The Sapphire hawk scores again. Just got off the mountain. Big story to follow, but I'm bushed. Catch you guys in the morning. I haven't had time to stretch the tape, but should meet the 170 criteria. I got a few pics while scouting, but then rolled with a log off the mountain and crushed my camera. Don't fret, my head is harder than the camera. Saw some nice bucks. more to come.....
-
You are such a tease!
:( Sorry to hear about the camera!
-
You are havin' a hell of a time lately..lol
Can't wait to see the pics.
-
killin me here
-
Thats about the third time I've rolled off the mountain. Always a quick thrill. If you saw the country I am in, you'd understand. I joke about it, but I guess I am serious when i say I'd rather die out there than on some operating table.
He stretches 26 inches and is a solid 5x4 with a 5 inch extra point. Grosses 175-180. If I took the buzz saw to him before I put a picture on here, he would score better. ;)
Pictures coming soon of where I was and the hunt.

WOW!!! He's a Beauty!!! What county were you in? Congrats!!!
-
I am not surprised, great job, looks like it was another short and successful season for you.
-
Here's the story.....
I drove up at 3 am to the Methow. It took me 7 long hours to get to my camp after I left the truck. It was pretty gloomy, but o precip so far. I found a place where I thought it might be safe to camp, and fairly flat. You'll notice I stuck my tent next to a big log, hoping that f one of the snags I miscalculated did come down, it might not completely crush me. The last weeks blizzard brought down at least a hundred snags that I saw. Anyhow, I woke up to it snowing. Not really sticking at my camp but coming down. I climbed up a barren ridge to try to get where I was going to camp in a spike camp to get to a bowl I was after. No luck. It was just too dangerous with the snow already there 0-8 inches, and it snowing fresh. I saw one buck just below where I killed the one last year. He was a 150 class fellow. No other sign. Most of the deer had moved out of the rocks to about 5500-6000 feet. I swung back through camp, grabbed a candy bar and headed up the ridge near camp. I jumped another 150 class buck sending him down the mountain. I made my observations and headed back to camp. This is when I rolled downthe mountain. I shook myself off and about thirty minutes later BOOM!!!! What the.....across from me some *censored* poached 130 class buck. PISSES ME OFF. Why can't idiots play by the rules. Dressed in blue jeans, blue plaid shirt, and white T-shirt, he stashed the Buck under a tree and left. You're a lucky *censored* that I just broke my camera because I could have had it all on film. Hopefully he came back to claim it the next day. Just because you are on top of the world doesn't mean you arealone. >:(
I made it back to camp and the snow had finally quit. It started to clear jut before dark and was getting rather crisp. I woke and headed straight out from camp. It was just pushing shooting light when I worked my way under a gorgeous 180 plus buck and 6 does. He was rutting something fierce. They were feedingalong the mountain, and I tried to get in front of them, but they had the elevation and I just couldn't catch them. If the 06 would ave been in my hand, he would be dead. I got into a rough spot, or chute, and I lost them. i don't know if they ever spooked from me or just out distanced me. I got through the chute and approached the lip of a new draw or basin, and I heard a deer in front of me. I thought SWEET. They moved down. I cleared the lip and here was my buck with 4 does, and he was full in rut. There was no way I could move from my spot without being detected, so just waited until he got close. I shot when he was at 40-45 yards. A little far for what I like with the Trad bow, but it was the best I could do. Bullseye. He ran back my direction under me and across the chute towards camp. Thanks guy, I appreciate that. He went about 80 yards I guess. Then the work started, and not sure it ever ended. I logged alot of hard miles. i ran into a pair of guys I hope show up on here. They dumped a nice 3 point a couple thousand feet below me
-
This is where I got my water. I had to cmap about 200 feet in elevation below this. My camp last year was about half way in between. A big tree came down right where my tent layed last year. Very glad it didn't do it while I was there.
This year I packed my water filter. Last year I didn't.
-
way to go bone!!! Thanks for shareing
-
Dandy buck , and with a bow, traditional too! I need to start muley hunting again :(.
-
Great buck, great story and great pictures! You know how to get the job done! Congratulations.
-
Rutting?
-
Yes, the two big bucks were rutting(not just palying around, they were serious!). the two 150 bucks were not and didn't look like they had any thoughts about it. The three point the other gentleman had down the mountain had a swollen neck. That was one of the first questions they asked me because his neck was really swollen and they were caping him out. I hope he shows up on here. It was a Nice three point.
-
Hey Bone , do you hunt by yourself all the time, or is this just a secret hole you dont want your buddies to find out about.? :) Just curiouse because most good hunting I do is by myself.
-
I almost always hunt by myself. If I ever hunted with anyone other than my Dad, I just considered it a social thing, and threw the thought of success out the window. Not very many folks have the drive that I do and go tot he extremes that I do. I also think that success is cut in half when you add another person.
-
Thats how I feal too! Thats why during early archery elk , I try and get my wife a elk so I can hunt on my own the second week when the action is better .
-
Excellent story and buck, it's good to see hard work pay off. Do your hunts ever last more than 1-2 days? ;)
-
Awesome buck and a great job, way to go man!
-
Dang nice buck!! That must have been some nice stress release. That looks like a sweet little honey hole you got there. You've got to be the most driven guy have ever heard of, most would have quit the first time they coughed up blood. Congrats on the excellent hunt and good luck tomorrow on you scope.
-
Thats a sweet looking area.It reminds me of the old boulder unit......Why do you hunt with a bow during rifle thou??????
-
Awesome buck Great hunt even if you did take a fall .
"Why do you hunt with a bow during rifle thou?"
Because he can . I have done the same with Bow as well as Muzzleloader.
Slenk
-
I would rather bowhunt than rifle hunt. I like the challenge and thats what makes hunting fun for me. The way the state is set up though, I have to select what tag I want before I apply for late tags. The late tag that I am after is a late rifle tag therefore I have to select modern. I quit bowhnting a few years ago for that reason. Then I found out I could use my ow during the modern season with a modern tag. Since then I have killed 3 nice bucks with my bow, two for two with the Trad bow. Where I go, competition isn't too much of an issue. Its just you don't get to shoot across basins and into the rocks, you have to go after them. Makes for a VERY satisfying kill when successful.
-
Congrats on a tremendous buck Bone, good job!
-
Congrats on the Nice Buck and that is some awesome country you're in.
Now why did that guy poach the deer? Is this a special unit?
-
I like to say you lucky dog, but when it comes down to it, its not luck its your scouting, practice, dedication, and will that really pays off for you. Congrats on yet another beautiful high country buck. You should post some pics from last years buck also, Id like to see it again. There sure are so great genes up in the Okanogan, that buck would have been a pig in another year or two. I heard the lowlanders had a slow opener, my family took one so far, up above Black pine. The poacher I assume shot the buck the day before it opened? Was the deer gone the next day?
-
Fantastic report Doug :IBCOOL:
-
Is this a permit tag. What area can you hunt with bow in the rifle season. This bow season for 3 weeks is absurd.
-
If you have a modern firearm tag for general season you can hunt with a bow during the general modern firearm season. The reason is because you can use any legal weapon. You cannot hunt with a bow during the rifle season unless you have a modern firearm tag or a multi-season tag or other special permit as far as I am aware of.
-
Thanks everyone! Huntwa is %100 correct. No special tag, no special hunt for archery. It is my choice and legal right to use a bow duing the modern season IF I have a MODERN TAG. This means I am not hunting with a bow during the archery season. These are self imposed limitations. The special permit I was discussing above is the one everyones applying for for modern rifle late buck. That is a hunt I WANT to do, and can't if I hunt normal archery.
The guy poached the deer because he is a greedy ass, and shot it the day before the season starts, most likely because he didn't think anyone else was around. HE IS A LUCKY *censored*, I broke my camera. He is also lucky I didn't have my gun or I might have confronted him.
-
Luv the photos of the area. Real nice buck! Was about to ask about the poaching thing.... but just caught your last post.
-
Thanks for the info. I think that will affect the plans for next year. I would like to tailor my hunts around the rut and pre-rut and rut are the best. This would put me in that window. I will still get my chance in November though.
-
way to go bone...glad you scored on a beauty of a buck.
-
Thanks Jack...how was the SE corner?
-
real slow for us. i killed a 18-20" 3x3 on the last night on the way out to the truck. i couldn't resist. i covered every inch of all the land i can hunt and saw 5 bucks, none of which were even legal till i saw the one i killed. i was trapped in mule deer kindergarten.
check pm's
-
That's a nice keeper
-
Surprised to here they were rutting. My hunt starts in two weeks over there (eastside). Nov. 1-18. Nice buck. Congratulation's.
-
which tag did you draw Blacktail?
-
That makes sense......Got to do what you have to to get those sought after tags..................
-
Boneaddict. I drew a Manson A tag. Was planning on hunting the elk general down around St. Helens then catch the last half of the Manson A season. This thread's furrowed my brow a bit! Hate to miss elk camp 2 year's in a row but, on the other hand I'd like to give this permit some respect.
-
Boneaddict,
glad to see your success. It appears I was over the ridge from you...on the north shore of Lake Chelan. I saw some nice ones, and yup...the big ones are starting to rut. I drew the multi-season tag and hit it on Friday, last day of muzzleloader season. Then picked up my rifle on Sat. Anyway, I had some opportunities but didn't connect, mostly due to the fact that I really want to get a nice blacktail with my recurve (I don't have the kahunas to use it during the modern season...yet)
Not to highjack the thread, but hey blacktail 135, I will send you a PM with the details of what I saw and the conditions, but lets just say, you're gonna have a great hunt and don't sweat it too much, there just starting into the rut...the ladies aren't close yet.
Grade-Creek-Rd
-
Hello grade-creek-rd. Looking forward to the PM. Getting excited.
-
blacktail,
I just sent it to you...hope it goes through. Are you home in the afternoon, I'll call ya.
-
beautiful deer Bone.......you have the hair of the bear in ya :)
Fred
-
Awesome buck! Pass some of your luck this way if you got any left ;)
-
Bone,
Awesome buck man!! That is a trophy!
-
thanks guys.....hey Clark, I'm trying, what works a little better than luck is research, I'll try to get you pointed in the right direction.
Grade.....yep, its good to be out there. Better pic up that bow. It will make you try harder and you'll be postin pics of a monster on here.
Blacktail.....I wouldn't worry, in fact this just means that you will have better luck than normal. usually they just aren't into it until that season is almost over. NOT the case this year. I would say heck with elk though, and be out there everyday for that permit.
-
Great Job! Like the photos with the story....
-
Just signed up on here and this story impressed me alot. Great job on the hunt bone! Your story reminds me of the way I used to hunt with my dad. 7 hour hike has gotta be a butt buster there. Look forward to reading more of your stories and advise.
-
Thanks Billy, especially a butt buster whenyou shoot a big one back there. Thats a long ways to make multiple trips. I miss my Dad's mule .....well sometimes :beatdeadhorse: I'd probably still be up there trying to load him though. :chuckle: Hopefully we'll have one more big buck story for he year with my Dad and his tag.
-
That is one heck of a buck. congatulations.
-
I was goofing today with the wifes camera. Heres a better pic of the antlers.

