I just got done reading this book called "The Road"....it scared the hell out of me.
It got me thinking, because I never want to be at the mercy of the mob and unable to protect my family.
Crime is rising here in Spokane. Criminals are getting more and more desperate. You used to be able to avoid it by carefully choosing when/where you go, but know I read of people getting mugged in places that I go regularly. It will only get worse as the economy gets worse.
So, I come hat in hand looking for direction. I am very comfortable around rifles for hunting, but I have never owned a pistol or a shotgun. I need to get started with the purchasing and also get some training as well. I'm on the eastside. I would rather start with simple and effective and as I become more proficient upgrade if possible.
Talk to me about makes, models, calibers of pistols or shotguns. Talk to me about what to look for in a good gun shop/school. Talk to me about what it takes to get a carry permit. Should I throw some self defense classes in the mix? Any books or other resources you would recommend? Anything you share to help move me toward this goal I value. I will not be a helpless victim.
I value your opinion,
Dave

Call sharp shooter indoor range. I know they have some classes. Since your a beginner (with pistols) I'd recommend starting off with a revolver. My buddy poo poo'd me when I told him that and he ended up capping himself in the leg.

I prefer a small revolver for a carry pistol. It's a S&W 642 in 38 special + P. Quite often I'll have a 40 or 45 in the truck.
Here's mine

I love revolvers but I have a hard time sticking a loaded gun with no safety in my pants. I prefer an auto with a safety for IWB carry.
You will hear that you need .40 or .45 for protection but a .38 or 9mm or even .380 are probably better bets for someone new to handguns.
I suggest that go rent a few different styles and calibers at a gun range to get the feel of what you prefer.
For a CPL, go to your local Law Enforcement office and ask for the form. Fill it out and wait 30 days. That's all it takes.
-
I just picked up a Beretta 92F from Kesselrings on Saturday.
I carried one for 8 years in the Army. Good guns.
I also purchased a Blackhawk Serpa holster for it.
Going in today to file my CPL paperwork. :IBCOOL:
-
I agree CP, but you can carry on an empty chamber with a revolver, a pull of the trigger revolves the chamber to a live round. I'm the same way about cocked and locked auto's.
Sharp shooters does have guns to rent.
As far as conceiled carry permits. You go down to the courthouse fill out the paperwork, get your prints taken, pay the $70.00 or so, and wait. I think the time to get a conceiled permit is right now.
-
Definately want to avoid the leg situation. :)
I was thinking sharp shooting maybe as they were the only one I was aware of that gives classes.
Rental to try them out sounds like a good idea.
What is your opinion about self-defense classes? Anybody taken them? I know it sounds kinda wussy but I'm a big guy and growing up I got in some fights but was always encouraged to avoid if possible. Most guys didn't want to mess with me cause I was bigger than them. As a guy ages he losses some of that confidence I guess. :)
Thanks for the input guys.

There are some NRA sanctioned classes that might be helpful, basic pistol, personal protection in the home, and personal protection outside the home. They are usually taught by gun clubs and/or shooting ranges.
-
I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago... my brothers, my sister, and my brother in law all carry concealed pistols. They've been telling me for years that I needed to at least own a pistol for home protection... even if I didn't want to pack it. I finally relented and went on a massive search for the best pistol FOR ME. I ended up with a Springfield XD Service (4") in 9mm. For carry defense, and home defense... I figured the 9 would be just as effective as the .40 or the .45, because I could practice with it twice as much... and the capacity is much better. Now, I pack it pretty much everywhere... I almost feel naked without it.
Get out and shoot a couple of IDPA matches... that's the best concealed pistol personal defense type training I can think of. The guys are always very helpful, and the fact is... it's just plain fun. A word of advice though... go get your CPL RIGHT NOW!!! even if you don't have a pistol yet, if you're looking to get one... better get the lisence now.

the taurus judge. Shoots 45 colt and .410 shot gun shells  Built with self defence in mind it would also be a great scouting/hunting sidearm for when anything comes out from a grouse to a bear.
Makes the bad guys dissapear fast.

