Title: Entiat Late Deer Tag
Post by: Chaser on August 22, 2017, 09:14:28 AM: After 12 years my dad and I drew 2 of the highly coveted late deer tags for Entiat. Can't wait to get out and hopefully find that monster buck. We've hunted Entiat in previous years and have done some scouting. The only hangup on this trip is that I have a new job and only have a few days I can take off. Does anyone have a suggestion on whether or not to focus our time at the beginning of November or towards the last weekend? I know we can't predict Mother Natures weather but is waiting later in the month going to keep us out of the hills due to snow? I read all these stories that you will see shooters all season it's just laying off the trigger for the one you are looking for. My dad isn't able to do much walking so we're looking for an area that he would have some success and be able to drive to. You wait 12 years and want to be prepared.

Post by: DOUBLELUNG on August 22, 2017, 10:09:37 AM: If I were in that situation, I would choose the last days of the season if possible; and if not, after 11/11. It is highly unlikely you will be snowed out, and if that is the case you will find bucks within a short walk of where you can drive.

We saw a buck after shooting hours during Modern last year and he wants to go back during Archery in Sept. I don't know if archery in Teanaway is any good in Sept or where to even start. We hunted a few days out of 29 Pines CG last year but don't know the area very well.

I had that tag last year shot a nice 4pt day one that I went out. What I did was take about three days during modern firearm and drove around to get the know the area and look for Does, when I found a canyon with 20 plus Does in it I returned the second week of the late season knowing that there would be bucks there chasing them. :twocents:

Post by: muleracks on August 22, 2017, 03:19:31 PM: The Entiat is pretty open with public land access on decent roads so you can probably do well by just road hunting and glassing. If it is warm with little snow hunt the high elevations on the west end of the unit but there will be good bucks with does every where. Make this an experience that you and our Dad will remember fondly for ever.

When my points split years ago I've been applying every year for both and nada and now I get drawn for both. Just disappointing that I'm back at zero for both tags.

It happens and it has cleaned a few guys out of there points.

The one on the left netted 157" the one on the right went 147". The one on the right is not from Entiat.

I got a call that my bear skull is ready so going over to Republic Labor Day weekend to get it. My son will take his bow and we'll hit the hills and see if we can find something. Following weekend will spend a few days with my son in Teanaway. Love this time of the year!

Post by: Magnum_Willys on October 28, 2017, 11:27:55 PM: I drove all the roads to get a feel for the area. Not much to see in early October. I can see upper roads could be hairy when snow and icy. Long shot possibilities. Hopefully all the dire predictions still allow a couple bucks to chase.

Post by: Chaser on November 04, 2017, 11:57:37 PM: Spent both general weekends scouting. Saw doe every day but not a lot of bucks, a few spikes is all. Most everyone was saying the same. Went up to cottonwood the day after the snow, same story, saw some does but no shooters. Saw a couple bucks in trucks over the two weekends but nothing like I’ve seen in years past. I really hope the deer show up for this tag. Any one hear how things are going now that some weather has moved in and we’re in November? See you up there willapawapiti

A local said to head up to Shady Pass area. 4pt looked to be a young 4pt. I’m sure there are more mature bucks around. We’ll go back to the same place in the morning and then check out Shady after a morning hunt.

FYI, Shady Pass is NOT in the Entiat unit, it's in the Slide Ridge unit. Good luck.

Shady Pass in NOT in the Entiat unit, it's in the Slide Ridge unit. Good luck.

Honestly, I'm glad to see so many hunters with these tags this year that aren't hung up on counting inches an complaining that they aren't seeing 180 bucks standing behind every tree, but instead are appreciating the time in the woods, seeing great animals and lots of them, and just having a great time. 100% agree. It is a beautiful unit and being able to see that many deer and bucks, even if small, is worth it to me.

We never saw the same buck twice. Great having almost no other traffic up there. Only saw 2 or three vehicles a day. Most of the lil goat trail roads we drove hadnt been driven in a week.

Post by: huntergreg on November 19, 2017, 11:32:01 PM: Was up there the last two days. Saw quite a few bucks mostly smaller ones. Last night we saw a nice 140 in 4x4. Today we saw 3 that were 140 to 150 in. There are a lot of smaller bucks chasing the does around. Only one big guy that was with some does the other two bigger ones were alone. We watched one nice wide heavy 3x3 sleep with his nose almost touching the ground for about 30 min. Hopefully more snow moves in and pushes them down. We had one huge 2x2 up in the fog standing 20 yards off the road and didn’t care that the three of us got out and watched him. Had one big one walking around with his eye guards full of bark he was tearing a tree up

We saw over 30 bucks opening day one of my buddies that have the tag missed opening morning on a good 4x5 we today was a little slower with all the fog but still manage to get in tang of a few decent bucks. Haven’t seen any Giant ones yet biggest was the one he missed probably around 140 I could hav *censored* a nice black tail buck two times now once yesterday and agin today if your buddies are in that white ford they watched my buddy sneak up within 50 yards to him while we had other bucks above and on another finger over from us. Our camp has two tags in there

Was foggy a few days and yesterday it started to snow. Most of the animals were already down low didn’t see to much up high at all

He wants to hunt Entiat deer after seeing all these great bucks. He will have to wait to get drawn, he didn’t like hearing how long it might take. Headed to Taneum this weekend for late archery and maybe get lucky.

When I saw the truck it was parked on hey 97, aren’t the big boys up higher than that?

Post by: huntergreg on December 01, 2017, 08:48:49 AM: We went up high and didn’t see much at all. We hunted down lower most of the time and were in lots of deer. Hopefully next year i can get that tag. I talked to one guy that had two points and got it. My buddy’s had 7 and One had 2 and got it in a group. I have 10 and nothing hahah we didn’t run into to many hunters at all down low. I think the early snow pushed a bunch down early. Went over into Swakane ind everyone we talked to didn’t see to much at all. Was pretty much like last year.
