Title: Tricities mercury guru
Post by: 95powersmoker on July 07, 2017, 05:10:41 PM
Hi there, I was curious if there is anybody in the tri cities area that might be willing to help a young guy out with a 8hp 4 stroke mercury outboard. I can't seem to get it running. Figured was worth asking before I resort to taking it to a shop.

So if you give it a shot of fuel in the throat does it start or try to?

There should also be a fuel filter in line perhaps that's crudded up. Check and see if it get fuel to the filter

Change the plugs, fresh gas (no corn liquor), a touch of fuel injector cleaner, and some marine stabil and she will go.  If is starts with a primed blub and ties your fuel line is bad

At this point, it didn't even try to start. It just leaks fuel what seems to be out the exhaust. It all started with what seemed like carb issues but I've had the carb out a half a dozen time and nothing seems to be fixing the issue. Gas is good non ethanol with a stabilizer. Plugs and filter are both new.

If you've got gas pouring out, it could be that either your float is sticking in the down position or your needle isn't seating properly. I think these are the only reasons you would have too much fuel flowing out.

IMO, there is no reason to put Stabil in fresh gas.

Also, have you made sure that you are getting a spark?

Thanks, I can check the float. I have a replacement I could pop in there. I put stabil in there out of habit and it sits for a couple weeks, sometimes longer in between uses in the winter. I know I have spark, checked it visually.