CPL license costs vary from county to county.
Whatcom County-$55.25
Skagit County-$55.25
Snohomish County- $55.25
King county is $60
Pierce County- $55.25
Thurston County- 55.25

Thats a gnarly little pistola right there, especially when it comes to self defense. I have shot one however, and would not recommend it for someone new to handguns. A 45 long colt is a pretty stiff round and the 410 shell going off gets your attention if your not used to shooting hi-power pistola's. For someone new to handguns I would recommend a 9mm in semi-auto or a 38/357 in revolver. Both are inexpensive to shoot and easy to get comfy with. Another option would be a short barrelled 22magnum revolver. Almost no recoil, fairly inexpensive to shoot, and definitely will get someone's attention when hit with it, and little risk of pass through's and the innocent bystander getting hit. My personal home and pack weapon for the "hood" is a Glock 9mm with Hi-cap mags and tritium sights. In the woods I pack my Ruger alaskan in 454 casull.
-
I carry a modded SP101 in 357. Its small and has serious power. Not only is it a good home/self defense pistol as it shoots 38's, 38+P and the 357 magnum. But its good in the woods too for critters up to about 400 pounds.
Imo, 38's and 9's are for tin cans. 357 is for that dead MoFo that picked the wrong house!

Cripes Goldtip... ya gatta be your size to pack and shoot that bugger :chuckle:
Glock in a 40 S/W would be my choice if it were purely as a self defense gun. A 357 in a wheel gun is tough to beat based on the points others have made.
-
For home defense you can’t beat a short barreled 12 gauge, open cylinder pump action. #4 Buck shot if you have neighbors, #00 if you don’t.

thanks for putting in some common sense gold tip. got a little excited. :chuckle:

I have a Model 27 Glock in 40 SW. It shoots a 155gr at a blistering 1300 fps. for 582 ft. lbs. SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT. Everyone I know that has one ABSOLUTY Luvs it!!! Including myself. It has some internal parts from Lone Wolf and night sights. It is my favorite gun to shoot!!!

Yeah, that 454 casull is one heck of a hand cannon, and with that short barrel it's perfect for packing while bowhunting and I can just shoot in the direction of something and it falls over dead! :chuckle:
-
If you have small ones still in the house I would go with an semi auto, 1911 perhaps; officers or a commander model. The reason is that if they a get hold of the revolver kids a strong enough to pull the trigger with an auto you can leave the chamber empty and it will take some strength to pull the slide back especially if you have a 18 or 20 recoil spring.
My carry pistol is a commander model in .38Super. Home defense gun is a Mossberg 500 with an 18.5 barrel. A pump shotgun has a distinct sound when being cocked and I think most people know what that is. If your an intruder and you hear that sound, that's the que to run.
You know how people shot themselves, it is because they are not paying attention, fooling around with the gun or suicide. I know this fellow who shot himself in the foot with a .45LC, how did he do it? he was trying to quick draw with it.
If I had to chose a revolver it would be a Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel.

That's what I have, home defense shotgun, ready to go with buckshot.

Plenty of gun advice here for ya, go shoot them, rent them.
Go sign up for a martial arts class, not some Joe dude tough guy class, a class aimed at young people is good. it is lots of fun, get your kids into it. Teaches respect and discipline. You will find after a couple years a large amount of confidence.

just his mean look and that bad ass cape would run me off
-
I already have a mean look....I am a teacher after all, But a cape..?..That would probably MAKE someone want to kick my ass. :chuckle:
But my wife will argue that a cape is cheaper than a gun and I already dress like a dork so there is no down side. :chuckle:
Thanks guys

+1
This is my carry with silver tip 155gr. I also have the +1 on the clips for a little more grip. (And Night Sites.) I shot a coyote at 90 yds and took it right off its feet.
I would recommend some training if you are new to pistols and CWP but that is your choice. Here is one place I would recommend to get it.
http://www.firearmsacademy.com/
You also have to think about how you are going to CWP. I recommend Blade-tec holsters but there are many good ones.
Hope this helps,
Jay

I perfer a revolver especialy for those unfamiliar with handguns. I also have a shorty 870 thats never far.