Nice pic, gets me into the halloween spirit :)
-
Grats on the buck, nice pics and good story...except for the lousy poacher! I hope at least he went to get it, or it fed a bear for a bit. Anyway, grats! Looked fun and that fire looked nice and toasty.
Cheers,
Saylean
-
Nice deer Doug, looks about 320lbs ;)
-
Well after backpacking him out 8 miles I can tell you what I think he weighed. :)
-
After 8 miles I'm sure he felt like 800 :chuckle:
-
Well after backpacking him out 8 miles I can tell you what I think he weighed. :)
Not bad for an old fart....

Nice pics, looks like beautiful country. At least you didnt have to deal with the snow last year!
-
Huge difference in weather. This year there was about 8 inches of snow and climbing where these pics were taken. Pretty dangerous in the rocks.
-
Big Congrats man!
Michael
-
Thanks Michael, I am envious of your trip. Dang if you would have had a cougar tag in your pocket you could have gotten a double. What did you think of Colorado?
-
The Official score is in
As you might have seen in the moose and elk thread, Lance was out and this is what we came out with. Fingers crossed for the Glenn St Charles award.

Thats a great buck...I am still pissed the camera went Kaput on ya before field pics!!! >:(
-
Sucks seeing these great pics this time of year. It's too far away till I can get back up there. Great shots!
-
Doug,
Do you think this years buck was bigger body wise than last years?
-
Yeah, he was a stocky monster. Very havy mature buck. The other one was a bit younger. I ordered his form today. Another mount for the "garage". :)
-
Congrats again Bone...Saw all the other scores from your other animals too. Looks like you had a great year.
-
Thanks PNWH, it was a very good year. I feel very fortunate to have taken the animals I did.
-
Attaboy Bone u da man!
Michael
-
I hope one one good one a year and you filled a whole wall up. Outstanding year Bone!!!
-
Looks like you have figured it out. Great year, Congrats...
-
Thanks again guys. I'm really looking forward to getting him on a mount. I'll keep you guys posted with the progress along the way. If my knees can handle it, I'll be back on that mountain this fall. I am looking forward to it already. Its a LONG time until fall. This years apps are already going into the mail for all the other possible big hunts, but who knows how that will turn out.
-
Great deer Bone! ..I'm even more impressed with your strategy/effort/dedication!
I've been playing around with different strategies for the last 10 seasons trying to find something worth 'dialing in', but haven't found it yet.
Sounds like you are a day's hike off the nearest road- do you think that's the new rule of thumb to get into low(er) pressure public land? I'm curious to know how your strategy evolved after you decided the area/GMU.
-
Boneaddict hunts his dear in an old Indian burial ground far from civilization where the only deer are trophy deer and the old spirits like to disappear mear mortals.
-
Not neccesarily DANSK. Too much emphasis is put on how far you can get away from the nearest road. Next thing you know its the new boyscout camp with tents lined up. Its all about finding pockets or a spot that you know will hold deer year after year that most either walk by don't tend to want to ruin themselves on. It takes alot of patience to pick a spot that could be alot of work but a total bust and there is no back up plan. You have to put all your cards in one basket. It would take one person other than me as the hunter to ruin this entire hunt. Kurt Darner, one of the famous all time Muley hunters/poacher or whatever worte this in his old book. He killed one of the biggest bucks in his lifetime, and thats saying something, while looking down at a hi-way of passerbys. It was a small pocket that all seemd to drive by. It was no big sweeping ridge where youcould hunt all day. I am also solo, so I only need to meet the needs of the few. When you partner up, then you need to divide. Lots of land out there that isn't very possible to effectively hunt it. I don't think its effective to have a partner in yourback pocket as you make twice as much noise. Then if one has a bad day, its always playing on your subconcious. The largest buck I have ever seen while hunting was less than a 1/2 mile off the road, and I had counted 35 orange shirts that day. He was in a tough pocket, where no one hiked, until they saw my tracks belly crawling and got interested, but thats another story. I have another story where I got a nice fourpoint, looking down at the hiway, and civilization, but specifically went to a brush patch the size of your kitchen, knowing not one soul hunted it because it was on the middle ground. I am sure hundreds of hunters glassed it, but not one hiked to it. It was too far from the top of the ridge or the bottom. You had to devote the time specifically going to one spot. I did, and out jumped a gorgeous 4 point. He had spent all summer and fall sitting there watching the world. He had water and food. Thats all he needed.
I'm probably going to be buried in that boneyard one of these days Passion. Its awefully hard on those knees.
-
This is the last 4 I was talking about. I killed this one afternoon after I had a disgrutnling experince some place else. I had Idabooner drop me off and I took off hiking. I could see town, hear dogs barking, people farming etc while I hiked to where I jumped this buck. I "KNEW" that there was probably a buck in a spot like that even with all of the hunting pressure this place receives. I bet hundreds, and if you have ever hunted stateland in the Methow, then you know I am not exaggerating, walked by this buck. ANyhow, he waited until I was about 25 yards away, then bolted and I nailed him.

-
Of course you heard people farming and dogs barking, you shot him in someones front yard on their halloween display! :chuckle:
-
Did I mention he was a little skinny. I'll get pics up of this mount here shortly. I have a little painting to do on him to touch him up. I was waiting for a video to see how the experts do it. That was a good Halloween display. You've seen pics of my Idaho deer that year too there.

This buck was also killed not too far in. I went over for a photography trip up in the NE corner, and took my pistol along. Then I had this tag burning a hole in my pocket and I decided what the heck. I changed my travel plans, drove an extra 2 hours. I got to the roads end at light and hiked in, saw nine different bucks, and managed to get this guy. Took his picture before I pulle d the trigger. I brought him out whole. Donated the meat in Spoakne to feed the hunger, and made it home that night. I don't think I posted those pictures on here ever, maybe one of the one horned buck. They made it on MM. You'll have to let me know if you are interested.
-
the biggest bucks I have seen have been in places that would amaze people.........I usually go on a hunt every year with some friends and the bucks are in the exact same exact spot ever single year and they are also very very close to mega deer camp. my 2 friends that are much older than I hunt 2 days a year ALWAYS kill there bucks within 15 yards of the same spot and have 40 years of pictures with the same background to prove it.
They are getting a little long in the tooth at this point but they have one of the all time great spots for at 5 min every morning during dear season. to top it off its about 7 min from down town Winthrop. :dunno:
They have killed 5x5's every year for the 25+ years in the same spot its really pretty funny.
-
Thats cool Passion. Hopefully you inherit that brush patch.
That illustrates the point exactly what I am saying. Ever since the Eastmans book of High Country hunting came out, places I used to go are now the same sea of Orange that was down in the Valley. Everyone has this impression that if you hike 9 miles from the road you will be in deer central, or alone. Not the case in either one. You still need to be able to understand the animal, and also the other two legged animals out there. Humans are pretty patternable in what they do. Bottom line is what kind of hunting do you like I guess.
-
At the risk of giving away all of the secrets, just remember, it's not the IN, it's the UP. Going a step further, if your packout involves packing meat uphill, that helps your cause. Further still, if it's a struggle to keep your balance and you fear for your life while coming down with the meat, you're about there. Any yokel can backpack 8 miles in one day and hunt a 15 minute hike from camp, and that is what you see in select portions of the GPW and the sawtooths. Your predawn hike from camp should keep you warm in a t-shirt, and physically about wear you out before daylight.
-
That explains why I can harly walk and my knees are shot.
-
The form arrived tonight. I'll post pics when I dive into the project. Dang I am excited.
-
Which form did you order? I saw that matuska taxidermy supply has a new pedestal mount muley form I may try for a display. Looks pretty nice.
-
I'll check it out. I got a standard wall mount. I'll post up a picture.
-
I couldn't find it on the net bucklucky. Did it come out in a flyer or something. They mostly deal with whitetails I thought.

