Title: White River Elk Tag
Post by: dewandgin on August 21, 2017, 09:24:01 PM
Okay so my two brothers, my dad and myself put in for this hunt as it was one that all 4 of us could go together and put in for. We drew it and I have been up in the hunt 4 times now. Once with dad and oldest brother and the other three times with my grandson. We have hiked our butts off and have seen elk but are still looking for that a good starting point. We are not all looking for wall hangers but will put in the work to get our elk. With that said any and all suggestions, hints or out right honey holes :chuckle:. I know about the other hunting that goes on in the unit so that is what it is. Thanks to any and all and good luck this season. BTW this is a modern tag if it matters. Dad is 75 and only has use of one arm so no bows for him.

if you've seen elk it seems your way ahead of the curve. They do have a herd mentality.  :twocents:

You're looking in the right places. I didn't see a ton of elk in there last year either but they are there.

Yes have had to chain all four to get out, if the snow flies a snowmobile is the way to go, but it is very rugged country.

Thanks for all the help guys and the PM's. I truly appreciate it. Couple of questions for everyone 1. is the Hancock pass worth the money? 2. Where would be the best place to park a coach up there for 2 weeks or so that it wouldn't be messed with much. I know there is always a chance but general area.

Again thanks for all the help so far and good luck hunting to all.

If your Dad is 75, Id suggest the Hancock pass to hunt north of Mt.RNP & west of Hwy 410.

Need a little help if possible. All the place we scouted this summer now have at least 18"+ of snow. I have been able to get to one of them but none of the others. We have the Hancock passes and have been hunting it but seeing a lot of cows and no bulls. Have been up FS RD 72 but pushing over a ft of snow with the bumper at the top. Everything road around  crystal I can find is closed.  Thanks again

The fires screwed you, coral pass rd will probably never open again from what I heard only way In is from the 7224.orv7220. But if you asre pushing snow that could be difficult to get to. Try holler pass of the 74 rd. Pass the Hancock stuff off that rd. Til you get close to the top. If you can hike to lost lake there I almost assure you will find a bull. Also if you have a snowmobile go over holler to the west fork. This snow is guaranteed to push the park bulls thru that drainage. Good luck

Haller Pass.  Huckleberry Ridge area.  I’ve seen a lot of elk in there.  Glass the heck out off that basin/drainage

Why will the Coral Pass road potentially not open again? Was some real neat country up there and where I first learned to hunt.

Enough talk about corral pass, it no longer exist.  Damn internet, took me years to find all these good spots by boots, and hard work.    Ok, rant over!   The road to corral is really messed up by the fire, and the forest service has been wanting to close that road for years.  Try the lower area around buck creek air strip, if you do some exploring in that area, you’ll find Bulls. Also that huckleberry ridge area!

 :yeah:

I agree with Ross. I had the tag a few years ago.  The Westfork always has elk, and you don't need a pass.

Another good tip. That is a natural migratory route for the elk.  With heavy snow they will be there.

Thanks for all the help guys. The 74 and the 75 Rd were closed and we went to the 73rd and tried to fight our way over to the 74 Rd but after 4 hrs of digging snow and dealing with everyone up there. We gave up. We hunted hard  for 11 days and I only saw two bulls and got to shoot one of them. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171116/f54639f25ac9c13632d5d0249370b565.jpg)
