Title: Full choke and slugs
Post by: giddyhitch on February 26, 2009, 09:35:41 AM
Might be a dumn question, but can you shoot slugs out of a full choke 12 gauge?

I would have to say you would be safer to shoot a slug out of an improved or modified cylinder if you have those chokes and you shotgun is not a fixed full choke.  The reason being is that the full choke is used to compact lead shot more so than the other two chokes stated, allowing a tighter pattern of shot.  When using slugs, there is no reason to compact the projectile, as the slug is already a compresses mass of lead.  So if you can, I would say try to use an improved or modified cylinder (if possible) to allow more space for the slug to pass through.

i wouldn't shoot slugs out of any shotgun barrel with changeable chokes, and definitely not out of a fixed full choke barrel.

Why not with the screw in chokes? Remington even sells a choke tube specifically for shooting slugs:

Quote
RIFLED REM™ CHOKE TUBES
• Adds rifling to smooth bore barrels equipped for Rem™ Chokes
• Adds rotational stability to Foster-type and sabot slugs as they exit the
  muzzle
• Improves accuracy and shot placement
• Available in 12-gauge only

I think a choke tube in Improved Cylinder would be fine as well, but I guess it would be best to check with Remington or read the owner's manual to be sure.

I've shot lots of slugs out of fixed full choke shotguns, no problems.  Some are more accurate than others.

No worries shooting slugs out of a full,  I would not use an extra full or superfull.  A buddy has put maubye 100 rnds. through his 870 with a full and has never once had a problem.  Are you looking to big game hunt with it?

It depends on what you kind you shoot. Are you planning on hunting big game with it?

I have never shot them out of a full choke, but they work fine in my modified choked 870.

Just thought I would bust some yotes with it if I can

I would use buckshot for yotes.

I use BB's and they work good, out to about 40 yards. #4 buckshot is another good choice, and if you don't mind spending a little more money, the "Dead Coyote" loads with size "T" shot are supposed to work good at extended ranges.

Slugs work great too,  i have a picture under my profile pics of  dog I dumped with a slug out of my hastings rifled barrel.  We can hold 4'' groups at 150 yards with the Federal rounds,  I did see Remington has a new slug out and I will for sure give them a try!

I would think that would take out a yote at 60+ yards? Just aim a little high at long range.

00 Buck would throw a pretty sparse pattern for shooting coyotes. The only way to really know the effective range is to take them out and pattern them on a large sheet of paper. I'd be betting that your 00 Buck loads will have too many holes in the pattern to be reliable past 40 yards. Sure a single pellet to the head, or through the lungs might put one down out to 100 yards, but you'll be wounding more that will end up suffering a slow and painful death, than you'll be killing. You'll get more range out of the others I already mentioned than you will with 00 Buck.

I just refinished my Sportsman 48 will I need to dull it down for the yotes?

I just bought #5 shot is it to small? :dunno:
Title: Re: Full choke and slugs
Post by: bobcat on February 26, 2009, 06:01:10 PM
Well yeah, but it depends. I think #5's would be good on a coyote to about 30 yards, maybe 35. But there are definitely better choices.

Ok I like your shot box so I'll see if I can get some $35 I bet

I killed my first deer with my Benelli Nova with the imroved cylinder choke in.  It worked just fine.
