I talked 2 a buddy today and he siad its getting nuts, he lives in wen. and he said that the last 2 weeks all he has heard about is shed huntin, in the bar at the ball field,at the sporting goods store. even from the high school kids. Its a groing obsession that will end soon i think. I am debating on spending the gass money to get to some of my spot cause i know there will either be a rig there already or boot tracks every were, very discouraging, i know everyone should get to enjoy it but the bad thing is every one outnumbers the amount of acres we have. I guess its time for a massive multiple gmu closure, I never thought it would ever get this popular partly my fault for putting al the pics on the internet, I am my own worst enemy.
but anyways i am done bitchen and good luck to all and i hope u all find the boot tracks like i am and spend lots of money on gas to go for a good hike.

Dont get too down, it is depressing seeing bootracks in your spots, its happened to everyone who fishes, hunts, or gathers. I just found this site a couple weeks back and had to join. You are one of the best contributors of great pics on this board from what I have seen in my brief time here. I know me and my son enjoy them immensely. He checks everyday now to see the "new ATL's".
Guys who are hardcore and put in the bootleather and sweat will always do well in whatever they do, you are no different. Thanks for sharing your pics and knowledge.

duckfvr.... :'(..........just kiddin man. Your probably right though, you have contributed to the popularity of shed hunting. 509er and I would probably never have gotten into it had it not been for you. After finding my first brown set a couple years ago it really got me hooked. With it being so popular now, when you find a decent one you might as well consider it like finding a gold nugget. In my opinion it's getting bad enough now where it isn't worth the gas money.

Its going to have to be kinda like wolf hunting SSS (shoot shovel and shut up). Find em and dont tell anyone till after season. The more we show em off the more more it gets others all fired up( I have fallen victim as well). Its realy too bad what it has come too. :dunno:

I agree with all, it a shame but a reality. I have a great view of one of the popular mountains outside of WEN and can see 4-8 rigs coming off every night, this has been happening for weeks. Makes you not even waste your time and money.

Here is a question. Why is shed hunting so popular? I will pick up a shed if I find one, but it seems like some people like shed hunting more than actual hunting. What do you do with them once you find them? Unless they are big I give mine to my dad to make pens and other crafts.
Just curious and needing enlightened.

There are many factors for many different people on why it is becoming popular. One thing I do not like is people that go out too early and their sole purpose is to sell them. Personally, I just like to get out and get some fresh air and exercise and if I'm lucky enough to stumble on a shed then it makes my trip more enjoyable, then I throw it in my pile in the garage. I think if more people would just call it hiking or going for a walk and not "I'm going shed hunting" there wouldn't be so many people out specifically looking for them. i just think the term "Shed hunting" has taken on a life of it's own. Next you know you have your next door neighbor who probably doesn't even hunt saying , "yeah I wanna go shed hunting too". Like duckfvr said the earlier people who used to shed hunt would keep it to them selves and toss their finds in a cubby hole somewhere. Now you have every tom dick and harry posting pictures of them all over the internet which is naturally going to intrigue others. Not that it is a bad thing most just love to see the cool ATL pics, but the internet is defiantly a huge culprit.

I agree duck. Been spending more time doing other things lately like taking the girls fishing or photographing birds instead.

The areas I like to hit are not too popular, the roads heading in have snow in the canyons until June, and I have never seen boot prints or snowmobiles go in for sheds there. Maybe I am lucky having a haunt like this to go to. Still, I did not go last year. I may not go this year, except that I need the exercise and it may hold two years worth now...

Maybe we will hit a peak when there are so many guys that nobody is finding *censored* anymore, lots of people will quit, and only the most diehard will be left. But I seriously doubt that. If it didn't extend my time outside (and provide good info about the deer) I would quit.

all it takes is one good pic to light the fire. I've been beaten and discouraged and I'll see one picture and it just fires me up and makes me get intot he rig for another round.

It is hard to resist posting pictures of sheds but you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm still trying to find my first shed. :rolleyes:

Just to start out, i am not trying point fingers or ruffle any feathers, but what is this sense of entitlement people feel they have. I think shed hunting is a very enjoyable and rewarding form of recreation. I dont know what the big deal is if other people go out looking for them, after all it is public land. At last check, there are no rules regulating shed hunting with the exeptions of winter range closures, and removal of antlers attached to the skull. I say, as long as people are being responsible, by obeying property laws, and not pushing wildlife around, who gives. I know if i ever crest a ridge and see deer/ elk over the hill, i back out of the area. But if you are putting down a sport that you so actively and passionately persue, because others are out there too is no different than saying you arent going to go to a watch a football game because there are already too many people watching it, or saying im not going to work, because there are already too many people with a job.....and to that i say....REALLY, come on. If the game department chooses to regulat shed huntin by enacting a season/ limits/ of liscense, i will gladly pay, because just as i enjoy hunting, and fishing, and other outdoor activities, i also am fully aware that it is a prividege, not an entitlement.

Agree 100%...BUT...there a many GREEDY people out there doing the opposite of what you, me, and most ethical people do. And that is the problem. Bad apples taint every aspect of life, including something as obscure as shed hunting.