I really appreciate the help guys- you've been more than generous with the tips. It will definitely help me get 're'-started in the right direction.
-Dansk.
-
Thanks Jackelope. I guess I did find it, but for whatever reason, I can't see a picture. Is there a picture there and AOL is keeping me from it?
-
there was no picture that i could see either, i am assuming there is none at all. i would typically not have any picture viewing issues.
-
Thats just fine and dandy. How do you pick out a form if you can't see the damn thing. I'll get the regular one that I have mounted up here pretty soon so you guys can see what this guy looked like on the hoof. I supposedly have a finishing video coming as well, so maybe I can get a couple of these mounts done and have the pics posted.
-
The big horn show is in Yakima this weekend. Any of you thinking about going. I was thinking about taking the rack.
-
Ok Bone humor us. Lets hear the belly crawling story.
-
Basically I was hunting state land. I had counted a ton of deer and a lot of orange shirts. Its pretty open country but still mecca for mule deer. There is a lot of country that is glassed over because it is steep, and people think they can cover it. Well they glass over a lot which holds deer. Anyway I spotted a 35 plus inch main frame buck with 5 inch kickers off each side. That’s 40 plus inches. He was snorting some does. From where I was at I could see 5 different guys in fluorescent orange on their posts waiting for something to happen. One of them was in a flourescent green hat. There wasn’t much country between me and that deer, so I started belly crawling in several inches of fresh snow. Well I crept closer and closer. I closed the gap to about 500 yards, and was still crawling when one of those *censored*es (the guy in the green hat)came bee-bopping along and ran into my tracks. He then decided to follow me, and came up behind me and loudly stated “what are you doing?” I watched the biggest buck in my life hi-tail it into the thickets. Didn’t see him again until about a month later when I was in the same area, and spotted him. Idabooner was at home with a 102 temperature. I came home on the sled, loaded up came and got him, bundled him up and basically said I don’t care if this is going to kill you, but you have to see this buck. Its something you have to see before dieng, and besides that, no one will believe me how big he is. Hauled his butt back up on the mountain, and we ended up finding him and watching him until dark. WHAT A DEER! He puts my biggest buck to shame. I saw him three times that winter always within 100 yards. No one else knew of him as he was tucked off the road. I shed hunted my arse off, even recruited hornseeker and a few to come help me. Nothing of his antlers. Last I saw of him.
-
Yea I suppose he died of old age. Probably found himself a nice spot where he could watch the sea of orange as he lived out his days.
I remember one year grouse hunting in the Methow. I had been hunting all day and got my limit on fines blues. I decided to go thru this small patch of lodgepole pine and wait the dusk out glassing for deer. Not more than 100 yards off the road I jumped this huge buck that horns were way past his ears go bounding off. You could tell that was his little bedding area with an excellent escape route. He didn't seem to mind the fact that right there was a cattle guard that rattled when everyone drove across it.
-
I watched the biggest buck in my life hi-tail it into the thickets
WHAT A DEER! He puts my biggest buck to shame.
seriously? :dunno:
-
Dead serious! Rates right up there with the greatest bucks of all time anywhere. Pretty much a typical 4x4 with eyeguards, a little weak on them, not alot of mass, but squared framed and wider as all hell. The main was wider than my big buck that taped 33. Add the cheaters off both sides. BUCK of a lifetime, state ground, general season. Survived the whole onslaught. Saw him several times from a distance and watched him a lonmg time with the spotter. No camera stuff at this time. I bumped him close once and that could have been what cost me the sheds.
-
That's some deer running around out there. I 've seen one 7x8 with tons of trash that was around 200" up that way but I'm pretty sure he's dead. Too bad they don't limit the tags up there it could be a really special place :dunno:
-
If you remember they did that and it created some phenomenal hunting. They shut down Alta for permit only for 3-5 years. I found a couple incredible sheds after that. They opened it back up and I bet was awesome for that year. I was hunting elsewhere. Back to square one in one year. I lived in the Methow and was a bit distraught when I couldn't hunt where I normally did. I just moved someplae else. They could easily do that with an area or two.
-
I think the recent increase in late tags is a real problem right now. Giving 5 per unit seemed just fine but with the increased in the late hunts to the current numbers they really created a situation makes it very difficult for a good crop of big 4's to make it through the season. These late hunts are taking 100 mature deer out of the pop after the general season every year so the pigs are few a far in between.
I remember a hillside I use to watch and it was not uncommon to see 15 4pt deer over about an hour in the afternoon and now there are none :dunno:
-
I really wouldn't mind if they shut down one of the Methow units for trophy hunting. It would be nice even in the offseason for photos etc. I'm sure the entiat fellows might think the same thing. It would be nice to seed some deer into the surrounding country. It would improve hunting all around. Maybe a good compromise for quality and quantity. Give out more permits, not necessarily late season even. Take any of those units, offer 100 tags and it would be a quality hunt. One thing that makes the late tags quality is the lack of folks....
-
I agree completly. When they closed unit 342 for a couple years then went to a limted draw for a couple more it made a dramatic affect on the deer heard there were more bigger bucks then ever before. Then in 03 I think it was they opened it up to general hunting and it was a slaughter I hunted it opening weekend and it was INSANE! this past fall 4 short years later I hunted the same area and saw a small fraction of the deer I had in 03 and the bucks I did see were pitiful compared to the ones I saw in 03. I firmly believe that selecting several units in the central part of the state and makeing them limited draw units indifinitly would be a huge step in the right direction JB
-
Hey Bone, where and when is the horn show this weekend. A couple of my friends and I are going to head over the pass this weekend to look at the elk and try and hit the frostbite shoot.
-
It will be at the Sundome. It starts Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. SUnday morning early or Saturday late are the best times to see the antler competition. People start hauling their mounts away about 12-2 on Sunday. Early Sunday is best before the "locals" (sorry, trying hard not to be racist) show up. Sundays are really bad in Yakima. Friday is the best time to get in, usually opens around noon it seems like. Its usually free parking, and you can get around the booths best, but most of the antlers for the competition aren't out yet.
-
It was a successful weekend at the show. I ended up taking first place Archery for Muledeer, and got a plaque for 1st place overall non-typical muledeer. There was a bit of controversy but it all worked out. It came down to whether my deer was a typical or nontypical. My official score is entered as Typical, but if entered as a non-typical, it did better overall. It managed to edge out another buck, which I think came from Idaho. Anyhow, hard to keep straight with as tired as I am. It was great to visit with a friend, and I had fun watching it all unfold. here was lots of excitement as everyone stood around waiting for the announcements or the postings, and I ended up with 4 first place ribbons or trophies. There were some great animals there this year. That Firing center turned out some brutes.
Now I can get this thing mounted....pictures of progress to follow.....

-
The project has started....first off, I drill the back with an inch or so drill and then mount on a hanger. Some forms come with built in hangers. This one from Research did not. I like to use the noose. The come as one solid unit for heavier animals. I split the thing in half. Its built that way, and get two for the price of one.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fbbd.jpg&hash=53012bf8138eca9ea1273c0fc9140fd1cc44d3f2)

-
Then its screwed onto my bench holder.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fbbd3.jpg&hash=f170d4ca96e0db1412c04ec6c4fd2f702b70e537)
-
Then I mount the antlers on. I use the wood block to help me hold it into place. Its all about getting it at the correct angle, and distance from the eye, etc. Once I confirm the cape will indeed match the form, I will bondo this in, which will make it solid as a rock.

That buck looks nicer and nicer the more pics I see :)
-
Bone your buck kicks my bucks a$$ any day. that thing is huge. Mine has a lot of character but your is just a monster. Especially for washington state. Wow. I never did catch what he scored. But I will guess at about 175ish give or take a few inches. anyway congrats on an awesome buck.
-
Keep showing the progress Bone, it is awesome. Congratulations on the awards too!
-
bone, that looks like the same form (mannikin) I'm using! Love that your showing the process! I plan to do the same once I start mounting up my buck! My form is the MD-G-344-55 RT SS from Research. Just got my cape back from the tannery. Now I just need some time!
-
I'll have to check my numbers cowboy. I figured he would look good on the classic semi sneak. His antlers are too tall for an upright. You're nice Red Dawg. Yours is still an awesome buck. It netted 168 and change, grossed non-typical around 180 and something. I think the score sheet is on here up above somewhere. Yeah Passion I was excited about showing it on the form since all the pics were the antlers by themselves. I wanted you all to see it when on the "deer" so you could get a size reference. Thanks Dekuma. I hope you gys enjoy seeing what I do. I'm sure its not what the professionals do, but what the heck. Works for me, so it ought to work for the normal guy. By the way cowboy, thats cheating (tannery). I have to start cleaning mine up and get it in the tan. Talk about time consuming. How much did it cost to get yours tanned? Did you do it locally?
-
thought i saw those horns at the antler display over at the sundome. did you see my rack?
-
bone, I send my capes out to be commercially tanned. I use several tanneries but mine went to the Wildlife Gallery this year. A great tan! It does cost a little more to do it this way but I feel like it is worth it! Not sure on the exact cost but around $40. Cheating? Maybe. But, all I have to do is cape the animal, flesh it out, turn the lips, ears, eyelids, nostrils, and tear ducts, salt it, fan dry it and ship it. I usually request a "Wet Tan."
I enjoy that your posting your mounting process! Hope I can get started on mine one of these days!
-
not sure why my computer decided to post that photo for you, but that isn't my rack! :dunno:
-
Bone, nice looking work. Seems like you and I must've went shopping at the same garage store! Here's a couple shots of the first two deer I did. The one on the right was my buddies and my first attempt. The other one is still my best whitey, about 130. The zilcho eyeguards didn't help the score much, but I like his rack.
-
Nice job Gray Brow, Good lokking mounts and pretty respectable buck too
-
Awesome Gray brow. Yep, the shops look similiar. :) Great animals. Are you a hobbyist, or taxidermist by trade. You do great work.
Klick....I'm pretty sure I saw your antlers there. I was looking for them and found one very similiar. Lots of junk around the base and heavy mossy critter. I'm pretty sure it was yours.
-
Cheating...I was kidding COwboy. Its actually probably not even any more expensive. Its sure a pain in the ass, bu tjust that much more I can call my own I guess.
-
Just a hobby for me, Bone, same as you. I use mainly stuff out of Van Dyke's, which was a good outfit before but especially after Cabela's picked them up. I've tried just about all the major taxi supply outfits and they all seem to be pretty good.
Thanks for the kind words from you and Head-shot.
-
Fun stuff. I just placed my first order from Van Dykes. hadn't realized the Cabelas merger until I ordered. Hey, more points on teh credit card. I just picked up a pedestal elk form I think I will try. May end up with an extra elk head, I lost my measurements of my cape, and was going off memory. :)
-
You can just measure the cape if it's hydrated. Most outfits have a little diagram showing how to do it, it's pretty straight forward. Not ideal, but I've done it and it works fine. It's about the only way you can do it if you ever get a hard salted dried cape off e-bay or wherever for a set of horns you need to mount.
-
I didn't want to thaw it and freeze it again. Hopefully I guessed right. I suppose its tanned so it wouldn't be as much of an issue, but I don't like to tempt fate with these sort of things. The big box came last night, so keep an eye out at the big bull down thread. More taxidermy struggles to come. :)
-
OK the hide has been tanned. I dinked around too long in the woods yesterday to start it like planned. SOooooooosince it was cold, I folded it in a moist sheet to keep it damp and waited for today. I bondoed the antlers on after I did a quick check to make sure the cape fit. It was REAL close on the neck. I cut the slots in the mouth to make it wasier to tuck skin, and I set the eyes and through some clay aroun them. Hopefully not too early. I sewed a hole in the cape. Then I mixed up a batch of bondo and fiberglass and got the ear going. First error, I had a bit more of the ear to split. I tried my best but with bondo already inthere, it becomes a chore. It was taking forever, so I moved onto the next ear. I used a bit more of the kicker and it set fairly fast. I am still waiting on the one ear. I hope it goes soon. I got them aas even as I thought I could. MAN this guy has big ears. As soon as this ear kicks, I'll get too wads of clay to build up the ear butts between the bondo and the form. I've got my waxed sinew ready to sew up the cape, and a paintbrush and hide paste ready. I hate that part as I always get idepaste on my hair. You can wash it off with mineral spirits, but it still is a pain. The tan came out good. In the meantime, I have painted my fox, touched up the nose of my fisher that has been hanging on the wall for years, and painted another buck. That buck from Idaho. 2004 I think.
-
Man this cape was a big fellar. AND talk about ears. I had two forms side by side, and this one was huge.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fbigbtax.jpg&hash=8ffe19342124eb6279a8d8a6b8967a9a3e98e45a)
-
Now I just have to wait for him to dry a bit, and then I can do some more work on his eyes.

