I really miss catching them ,what kind of boat is needed.
-
I miss catfishing myself. Anyone know of any places on the wet side? How about around Spokane?
-
I really like some moving water always seem to taste better.A bunch of us would set crawdad traps, and fish all night long what a blast,we would frog also..Damn good fellowship
-
I hear at the spillway on the back side of PotHoles lake down from mardon is a great channel fish site
-
Sprague Lake used to be good for channel cats. Not sure if they re-planted them.
-
Rasbo we stay at willow bar about 3 miles above the cental ferry bridge. It has a boat ramp and camping sites and places for trailers but no electricty or water. Most of the boats are about 18 feet but some 15 foot smoker crafts to. We catch both blue and chanell cats and smallmouth. Most of the fish are about 6 pounds but have caught some bigger.
-
I'm sure a boat is nice but you don't have to have one at Lyons ferry or Central ferry on the Snake, you can catch plenty right off shore, chicken livers and nightcrawlers.
-
Man all this talk about catfish has made me hungry for some deep fried cat and hushpuppies. I just happen to be maken them for dinner tonight :chuckle:
-
When do they bite good down at lions ferry pasco?
-
WELL IM DOWN FOR SOME OF THAT! Camping and fishing, how hard is the water running
-
probably May and June but I know a guy that catches them all through the summer
-
swafford pond down by mossy rock has some nice catfish...i think they are bullheads though.
there is a little pond/lake in whitecenter that we use to catch catfish in, again they are bullheads. biggest being about 2lbs. there is also one little frog pond that i have caught them up to 5lbs in.
ive fished the snake a few times for cats. averaging 5lbs and the biggest being around 20lbs (caught by my buddy).

We fish the first week of June over by central ferry on the snake river. We use a boat and if it isn't blowing we do real good.
Lyons Ferry is where we go, up the mouth of the Palouse river during the spring spawn, we take a 17' Alumaweld and do really good. Its fun fishing. If they are biting you are in for a lot of fun. If it is to windy you don't even need to bother launching your boat. We tried anchoring last year with a 50 pound rock and it still managed to drag us. I catch my bait from shore before I go out but I've never got a cat on that part of the river from shore. Down along the snake near Lewiston I've got them under grain stations.
-
Here's a nice channel catfish taken out near the dam at Potholes.
-
thats a sweet fish
-
Nice Cat Can I ask what you caught it on
-
SWEET, two things, I see that was in winter, were you targeting cats or was it a fluke.
Secondly lets have a catfish get together this summer. I miss catching catfish when I was growing up in MO.
-
I hear you Machias, it was my way of life as a kid. I used to fish heavily for the out of the Ohio River in WVA growing up with chicken liver or gizzards... A good night we'd catch 30-40... Throw in a couple bullhead and a hundred Carp we be busy..... Remember this was back when kids could actually stay out all night fishing and Mom and Dad wouldn't get worried, a couple tires on the fire and it burned all night long, til Dad would pick us up in the morning to go home...
-
I love to fish and I make a pretty mean fish taco. I'm game. Let's go fishin'!!
-
I love catfishing. Wish there were more of em around. I've pretty much only caught em in the Snake. I like to drift and bobber fish for em just like you would steelhead... same gear and everything, usually just deeper and in the summer when it's warm.
-

That was a cold trip, but was pretty fun. We released six very large cats that day. I have caught them on anything from hot dogs to chicken gizzards/liver. Awesome tasting fish and very fun to fight.
-
Nice fish. Looks like some fun!

I said that. That's all I'm going to say, sorry. They were caught and released in Potholes res. Plenty more where they came from
-
Man I think I got some cats to catch. My sis is sending me some good old Texas Stink bait so I think I will go feed the kitties :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
woodywsu, I'm willing to be blindfolded and put in a trunk for the trip there. :chuckle: :chuckle:
My daughter has her first High School Equestrian meet in Moses Lake starting the 20th of March for three days. I'm going catfishing!!! Yippee
-
Hey Mach, Let's go slay em. I'm game
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Look into fishing down toward Soda Lake also. Plus you can get into some early spawning Walleye. Maybe send me a pm before you come over and I might give ya a little insight on where it might be good. I plan on hitting a few spots this weekend for rainbows and browns
-
WHERE can I park my motor home :dunno: :chuckle:
-
This will be a blast, What do you guys think end of May beginning of Jun for the get together and catfishing friendly tournament???
-
Sounds like a great time. I cannot commit because I have a little one showing up really soon. But let me know and I'll see if I can make it.
-
I'd be in for June, after turkey season.

