Let me start by saying I've come to really like and rely on my onxmap app, that is until this last update. I am in no way a technological genius but I can get by, it all started with an update reminder on my iPhone. I was hesitant to update being so close to opening day but I wanted to use the new features so I went ahead and updated. I have to say the new features are great, couldn't be happier in that aspect. With the update you actually lose all your offline maps you've already saved which I didn't realize till after I updated. I lost a few lines and shapes and markings that I have done in the field as well. My real issue came when I started to try and save my maps again for offline use, I can no longer save maps for offline use. I follow the required steps and nothing happens, I then close my app and re open and under my off line/ off grid map it says zero kb of zero kb. I have reached out to onX and there response was basically they are aware of the issue and are working on it and to be on the lookout for an update. In my mind I'm FREAKING out, I have my gps and onx chip but invested a lot of time on my app. Cutting it way too close to season for the wait and see answer. I've had similar issues with it until this morning. Now it seems to be working properly for me. :dunno:
-
I'm not a fan of the new update as well...
-
I am ecstatic with the update. I was able to save offline maps as of this morning. My IPhone had iOS update last so maybe that is the difference... :dunno:
Hope you get resolution, it really is an awesome update!
-
I also love the new update. Much faster and easier to save offline maps. My saved points and tracks came through the update just fine.
-
It's quite buggy. Their software testing lacks, seriously. I wouldn't count on it yet. The dedicated GPS chip is more reliable.
-
I spent a day creating a trail into a tricky area. Two days later the app is updated and my trail and waypoints are all gone. Looks like I'm going to be putting boots to the ground again just to get my trail right. It would be wise to head out and test the features of the new update before the real deal.
-
So I decided I didn't want to "wait for an update". I deleted my app and re loaded. I am now able save offline maps. Give it a shot if you're having issues. Figured it wasn't working anyway what more could I lose.

Some good feedback on onX issues in this thread: https://onyourownadventures.com/hunttalk/showthread.php?277109-Ask-your-onX-questions-here!/page4

I'm not liking it as well as before. There seems to be a few things you can't do anymore

What issues are you having that you previously were able to accomplish?
-
I used to be able to search and go straight to a given gmu,now seems i have to thumb around my phone and locate manually.maybe i will just put markers on the gmu's that i reg. hunt.
-
also my phone used to remember my login for me now it seems that feature is gone as well. :dunno:

:yeah:
Don't get me wrong, I use and LOVE the app and web browser version. They're a great group and a huge benefit to the hunting community. Buuuutttttt they still have some stuff to learn on making robust software.
Totally worth the headache for me though. The update is a big step in the right direction even if the delivery wasn't flawless.
-
Agreed, awesome product and horrible update. I bet there are a bunch of guys with early tags sweating it out right now.

Well, I spoke too soon. My onxmaps has failed me once again, I made the mistake of not downloading all my maps when my app finally worked properly for a couple days. I am now having the same exact issues as before. To make matters worse I made the gutsy choice to delete the app and re load as it worked previously. NOPE!! I actually made it worse due to me choosing to delete the few larger scale maps I saved. So now I have NOTHING and one of my last scouting trips before season kicks off is tomorrow. I have my gps with the chip but now I have to find the time tonight to make all my plans match up from google earth to my gps. Still beats the map days though.

Seems to be downloading ok now although you still can't turn layers on or off but at least I will know where I am. I'm madly dashing to get my unit downloaded for maybe the 5th time.
-
Definitely frustrating. New features are nice if you can use them.

I updated also, does everybody else get to choose five different states to look at?
-
Ya. If I hunted out of state it would be beneficial. At this point I'm thinking of deleting, only a few weeks before season and a few days before bear on the wet side and I can't use my app.

Anyone having any luck with there onxmaps app? I've had nothing but issue after issue. This last Saturday morning I checked my app at 4am before I left my house, by some miracle I could now save maps. I thought oh sweet Jesus I better save my maps now while I actually can. Postponed leaving for one of my last scouting trips before season to save all my maps again, quite a few believe it or not as I hunt both sides of WA now. So this delays me prob 2hrs realistically, I check my offline mode and it's working fine time to get outa town. I start to lose service so I put my phone in airplane mode and open my app. Now in offline mode it crashes the second I try to zoom in to actually see anything. Complete frustration and irritation, I put it off as I don't want anything to negatively affect my time in the woods, I get out my Garmin with onx chip, I scout the rest of the day. I reach out to onxmaps yet again to let these issues be known, I got a sorry for your frustrations and to wait for the update. Great!!! Finally got a notice for an update........ FIXED NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me. Also found out that I have to send my regional chip in because they discontinued them and I can't update the chip. I will be waiting till after my hunting seasons. Good luck to all and sorry for the rant.

@onXmaps
They may see this...
-
I've had correspondence with them a few times and there responses are we are aware of these issues and are working on them. Look for an update. Update fixed nothing. I bought the chip, pay for the app. Guess I expected too much. Gotta get your ducks in a row before releasing to the public. Now a ton of hunters will be affected negatively if they aren't able to figure out a backup plan. I know and understand things don't always go as planned and unforeseen things can be detrimental to product releases. Hope they do get things figured out because it's a great product IF it functions.

Sorry to hear man. Mine has been working fine , I did learn that in order to completely save a map I have to keep my phone from going into sleep mode. Not sure if that is a thing or not?
Hope you get it sorted....
-
I'm glad it works for you guys seriously cause it's great when it works

Don't zoom, don't try to use layers, don't try to save offline maps. In other words unless you are hunting in Starbucks you are in trouble. I was the biggest fan but was burned bad.
I am very glad I always take and use a paper map.

I don't blame you. Definitely was a reminder to have backups and not become reliable on technology. I'm not a big tech guy. This app is the closest thing to social media I'll ever have. Don't lose touch with real life people.

My dedicated GPS with onboard maps has never failed me. Unfortunately onX is moving away from that as quickly as they can towards web based devices like cellular phones.
-
I think sadly a lot of things are headed that direction.

I just loaded it on my new android phone a few days ago & haven't had any trouble. That being said, if they get away from the chip that I can use in my computer & gps, I'll stop using it. I hate having to take my gloves off in the field to use a phone.
-
I don't show land ownership on my PC anymore. Asking me to buy it when I already have it. >:(
-
I tested the app out on a road trip to Wyoming last week. I don't like it for several reasons. When there is no cellular service, the "off grid" maps display private parcel landowner information but don't highlight public land, nor the HMAs or walk-in areas. Also, as you move your present location moves also to the edge of the map before recentering. That makes it tough to see what's just ahead.
There does not appear to be any way to set the map orientation as "track up" which again makes it difficult to view what you are approaching.
The chip is superior for my purposes.

The chip and downloaded map should work the same, you need to mess with it for a while to get it figured out. Make sure you have the layers you want checked when you download them and they should be there offline. When I download, I check most of the layers and it looks like a big mess. Then, after you download it you can uncheck a bunch and get it where you want.
Having the private and BMA (MT) stuff on there is hugely valuable to me. I don't remember if they have the WY equivalents or not, but you can usually figure it out with just the private boundaries.