-
your buck still gets me going. That is great buck. I would kill to shoot a buck like that.
-
looking good bone nothing but the fun stuff left
-
That is a beautiful cape Bone! That critter has one dark brow! Going to be a really pretty mount sporting a big ole rack!
-
Thanks guys. ....Yeah, he is the biggest in body size I have mounted I think. No wonder I couldn't get him out in only one trip. When the form arrived I thought holy cow as it was next to another form I was getting for another project. THere is no way thet is going to work for this buck. Then the test fit looked good. The neck was close. I don't like stretching them much, but it was a snug fit. His face had more of a roman nose naturally than this form had. I should have added some clay but didn't. I think this is the best all around skills taxidermy job I have done, mostly due to the skinning. Thats half of your battle, making sure to get it fleshed without hacking it to death, getting the eyes and lips done right. This is also the first deer I think I have done where I hadn't split the ear too far and made a whole. Bondo is a bitch to get out of the hair. THIS WAS TRULY a large Mountain buck. His neck was swollen and good to go in the first of October as well. Hopefully he spread some genes before I wacked him. Soonas the nose plugs come out and his eyes set up a bit more, I'll add some pics. I promise with the elk I'll do a better photo job. I was going to walk everyone through the process, but you dive into this, and the next thing I know its done.
-
Looking real good so far. The cape is definetly charactristic of a high mountain buck, nice and dark along with the horns. Do you put the septums in the nose, most guys dont put it ads a touch of realism. Looks like youve had a couple of them forms for a while they are yellowing nicely, I had a bear sitting around for a while that yellowed out like that. Hopefully my buddy will have finished my whitetail by the time I get back into town. Great looking mount cant wait to see it finished.
-
The whitetail to the far right was the first form I ever ordered. I ordered it and it came in and I really didn't have a clue about what I was doing. About the time I went to mount it I realized they sent me the wrong one. I didn't pursue returning it and its a monster. Someday maybe I'll use it.
The other two I need capes for. The whitetail I gave away and the other I didn't pack out. I could have used Idabooners cape this year for the one, but NO CHANCE. His is getting mounted up next on the agenda.
-
Cool man. That buck looks LOTS bigger on the form like that then the pics of Daisy holding it you sent me! NICE!
-
Your buck looks better and better every time I get on here Bone. It's fun watching it come back together and seeing what he looked liked in the field. Love the dark cape and brow...beautiful
-
Thanks PNW. I entered him into a contest last night, we'll have to see how he does. I think the banquet is in April, so I should have the mount done by then. He is drying up nice. I'll do a few more small adjustments on his eyes tonight. I need to get him inside where he can dry a little faster. I think he is going to replace my big whitetail on the wall. I need to get him re-mounted anyway.
-
YAHOOO! The story hasn't stopped yet. I just got the call from the WSB. I WON the Glenn St Charles Award. This is my second time. HOT DIGGITY. I am so excited. I guess I better get my butt in gear and get this mount finished. HOLY MOLY. I guess this means I will be at the banquet. If you have nothing else better to do on a Saturday night on April 12th, stop by and take a gander.
-
Congrats Bone, where is banquet?
48 hours of non-stop blood-sweat-and tears paid off.
-
Congratulations Bone! Way to go.
-
:kneel:
-
It did pay off. I am so jacked. I'm bouncing all over the place. I have no idea 300. I'll get that figured out and get it posted. There was an advertisement on here somehwere, I'll see if I can find the link.
-
I bumped that thread, but here is the link to their site.

-
Congratualtions Bone, that is very exciting, expecially to win it twice. I wonder how many guys in the state have won it more than once, probably not many. I may have to try and make it down to the Banquet. Way to go!
-
Congrats Bone, from what I've seen of you on here you deserve it. Wish I could make to the banquet sounds like fun. CONGRATS again.
-
Way to go brother... sweet! And look at me...no cards or brochures or anything for ya to use. Cant say you didn't warn me! Oh well...
Rory Cook won it a couple times didn't he??
E
-
CONGATULATIONS PARDNER! That was one tough hunt, and you did it solo with a trad bow. I'm sure I couldn't have pulled that off at 1/2 my age. YOU EARNED IT.
-
Thanks guys. It will be fun to meet any of you there that do make it. Yeah I warned you Ernie. i knew he might be in the running. There was a big elk he was up against and I wasn't sure if he could beat it.
The first banquet I went to and I won it with my moose. It was one of the most special nights of my life. Everything just fell into place and It was awesome. I got to sit and eat with Lance and my gorgeous wife, and got to meet all sorts of folks. i have no idea how many times I got to tell mymose story and you guys know I like to tell a story. I came home wiht a cool auction item and a cool raffle item plus the award. I also got to meet with and chat with Glenn himself for a short bit. That was an honor. There are alot of outstanding men and woman at this banquet that are fighting for our hunting rights. They all come together for this banquet and throw heck of a good time. I almost bid on a South African trip. I haven't seen what is being auctioned this year.
The year I won it was aobu he last year for the travelling trophy. You get to keep it for a year then return it and they give you a smaller one for you to keep. I have no idea what it will look like this time. I believe Rory won it three times. Talk about a hunting machine. As far as I know no one else has repeated. Another one of our members on here has won it as well. I'm definatley with good company.
-
Rory is kickin butts and taken names in Montana now!!
-
I bet he is. I was going to ask you how much snow your Dad had as I am headed that way. But....I guess I'll find out for myself. I have a truck full of girls, so I hope tnot too much. : ) Fingers crossed they find a moose shed.
Rory shoots Trad bow now too doesn't he?
-
CONGRATS! :)
-
working on his nose today...running out of time. I used a 5 ml syringe with an 19 guarge needle and some modge Podge. I'll keep you posted with pics.
-
I coerced my wife into going to the banquet this weekend. I'll get to see bone and his trophy up close. Should be fun.
-
my friend, that is a dandy buck if i have ever seen one. glad to know there are more than a few folks who shoot the trad bow. your story is a good lesson in life, if you want it, go get it.
-
Awesome Pope. It will be great to see you there. I'll be the pudgy overweight hasbeen, thinking of a trainging program for when I get selected for that goat permit this year. It will have to be MOntana or Idaho goat since we won't know about Washingotn until its too late to train.
First time I have ever used the modge podge method. I used to epoxy the whole thing and then use the Dan noser thing.........modge podge much better. Hopefully I can get it finished before Saturday.
-
Well......I pertnear have him finsihed. I'll give him a conditioner bath before the banquet, and rub some of the dust off his antlers. My airbrush died temperoraily until I can figure out whats wrong with it. SOOOOO.....I had to hand paint him. I didn't do anythin with his ears. I am thinking about leaving them natural for now.

This was my fist attempt at modgepodge on his nose.....Now I did it differently than bucklucky did. I modgepodge it, then painted then hit it with Bass fish Gloss.

Um, bone...not sure if you noticed this but there is a BEEHIVE in your house... :o
Nose looks a bit glossy...is that how they are supposed to look?
-
I like a wet look. It might be a bit glossy, but the flash also enhances it. I have a couple mistakes I'll need to work on in the next month or so, but It works for now. Yep, nailed that bee's nest in North Idaho last year. I actually got some good shots of it before cutting it down. That was also a negotiation process to have that in the house. :)
-
Looks good Bone, again congrats on the award.
-
Awesome mount Boneaddict, Do you have any pics of the other next to it as well?
-

Nice work, hellava buck!
-
i am no taxidermy expert but i think it looks great. Congrats on the award as well.
-
That's not the sneak pose, would you call it the curious pose. Nice work Bone!!
-
whitetail looks out of place!! I say you replace him with a muley and make a separate wall somewhere else in the house for whiteys!! haha :dunno:
-
I wondered that as well....I didn't think it looked symmetrical with the two muleys and whitetail. My arguement was to put 4 deer on the wall. I lost though, its a 3 deer wall maximium.
-
Good job Bone!
-
Turned out great!
-
I was there to see Boneaddict get the Glenn St. Charles award last night at the Washington State Bowhunters banquet for this buck. It was a fun event. Congrats Bone. I expect you will keep the trophy plaque in good condition as I am planning/hoping that it will be hanging on my wall next year... :)
-
 I see a wall in the back ground that looks pretty bare. I think a deer might fit on it. :IBCOOL:
Your going to have to explain this award to me, because I have never heard of it befor.
-
The way it was explained at the banquet is the winner must shoot an animal and score it. The animal closest to the WA record percentage wise wins it...? Someone correct me if they know but that's the jist of it. So I figure my 240" Rosey bull might win it next year... We'll see.
-
Again, Congrats! The Glenn St. Charles award is a prestigious honor. Any pictures of the event, award presentation, or the trophy plaque?
-
Is it just any old set of horns from an animal you've killed or does it have to be killed that year or year previous.
-
I am so mad. Didn't realize that the banquet was in Tacoma. Thats only about a 40 minute drive from my place. :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
Sorry, I didn't bring my camera but maybe I should have. Dennis Dunn did a presentation and hosted the auction. There were some great trips and prizes. I tried to win a couple but got outbid. I must say if someone wants a new bow next year go to this auction. There were some top quality bow setups going for 300-400 dollars... :o
I think you have to shoot the animal with a bow that previous season to enter the Glenn St. Charles award. That's the impression I received.
-
First of all, it was great to meet Pope and his wife. I'm glad it worked out that you got to sit with us at our table. That made the night great.
The Washington State Bowhunters is an organization that is the front line defense against the anti's in regards to bowhunting. I have heard reference that this club is biased or traditionalists and I couldn't disagree more. The founding fathers, several of which were there last night, are the voices that have made bowhunting the way it is today in Washington. They fight for our rights to have equal share in the harvest. It was cool to see the Lt. Governor there last night and to see he was a hunter. Anyway, back to the history lesson, several of these gents were there to fight for us. Their main goal is to couner the anti hunting forces that are now after bowhunting. They have got trapping and hound hunting, now its to the next smallest group. Its easy for them to take a short video of a wounded deer with an arrow sticking out of its ass, and then convince those that don't sway either way, to go anti hunting. They did it with hounds and trapping. As soon as they get bowhunting, then its to muzzelloading. The club fights this through the "Bowhunting defense fund." Much of this banquet is to raise money for that. Tons of folks donate items that are either raffled off, silent auctioned, or the bigger items, live auctioned. I wouldn't say there were alot of deals, as folks were extremely generous for the club and the money was flowing. It was cool to see. I have no idea hw many items were there. There were 11 listed and another 5 0r 6 that wren't listed, live auctioned items. These ranged from bows to artwork, to hunting trips, and even a trip to Puerta Villarta....by the way, Pope's wife about knocked me out of my seat when she bid for that. :) I about gave my wife a heart attack when I bid $300 on a draw knife signed by Glenn St Charles himself. I would have loved to have had that for a souvenire, and its probably worth a thousand or more on ebay, but thats as high as I could go. Anyhow, I will be curious to see how much was raised last night. HORNSEEKER, I wish oyu could have gotten that bow finished for donation. It would have went for a mint. The night was awesome. There were several very nice mounts, and alot of really nice people. Chuck Bartlett was also honored. He was one of those gentleman that I mentioned earlier. He is also the man who took the photo of our current game pamphlet. A signed postersized copy of that picture went for $900 dollars. I am curious to look up more of his work....
The Glenn St Charles award is an award given to a bowhunter, who as Pope describes it shoots an animal in the current year while bowhunting. It is compared to all entries as they are put into a formulae comparing them tot he current world record of that species. The one with the highest percentage wins. There are some great hunters that have won this award and I am very honored. With it comes a travelling trophy with all the names and scores and animals listed. I think it began back in 86. You get to keep that award for the year. You then get an individual award you get to keep. Al Rinaldi is also one of those founding gentleman, and who was responisble for getting Pope to the banquet. he has won the award twice also. his whitetail mount was there, along with an incredible ram I didn't get the story for, and several great elk. One of those was taken by either a member on here or a "lurker". ;) It was good to meet you too Steve.
I'll get pics of the award here shortly. I hope that explains some thing for folks.
The club has a membership for about $15-25 dollars a year, I'll have to look. With that ou get a monthly newletter with lots of updats on things and information and usually a story or two. Timber had his photo on the front cover this last issue. You are also another voice against the anti's. The bigger we are the more the folks on the hill will pay attention. Thanks again everyone.
-
One other thing I might add about the banquet last night... I was really surprised that most of the membership was in the older age bracket. There was only Bone, me, and a few other younger guys. There was a big age discrepancy. While I only became a member yesterday, I want to encourage those of you that are 20-40 to join this group. It would be nice to get some young blood in the group.
The last thought I had was for all of you out there that post on here that they want a hunting buddy or they are new to the area. If you are a bowhunter or want to be one I would direct them to a group like this. You will meet a ton of people and will undoubtedly find a hunting buddy. Sometimes it's hard to connect with people on a forum so you will rarely find people willing to buddy up through a forum. A group like this can really benefit someone in that position.
-
Very true. I'm also amazed at how many bowhunters there are and none are members. These are the guys lobbying for our seasons and protecting our rights. MAN what a wealth of knowledge there was at that banquet last night. One of the things I regret bidding on was that dinner at the gentlemans house. There was a wild game dinner they average about 8 -9 kinds of game plus all the wine you want for 8 folks at this older gentlemans house. He was a retired Dr. Anyhow, I guess he has some house and neat museum type mounts. They ere alking extoc stuff like gator, ostrich, and stuff like that, plus all types of fish. Anyhow the first gentleman bid $400, he then stood up and said that he would split it, that would be dinner for 2 for him and his wife and then they could split the other three couples. They then went for 250,250 and350 or something like that. Anyhow, I would have loved to have heard the stories from these guys and wish I had bid now. Seems insane, but I guess it lasted for about 8 hours las January and they sat around the fireplace and ate and drank and told stories. There were alot of guys there that it would have been easy to hook up with to hunter. VERY FRIENDLY atmosphere. Basically Pope and I really didn't know anyone, and wherever we went, we were talking with someone. Another one of the items for bid was a chukar hunt with this same doc, one of the past presidents and his dog, in several of their "Secret" spots. I think it went for $150 or $125. Meal and wine included. I would pay that almost just to BS with these guys for a day. Chukarridge on here would have been in heaven.
-
How do you join boneaddict. If I would have put 2 and 2 together and realized it was in Tacoma this weekend I would have been their. I more than likely would have given them a free deer shoulder mount to auction off. Guess I'll hit it next year.
-
I also regretted not bidding on the upland game hunt with those guys. Like you said, just to hunt with a couple guys that know so much about WA hunting would have been special. And at $150 or whatever it went for... Dang.
The dinner sounded good and reasonable but my wife isn't the biggest wild game eater out there. I've got her good to go on Elk so I'm not going to push anything else like gator or ostrich on her. We should have split the bid on the dinner and brought each other as man dates... :o
For those of you interested, here is their website:
http://www.wabowhunters.org/Default.aspx