Good point, I like early June. Snake River? Potholes Res? Osage River down in MO? Or some other spot? What do you think?
-
Doesn't matter to me. Shoot, we could carpool and split the cost Machias.
-
HAVE CATFISH WILL TRAVEL

ive always done best at the mouth of the snake on the columbia. water is usually really shallow and we would walk out chest deep to cast lol.
-
Another good spot I've caught some nice ones is the Walla Walla river down towards the mouth. This thread is making me want to dig out the old deep fat fryer.
-
I've had some awesome days on the Walla Walla. About 3 miles up from the mouth at an old bridge abutment. There are some killer holes in there. I know a guy who noodles around there and he claims he can throw 100 lbs of fish on the bank in an hour. Sounds pretty insane. Love to see him do it, but I wouldn't want to get caught. Noodling is illegal in Washington.
-
you eastsiders name a spot,is it a man thing or familys doesnt matter ,might have to deep fry a turkey too.
-

that wouldnt work for me,Im not feeding my hand to nothing :chuckle:
-
Ya, My Dad use to noodle in his day till he grabbed ahold of a water mocasin. He said it wasn't much fun after that. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I guess that is the nice part of noodling up here, you don't have to worry about those snapping turtles and water mocasins. But I still don't think I can do it, I get enough of a rush hooking and fighting them. Wish I could of seen a few that I broke off.
-
Last week of May first week of June would be fun, I would like to join if I could. I've had good luck at the mouth of the Palouse, camping at Lyons Ferry. Great spot, lots of spots to camp, and they have a good little restaurant. I would bring down a 17' Alumaweld works for a couple guys. Could be fun. That could be our eastside meet. Heck I would be willing to bring my gass BBQ and we could have a geat time.
-
I already can't wait and yes, I say bring the families if you want, we need someone to open the stink bait jars :chuckle:
I will go whever you guys decide, my mouth is already watering. Can't wait to set the hook on a nice fat channel cat!!!!
-
Hey Fred, I will let you know when the stink bait gets here ok?
-
We will need a good place for bank and boat fishing, lets not let this go away,it will be good times
-
The mouth of the Tucanon has good bank access with cats holding just off of it for bank fishing and in the spring they actually go up into it to spawn. Plus you can camp there and I think there is a launch there. I would have to check on the launch but I know there are several good holes out in front of it for anchoring. When we went to Lyons Ferry this year we talk to the guy that empties all the fish cans at all the cleaning stations and he was taking out a 55 gal pale every day from that site. Would be a good spot to looking into.
-
Can I get in on this also?
I have a nice camper for camping but would have to bank fish it, I can't pull the bass boat and tha camper at the same time
Joe

heck ya west side invasion of the east,
-
Well let me know when and where and I am there....

I think we should tentatively say the last week of April the first week of June. That has been the best catfish time in the past for me because of the spawn. The key depends of weather and run off. That is why I really don't think we should set a firm date until it gets closer. Weather down on the Snake can get bad. Big storms that time of year.
We will make a post as it gets closer. I have state track on Memorial day weekend, last year I went the week after and did good. I think we should get as many people involved as possible. Maybe make a small tournament with cool prizes.
-
so do ya need to make resevations for camps,at lyons
-
Only weekend I am locked in for already is May 2nd and May 3rd. I have a big bass tournie on Moses Lake.
Joe
-
Teacherman is right on about the weather. We have always went the first week of june but it can blow really hard. Last year it blew so hard we had a cabelas guide model tent that it took three guys to hold down to get more tie downs to to keep it from blowing into the river. I have a 23 foot alumaweld that I would be willing to take if anyone wanted to fish out of a boat. I have a friend who works at a cannery and we really did good on salmon hearts. By the way teacherman did you ever find out what a 300 savage was worth.
-
It doesn't blow around here in late spring does it? :chuckle:
-
Hey guys. I'm in if you don't mind another. I will bring my 18' Alumaweld, open sled. I can take out a couple of guys. No idea where to fish for then, but I am sure we can figure it out
-
ya i usually fish the snake, yakima, wlla walla or palouse river every late may to early june.
-
When we fish the Palouse we usually go up the river a mile or so and tie off in the weeds against shore. Talk to my dad about it and he said we could bring groups of people up and down the river dropping them off on good holes in our 17' Alumaweld. There is also a little lake that you need to take your boat across the main bay to but then you can hike into it a couple hundred yards and catch limits of triploids if the cats are slow. Not many people do it because of the hassle, nice fish in it.
-
is lyons ferry where one would camp
-
Rasbo,
I am getting excited to do this, we going to convoy over there??
Joe
-
Count me in if you can find room... :hello:

There is an marina at Lyons ferry with a camp ground and a bait shop that also has a restaurant that serves good food. They have a big area above everything for camping with tents and a bunch of spots down below for RVs. You would need to reserve one of those spots ahead of time. Down by the water there are a bunch of docks that have bull head and squaw fish under them. The squaws make the best cat bait there is. I've never fished in there after dark, should be a good spot for channels and blues also. Early June most of the cats should be at river mouths, flats or actually up into the rivers spawning.
I think this should be our Eastside Meet...

