a big view of the basin Queez and I saw plenty of goats in 2 weeks before but couldn’t get to them because of the snow. I was still freaking out a little about the snow because there was some in the parking lot at the TH. We got in to camp, got set up and went to sleep. My air mattress had a leak and we set up on an uneven spot so let’s just say I didn’t sleep well Friday night. The plan was to glass from camp before we went anywhere so we got to sleep in a little. We were going to find a goat, go kill it, pick him out, get a room in packwood for the night and then hike back up Sunday morning and get our camp out. We were going to make the Blue Spruce in time for a bacon cheeseburger and a couple beers and the Seahawks game Sunday. That was the plan and we were sticking to it.
I found a goat right away and then Rick and I found another.
We decided to head up to the head of the basin and have a look over the saddle on the other side. We get up there about 1/2-3/4 mile and hemmed and hawed and eventually decide to go directly after the first goat we saw. We were pretty sure that he was a billy but not positive as it was really far across that basin. Maybe 1500 yards or so. So I’m not the brave adventurous type but decided it’s all or nothing. I really wanted to kill my goat in the wilderness and I thought this weekend might be my last chance to do it so we went for it. Into a seriously uncomfortable side hill adventure to the goat. Picked out a landmark to get to where we thought we’d be able to at least better evaluate the situation and maybe see the goat. To say I was nervous on this hill would be an understatement. Mostly it wasn’t bad but there was a few spots that really probably weren’t bad but still made me freak a little. Anyway we get to the ridge above the goat and I took the rifle off my pack just in case something happened quick. We peaked over the edge and couldn’t see a goat. So Rick is a super patient guy. We sat there for at least 6-7 minutes picking the brush apart trying to make a snow patch turn into a goat. No dice. Rick decides he’s going to cross the slide and see if he can bump him towards me. We didn’t even know if he was still there as it’s now roughly 4.5 hours after we spotted him from camp. 20 or so minutes goes by and I’m getting disgruntled as I felt like we just wasted a day getting to this goat that is no longer here so I started looking for the other goat. He was smaller but I felt he was a billy too. Anyway I spin around on the top of the ridge with my spotting scope and All and looked for a couple minutes. Nothing. Turn around back to look at the original spot and all of a sudden this white blob comes strolling down the hill. I instantly throw the rifle up and put the scope on him. First thing that pops into my head when I saw him at 6x on the scope was that he was a pretty nice billy. I put the binoculars on him and agree with myself that it’s a billy. I put the rifle back up and cocked the hammer. Get settled in and about ready to shoot and a voice from God(Rick) calls out. Nanny! Nanny! Nanny! I was like huh?? No way. I looked up to see Rick standing up on the skyline up the ridge a ways. We’re hollering back and forth about how he saw her pee and the pee came out the back and she pee’d like a nanny. Wow. Ok. If you say so. So Rick came back across the slide and all this time the goat decides to bed down at almost exactly 100 yards.
Rick tells me he first saw him at 40 yards when he stood up, acknowledged Rick and then laid back down. Rick got to 17 yards from him before he moved at all. These are some of my favorite photos that he took.
We stared at this goat forever. Spotter, bino’s, back and forth how I was sure it was a billy. Then I remembered the pictures I had saved on my phone.
Rick realizes that he pee’d like the one on the left. Well that’s that. I’m gonna shoot this goat. I said that out loud apparently 6 or so times while we were trying to decide. But eventually went with my gut. Told Rick to get behind me because of the muzzle blast. The brake is loud if you’re off to the side. Got the rifle set up on the tripod and settled in, made sure Rick was ready and shot. Hit him with one well placed 180 grain accubond and he was dead. Never got up. I was extremely thankful for a clean, very fast kill. I was thankful he didn’t go tumbling down the mountain. I was thankful for my buddy being there. I was thankful for a lot of things.
Emotions were at an all time high at this point. I finally killed my goat. This is a weird point. I was positive in my head that he was a billy but I’m not a “goat guy” so I needed to get over there and make sure. This is me praying to God that he had nuts.
Got up to him and lifted a leg to verify and there they were. Oh man... this has been a big day!! That’s when the work started. We took a bunch of pictures and got to caping.