No doubt. I really wanted to see that guys basement.
Michelle....check out that website or I can get you sign up sheet. If you are on-line savy, thats probably the best. I haven't been to the website since they changed the format. You can see I'm not the most active member. It would be a great place to do some more networking or drum up more business Michelle. They would always welomce any donated auction items. One taxidermist donated a $6oo deer mount(or taxidermy work) that I think went for $300. One donated a bird mount(taxidermy work) that went for $150 I think...chukar or grouse or pheasant. One was Moro taxidermy and I don't remember the other.
Some other items that were auctioned was a salmon fishing trip...
A summer steelhead float trip. (I almost wondered if this was from Tmike)
elk fighting picture
grizzly painting framed and matted
elk painting framed and matted with a broadhead (largeknapped)
elk painting framed and matted with two ivories

Heres that award.......I'm really not posting these for ego either guys) I am just plain excited and glad to share. It doesn't really match my living room, but its up front and center. I have at least one daughter that wants to win it.

-
a fine looking mount man. recurve or longbow? i cannot imagine shooting a buck that big with my bow. wowee, that looks better everytime i see it.
-
longbow.....If you check out the bigbulldown thread you can see a picture of it. Actually way earlier in this thread there is a picture with first buck I got with it I think.
Pope....You might take it with a 240 Roosie, but its going to have to compete with my sheep this year. Oh maybe that was goat.
One other Roosie took it back a few years ago.....340 bull...nice ROOSIE
Here are the statistics for anyone who cares
Whitetail......9
Mule............3
Blacktail.......1
Yellowstone...4
Roosie..........1
Moose..........2
Goat............1 (I'm not sure if that was the one that was there or not, up front)
-
myself, i have never been a member of groups and organizations(other than NRA), or gunclubs. mostly i guess b/c im still relativley new to the state(five years). that and money. but now things are a little different. growing up and such i never hunted with anyone really. i was happier by myself. now i want to hunt with others now. to learn more and to just have more fun.
-
Yeah, I am prety much Mr. Solo, except hunts with Idabooner. I even usually keep to myself. You guys see a differetn side of boneaddict than most people do. I don't participate in very many of the clubs I belong to. I do sign up for more than most if I agree in their mission statement. Even if its to make myself a statistic, when they are doing the lobbying for me. I have supported the WSB more than most clubs with donations just because I agree with what they ar doing. This may sound weird, but I have waivered on the NRA a couple times. Sometimes I didn't like what they were selling. That was probably stupid as they are fighting the fight just as well, just ona different front. Also, I don't like theri phone tactics and such...damn right rude actually.
-
Hey, John Mullenburg 2003 is on the traveling trophy, havent seen him in years. He sure is a good guy. Cool looking plaques!
-
I don't know him Bear....I've had the pleasure of meeting alot of those guys. That Rory Cook fellow is a hunting machine. He is beating the woods over in Hornseekers neck of the woods now. Lances bull is on here now and his story. Thats a great hunt and what inpsired me to go after my moose with a bow. I wore my hunting-washington.com hat to the banquet.....left the fancy cowboy hat at home this time. I was hoping a few of those gents might sign up. You should get after Mr. Rinaldi Pope. That man can tell a story or two and he obviously has a love for hunting and has been at it.
-
Looking forward to BigBuckDownII I just found out I drew Montana. YEAH Luck is pickin' up. Now I just need a sheep tag to mess things really up. Hopefully I didn't just really jinx myself, but at least I don't have to have Washington to rely on.
-
Excellent, congrats!
Guys, I am on the board of directors for the Montana Bowhunters Association and the same story goes here... we have about 900 members and there are nearly 32,000 bow licenses sold each year. The reason there are such good seasons, can be attributed SOLEY to the MBA.. Every bit of archery hunting you guys have has SOMETHING to do with WSB.. guaranteed...if someone wasn't fighting for the bow hunters, the rifle or muzzleloaders would take it away...guaranteed.... SO... JOIN.. No, they and We aren't elitist traditionalist. Around 2/3 of our members are compound shooters...and i could care less...
Ernie

By the way, here's a pic of Bone's bow, when it was brand new...
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2FDugsDoneriserrs.jpg&hash=8c40855a13d8f92aed3bc86bbb1d79b3de352e15)
-
I would like to get Rinaldi on here. I am going to try. I get the feeling he isn't the most computer savy guy...and it takes him a while to check emails. Seems like it would be a good way for those guys to promote the club.
By the way Ernie...I keep dreaming about that super wide whitetail. Not sure what to do about it.
-
Congats Bone. Wasn't sure you had won the Award but was pulling for you.
Now Chuck Barttlet will have some competition for the cover photos with Pope on board. You too Bone.
I too would encourage all to support WSB, it truly has had an positive impact for bowhunting in Wa. through the years.
The organization also has a substantial record keeping component for WA bowhunting entries that doesn't require any fee
nor does it require one to be a WSB member to submit entries.
-
Thanks for posting the pictures of the award Bone! Cool loking plaques!
-
Great job Bone, Those are some very cool looking awards, something to be very proud of for sure.
-
i joined this year at the sportsmens show in monroe. $25 a year, figured it was a good deal for a magazine and a good cause. i have never even hunted a season with a bow yet...ever...but plan to this year. maybe next year i'll hit up the banquet too. sounds like a great time.
organizations like this need younger folks to carry them on for the future.
congrats bone.
-
Thanks guys. What a year!
Chuck was flying under my radar. I want to research and see more of his work. I've submitted one photo to the magazine and had it published as a cover photo. I'll try to get it on here. I haven't submitted any for several years. I probably should try again.
Thats awesome Jack. I'm glad you signed up. We'll get that bowhunting going. ITs fun stuff.
-
Congrats on the award Bone. Well done  Thanks for ALL your stories and photos. Man,that is one sweet looking bow!
-
In 95' I spent the summer working on the Hoh, Queets and Quinalt Rivers... I met Chuck and Grace up the Quinalt and they invited me in their trailer and showed me some pics... I've been soooo impressed with their work... they have THE best Rosy pics in the world, barrr none.... Good stuff for sure... Very nice people too.
It'd be REAL fun to go to the park and shoot rosys for a few days in early September.... as long as it didn't pour rain on you the whole time!
-
Fantastic. Just read this thread again. Well done Boneaddict. No surprise from my end though. You're always doing the work to get a nice animal. I am envious if not jealous. :whoo:
-
We'll have to have you and the family come over next year Ernie, the girls can do theri thing witht he kids and we can go to the banquet, or send the kids to grandmas and we can go or if they all want to go that would be fun too. Those old fellars are awesome to listen tell their stories. I'm sure one of the members on here will be getting this award next year anyway.
Thanks Ray...thats some read. I had no idea my year would be this great. I have a feeling Hornseeker and I will be reliving alot of Montana adventures about this time next year.
-
How do I go about joining the WSB association, Im ready to join, thought about it in the past, just never done it. Someone point me in the right direction and Im in :)
-
I believe Bone posted a link to their website a page or so up. I think it's cheap and I'd like to see a lot of us from this board at the banquet last year. I think we could really have a good time in that club and add to their membership. There are some real movers and shakers in that club and you could make a real difference with them. At least that's the feeling I get and I'm going to continue with the club and try and be active.
I hear they have a club Rendezvous in Packwood at some ranch. People bring their motorhomes and camp and shoot bows/3d for 3 days together. Sitting around camp fires with a beer listening to some of the stories from those old buggers would be fun. I got a big motorhome that has three beds in it and I'm planning on going.
-
http://www.wabowhunters.org/Default.aspx (http://www.wabowhunters.org/Default.aspx)
Then to the right in small letters you will see a title about WSB. Click o nit and then on the left a link will appear "join the WSB" as you will see its actually $15 for a year membership. $20 for supporting meaning you give a little extra.
Thanks for your interest guys.......THATS AWESOME. and it would be good to see alot of folks join up. Everyone is always coplaining about losing rights and wondering what they can do. A united voice has alot of pull in this state.
-
Bone, the join function isn't working. I had to call Kim and get her to mail me an appplication.
-
Thanks everyone!
Interesting that you chose to hunt with a bow during modern season.
A lot of things go on in the pasayten when poachers think they are the only ones in the area. You are lucky he did not spot you in your blaze orange vest.
Just my two bits.
-
I'll scan an application and maybe you guys can save it to your desktop and then print it....or I suppose contact Kim. I'm not sure what is wrong with it Killbilly. Thanks for thinking about supposting the club.
Chopaka, many things crossed my mind up there. I was mad, frustrated, adrenaline was alread flowing because I had jsut rolled down the mountain. For one, it was the day before season so I didn't have orange on and I was scouting. That is one of th ereasons I didn't have big heroics and run up there. Not much could have happened if I would have confronted him except he would have for sure abandoned the deer. This way he probably at least tagged it and collected it. If my camera would have been working I'd got good enough photos for evidence and gave the dept. something more to go on. When I do where my blaze orange, and I do. i often take it off for photos. The pattern is a real good custom one thanks to my wife and with all of the yellows and oranges of the fall, I still blend in rather effectively, especially for deer, but for humans as well.
-
You'll all note another common sponsor on this form.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fapplicationwsm.jpg&hash=49adfe2691ed4c5ccd48e1f568bc2389dc5b28ab)
-
You'll note its a prety simple form. You can either click on the picture, then save it to your desk top and/or print it. ORRRRR because it is so simple, just note what it askes for, and send a check with your information in and I bet that would work fine for Kim. I didn't mena to turn this thread into a membership drive, but anyone interested its a great cause. Then go out and kill a big one and get that award next year. I'll keep it safe for you this year.
-
Bone, I could have been a little more explicit. Kim said that she thought someone was working on the website and the form wasn't working right. But my form is in the mail. Thanks for the heads up on this Organization
-
Thats GREAT Killbilly. WElcome to the club. One more voice against the anti's.
-
Glad to hear you are using adequate hunter orange safety precautions. Some of the things we all see going on are troubling, it would be horrible to read about a bowhunter being shot during modern firearm season because the shooter mistook him for a coyote or some other lame excuse ginned up by his defense council.
peace - Don
-
Thanks to a fellow member of the site and of the WSB.....here are a couple shots from the banquet. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for taking them and thanks for sending them on to me.

