Nice buck Jimmy

Sorry that the picture quality is not that great; my pictures do not really give this guy justice. He has a ton of mass. Absolutely one of the best bucks I have ever harvested and an amazing afternoon spent in a treestand. Hunted hard all weekend; passed on some smaller bucks in the hopes that this guy or another one of the bigger bucks I had on camera would show up. Came in with 10 minutes of shooting light left; cutting it really close! Angling towards me, five-yards away. Arrow went in just above his shoulder, took out both his lungs, and severed his aorta from the top of his heart. He died 60 yards away within a minute. A little hot getting into the stand (94 degrees), but it was worth the sweat. I wish everyone luck with their pursuits this season.

Congrats, that's a dandy Gun-dog!

Got my first deer with a bow on Saturday. Day started out not so great. Hadn't had a chance to get out scouting. So went to spot I went to last year but roads were closed to vehicle traffic so couldn't get to the area I wanted to. Hiked in some and hunted in the morning. Then headed to the capitol forest. Spotted this one in a clear cut while looking around. Got to about 25 yards before she stood up and stood broadside. Nerves must have kicked in shot high, but hit it in the spine, and she dropped there.

New to Washington! Moved from east coast, grew up whitetail hunting. These blacktail are hard to find. I have harvested 3- 8 points( whitetail). Wanting the elusive blacktail! I hunt blue mountain and wickersham. I have bought Weyerhaeuser rec pass the past two years. All I see are elk and a few doe. Any pointers or tips from the area? I am a rifle hunter but may start bow next year to extend my hunting season.
Thanks for having me here, your state is beautiful!
-
One note if getting a bow. Unless you draw the multi season tag if you choose to bow hunt you cannot hunt during muzzleloader or modern firearm seasons.

Hey Natedog. Glad you're enjoying yourself here in WA. I'd recommend you start a new thread with your questions. This thread is for the successful hunters to show their trophies. >:( >:( We less fortunate hunters can all join in on that thread and complain, or perhaps give you a couple tips.

Every year I only have a couple days to hunt so I go for the first legal deer I can, be it doe (where legal) or buck. I had other priorities opening weekend so I couldn't make it out until Monday. Walked all day 1, saw 60+ deer but none were legal. A little discouraging but I talked to some guys who had seen some bucks so I was hopeful for Day 2. Day 2 started out seeing what looked to be a legal buck feeding with 11 does. I glassed them for a few minutes but was not close enough to count points (probably should invest in a spotter). I tried to move around and get in a good position. By them time I got in a good position I watched 9 deer feed past me. Once they all past I went to see if the buck bedded down with the other 2 does. No luck, so I went and caught up to the others to see if the buck was in front of them. I bumped 6 does then saw several deer bedded down toward the top of a steep ravine. I tried to work my way around and get above them. I did see a forkie so I tried to close the distance and check for a third point. I spooked the herd (wind or noise I suppose) and they all worked their way down the ravine. Did some more searching but the buck must have eluded me. I pressed on and saw several more deer here and there but none legal. I spot some deer bedded at the bottom of a ravine and sneak in to glass for bucks. No bucks, but I look up and see a lone deer working across the side of the ravine, I glass and he is wide enough and tall enough to probably be legal, but far enough away I cant make out points. I watch him bed down so I back out and work my way around to get on the opposite side of the ravine. I go down 1000 yards to cross the ravine and I see more deer. Concerned if I bump them they might spook the buck I wait and slowly make it across undetected. I work back up to where the buck is and come over the top of the ravine where I though he was, but it doesn't look right. I keep going further and I see the area that looks right. I glass and dont see anything but when I saw him bed I knew he was very well hid. The wind was blowing pretty good in a favorable direction. I get to within 20 yards and I can see antlers through the down hill side of a bush. I tried to see with my binos if I could count points but I couldnt see the antlers clear enough through the bush. I get to within 10 yards and still cant tell. I try to glass but worry he will spook while my binos are up. I try it anyways and still cant tell. I get in position thinking he could stand up at any time. After 5 minutes I get tired of waiting. I have been in a similar position before and have made noise to get the deer to stand up. It worked out well once but the other time it did not work out as well. Since it is about noon and I don't want to wait for hours I take the chance, get in position, and try whistling increasingly louder every time. The wind was fairly loud and it wasn't working. Next I try coughing....no luck. I had heard a fawn bleating earlier that day so I figure I would try that. After a couple times he stands up. As he takes a step I verify the third point and pull the trigger. He goes 15 yards and lays down.... now the work begins.
Hopefully the pic doesn't give away the location :). Also for any concerned it is Muzzle loader season so no orange is required and the tag is zip tied to the antler under my hand.
-
Got my first buck. Muzzy. Best part was hunting with another forum member. Extreme hospitality and he even threw in a fresh grouse or two! Plus syoungs, another forum member had donated the muzzleloader. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171004/091034edeb704638a6ab3a5f56c51d25.jpg)