Supposing everything in the live fire exchange works out in your favor ? Two warning shots go into center mass and the bullet meant for real goes into the bad guy's forehead. There you are standing over a corpse...
The advice is to say to the responding police: I thought he/they were going to kill me. There was no other choice but to kill him/them first. I'm really upset and don't know what else I could have done. Then let the police know you are too upset to talk right now.
We American's still have a right to remain silent; use it.
Tough to conjure up a scene where an attorney is going to make a quick appearance. Do lawyers really chase around after ambulances? Public defenders are assigned cases at arraignments.
-
Can't decide between the Glock 26 ( 9mm ) and the Glock 27 (.40cal ). 9mm is cheaper to shoot and I have a bunch of 9mm rounds. A Lot of people think the .40 cal is a better round.
-
45acp is a people killer. Flying ashtrays. Really soft on the shot as well. Only flying 700 or 800 fps i think.

The ol' 12 g pump is the best for home defense.

I would not buy a handgun or any gun from sharpshooting indoor range, there prices are high and they are snobs, not a very friendly shop..if you like I could recommend a good shop for you, I know the spokane market very well. But, I would say you should go thru a class even if its at sharpshooting. I carry a Taurus .357 and I love its accuracy. i used to carry a glock 19 and I regret selling it, awesome gun. If I was you I would get a small revolver in .38 or .357 and get a ankle holster. PM me with any questions you have.
-
I've got to get one of these:
-
:yike:
love it!
-
sweet. looks like ball bearings in that shell.
-
For those guys who carry a revolver, How many speadloaders do you carry?
-
I carry a Kimber in .45 ACP. I carry it everywhere I go, I have for years. I prefer 1911's, and I also prefer .45's. That is my choice, everyone has to decide for themselves. Go to a range where you can rent handguns and shoot a variety of them. Do it several times, then shop around for the best price on what you want.
Go get your concealed permit now, today. It is easy, inexpensive and worth it. I got mine (12 years ago) and it took 3 days. My brother got his 2 years ago and it took 3 days. The thing to remember when waiting for your permit to come in is that it is up to the Chief of Police's discretion. While it only took 3 days for my original, it took 2 weeks for my last renewal. Try and have your permit before you buy a handgun if possible. There is no waiting period for concealed carry permit holders on handgun purchases. You can leave the store with it the day you buy it.
The most important thing is to BE RESPONSIBLE. Concealed carry permit holders have a history of being responsible, let's keep it that way.
-
none.. 5 .357's should be enough
-
The thing to remember when waiting for your permit to come in is that it is up to the Chief of Police's discretion.
Not sure what you meant by that. WA is a “shall issue” state; shall issue within 30 days. Neither the Chief of Police nor anyone else can withhold issuing you a CPL if you are legally entitled to own a firearm
-
Yup, just did mine yesterday. What a good feeling it was to get the paperwork done. The people working at the Snohomish County court house were actually pleasant and were very helpful. They actually seem to enjoy helping people get their CPL.
-
I also applied for one in Washington yesterday. They told me they would call next week and have me come in for finger prints and issue a Permit at that time. :) A while back I took the Utah CWP course. It is suppose to be good in over 30 states. But Washington is not one of them. I am still waiting to here back on that one. They told us a minimum of six weeks after we sent in our apps. hmmmmmmmm I believe its been about six weeks now?