Well Congrats again Bone. I want to know what you said in the little speech you gave. Did you thank your family, friends, fellow Hunting-Washington.com members? Also did you thank the other hunters for not having the preserverence to attempt such a hunt? Inquiring minds want to know?
-
It was a rather short, humble thank you for the trophy and the honor. He didn't give out any gps points as to where it was shot. :'(
I would have probably told some long drawn out story about how I stalked the deer barefoot for 2 days, but Bone kept it short and simple :P
-
oh mammy!! who got the pictures of sasquatch? A semi civilized sasqautch ate that wearing clothes and what not standing next to people.
-
I told everyone I shot it in the Methow, but you all know I got it in the entiat, so that should make some better hunting up there. ;)
I did plug my bowmaker and I did keep it pretty short this year. As you can see in the photos, I wore my hunting-washington.com hat with pride. I decided to leave the felt Stetson at home.
The guy to the left in the tie is Pope's friend and the previous year winner of the award. the guy presenting is Greg McTee, the records chairman. He does a great job. The fellow in the front of both pics is the new president. Thats Mr. Pingnotti or however you spell it. Apparantly he HATES speaking in front of folks and you can see he was a bit nervous, even in my picture. his event turned out great and he did a great job. If you study close you can see a bit of some o fthe art that was auctioned.
-
Compared to littlefoot, I probably could be called bigfoot I suppose. You'll all note my boottracks when you see them out in the woods and the long strides. You'll know Boneaddict was here. It does help to bring them 300 pounders out over my shoulder and those moose quarters. I think thats why I was letting that fellow that brought out the elk whole dig his own grave, as I can't do that and I'm not exactly a little man. :chuckle:
-
Here you go Mossback.......I took down that nasty whitie. We'll see what the Mrs. thinks about this.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Ftrproom.jpg&hash=7281136539909a76e2ea95317c4651f28389a79f)
-
They ya go nice and unison now. Wheres the new whitey wall?? ahha
-
If the Mrs complains one more time I'm thinking about putting them above the bed.......or maybe the Alaskan moose would look good there. She was a bit crabby tonight.....she graduated from Okanogan so that should expalin a few things to you.
-
5 months later...still crabby. :chuckle: especially last night when she finally counted up all the tags I will be trying to fill this Fall LOL! Time to work on the elk wall Moss.
-
My girlfriend was and still is pissed when she found out how much time away from her I will be spending!! Peaches archery, home for 3 days, Selway elk, straight to winthrop for opening deer season, home for 7 days, then Fly in wilderness to Idaho! Did I mention I have both the deer and elk multiseasons to use to their fullest potential. Happy Hunting!
-
5 months later...still crabby. :chuckle: especially last night when she finally counted up all the tags I will be trying to fill this Fall LOL!
:lol4: I hear ya Bone, my wife told me the other day that I may have to go get ANOTHER freazer this year. Washington archery elkearly Sept, Montana archery elk end of Sept, Wash. moose Oct 1st-?, Wash modern deer last week of season Oct. Montana deer Nov. 8th-? :yike:
-
Talking with a friend of mine a couple of days ago who is what I consider an extreme outdoorsman/hunter. He and his wife have been married 20+ years. He hunts Idaho, Montana & Washington and does well with the elk, Mule Deer, and Whitetail. Anyway, He always mentions that "Once huntin' season rolls around, the marriage is off!." He works for himself so usually, he doesn't work during hunting season and can plan yearly multiple lengthy hunting trips. He made it abundantly clear his intention before the marriage.
Now, in my house, I think I have a pretty tolerant wife. I also tried to be clear on some of my intentions (as did my wife with hers) and although my wife doesn't hunt, she puts up with our hunts, firearms, shooting, taxidermy, scouting trips, etc. But if I tried that "Once hunting season starts, the marriage is off" deal, I'd be the one hung up and skinned. :chuckle:
-
What a tough position to be in Phool! I is jealous.
My wife hunts so she understands for the most part. Not too happy about bear hunting right now though........ She does not want to hunt them, but September she will be with me after Rabbit and grouse which she loves to chase.
-
I have 3 freezers in the garage and two in the house including the one with the fridge. :chuckle: In fact, My old freezer died while I was cutting up my AK moose. Idabooner and I had to make a tripto town. :chuckle: .
As for the Mrs.... she informed me last night that she was a very supportive spouse of my hunting habits, of course I had to bring up previous infractions to the contrary. I'm pretty sure I lost that battle. :) I was also informed that she has no problem with me being on this website. I thought that onw was also funny and I had a few instances, y :)ep lost that one too.

My wife has dealt with it and acquired a tast for elk/deer/moose burger/sausage. However, the moose head is coming from the taxidermist here soon...
-
You do remember how big that thing was right? I couldn't get Idabooners through the front door and barely got it through the slider. That damn nose is big and in the opposite direction of the bone. Hence why I get to keep it at my house. :chuckle:
-
I don't remember. That's the problem. I don't even remember what it looks like to be honest. I need to get it soon. I'm going through withdrawls.
-
The freezer comments crack me up. I have one for fur, one for food, and one that is a combination. That is my limit until I get a shop or a bigger house. When all three are full I am either making a lot of jerky, selling green pelts, or donating meat to friends and family.
-
Yeah, it would be cool to get up on the board before these boys hit the field. i was thinking about posting one moose picture each week and see if they would shoot, or not, then save it for blackmail material when they come on here with their moose. :)
Ya Travis, I am probably donating a bnch of meat this year. That last washington tag, I may send out a call. He who comes and packs can have what they pack out. Not one once will go to waste, even if I have to throw a big HUNT WA barbecue. BYOB, bring your own barbecue, meat and Jack provided.
-
Both those ideas work for me Bone! Just say the word!
-
Yea I want in on that Alta tag hunt. :IBCOOL:
-

I'm in, I have dibs on the head, rack and cape. :chuckle:
-
Might have to Rob, the horn room is getting awefully full and so is the freezer.
-

I picked up another freezer today. You can always build a new game room Bone :chuckle:
-
I sure hope this Hunt goes a little better than my elk hunts so far, at least in the tag notching department. Headed out tomorrow for the land of big bucks. My luck there will be 10 orange vests on the ridge I am hunting Saturday morning, and no bucks. LOL Here is to finding one this year that tops last years buck. If this weather doesn't change I will be hunting the SAME spot. Hopefully I will get some pics of some bucks I have turned down for you all. Lets see if I can find one that meets this years standards.
-
good luck go get em
-
Go get em Bone! It is sure to be a great hunt regardless of what happens! Looking forward to your report when you get back!
-
Can't wait for ya to get back with us Bone!
-
You packing your stick and string?
-
Go get 'em Doug! Sure am jealous of all you people headin out hunting this weekend!!!!
Michael
-
Your gona have to kill a monster if you want that Hunt Wa trophy! Gona have to net like 185 typ or non typ ! Good luck Doug ! No pressure, no pressure. :chuckle:
-
good luck, 185 no problem :chuckle:
-
Yep stick and string and the rifle somewhere in camp. I counted 10 drops this morning in Yakima, so maybe, just maybe the mountain will be white by tomorrow morning. Yeah you turkeys, I looked all fall for a bull that would beat your guys' and no deal. I guess it will take a big Muley. LOL Might be my first Booner Mule deer. That would be cool. If its 180 or trashy, it will probaby die. Scouting reports have been pretty dismal, but I have a few days to put it together.
-
I thought the trophy was a given for you this year Bone, but you have stiff competition. But, as we all know here, if anyone can pull it off, you can. Cannot wait to hear your report back and see the many pics you always thrill us with.
-
Thanks Scott, by the way, got something in the mail. Thanks for getting them to me. I hope they glass up a big one. Its all fun. Mostyl what I am looking forward to is being out there when 10,000 others are not, and instead of just carrying a camera, being able to actually hunt. I hope that doesn't change what I normally see.
-
Wow. Glad you got them before you left. I was worried. Sorry I did not get them all cleaned up for you, but when I realized the timing and that we had a mix-up I shipped them immediately.
They will certainly bring them close up in the eye pieces, the rest is up to you. Hope they bring you more success than they did me!
-
Bucklucky-
From how I understand the competition, you will have won the trophy once you submit that darn thing. Am I right? If so when are you submitting that bull?
-

I wouldn't hand him the trophy quite yet, word has it there may be a little competition left out there ;)

Looking pretty sparse out here. Not much for deer yet, fingers crossed for some weather, or I guess I will go after them. Deer are starting to move. Saw a 24inch 4 point coming over Blewitt at 2 in the afternoon and then 2 bucks right at dark here. One was pushing a couple does. SO it is starting. I went throught he canyon and got one ram that wasn't a mile away. Lots of them out there a ways. Swung through the Swakane but didn't see any. Scored a couple hawk and eagle pics I'll share with you all later. Hopefully by this time tomorrow I will be posting some big ones I turned down.
-
Good luck Bone
-
I stare up at this critter on the wall everynight and dream when I get to go on a hunt like this. I'm not sure if all of you Dads know how cool it is to have critters on the wall for teir kids. Dad says that him staring up at Idabooners (gramps) moose horns everyday is what made him wnat to go moose hunting so much. I believe him.
-
well pretty nice, those there are average where i hunt, the ones over 30'' wide are the funs ones to hunt been stalking one now for 2 seasons in same hide'y hole close but no cigar fun anyway, when i get the one thats over 30'' wide then i may consider a shoulder mount
-
The Official score is in
As you might have seen in the moose and elk thread, Lance was out and this is what we came out with. Fingers crossed for the Glenn St Charles award.

why isn't the G4 measurement difference 1 6/8
-
Glad to see this thread get resurrected. What an awesome buck!
-
Well, that there would be a mistake. :chuckle: Goes to show how many times you stare at it, add it, subtract it, even the "pros" make an error. Its amazing how many hundreds of people have stared at that and you were the first to pick it up.
-
how do you figure the spread credit? I tried scoring a couple of my bucks last night for fun but dont know how to figure the spread credit.
thanks,
-
Its the inside spread, up to the length of the longest mainbeam. (I think its the longest one) so.... if you have a 20 inch inside spread but only an 18 inch main beam, you get 18. If you have 20 inch inside and a 21 inch mainbeam, you get the 20.