Really happy with this buck, Im a long time duck hunter converted to big game 4 years ago. My coworker lewy has been my biggest mentor giving me advice on how to be more successful and in my opinion has shown me the "right" way to hunt. This buck is my 3rd deer in 4 years, and my goal has been to shoot a bigger more mature deer than the year before. First deer was a doe with bow, second was a spike with rifle, and now this one. Pack out solo was grueling and I should have deboned the quarters but I didnt like a moron and my body paid lol.

Son's first muley. I'm so sore today from packing!

My 2017 4x3 mulie buck. Spotted 1200 yards away, stocked it to 100 yards and shot at 125. 23rd Deer-20th buck.
-
Got my first deer on opening morning. Owe it all to my good buddy who helped me out alot. I was raised by bird hunters who occasionally got a deer but never was the main quarry.
I'm so hooked on these, took me 5 years to get my first buck !
Never give up !

Congrats!

Nice one Uplandbum. You and your dad worked your tails off for that nice buck. Congratulations!

Spotted this guys antler tips bedded down in some tall crp grass sunday about 1030. Hour and a half belly crawl/schuffle later and was lucky enough to plant one right behind his ear. Feeling pretty lucky, these savy whitetails bust me way more often than not. in English does that mean no balls?

I want to publicly thank John Campbell with the Seattle Safari club and Larry Lawson from Colville for making the youth hunt a possibility. They make the hunt all about the kids and work their butts off to get shot opportunities for every one of them. It was a great day and my son will remember it for the rest of his life. He's already planning out next year's hunts, so thank you again John and Larry. You guys are awesome.
-
I second that, my son and I had a fantastic time hunting this past weekend. First time for my son to deer hunt and harvest his first deer. Great operation, they skinned and gutted the deer and put us on many great deer.

Cabelas game cart behind the bike. I can peddle a deer on the flat but have to push on any uphill stretches and believe me you find a lot of uphill places you thought were flat before you put the deer on.

I especially enjoy seeing the success of the kids, young hunters. My daughter, now 14 yrs, has been my hunting buddy since she was about 6 yrs old. She has taken 2 bucks, but decided this year that she's not into hunting the big game anymore. :(
She is into photography, so we'll just change our focus.
Enjoy those hunts with your kids!

Wifeys opening weekend Muzzy Buck. We backpacked in 4 miles and set up camp Friday night. We put 13 miles on the boots Saturday AM and ran out of water at noon. We went back to camp to filter water and the cattle in the area had trashed the ponds and they were pretty nasty so we hiked out around 7pm. She shot this buck 75 yards off the road the next morning.

It just seems so easy when You have only hunted with a bow. :chuckle:
All You have to do is see a legal animal and, boom! :IBCOOL:

My Stepson Got His First Deer Today:
I first came into my son's life 7 years ago when he was 7 years old. As I slowly gained his respect it was a gradual and careful process toward teaching him work ethic and other values important to me. Since the beginning I have always offered for him to hunt with me, but I didn't sugar coat it... I explained that sometimes it is miserable, sometimes it is a lot of work, etc. He is more of a "video gamer type", and other than going on a couple of hunts with me has always respectfully declined.
When I asked him if he wanted to hunt this year he said yes! I was excited to say the least. I had a good spot picked out where I was consistently seeing numerous small bucks. We set up camp the day before opener and I was much more excited than him. Opening morning we were approaching the location where I had imagined him shooting his first deer and... BOOM... a shot from above us. Side Note: the shot was a 50ish year old man who shot a small spike instead of letting his son shoot it instead. The next four days we saw only two does!
We returned home defeated and worked hard at finding him a buck every chance we had. We even hunted on the family farm when I was feeling a bit desperate. After numerous days of hunting and seeing nothing we decided to try a completely new location this morning. I was getting very anxious because I really wanted him to have a good experience. I kept thinking about how if he didn't have some kind of action that he would decline next year to spend more time on the games.
At 9am this morning we started through our second clearcut of the morning. We walked slowly while glassing regularly. Then it happened: I said, there is a buck. He didn't believe me at first. It took a while for him to find it and it was on the edge of thick reprod. I began to get the fever as I thought it was going to get away without him even seeing it. Finally he found it and placed a perfect shot at 175 yards. The buck didn't go more than 20 feet.
I couldn't be more proud:
On Thursday we had Parent-Teacher conferences. He had straight A's and each of his 6 teachers took the time to explain how impressed they were with his level of respect, intellect, dedication, and his wonderful personality. I was a very proud person to say the least.... but now... WOW I am so proud of him. What a great day!
Lesson Learned: oh wait... I learned this lesson many times over again... I need to get in shape before hunting season!
Added Bonus: He killed his first buck with a SBR... I should send the picture to Hillary and all her friends.
-

My 11 year old son is holding the deer.
After spending 10 days in the saddle or hiking into remote basins this was a nice way to spend "a day off".
Unfortunately the deer didn't give us time to get my son set up on the buck.
Regardless he was in my back pocket and we got to enjoy the experience together.
Later in the hunt we found him a beautiful tall and heavy 4 point, in the timber, at about 125 yards broadside. The buck couldn't make us out. Eventually I got my coat off and made the "perfect" rest for his 243. He's an excellent shot, out shoots most men, and I reminded him to slowly squeeze the trigger. At the shot he drilled it and it went flying...................
The limb 20 feet in front of his gun that is!!!
Mr. Buck left in a hurry.
I'm still not sure how the gun settled that low into my wad of coat and shirts but it had.
He chose to pass on smaller bucks and hold out for another nice buck that never came.
Good luck to all the rest of the season!!!

Little Pathfinder with his 2017 wt doe. Not much story here. Hunted muley bucks for a week and a half with no luck, last day he filled his tag in the last 20 minutes of legal light. One shot at 120 yards, dropped her in her tracks. I thought he might be disappointed shooting a doe after last year's double droptine 4x4+ muley, but he wasn't. In fact, he was tickled pink to not eat tag soup.

This deer’s story dates back to 2007, when I first saw what I believe to be his dad. I had an opportunity to take his dad back then, but chose not to because he was with 8-10 does and I wanted him to pass on his genetics. I had also been solo hunting and didn’t want to end my trip before I got to hunt with my dad, which had been a tradition we started when I was 5 years old. I passed on him again in 2008 for the same reason and just couldn’t connect in 2009. Then one of his offspring appeared in 2011. Again, with 8-10 doe in tow and on a solo hunt/scouting I passed. 2012, while on a hunt with my dad I spotted him on a ridge, but just couldn’t get a shot off before he disappeared. That was my last year hunting with my dad as he passed away that winter. 2013, while on a solo hunt, I got the biggest buck of my life and on a cold November day, I could feel the warmth of my dad’s embrace and knew that was our final hunt together. Fast forward to 2017. My 7 year old daughter has been bugging me for months. “When are we going hunting? When are we going hunting?” She was excited beyond belief. So I decided to set up a double stand on the same ridge my dad and I last hunted in 2012. I hadn’t hunted it since, but had a feeling it would be a good spot. Our deer season finally arrived, and my daughter and my hunting tradition had started. It was our first morning and we got to the stand early. An hour had passed and no sign of deer. I gave a few blind calls, but nothing responds. A half hour passes and I can hear my daughter’s tummy growl. I ask if she is doing ok and she asks when we can go back for breakfast and why there aren’t any deer. I tell her we can go back in just a little while and give out a few more blind calls. Nothing responds and 15 minutes later I can see my daughter is starting to shiver. I tell her I am going to try one last call sequence and then we can go back. I went through a full sequence of grunts and doe bleats. “RRRRrrr”. A faint response back in the distance. “You hear that, Kenley? That was a buck” “I heard it dad.” Now she has perked up. I did another full call sequence. “RRRrrr RRRrrr RRRrrr” another response back. “Dad, he’s getting closer.” I gave a few more grunts and another doe bleat. No, this buck has taken it hook, line, and sinker. He is grunting every half second and charging in. I stopped all calls as not to give away our location. We see him for the first time, passing through the young firs. Ears pinned back and pissed a rival buck has moved in on his doe. He is just about to step into my shooting lane, when he stops in the thick stuff. A few minutes pass and I give one more bleat. He steps out and I don’t need optics to tell that he’s a shooter. He turns and starts walking towards us. I raise my rifle and wait for him to turn broadside. Coming in head down, I can see his rack through the scope and can’t help to notice he is a good buck. I also see that if a place my shot just in front of his shoulders, I will take out his spinal column and heart at the same time. He picks his head back up and the next time he puts it down, “boom”. Clean, ethical shot and he is out before he hits the ground. My daughter says “Oh, I’m kind of sad for him, but happy to because now we have meat for the freezer.” I told her, “That’s exactly how you should feel. I feel sad every time I take an animal, but am thankful for the meat we have been blessed with.” And the Lord has blessed us this year. The same ridge my dad and my tradition ended on, my daughter and I forged our new tradition. My little huntress already can’t wait for next deer season.

Here’s the other photo I meant to attach.

Thank you. Yeah, that was always the best part about hunting with my dad. Just the good quality time together in the outdoors. I’m glad I get to start that with my kids now.

Gongrats great buck and great write up what do you think the age of this buck looks like a old timer
-
He is definitely old. His teeth are almost completely gone. I would like to know his age myself.
-
Here’s a couple game cam pics from last year. He may be on the down hill side.

Late season buck. First blacktail for me! Watched him for about 10 seconds at 7:55 on Saturday morning as he stepped into the clearing and then slipped back into the woods. He came out of the exact same spot from the timber into the clearing at 7:50 Sunday morning. That was it for him. Small and beautiful, antlers, but big body. Got 72 lbs of meat off of this guy. I've been tremendously blessed this year, harvesting my first bear and my first blacktail deer!
-
Right on O.! Nice BT

Shot this little guy this morning. Not very big but he's meat for the freezer. First thing I've ever killed with a muzzleloader.

.243 win, 40 yards, First Buck, Pennsylvania
-
That's great! Hunting in the hardwoods of PA is about the only thing I miss from back East. I got my first and quite a few more after that in up state PA. My first was a one horned fork horn as well, although I was a bit older!
-
Thanks Dave! I really enjoy hunting with my family in PA. Nothing else like it!!
-
Did that buck already shed his other antler?
-
Did that buck already shed his other antler?
I don't think so...appeared broken, and looked like it was healed up. The antler he had was still firmly attached. I have seen bucks back there this time of year that had freshly dropped antlers. And, there is always stories of hunters that go to drag out their buck and the antler pops of...
-
filled my multi season tag early yesterday morning, made a bad shot and after a 3 hour blood trail we finally caught up to him and were able to finish him off, not how I envisioned my first archery deer, but was super happy when it was over
-
Great persistence! Glad you got him and congrats on your first archery harvest!
-
Cool family pic! Great deer
-
My son took hunters ed earlier in the year and was able to harvest this buck on the last weekend of general season.

I'd venture to guess that is a Palouse River buck...looks familiar. Dandy!
-
No I had to cross the river to get to him . I always carry my waders in the truck when I'm hunting . And he is not a Palouse buck .
-
Me and my sons Montana whitetail we usually hunt mulled but they were down in our are so we shifted to whitey

Thank you c-money. It was bittersweet. My first mule deer, 300yards on my rf and he dropped in place however right down the cliff and tumbled to the bottom of the canyon. Earned that buck trough and through.