For those guys who carry a revolver, How many speadloaders do you carry?
None. I am not who thinks that I will be in a gun fight, dodging around parked cars like in the movies. Bottom line, if some guy tries to jack you up and you stick ANYTHING in his mug, ge's gonna get the hell out of town in a hurry. Maybe..... maybe one or two shots fired and the bad guy AND me is going to get the hell out of dodge. I'm all about light and easy to shoot handguns in town. Nobody will convince me I'm going to need 3 mags with 16 rounds each. Besides whats the saying? "any gun is better than no gun"
That said. I carry a full size CZ 75b .40 cal, Kimber 1911 .45, Or a .44 mag when out in the boonies where conceilment is not as big an issue.

I have been involve in gun battles before when I served in desert storm desert shield. I know what it feels like to be shot at and how it feels when your bullet hits another human being. Do not tell by just pulling a gun on some one face will make them running, Ive been there done that, it does not work all the time, you know what else they shoot back.
One way to get rid of them is to over power them with superior fire power, ie shooting towards the enemy as you maneuver towards their position for the kill. That is where you need all the rounds you got on you, if you don't then your dead meat.
If you did not notice my signature it says " Semper Fi" Indicating the Marine Corps moto of Always Faithful.
So there Gutpile, "the expert on gun battles" how many shoot out have you had and how many confirm kills for you?
Tell me your experience not your theories. DON"T INSULT ME AGAIN

You had me at Semper Fi, but when you start on confirmed kills, all I see is hot air. Come on Sonny, a man doesn't brag about confirmed kills even "if" he has any. Now I view you as a braggart and will ignore you from this point forward.

as a former police officer I carried two speed loaders and two dumps,A 12 gauge and a mini 14.Now I carry two speed loaders.for Hunting my 44 mag and bullits on my side.Something we called mental masturbation.go over in your mind many scenarios which you could get into, and what you should do and how to react, practice this in your mind, over and over.when the fight or flight kicks in automatic co pilot will help.Fight even if youve been shot, many cops were killed because they were shot and stopped, when they could have fought back.I never had to shoot someone but Ive had several times when it was close.every night I decided I was going home.
-
12 gauge, thanks for your service. I think your question; "how many speed loaders..." is a valid question, but points out that a revolver isn't that usefull in a firefight today. I trained with a revolver, and then with a semiauto. You would know; that more bullets can only help you when things get really ugly. I have never been there. Most of us have not. You have, so your reality is a bit different than ours.
A good ol' revolver, or shotgun or rifle is still a great deterant and self defense weapon, and I don't think many would argue with you that when things go bad, having a semiauto with multiple mags is definitely the way to go.
I dont think anyone was trying to Insult you. :dunno:

Here is a through webpage on self defense and where the legal lines into aggression get crossed.
http://www.useofforce.us/ (http://www.useofforce.us/)
An a little quote:
"Preclusion is the factor that is missing in most self-defense arguments, and thus the reason most fail. You must remember that you bear the burden of proof; until you prove otherwise, the law merely sees two equal citizens in a dispute. You can say, “He tried to hit me,” but then the police and the courts will ask, “Why didn’t you _____?” You must have no options to offer to fill in that blank—there must have been no other courses of action you could have taken to maintain your safety except the use of force. Otherwise, you’re just fighting because you want to, and that’s a crime."
Just so that it's not missed here is the link to a law professor and retired police "interviewer" video agreed that anything you say can be used against you although anything you say cannot be used FOR you.

Well 12 gauge if that was in any way an insult then you may want to add me to your ignore list because it surely wasn't intentional. Don't insult me with your mil experience either, your not the only one who has served.
I stand buy my answer. When packing a revolver in town I see no need to carry speedloaders. I'm not in war, I'm not a cop. The worst that'd probably happen is that some kid will want my wallet. In the house I've got a whole different package for them. Out in the boonies I carry semi autos and spare mags. In town I don't.
Well hell, if thats an insult then we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think you need to calm down a little bit and not insult me.