I'm trying to decide if I want to go back here this week. I'd have to pack in one day, hunt one day and pack out one day, and miss my daughters soccer games. I could call it a season and save my PTO. I might even be able to coax the Mrs into going during the modern. I wonder if the big one is still there? I've tried two other haunts and haven't found what I am after..............Crap decisions desicions.......
-
Hunt, hunt, hunt, hunt!
-
Can you sleep not knowing if he is there? That's why I am heading back out, gotta see if I can track him down.
-
Hope your Get Big BUCK! Have fun..... I wont bother your spot.... ;)
Mulehunter :)
-
Can you sleep not knowing if he is there? That's why I am heading back out, gotta see if I can track him down.
It is eating on me. I'm kinda disturbed that I couldn't see anything of the quality I am used to in the other two spots.
-
I am sure you will find something, I am just looking for a decent 3.
-
Mild seasonable temps for the next week. These guys should be busy packing on the weight up high...........
-
Well so much for the honey does :chuckle: :chuckle: that was a half hour well spent! I love your stories/bucks bone
-
I probalby shouldn't look at the forcast. That might discourage me. LOL I'm two for two for wet adventures, but that generally won't stop me. I hate the fog though. Clarify, I don't mind hunting in the fog, but it sucks for viewing those basins and stalking.
-
Iget in trouble all the time with the Mrs 400. You might as well too.

Wouldnt want to try for the late season?
-
I know it's a hump to get in there, and a pain to miss the soccer games, but think about it; most of the guys on this site (myself included), and most of the serious mule deer hunters in this state would kill just to know about that spot. You put a lot of time and effort into just finding it. You earned it. Go hunt it.
Good luck.

Whats more important to you? Going hunting or watching your daughters soccer game? I can tell you that my dad never missed one of my high school wrestling matches. He even quit his job so he would be able to watch me wrestle my last matches in the Tacoma Dome. I am glad that he was at every one of my matches. Nothing better then looking to the top of the bleachers before a tough match and seeing my dad give me the fist pump meaning "Lets go....Leave it all on the mat."
You'll be able to hunt when she has grown up and moved on, but you won't be able to go back and watch her play soccer.
-
Nice buck congrats
-
Do you need the PTO for the Ruby hunt? just saying.... there are other hunts to think about. :chuckle:
-
Nice buck bone. Congrats. Are you sure about the score though, it looks about a 150-160 class buck. Have you had it officially scored?
-
Yes it was officially scored. Pathfinder and bowman have absolutely summed up the two camps or voices in my head which have been literally ripping me apart that last year or so since they have become seriously involved in sports. Ask Idabooner. he just shakes his head I think when he sees me pulling off the mountain early. Even my Ruby hunt is in Jeopardy. I have the vacation whacker, though its TIGHT. I've burned alot of midnite oil and gas in order to make it back to not miss a game. One of my issues with some of these sports lately though is that they don't go for a season. They are becoming year around conflicts. Its almost crazy.
-
Damn, I better have my deer scored than, it may go over 200!
-
Well Bone, PathfinderJR is a bona-fide sports-nut. He plays everything; football, baseball, basketball, and in the summer soccer and flag football...you get the idea. And he LOVES that I help coach when my job allows me the time, and that I hardly ever miss a game. BUT, he understands when I have to miss a game for work, and he has no problem if I miss a game of his for an extraordinary hunt. Last year and this year I drew Montana, so I'll miss a couple of game in November and I know for a fact that if I cancelled my hunt because of his game, that he would feel bad. I know what you mean, and I hate to miss a game, and if it were a playoff, or a championship game, then that would be different. But for a general season game...? Our hunting seasons are very short, and we don't get to pick them.
I forget who said "What is the best time of day to go fishing? The answer is; whenever you can..."
-
Ask Idabooner. he just shakes his head I think when he sees me pulling off the mountain early.
Ya, you got that right :dunno:
-
my little princess is now playing fallball , this softball is year round looks like I'll miss a game for my multiseason deer tag , it's gonna be crushing since 2nd grade she hasn't missed a practice or a game and i've been there to see them all and coach. now as a eighth grader she understands how short hunting season really is, bring home a huge buck and a gift from dads trip and they will be ok with it.
-
It sure does seem like your girl really likes it when you go out hunting and bring something home. I think if it is a regular season game go for the hunt I know it is hard just make sure to bring a big one home for your girl.. I think that is most likely what she would want but I may be wrong.. :twocents:
-

I just happened to run across this post from my son, bowman. He's never before told me how glad he was that I never missed a match. Maybe it never crossed his mind that I could miss a match. I was just always there. As time goes by and he looks back at his wrestling I think he'll appreciate even more that I was always there.
I used to work with a guy who would often wonder out loud why his adult son rarely came to visit. Come to find out his son played high school basketball and he NEVER went to a game. Hmm? I think that says something.
For me, I wouldn't trade the pride I felt every time my son stepped on the mat for a world record Muley. And that's the truth.
-
Funny that you mention making it to the youth sports activities as parents now. My parents never made it to my Baseball or Wrestling events. They were into sports at home, either listening to the radio or watching television but not into the weekend or evening events I was participating in. There were excuses.. I knew. They just weren't as competitive as I was. I was the little guy at school and always seemed to be proving myself as a tough guy. Now our boys, maybe on the smaller side of the croud, but not the smallest, have become accomplished athletes on thier own in their chosen sports. I don't miss a game/contest at all if I can help it. Momma either. One of us are at games even if there are schedule conflicts. We have switched from the Soccer field to the Baseball field across town at half time. We've been torn, when one kid is competing across state in an academic or sporting event, and the other is committed to a sporting team in the other direction. Last night my eldest had an indoor Soccer game at 11pm in Bellingham. (yeah, on a school/work night) After a little task of the evening with Testar77, I just had to run into town and watch him play. I didn't even think twice about it.
The oil companies love us!
The boys 'say' it's not important that we're there. Still, I know they appreciate it. And I hope down the road they do the same for thier kids. Every kid is different. Every set of parents is different. I have been fortunate to see divorcees standing on the sidelines rooting on thier kids with ruthless abandon. Civil. Cordial. Countless times I see parents embrace at the successes of their kids. Makes a parent proud, grinning from ear to ear. Even a tear once in a while. Tears of joy! Seldom sorrow. Even when there is sorrow, there is shared sorrow with that child. That's how we grow. That's how we teach them that everything isn't going to be handed to them. They need to work hard to be successful in athletics, academics, carreer and relationships.
I do not have a big buck down as the title of this thread pronounces. (Boneaddict) I had some time in the high country mid/late last week. At times I wished I'd have started the high hunt many years ago. But that would have been through the youth sports of my boys. Even one extra week or two of hunting when they are little and starting flag football or basketball in the fall is a loss for a parent. Now, they join me for general deer season. The youngest hunts ducks with a buddy. Someday all too soon they'll be so tied up with college or starting adult lives of their own that they can only make it to deer camp for a short while. Hopefully after that they'll be able to sit around the fire again for the whole season. Maybe even bring one of our then grand children and/or thier wives too.
There will be time to hit the hills. Then I'll feel guilty for not making it to one of the grand kids games and rush home to the scrimmage line.

-
Well said Steve!
-
My real thought is that there needs to be balance. It is important to do both if possible, but it is not always possible. We have two kids in two sports which occasionally conflict. One event may be bigger than the other..IE: A ballet performance versus a routine Takewondo event. One is bigger than the other. We go to the performance. We explain it to the kids. They understand.(Or at least they say they do...)
The other balance which is important is regarding the parents need for their time as well. I am not sure that a parent should miss out on something which they absolutely live for, which cannot be done at another time versus a routine children's event. Your kids know your passion. They also know you love them. Occasionally as a parent we miss stuff. Life happens.
I would ask for the child's input to help reach the decision.... An understanding child can give the gift of a guilt free trip to the parent and feel really good about themselves. Not very often that a child can get involved in decision making and also be in the position to give something to their parents. Kids are smart. They can see that their parents too have a life outside of just being a parent. My kids see this. They understand.
-
A couple great posts guys, definately some of the best out of this thread. I think Ice they'd be happy or wouldn't mind at all if I go hunintg. My youngest has even said you deserve it dad (this last week) coupled with a hug. However, I am alot like Steve. I think its more me than the kids. I am learning that I finally justify going hunting, yet when there, guess where my mind is at. It seems I have "wasted" alot of gas this last year committing to hunting, then making a midnight run off the mountain because I decided missing their gmae was just something I didn't want to do. You guys are getting a larger dose of Bone then you need. You are getting into the mind of a solo hunter. One of the hardest emotions a solo hunter has to deal with are these kind of things. I've probably missed a lot of sheds this last year, coming home early to see the hundreth basketball game. I'm sure its only going to "get worse".
Idabooner helps out a bit, but is also a good Dad and sits back and lets me come to my own conclusions. He sees me struggle at times out there when we are on our trips trying to justify me being away. Good thoughts guys. I enjoy reading your opinions and feelings.
-
Is this a hunting site or cosmopolitin. I'm sorry fellas but I love my kids just as much as the next guy but come on this is starting sound like a womens magazine article. Lets talk hunting! :P
-
I'm glad you are so manly heinze.....You should go get another 200 incher or 300 pound cub.
-
Is this a hunting site or cosmopolitin. I'm sorry fellas but I love my kids just as much as the next guy but come on this is starting sound like a womens magazine article. Lets talk hunting! :P
let's talk hunting??? naw, lets just continue to criticize everything we read :bash:
-
Ahh did I hit a nerve Bone?
-
Look in the record books bone I dont shoot cubs
-
Iget in trouble all the time with the Mrs 400. You might as well too.
It comes with the territory! It's just how it is, the closer the season gets the worse I get :dunno: :chuckle:
-
Well heinz this is a family site! it Important to balance them out, It's tough but has to be done!
-
OK now... Heinz has a point... This is a hunting site.
But please realize that this thread has turned/changed subject, as many discussions do when the main topic has petered out.
How many of us though, have sat on a ridge top, not seeing what we expected for hours, then have let our minds wander off to thinking about the kids or wifey.. (Wives and mothers may be surprised what we do think about when we're sitting precariously on a fallen log or boulder at 7,000 feet in the pounding sun or driving rain looking down a 2,000 foot cliff to the valley below).
Like I said in my post. Kids are different. Parents are different. Some don't feel guilty about abandoning thier kids while we go experience our chosen passion. Some of us do.
As was said, there needs to be balance. Those that have imbalance are likely to have the kids that don't appreciate life or themselves become the troubled ones. I have a friend that lives for the outdoors. His kid is an absolute troublemaker. -Dad's never home!

I don't know......I think Austin Powers turned out pretty good? :chuckle:
I have to kinda agree with Heinz.......I mean, you have to think about us younger guys who don't really want to hear about the reality of our future lives. We (at least I) am quite content living in a current state of ignorance. :chuckle:
-
Well lets see hear if you want to really talk about kids. Why dont you involve your kids instead of trying to get away from them. Take them with you like I did. My son is the best hunter and shot I know at 16 yrs old-6 deer,3 bear 1 antelope numerous grouse-ducks-pheasant-coyotes. As for in school activities he was on the all star baseball team 4 yrs in a row which I coached one year as with the regular season team for 1 year. He gets good grades and and all of his teachers think he is a great kid. So I guess hunting doesn't make them turn out to be Austin Powers. He is my best buddy and goes with me every time. Try that and you won't have to miss them.
-
I do have to admit though I don,t think about the wife too much.LOL :chuckle:
-
Try that and you won't have to miss them.
I am truly glad it's worked out for you and your son. Doesn't quite work for everyone. Trust me, I'd love to have my boys with me most every time I hit the hills. But I do realize that they have their social network, sports that I don't coach or am involved in with them anymore. Baseball is a spring sport last time I checked. Not near as many conflicts with hunting seasons. (I have an Allstar Baseball player too)
Those of you that are not into Soccer must realize that there is no season. IT NEVER ENDS! You go from school to P2/P1 club team during summer and into fall, then on to indoor at night during the winter. And to compound things, my eldest is trying to get on a team in Canada. I'll have to tear apart and clean my damn truck to make sure there's no contrband inside. :bash:
-Steve
-
You didn't hit a nerve at all Heinze. I think its ignorant of you to think hunting doesn't involve family and thats how I took the tone of your statement. I don't expect any of you to relate to or care about my situation. Some do and its a conversation. This is sort of a magazine, if you feel its cosmo, well then pick up another. I bet I have added more hunting related material on here than you have, so I'm not too worried about what I contribute. If you don't like it, don't read it. Its actually nice to relate with other folks that might feel they have a similiar situation or outlook. I'm certainly glad your case has worked out perfectly for you, and I am glad you do realize family is important(my misinterpretation of the tone). Believe me, my kids are quite involved but thanks for the suggestion. Unlike some, I don't have it all figured out and am not egotistical enough to think that I do and have no problem listening to what other people think. I find their experiences important and interesting to listen too. Feel free to ignore me if you feel I am too cosmo for you and my vulnerabilities make you feel uncomfortable.
-
Hunting with little ones at home is way way more difficult than just the wife.
Im struggling with it right now.
-
Ain't that the truth. Not everyone's family and lifestyle is the same. Hunting is not necessarily done to escape kids and family. Sometimes it is perceived by the hunter as the activity pulling you one direction and the family in another. It is such situations which can force a hunter to make decisions which they may not have had to in times past because the lack of family ties or other responsibilities. For one simple example, I simply cannot take my daughter up into the mountains 8 miles on my back during the rain and camp for 3-5 days at a time. I don't believe having a measure of differing family accomplishments in hunting or life offers anything but negativity to the topic. I also viewed Heinz's response as nothing but an attempt at diminishment of someone else's experience.
-
Look in the record books bone I dont shoot cubs
That was in regards to your guesstimate on that cub in the other thread and your more recent dig on the score on the buck in this thread. Once again since I share most things, reply #71 has the official score sheet posted for everyone to see, mistakes and all. Some might appreciate all that I share. If not, again please ignore me. You should entertain us with photos, locals, stories of all your great adventures. It would be awesome to hear some of your son's adventures on here as well. and HEY, if he does something great in sports, put it in the general forum, or photography or something like that as this is a family site, we are a family here, and many of us enjoy hearing success and sometimes failures just like any other good campfire might yeild. I would like to see photos of the 200 incher and I even enjoy nice pics of does, spikes and two points too. How about a trophy room shot. Anything positive would be nice.
I agree sux. It also has to do with being selfish or feeling you are selfish when you burden other folks with your work, or the money you spend on and on. Having an understanding spouse helps, and even then there are responsibilities. Throw in a non-understanding spouse and thats a whole other cosmo article for Heinze to review.
-
I just can't figure out why someone has to post derogatory comments aimed at someone else's family life? :dunno: There are thousands of other posts to read. If you don't like a particular conversation don't slam the person for it, just move on to one that is more interesting to you. I also don't agree with the comments about the buck's size, there are score sheets for it and to tell you the truth I have bucks that don't score well at all that look way bigger that the ones who do score well. My best and most impressive looking buck is not the best scoring buck on my wall.
Don't just pop in and start slamming someone because their views are different and I honestly think that the comments in this post are perfectly suited for a hunting community. Everybody else seemed to enjoy the thread and there was a fairly pleasant conversation that I myself enjoyed reading because it hit home for me. I however took the time to read the other 15 or so pages prior to blasting someone about cosmo and the size of their deer.
My :twocents:
Carry on Bone

So anyway ................ :chuckle:
-
Thanks guys. I'll let you know if I go and shoot the darn thing, or if my kids clean up on the field. LOL Right now I am stuck at work with a nice hospital spot inspection. Not what I had planned. Then its basketball practice until 8 tonihgt, OK, now I am whining. :chuckle:
-
I am so retarded, this post kept poping up near the top of the posts so i opened it and started at the beginning, thinking "hey Bone got a nice buck again" took me 2 days of reading at work before i noticed that it was a very old topic/post..... :P, that got started up again.....
Nice buck from a few years back Bone...
-
LMAO!! Buckmark, you crack me up . I almost did the same thing, I was like holy crap 16 pages already and he just killed it :chuckle:
-
ROTFLMFAO!!! :chuckle: :chuckle:

So anyway ................ :chuckle:
Bucky you make me laugh :chuckle: :chuckle:

Ain't that the truth. Not everyone's family and lifestyle is the same. Hunting is not necessarily done to escape kids and family.
As the Cosmo Thread Turns!
As much as I love to get into the hills with and without the boys, My competitive shooting gets in the way of that and other family time. -Although I've taken most of the summer off from the circuit. (I know there are other rifle and archery competitors on this forum.) It's a tough balance! Sometimes someone gets left out.
-Steve
-
Now I know I have my priorities mixed up. I am stuck at work today instead of hiking in. Go figure.....and yes HH I am whining.
-
Priorities, priorities....I'm sitting at the dang computer and babysitting instead of hunting :bash:
Looksl ike late season for me ;)
-
I think he stated you are supposed to take them with you, so that is no excuse. Strap that little bugger on your back, hike 9 miles in, a couple thousand feet and bust one. I'll help you pack the animal out as you'll have your hands full withthe kid. Might rain today, so make sure we're all bundled properly. I have to go online...do they have mountain house Gerber? :)
-
Priorities, priorities....I'm sitting at the dang computer and babysitting instead of hunting :bash:
Looksl ike late season for me ;)
Its not babysitting when its your own kids right ;)
-
We teach the kids that if they start something that they need to finish/see it through. That goes for team commitments for the most part. Which means they don't get to go to the hills when there's a game or practice.
'Mountainhouse Gerber'??? Now that's funny!
I say, Don't feed the little bugger.. CRY kid! Cry all you want. :'( That'd be the best varmint/bear call ever. No batteries required.
Would that be considered baiting? :dunno:
-Steve
-
I have to go online...do they have mountain house Gerber? :)
If you find some, let me know. Tinypathfinder is already lobbying for me to take him deer hunting with me... I have a second deer tag this year, I think he may have to watch a whitetail doe take a dirt nap this NOV...
Good assessment Jack. I am of the same opinion regarding team commitments.
-

There are times that kids and hunting just don't go together. Example: a week long hunt in Nov with a nine year old when temps are likely to be freezing and camping. I try and take my daughter with me on every reasonable hunting trip that I know she will enjoy. If she is miserable she won't want to go next time. She is into it now and I don't want to ruin it so I always try to make it fun for her. Took her with me scouting and had to dig for fossils mid day and include a squirrel shoot to keep her interested.

I know I had to go buy a squirrel identification book to make sure we were hunting legal squirrels! :chuckle:

If I turn in Earshot for illegally hunting squirrels, do I get 10 points towards my Quality Bull Squirrel Hunt next year... I've got a P&Y chipper all scoped out in the Sinalehekin Unit and I was really hoping to draw the late hunt tag in 2011. I think 10 more points would clinch it for me... :chuckle:

Dang close to being a great Miss- Quote. "10 posts we have covered breast feeding with Rachel Rae" I had to go back and read what you really wrote, because this is what my mind wanted to hear.

Agreed. BUT, in all fairness, I think we may have successfully driven Bone out into the mountains for the weekend... :chuckle: I think the breastfeeding squirrels were too much to bear.

I did find a buck worth shooting today. Thats a step in the right direction.

Do you have a multi season tag bone? I thought you were stick and string this year. Hopefully he's in an area you can hunt late season. Got my last bow deer hunt in this morning, saw a small 2 point. Good luck in the late season.

THAT'S what we wanted to hear. Enough of this silly talk... go kill 'em...
-
You're correct PNW, I am stick and string. Not sure what will happen this late season. Gonna have my hands full with Nevada and camera. it was good to see one worth pursueing though.

By the way, this may be to "cosmo", but I ended up making the right choice. My daughter played the best game of her soccer life so far this morning. She scored two goals. She hustled like I've enver seen her hustle before. She dominated whereever she was playing. If I could say someone could have the perfect game, by any measure she really did. She passed when she should have, crossed when she should have, switched when she should have, and pulled the trigger when she should have. I can't imagine if I missed it. I'm pretty confident I'll still have a chance to notch the tag. Now its off to another soccer game, and then a basketball game. LIFE is good.
-
Pretty sure you made the right choice, kids are only kids for so long.
-
Had missed this thread, congrats on an excellent buck boneaddict, very nice.... ;)