We ended up having to tie him off to a rock because he kept sliding down the chute we were in.
Got him all caped out, boned the meat, got him all packed up for the ride out and hit it.
That First chute was rough to get across. The rest of it felt like I was walking on air. From a hunting standpoint I’m not sure I can accurately relay that feeling. I had the cape and head, rifle, spotter etc and Rick packed the meat out. I’m sure we were both around 70 pounds total but I didn’t feel it.
Got to camp and we were both pretty gassed. We each ate a mountain house and grabbed a few things from the tent and headed out. We hiked out in a little over 2 hours and ended up hitting the packwood lodge a little after 10pm. Got a good nights sleep and grabbed some breakfast then hit the trail again. Took us about 2 hours to get to camp, broke it down and headed out. Got out in just under 2 hours and we were at the Spruce about 3pm ordering some bacon cheeseburgers and an IPA. Oh man. We had a plan and we stuck to it. Oh and we didn’t die sliding down a cliff.
Here’s a few more random pics from along the way. I tried to duplicate a few of the snow shots I took 2 weeks ago for the sake of comparison. Amazing what a couple weeks of warm weather and some huge rain can do.

So I haven’t really scored him and I really don’t care what he scores but he’s about 9”x9” and I think he’ll score around 46”. I believe he’s 4.5 years old. I was hoping for an older goat but he met my 9” billy goal. Mountain goats are huge animals.
This may seem a little corny but I felt it was fitting as we were hitting the final stretch of trail to camp with my goat that the sun was setting on my last night in the Goat Rocks. This place is truly amazing. One of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. I’ll miss it. Thank you All for the encouragement, kind words, information, I could go on and on. Just finding it hard to put it all into words. Sorry for the long winded story.

Man I already realized I forgot some of the story. Right in camp 20 minutes into the day I was walking along this hill carrying my spotter. I slipped and fell in my camp shoes. I was fine but my spotting scope came apart in the middle. I almost puked. Figured out how to screw it back together and it was good to go. Wish I took a picture. These things only add to the story I guess.

Seriously Josh thanks for letting us all be a part of your hunt. It's been a source of excitement from the moment I saw this thread pop up after special permits were drawn.
Now I know who to call if I get drawn for the Rocks tag anytime soon :chuckle:

Wow Josh, what a beautiful animal and an amazing adventure. Congratulations, you made the once in a lifetime tag into memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy it my friend!

Awesome stuff!
I was looking at that pic and I was thinking billy. But, this is coming from the guy who's only goat he killed ended up being a nanny. Fantastic and congrats!

I’m thinking about a write up on just that topic alone. I told my wife last night that mountain goat hunting is definitely not for everyone. At least not in the more remote places like the goat rocks. I’ve done a fair amount of hiking and spent a bunch of time overnight in the mountains but the “getting to the goat” is a whole different variable. I think my ability to do this was borderline at best. I could have been in better shape for sure but there’s a lot more than just that to contend with.

EPIC HUNT
-
Well done been fun following this hunt
-
Great write up and you nailed all the highpoints.
I was pretty excited when Josh asked if I wanted to go on this hunt but had no idea how awesome it would be. I am not sure I can put it into words just how amazing it was.
He is right, we had a plan and stuck to it. I think I was so laser focused on the plan and I don't think it really sank in at the time what had happened. I still can't believe it.
Picking our way across the hillside through the cliffs to get to the spot we had seen from so far away was no easy task. My heart sunk when we couldn't see the goat and Josh is right I have no patience for sitting and waiting. I am more of a "make it happen" guy. So off I went to try to bump the goat. He stood up at 40 yards looked me over for about 5 minutes and then just laid back down. At that point I turned to go tell Josh that I found him but had second thoughts about walking away from the goat. I decided I better keep eyes on him until I knew he was out where Josh could see him. I just needed to make sure I stayed out of harms way and the path of any shot that Josh might take if he saw the goat.
At 17 yards the goat stood up and moved out to where I could see his whole body, Josh posted the pics already. He stood there and peed and there was a bit of mist out his back side and I thought that maybe it was a nanny. I'm not a goat guy and have never seen a goat pee. Anyways at that point I thought, "man I should be taking some photos". So I snapped a couple of photos and great video of him actually bowing his head to show me the horns. Kind of a "if you come any closer you are going to make the evening news" kind of thing. He slowly walked away and I figured Josh must be able to see him so I hiked back up to where I could see Josh.
That's when the long talk about peeing went down and lots of discussion about billy's and nanny's. I think we talked for like 20 minutes while this goat just laid there at 100 yards. Josh was dead set against shooting a nanny and I was really thinking that we going to walk away from this goat. After he showed me the diagram of the billy standing to pee and the nanny squatting I said I am 100% sure that he stood just like the billy diagram. With that confirmed Josh decided to shoot.
He made a great shot. I mean an amazing shot, I have never witnessed anything like it, the goat just flexed and it's head tilted to the side, dead goat.
There are so many things that I take away from this hunt but here are a couple of the biggest ones in mind.
Josh never gave up, he went way outside of his comfort zone to make this happen. That hillside and cliffs were no joke but you have to shoot them where they are at and that's what he did.
Josh was steadfast that he was not going to shoot a nanny. From a conservation standpoint this was an absolute deal breaker for him, billy or eat the tag.
I think both of these say a ton about who he is and what he stands for.
I will never forget this hunt and don't think I can ever put into words how much I appreciate being allowed to participate.
Congratulations Josh on a great goat.

Thanks man.

Well now I have. I'm kind of a "goat guy" now.
-
This is so awesome. Congrats Josh. I can only imagine the emotions you went through on the side of that hill. Unbelievable.
-
A little more info on what type of guy Josh is. I had never been back country hunting. He provided everything except my clothes and sleeping bag. He brought me trekking poles, a sleeping pad, a sitting pad, the tent, the stove and the water filter. He even gave me his "puffy" jacket to use as a pillow.
That first night Josh spent on the ground as his sleeping pad didn't hold air. I think if the tables were turned I might have taken my pad back.

Oh and the bacon cheeseburger and steak fries at the Blue Spruce in Packwood were awesome. I may have just been exhausted and famished but it sure hit the spot.
@Naches Sportsman met us there for a bite to eat as well. Nice to meet up with another member and shoot the breeze.

Thanks for taking us along on an adventure that most of us could only dream about!

Nicely done CONGRATS!!!!

Gaiters too, I forgot he gave me gaiters. I was a complete rookie for this kind of thing. Just dumb enough to think we could traverse that mountain and get to that goat.
I was so motivated to get to that goat we did whatever it took.
Now on the pack out the roles were totally reversed. I was beat for the hike out and going crazy slow, having to stop every 25-30 minutes to give my shoulders a break. I was not impressed with the tenzing pack that I borrowed from a buddy. I should have taken my Bullpac in, it really handles the weight well. The tenzing pack did great with weight up to 45 pounds but at 70 it really was tearing me up.
Josh was super patient and stopped plenty of times with me so I could give my shoulders a break. He even offered to switch packs. I am sure it was tough to go out that slow, he was really looking forward to getting a good nights sleep after the previous night with no sleeping pad and was a little bit anxious to get a couple of texts out with the good news.
I think he could have run all the way to the trail head if he didn't have to wait for me. He was on cloud nine.

Atta boy Josh!! So pumped for you!

Just finished up with the biologists at the WDFW office in La Conner. Once you kill a goat you have 10 days to have it checked by a WDFW biologist. They take measurements in centimeters, age, dna sample and location of the kill. I had gps coordinates so that was a bonus.

Congratulations on your goat!!! I am so glad to see that the weather gave you the chance to get a Billy. I know it is hard work just to get up into the goats and even more difficult to get into range.
-
Here is a zoomed in photo of where the goat was looking from camp. Similar to Josh’s first photo in post 381. I will admit I t appeared to be in a almost impossible spot but we had to try. I’m so glad that we tried, it was totally worth it. When we started the trek Josh said welcome to team “bad idea”. It did kind of feel like a “hold my beer and watch this” kind of thing but it worked.
Goat is white dot on the right side of the grey slide/chute.

Am I missing it?

Man I wish you could have been there. Josh can verify how many times I said that. I know it was more times than he said he was gonna shoot that goat and he said that at least six times. You put in all the hard work and I got the bluebird skies. Really wish it would have worked out that you were there instead of me. I was thrilled to be there but felt guilty after all the hardship you endured with weather.

One other note from the hunt, I had to wear sunscreen and had way to many clothes. I swear it was 65 degrees the day he shot the goat. I think we were at 6,000 feet or something like that. Not the weather I was expecting for October 28th. Not complaining just sayin'.

Sorry about the shaky video, like I told Josh I am actually made to be in front of the camera not behind it. 8) :chuckle:
That goat was there for quite awhile before I thought about getting some video. When he bowed his head to show me his horns I got a little nervous and did think I might end up being a news story on King 5. Lucky for me he decided to just move on. After Josh put the hammer to him we found out just how sharp those pointed horns are. It is amazing how pointed they are.
Apparently I was taking so long trying to push the goat to Josh that he had turned around and was looking elsewhere for goats when this guy did walk away from me and out to where Josh should have been watching for him. I think we both might have the attention span of a goldfish. :chuckle:

One of the all time great HuntWa threads. Congratulations Josh. He is a beauty.

After following this thread and then getting to be part of the hunt I can say without a doubt that video chronicles the whole thing marvelously. The highs of getting drawn, the excitement of the scouting, the lows of the fog and snow taking you out of the game to the sun coming up and a successful end to one of the most amazing hunts I have ever been on. Truly a Once In a Lifetime event and that video brings it all together.
So glad that it worked out for you and really appreciate you being so open and sharing it with us all.

Now that you've had a few days anything you'd do different looking back on it? Other than being able to control the weather seems like a dream way for it all to play out.

I don't know what I could have done differently. I would have scouted more. Specifically I would have scouted the Rimrock GMU so I had a backup plan for bad weather. Bad weather happened and I didn't have a clue what to do.
I learned a lot about goat hunting, gear, backpacking, navigation, you name it.
If I was going to share 2 things from all of this....
1--I can't remember for sure why I chose the Goat Rocks but I think it was because there are 5 tags issued there and it seems like simple logic that that might make for better odds of drawing. I really wanted to shoot a goat with longer hair, which obviously means you have to wait till later in the season to do it. This is not something I thought about when I was applying. I don't think it's as important with the other OIL's as it is with goats, but access is a major concern. My good friend Drew told me about 150 times that the real trophy with a goat is the hair....wait for the hair...wait for the hair...so I did. If you want to shoot a goat with hair, you need to apply for and/or draw a unit that you can access. No messing around. All the goats in the Goat Rocks are at least a few miles from the road so make sure you can hike and either have the gear to spend the night out there or be prepared to buy it all. I can't really see day hiking from the car as a viable option. A lot of the access, trailheads, etc are up a road that is not well maintained and not at all maintained when it snows. And it's not at sea level. So be aware of that.
The other thing I would stress is nanny/billy identification. If you're not a "goat guy"(I'm not), be prepared to scour over hundreds of pictures practicing ID'ing them. From a conservation standpoint, I would have eaten my tag before I killed a nanny. I understand accidents happen, and I was prepared for that myself, but I still sat 99.7 yards from a goat I was pretty much positive was a billy for 45 minutes before I shot him. I had to convince myself I was right. (I second guess myself a lot...) Bushcraft posted this video on here a month or so ago. It's the best video I've seen for this purpose.

The state also sends you a bunch of material on ID also. The state of Alaska requires you take an ID test. WA sends you some of their info. Don't take it lightly. One thing I learned was that it's pretty easy to ID a billy when it's a billy. When it's a big nanny, things get more difficult. If you happen to be on FAcebook, the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance puts up a guess the sex billy/nanny pic. These were extremely helpful too. Also join the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance. It's an org that is working hard with goat conservation. They do projects here in Washington too, with the end goal being more opportunity for us to draw tags in the future. Well....for you guys to draw tags in the future. I guess I'm done with that game.

Very cool video and write up! Thanks for taking us along with you....
The lows make the highs higher and I'm glad you overcame the adversity that came your way. To push through....it is often the difference maker.
Two things I'll throw out there.
1. In the video, (don't get me wrong it's fantastic!) But I'd change the music a little so it's not on repeat.
2. Why when I see pics of you do I think you resemble Bearpaw? You got that same look in your eye :) :dunno:

Josh,
Thanks for taking us along for the ride. It adds an element to document your journey on here and so many people pulling for you, but the pressure of an OIL has to wear on a guy when you face the conditions you did. Happy it worked out in the end for you.
Sorry if you've already touched on it, but I'm curious on your shot. What gun, what bullet placement. These animals are tough, and that pic of you standing below your goat, you can see that a quiver from that thing would have sent it down a rocky roller coaster.
Thanks,
Cody
-
I will let Josh answer this as well and he has all the details on the gun and the bullet.
I can tell you watching the shot was amazing. He was rock solid and absolutely drilled the goat. I really should have videotaped that and am disappointed that I didn't.
He hit that goat right in the boiler and it barely budged. It tensed up, it's left leg moved a little forward and it's head rolled to the left as it stretched out. My guess is it took all of 8 or 9 seconds. I was waiting for a death kick or something and then the tumble down the cliff butt nothing. That bullet basically turned that goat to stone right there in its bed. He couldn't have laid down and presented a better shot if you staged it yourself.
I have never seen anything like it in real life and only a couple of times on TV shows. It was amazing.
Josh was cool as a the other side of the pillow for the shot and a total wreck after. You could feel the emotion in the air.
-
Great pics, great Goat. Congrats

I took my TC Encore in .300 Win Mag. It's a nice, light compact rifle that I really really enjoy shooting. I did a lot of shooting with 180 grain accubonds and the 185 grain Bergers. I shoot factory ammo. Both shot great but I decided to go with the Accubond only because I wasn't going to be shooting long range. So the shot was ranged at 99.7 yards. Rick pretty much described the rest of it. I was amazed that he didn't move. Bullet took out both front shoulders. We did the gutless method breaking him down so I didn't look at the innards, but I assume by the location of the shot, it took out his lungs too. A little high for the heart. I mentioned 17 or 18 probably times to Rick how I was concerned he would tumble. He could have gone a long way down I think if he did.

That's sweet. Thank God he bedded at the proper angle, just the gravity of him dropping in his tracks would have likely been enough for gravity to take over. Awesome stuff. Great pics and videos. Thanks again for sharing.

That gutless method is the way to go, so much cleaner. I barely had any blood on my hands.
Speaking of the blood on my hands, with deer I get all itchy but didn't have that same issue with goat blood. :dunno:
I will say I was shocked by the amount of meat on a goat. The backstrap was almost as long as an elk but it was smaller diameter than a deer. I guess maybe in volume the backstrap was the same as a deer. I was also surprised that there was really no fat at all like you find on a deer going into winter.

Congrats again Josh, epic journey! And your insite will surly help future goat hunters, including myself. You brought up very important points and that video on Identifying Billy’s was great. Let next years draw begin!!!! You did it right and gave the respect to the hunt that it deserves!
Thanks buddy. I learned a lot from other folks in this adventure. If I can help someone next year, then I’ve done my part. These hunts are a huge deal from a conservation standpoint and that aspect shouldn’t be taken lightly as Bushcraft mentioned in that other thread.

I like to use these threads as a means of journaling my hunts and experiences year to year. Sorry to keep adding to it but figured I’d add a few more pics relative to the hunt. Itll be a while before my mount is done so I had Bugs n Bones do a euro for now. Sorry if the pics are annoying.
Hope you enjoy them though!!

How bout an update on the meat prep and recipes you've tried so far. How does it eat??

Well... I hate to say I haven't eaten any of it yet, but I haven't. I did slice a few chunks off when I was butchering and threw them in a fry pan with some salt and pepper. Wanted to see how it tasted. Tasted good...more gamey tasting than deer normally tastes and tougher, but it wasn't backstrap. I ground everything up except for the backstraps. I plan to cook some of those up soon.

Josh are you going to milk this one until your next OIL permit? :chuckle:
