Title: I have a nuisance possum problem.
Post by: biggfish on September 02, 2017, 03:18:30 AM
I've been trapping nuisance a animals in my yard fora few years now, went from a rat problem to raccoon, now possum. Getting them trapped is not the issue it's with dispatching them. If I can catch them on my rat traps try are small enough to take care of with my pellet gun. I live in a residential neighborhood so firearms are out and I've been seeing and caught one in the 15 pound range. Pellet gun was useless, so I gave up but they are trying to fight with my niece's little dog so back at it. Now I need some help/info on ways to dispatch. I don't want to make or buy a gas chamber, and I'm a little weary on driving out to safe place to shoot them with a firearm. I don't have a trapping license so I don't want to deal with the potential problems that may arise if I run into a warden. Any info would be appreciated.

Is it one of the newer 1200fps+ pellet guns that won't kill one? That would surprise me. I would hate to drown in a cage so I really don't recommend that. Just do the gas chamber with your exhaust. PVC pipe into a black trash bag. Easy!

It's a 600fps pistol anything more than about 700 and its attracts too much attention. I don't think more speed will make too much difference I was put rounds through the skull and out the lower jaw, it took 24 shots and wouldn't go down. I've considered injection but don't know what to use.

Ole aluminum baseball bat  :dunno:
Instead of head shots, try for the vitals/heart shot

My son uses his 700fps pellet gun in our yard and must agree, his new 1100fps is loud. Sounds like a .22  :yike:

I use a Gamo 177  caliber break barrel pellet gun and it kills raccoons
Shoot it right through the ears

Take em down to Evergreen State College in Olympia and drop them off. It is just what they need. Their enrollment is down and so are their donations. Let the left-wingers baseball bat them to death. Its a win-win situation.

1050 fps is generally where to load for to keep subsonic

Practically anything you do is going to be illegal. A pellet gun in a  no shooting zone is still going to be considered a firearm. so not legal. You are now moving wildlife which is illegal. Once you leave your property with a live animal you are libel to get a ticket if you run into LE. It doesn't matter if you have trappers License or not. I n this case you do not need a Trapping license. Still breaking the law if you relocate.
Drowning can be iffy. Two cases have come to my attention of people who were ticketed for animal cruelty over this. Neither case went to court. It is not specifically illegal but certain LE can interpret it that way. Same thing can be said for using exhaust gases.
I am trying to get the law changed so you have a legal option but for now it is either CO2 gas chamber, a blow to the head for dispatch or if you choose drowning I would not let anyone see you doing it and don't go talking about it.

Ive put a few down, and you are better off with a 22 over a pellet gun.  I have both, and the 22 is much more effective.  Privacy from neighbors is key!  Cage with bait, take to secluded part of yard, 22 to the head, and discard the carcass.

A friend had the same issue. Lives in the city so he got one of these. I'm not sure if he recovered his arrow after the possum looked like Steve Martin. Not sure if it's legal either.

Pellet guns aren’t firearms.  The laws vary but in my city they are legal for anyone 14 years or older to use.  An 1100fps pellet to the head will do in any possum.

9.38.040 Air guns.

A.    As used in this chapter, “air gun” means and includes the following: air gun, air pistol, air rifle, BB gun, and toy guns of any kind or nature when so designed, contrived, modified and used to propel, by compressed air or spring-loaded plunger, any pellet, dart, hardtipped arrow, bean, pea, BB, rock or other hard substance a distance of more than twenty-five feet with sufficient force to break windows or inflict injury upon persons or animals.
B.    Except as hereinafter provided, it is unlawful:
1.    For any person under fourteen years of age to carry or shoot any air gun within the city when not in the presence of his parent or other adult in loco parentis and under the direction and control of such adult;

Sounds like the real "Possum Problem" began's after you catch them.

I think the water barrel is going to be your cheapest, quietest option.

Sounds like shot placement.  If the pellets go through the skull and out, you just need to hit the brain.

I use Aguila Colibri .22 LR Subsonic Rimfire Ammunition at 450FPS, quieter than my 1200FPS air rifle.  :twocents:

Well make yourself a pigsticker ,ice pick on a stick u can get into the cage,or paracord though a small pipe that can be put into the cage , you get the idea, sticker on the vital a few times come back later all done, make something like this but smaller.

Can't speak for the legality of this, but "a guy I know" duct taped an old arrow to the end of a broom handle.  The arrow is skinny enough to get in the holes of the cage and long enough to reach the other side.  Not the most pleasant way of doing it, but it's a quick and humane death--especially if you use a broadhead.  If the broadhead doesn't fit through the cage, try removing a couple blades from it.

 :yeah:

I've used CB shorts and they are about as loud as a loud hand clap out of a rifle, still pretty loud out of a pistol though.

I had a possum once that was attacked by my wife's dog, heard the skull crunch, then I shot it in the head with a .22.  It was late, so I just tossed it on top of an old fridge on the porch.  In the morning, I went to dispose of it and it was gone.  :yike:  I found it down the deck wheezing away behind the wood pile.  They can be pretty tough little jerks.

I am now totally sold on the traps designed to drown in trap. No moving off property, silent, just need a un visible spot and a hose. I mostly deal with skunks.

Well there's one other way that may be better but will take a bit longer.Take trap put it in big black garbage bag and tie it tight make sure you have no holes ,should run out of air,but no way to tell how long ,size of animal, size of cage, size of bag,it might kick a few times but should go to sleep from co2 later than sooner.