thats sounds good, when a date is set I can make reservations,if everyone is okay with that spot
-
Already got the go ahead from the wife, so I should be there.
-
I'd love to go if you all wouldn't mind. June is good for me
-
I'm in too. I have a little boat with a 10hp and a big cooler. I had a cousin that lived and worked at the hatchery down there a few years back and we used to do really well fishing for cats and smallies in the Palouse and the Snake.
-
Lots of smallies!!! I will have to look around I have some pics from late last June I got one that was over 4 lbs.
-
what kind of weights will one need, never been there dont know the currents
-
Standard gear Rasbo, you shouldn't need anything special. The current isn't too strong so just some large slip sinkers should be fine. The marina has gear if you need anything.
-
thanks walt, the spousal unit really wants to go she loves to fish.anyone bringing the wives
-
Be glad to bring my wife with me
-
I would bring mine but she has the pleasure of working on saturdays
-
Wife and oldest daughter who is three. She has been asking all winter to go fishing. :chuckle:
-
I think the wife and kid will come. My step-daughter is 7 and loves to fish.
-
:) The lyons ferry marina is a great place to meet. I hope you don't mind another along. Not bringing anyone but my son is teacherman. He is my little guy, about 6 ft 260 lbs. My granddaughter who is three has landed large trout at Rufus woods so she expects action. Da stump
-
At Lyon's ferry there's a great little pond through the large culvert in the lower parking lot that is stocked with trout, if the cat fishing is slow you won't have any problem keeping the kids occupied there I take my 2 boys there 2 or 3 times every season
-
Rasbo got me thinking of food, we should make this thing a potluck at least one night... ;)
-
It looks like this is shaping up to be a good time. I will grab the reins if no one else wants to. How about either last weekend in May (29-31) or first weekend in June (5-7 and a full moon)? Any other suggestions? I can make it anytime so whatever works for the majority. Camping at Lyons Ferry. There is room at the marina as well as across the river next to the hatchery. I think the state park is day use only. I will post a number for the marina when I track it down and we decide on a date. As far as participants here are who I see from this thread:
rasbo & wife
giddyhitch & wife
TeacherMan and family
Da Stump
Machias and family
bigdave
SpokaneSlayer & family
BLKBEARKLR
Kbyers
300UltraMagShooter
buckhorn2 and grandson
Me
Anyone else? bankwalker? ThePascoKid? woodywsu? It is still a ways out so if you won't know until it arrives thats fine. As far as making it some sort of friendly competition, I'm game, lets hear some suggestions. Also potluck? I can bring a mess of venison chili. Just trying to get the ball rolling so that people can plan and make reservations. Let me know what you all think.
-
Sounds like a good idea, especially with everyone that is wanting to go. My only concern is weather. I was thinking Chicken, brots, and burgers on the BBQ. I will look at my past fishing notes and see when the best fishing has been. I hit it late last year and I think that was the 2nd week of Jone. End of May would be good. Bring heavy anchors and rain gear.
-
Make that Machias, Mrs. Machias and son...:) Anytime works for me.
-
We fish the first week of june over by central ferry on the snake river. We use a boat and if it is;nt blowing we do real good.
I like fishing the central ferry area and up river around willow landing. If you have a small boat you can baddle into some of the smaller backups and catch a bunch. Several years back my brother grandpa and me did that and caught 25 fish over 4lbs in 2hrs.

thats the key, if the fish are wanting to bite and you find them hold on.
-
I'm good for either of those dates. I might be bringing the Mrs just depends if she can get some time off from Uncle Sam.
I can bring elk brats, and elk italian sausages that I did myself, to get some different opinions on them, and I can also bring some other things just let me know what my part is to bring.
Usually whenever we do a potluck we break it down in sections, like meat, sidedishes, chips, sodas so everyone does not bring a bunch of meat with nothing else to go with it, just a suggestion.

:) Hi everyone, I contacted the Lyons Ferry Marina today and surprise, new owners. It sounds like there improving the store and cafe there so that is good news. I found out that they only have 18 full hookups for rv's so all of you with the portable condo's should reserve early. What this brings us to is we need to firm up the location and time so we can commence the planning. Walt you seem to have a great handle on the planning so you could be a great focal point for everything. I hope the first weekend in june is the time we hit it. Last year was hot at that time.
I will list what i found out for everyone.
Lyons Ferry Marina 1-509-399-8020
Tent space $15.00 daily
$95.00 weekly
RV space (dry) $15.75 daily
$100.00 weekly
RV space (full hookup $23.25 daily
$143.50 weekly
Boat launch fee $4.00
Moorage fee $12.00 nightly (open)
$15.00 Nightly (covered)
I hope that this helps. I know that a lot of guys have special spots that they prefere for fishing but this sounds like a great place to meet up.
-
Thanks for all the info Dad... :chuckle:
-
The first weekend of June would be better for me. May 30 and 31 are the last 2 days of turkey season. I hope to have my bird by then, but you never know. Last year, I filled my tag on the second to last day. But if the majority wants May, I'll probably still be there.
-
:yeah:
-
I would like to come . It would be me and my grandson. He loves to marinate deer or elk meat or about anything on a barberque.
-
So unless someone thinks different I say we book it for the first weekend in June. We should try and get a count on who is going and reserve a spot at Lyons Ferry. Anyone object to this idea? Once we get the dates in stone we need to make sure everyone knows about it. Post it on other parts of the board. I think the more people we have the better it will be.

I'm there the first weekend in june
-
Works for me. I don't think we'll be camping. Just doing a one-day thing. If there's another thread started, maybe everyone could include in their reply what they are bringing for the potluck so there isn't any duplicates. :twocents:
