Well this is certainly interesting. Guess we'll find out more soon unless someone else knows more. Curious to see if it's grizz or black.

I will try to get a hold of my brother in law. He is with DNR and that is part of his area.

Good deal thanks!

He's out still investigating. Sounds like a woman was walking her dogs and got maulled. She was life flighted out It might not be until tomorrow before I can get direct info. Lot of bears in that area.
-
It was a black bear sow with one (at least) cub. She was maybe a mile in and it sounds like her dog was messing with the cub and the sow rushed her and chewed up her back and legs pretty badly. She was airlifted from the parking area but was able to walk there

Okay, I'm tired of hearing about bear attacks being rare  not so much these past 10 years

This doesn't seem like a typical bear attack. Meaning it sounds quite preventable.
That's at first blush, going off of WAcoyotehunter's information.

Had a friend mauled by a brownie a couple years ago near Cordova, Alaska. Similar to this attack, but no cub involved. She took her dog and a friend's Karelian bear dog hiking on a popular trail that follows a productive salmon stream. The friend's dog ran out of sight, the came running back with a bear on it's tail. It knocked her down and grabbed her and shook her then walked off. She thought it was done and started to get up and it turned around and saw her and attacked again. Again it started walking off and she went to get up and it turned back and mauled her again. Ghis time she waited to make sure it was gone, then she walked back to her vehicle and drove herself to the emergency room where they stabilized her and medivaced her to Anchorage. She lost a good chunk of flesh from her shoulder and from a thigh.
Another friend from Hoonah. Alaska when I worked there, was out duck and goose hunting with his lab and came home and opened the door and out jumped his dog and it ran around his house as he was unloading gear. He heard some snarling and threw a shell in his shotgun as his dog raced around his house and through his legs with a brownie in pursuit. He shot it in the face and it ran off and was tracked down by Fish and Game and others and finished off.
Dogs are not always your friend when bears are involved. They will engage, then run back to the human when things get hot. By then the bear has his dander up which is never a good thing.

About ten years ago at Banner Forest, another bear attack that may have been avoided. Keep your dog on a leash!

Simple, if you mess with momma and cubs you will get your ass chewed off! Always pack a side arm or bear spray while in bear country.

It was a black bear. Reported in the Spokane paper a few days ago.

I'm always wondering if my Britt will bring back a bear, moose or other peeved critter. She brought me a mt lion already.
-
Mountain lion....bet that was fun to deal with.
My GSP would definitely bring back a bear, which is why the little heat seeking missile stays on a leash in the bear woods. Crazy high prey drive.
My dumb blonde lab on the other hand.....only if the bear is holding a tennis ball.

As far as I know, the only bear attack in NH at that time (there have been others since) occurred when a trail runner's dog took off after cubs and came back with the sow hot on his tail. As the guy watched in shock, his dog ran between his legs, the bear opened her jaws and bit his crotch hard running full tilt into him, then proceeded to shake him like a terrier killing a rodent :yike:. After, he was able to crawl to a road and flag down help. Never did hear a detailed report on the damage, but felt sympathy pain :'( just reading the account.

:yike: Ouch!!!
