If you ever wonder where your cameras go well I kinda think this guy carrying bolt cutters in the woods explains it. So my camera was taken and this guy walked by two of my cameras watching the bait camera that was taken! I didn't see him take it so if he would like to explain why he walked by my cameras and my camera disappeared about the same time cut off the tree! No I wont give out my area or location except the guy was on the westside and that is it. If you know him please pm me I would like to know who it is and would like everyone to know this camera was working so the guy must have thought he could come and get the camera but the funny thing is that was a camera that I didn't like anyways! but at least I have a suspect for my other missing cameras from the last few years!
-
Man I hope you catch the guy that took the camera.
-
What a piece of work. Hopefully you can track him down.

Right on !! Not for the camera being stolen BUT for having the balls to put his pic up on the forum for everyone to see !!! Eventually someone who knows him will see this and he will forever be known as a dirt bag thief :bash:
-
I really just like to show all the hunting community the a holes that steal *censored* while in the woods! I use to write on my cameras my email for pictures but people would rather steal the camera instead! Way to ruin it! to bad you lose this time!
-
Good luck!

I stopped by the pawn shop this week and was surprised to see 8 different trail cameras in it. I should have taken pictures of them. Probably all hot.

Thanks for posting the pictures of this scum bag. Was this photo taken during the hunting season. Not a lot of people wear full camo out of season. looks like he needs a knot on his head.
-
Sorry for your luck. I absolutely despise thiefs. Leaves a sick feeling in your stomach. I haven't put any cameras up this yr due to the fact I don't want to put my time and money into setting them just to return and see that some waste of oxygen decided they must've forgotten there key to my lock. I've thought about investing in the boxes and all that but the way things are these days people are steeling them no matter what you put them in or how you secure them.

So my friend just call me and read me the comments on the facebook post. Would someone please post this to the facebook page.
I said he is a suspect in the camera thief I don't know for 100% he is the one but he was the only one that walked by my two cameras that watched the bait cam from a close distance. This guys walks by with bolt cutters in hand and bait camera is gone. I didn't want to show background because the guy would then know how I got his pictures making it harder to catch him again when he strikes again on someone else camera. The pictures were blurry because I zoomed in on the pictures to see him closer up. Maybe we should worry about identifying the guy instead of criticizing the pictures of the guy and saying I need a new camera. I am pretty sure my cameras are just fine that is not the problem the problem is that people don't focus on the real issue!
Thanks to all those that are just trying to help.
-
Looks like you brighten the picture to try to make it clear. If someone can clean up the picture to make it a clear clean picture that would help.
-
Put it on Washington state trail cam pic facebook page.

What a jackball. Hope he gets caught. Thanks for posting, I love it when thieves get put in the spotlight. I wonder if he has shaved his facial hair and died his hair yet?
-
Just wondering, is there no doubt that what he's carrying is bolt cutters? I'm just looking at the pictures on my phone so I can't see it very well.

Tagging.
Good luck finding this POS

Motive for these guys???
Don't know the details...maybe the guy dug out and ditched to create a wallow 5 years ago and has been baiting and salting every year since with well hidden cam and now a new guy shows up and puts cams on the wallow he created. Pissed he doesnt know what to do so bloggers suggest he cut em down.
Whatz the motive otherwise? $20 pawnshop cash for camera? Can't see for dude in camo but maybe?

Hope you get some resolution to this

If anyone has had cams in this area I have for many years. I don't care that anyone else has cams or hunts it. the fact is that if you steal my cams you are going to be caught on camera at some point! I can't stand thieves and I am tired of them getting away with it. I have tons of angles of the bolt cutters. I have looked at tons of pictures of different styles of brush cutter and bolt cutters and I am 95% that they are bolt cutters and the fact that my cameras were cutoff the tree kinda helps prove someone used bolt cutters and he seems to be the only one carrying cutters by my cam. The guys putting the blame on me for setting a baitcam. Well I really set it for getting pictures but it is the easiest to see but gets the most pictures that way and I always cover my trails leading into it with cams too. And for your info I get pictures of animals on one cam but not always one on the other one! So maybe you should try buying more cams and see the difference in how many animals are missed at one cam site or who has been messing with it my case!
-
Good for you getting this guy on camera, and I think it's well worth the time setting up some a hole if he's going to f with your stuff! Who gives to rats azz if he sets up cameras to catch a theif!!!! Catching a thief is the point here, not why did you take the time to set someone up??????!!!!! Damn!
-
I hate thieves too!! Somebody will I'd them sooner or later.

Funny how that sounds just as possible as anything else.
Not sure if this is public or private land but if its not private then you really don't have a argument other than "I hate thieves". Seems like you went out of your way to lay a trap to catch someone, what was the motivation?
No blaming the victim. Theft is theft. Taking someone else's property that a reasonable person would assume would be reclaimed by the owner at some point, even on public land, is theft.

Ethics is up to the perpetrator individual, and none of any body else's business, according to quite a few folks on this site.

You mean you can't just go hop in and take that brand new rig parked at the trailhead during hunting season?

Trail Camera thieves are scum! Not only do they steal a camera, but all the work it represents. I can't stand thieves!!! Sadly many hunters will do about anything if they have no fear of getting caught. :bash:

Apparently some think so.

Not true, Abandoned means left on purpose with no intent of recovery. Doesn't matter where it is. A game camera is surely not that. I learned that in Business law class. Even if lost, with out intent to abandon the property it still belongs to the rightful owner.
I watched a gal get arrested at a restaurant for taking a girls phone that she had left in the bathroom by mistake. She went to retrieve it-Gone. Cops were called. My wife knew who had picked it up and told the cops. The gal tried to hide it but was arrested for theft and hauled off.
Some one drops a wallet, or leaves it at the checkout counter, next customer picks it up and leaves, Did they steel it ?
-
No one yet has an idea for motive? If its a hunter its probably not for pawn shop money? Or is it? Maybe guy hates cameras on public land? Or maybe just on his spots? No one on this post has suggested there is any reason to justify theft I'm just wondering why would anyone want to steal a cheap game cam?

I read posts on this site almost every day...for a long time. This has to be the craziest post thread yet. We clearly have a thief, a victim and then so many second guessers going down rabbit holes or victim blamer's...I am amazed. Morals or lack of morals are clear... If you cut a secured or even take a non secured camera from a tree that is not yours, you are a thief. If you find a camera in the middle of a dirt road that fell off the back of a truck, and you cant identify an owner, then your the benefactor of another's poor luck. If anyone needs advice, I recommend you do not be a thief.... To the original poster, I hope you find the thief and justice is served.
-
I admit it looks bad for the dude, and I hate a thief also, but wouldn't it be funny if he was identified, and proven he didn't do it? I too have walked through the woods with a pair of bolt cutters to cut the Python cable on my camera, because the lock had froze up. I could very easily have walked by another cam, and had my pic taken. But it does look bad for him. I'll just wait until it's proven he stole it before I convict him.

Notice I didn't say "most". It is "many". I've personally had several cameras stolen, and almost everyone I know that runs a lot of cameras has. :twocents:

Setting out some cameras tomorrow, this thread inspired me to write a few messages. I did put my phone number at the top if someone wants to see some pics. I'd rather share than have someone try to steal it.

I think putting your name on the cam may be the best thing I can do,cause you need to be able to prove that it is yours without a doubt.I don't think I would post pics of this guy without a pic of him in the act of taking it.If you find him he may and could sue you for slander of his name.So in the end you may not want to find him.
Here some reading that can shed some light on the subject.
What Is Abandoned Property?
As a general matter, if a property owner intentionally abandons property, they lose ownership of it. When property is intentionally abandoned, it belongs to nobody until it is found. At that point, title (ownership) transfers to whoever finds it, and takes it with intent to take ownership. This is the general rule created by the common law.
Lost, mislaid, and abandoned property are categories of the common law of property which deals with personal property or chattel which has left the possession of its rightful owner without having directly entered the possession of another person. Property can be considered lost, mislaid or abandoned depending on the circumstances under which it is found by the next party who obtains its possession.
There is an old saying that possession is nine-tenths of the law, perhaps dating back centuries. This means that in most cases, the possessor of a piece of property is its rightful owner without evidence to the contrary. More colloquially, this may be called finders, keepers. The contradiction to this principle is theft by finding, which may occur if conversion occurs after finding someone else's property.
The rights of a finder of such property are determined in part by the status in which it is found. Because these classifications have developed under the common law of England, they turn on nuanced distinctions. The general rule attaching to the three types of property may be summarized as: A finder of property acquires no rights in mislaid property, is entitled to possession of lost property against everyone except the true owner, and is entitled to keep abandoned property.[1] This rule varies by jurisdiction.[2]
slander
n. oral defamation, in which someone tells one or more persons an untruth about another, which untruth will harm the reputation of the person defamed. Slander is a civil wrong (tort) and can be the basis for a lawsuit. Damages (payoff for worth) for slander may be limited to actual (special) damages unless there is malicious intent, since such damages are usually difficult to specify and harder to prove. Some statements, such as an untrue accusation of having committed a crime, having a loathsome disease or being unable to perform one's occupation, are treated as slander per se since the harm and malice are obvious and therefore usually result in general and even punitive damage recovery by the person harmed. Words spoken over the air on television or radio are treated as libel (written defamation) and not slander on the theory that broadcasting reaches a large audience as much as if not more than printed publications.

You put quite a bit of info about abandoned property... but guess what, it wasn't abandoned. It was placed there for an amount of time the OP wants to place it, safeguarded by a lock, with the intent of going back to retrieve it. He temporarily left it there, locked up, and was coming back. But if you think it was abandoned property, please let me know where you leave your car or truck. You leave it there, locked, with the intent of coming back to get it. It is exactly the same as the OP and his trail cam. But... in this case you keep calling it abandoned. So by that same logic, when you leave your car or truck, even locked, it is also abandoned and by your definition the title transfers to whoever finds it. GPS coordinates or simple address works for me.
Call a rat a rat, a thief a thief, they can get their feelers hurt all they want, doesn't change the facts of the situation.

What? Are you defending the taking of someones trail cam? Are you seriously?
-
What? Are you defending the taking of someones trail cam? Are you seriously?
No ,but just putting info on here of what law is.Is there something wrong that.I wouldn't call somebody a thief without better proof.
-
What? Are you defending the taking of someones trail cam? Are you seriously?
He didn't but some valid points were made:
Can you absolutely prove its your camera ?
Can you absolutely prove the accused took it?
If not then maybe step carefully even though you are or may be 100% certain of what happened. The law doesn't care whats right or wrong, only what can be proved.
That sounds like some reasonable advice.
-
Putting the law out there? You yourself just mentioned recently you have had issues with theft of salt blocks then blow up at anyone and everyone that did a good thing by making sure you knew what is and isnt bait to hopefully spare you the possibility of a citation when you were not intentionally looking for one. Now you cite abandonment to justify theft and say im just citing the law. Spare me. I do agree to an extent regarding proof. I think ge is right but the proof is yet to come.
-
I engrave both inside and outside of my cameras so that I can at least prove it's mine, no matter who ends up with it..........if it ever turns up again

1) you should have proof before you put someone's pic on the internet, and Facebook that there a thief.otherwise it may be considered slander.
2)Writing your name or taking pic,or serial numbers of your stuff is not new,its no different then when your house gets ripped off,you have to this to prove the stuff yours if you want it returned.
3Off-topic but ok,it fully aware of the laws on baiting bears, and baiting deer and elk,and many others laws .I don't think I need understanding these laws from anybody on here ., But thanks for sharing.
4)I think the owner of this forum may be able to shed some light to you as a mod about the laws of slander.

How about you go to the nearest highway pull over ,lock your car up,come back in 48 hours and tell if it's still there. You might learn something about abandonment laws.

Poor comparison, not even remotely the same
How about we stick to the woods. You're giving the impression that if someone leaves a locked TC in the woods with the intent of returning to get it that it is abandoned property and the person who takes it is the new rightful owner.
To make it a fair comparison and not a stupid one, you go hunting and leave your truck in the woods locked up, with the intent of coming back to get it. Just as the trail cam, according to you, it is abandoned property and the person who takes it is the new rightful owner.
Or how about you just leave stuff alone that isn't yours :twocents:

Hunter399 Leaving a vehicle on the highway is a safety issue. You don't lose possession of the vehicle because it was "abandoned" and towed. You lost your car because you didn't pay the wrecker to get it back.
If your car is not worth the impound fee and you choose not to pay the wrecker, you have then abandoned your vehicle.
Look into what it takes to have an abandoned vehicle removed from your property. I've done it and it's not as simple as you think. Do some homework on it.
You seem to be missing or intentionally overlooking those last details that would make you think like a normal reasonable person.
It sounds like your working hard at creating a justification that a normal, reasonable person would not.

This thread reminds me of the "dummy camp" discussions where the straight laced among us quoted laws that say any tent etc. on public land that goes 24 hours without somebody sleeping in it is officially abandoned and is fair game for trashing or stealing. Do those same stupid laws apply to a trail camera on public land?
If so, why should any of us buy a camera when we can go hunting for one in the woods?
-
It will all be a moot point soon as the tree huggers get cams banned on public land for privacy - litter - fixed drone issues. Its happening elsewhere already. Then what happens when you find an illegal cam?
-
Obviously you take it and turn it in. Clearly it is abandoned property and the scofflaw needs to be prosecuted and points given out.
Insert not serious voiceover above please.

I don't think you guys can read and understand what I posted very well.
Property can be considered lost, mislaid or abandoned depending on the circumstances under which it is found by the next party who obtains its possession
When it's locked to a tree ,I'm sure it is stolen.
Compare a car with a title of owner ,to game cam that's personal property is a poor example.
Don't expect returned unless you can prove its yours .
I do think as more time goes on,more times wardens have to deal with this kind of thieft ,game cam laws may change in the future.Look at tree stands and hunting blinds on public ground ,if someone is in your blind before you ,they have the right to be there.similar laws will come for game cams.
Done with this topic ,take what I posted about abanded property anyway u like. For all of that follow the law to letter ,I don't see you having a problem. :twocents:

I like the example. It points out similarities and some obvious differences. I bought property with multiple abandoned vehicles on it and a bear stand. I jumped through the hoops to get the vehicles removed. The tree stand was different. I taped a note to it along with an empty bottle of the owners favorite bear bait. Said come talk to me, your gear is on my property with a phone #. I removed those items some time latter without ever getting a phone call. :dunno: :chuckle:
Maybe he's the guy that tried to steal one of my cams down there. All of the cameras that I've lost have been on private property. I guess trespassers don't like having their pictures taken. While I can't I.D. them all, I've gotten pretty good at putting names to them and thinning them out of my little slice of American Pie.

Multiple trail cams at one spot works wonders.

Yep, that's how I got a trespasser to come clean. "No I wasn't on your property and no you don't have a photo of me" Then you show them the photo from the camera that they didn't open up and delete the photos from and the story changes, "Oh yeah that was me on that camera but I didn't delete the photos from the other camera. What happened was....." Blah blah blah.
The guy on your cam is certainly someone that I would like to talk to if I were you. Good luck on catching whoever took your cam.
-
Everyone should carry bolt cutters I guess especially in you had preconceived intentions of stealing a cam.

Is it me, or is this thread a perfect example of how people love to be hostile to each other?
If it IS me who is imagining things about this thread, feel free to be hostile towards me. That way I'll know for sure.

Seems normal for this time of the year. Are you sure the tinfoil didn't slip down and obscure your vision?
Only kidding - don't verbally assault me. :chuckle:

Reading this thread makes me think half the people who have commented must have actually thought OJ was innocent also.

I'm just excited I can claim everything I come across in the woods as mine. Beer, BBQ meats in coolers, trucks... it was just sitting in the woods, you guys must have abandoned it and didn't want it anymore. Finders keepers suckers :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Just make sure that originally belonged to one of those who are so generous with what equipment belongs to others and I don't have any problem with you staking claim to it

I think putting your name on the cam may be the best thing I can do,cause you need to be able to prove that it is yours without a doubt.I don't think I would post pics of this guy without a pic of him in the act of taking it.If you find him he may and could sue you for slander of his name.So in the end you may not want to find him.

this is pure bullcrap-I hope you catch the thief! I also have had cams ripped off and it sucks. I might try the same thing in one particular spot
