Title: Looking for tips...
Post by: yakimanoob on September 27, 2017, 01:28:56 PM
I'll start by saying my username is no lie.  I am very new at hunting in general, even more so with coyotes.

I've got a pack that lives near my 5.5 acres near Naches that I would really like to thin out / teach a lesson (I'm pretty sure they took one of my cats last winter).  I've had a game camera out and have tons of night photos of them, with no particular timing pattern I can discern.  Very few day pics. I attached a few of the most recent captures.  I've tried a few spots on my property and this one seems to yield the best results (and has the added benefit of a nearby vantage point).

I've still-hunted more mornings and evenings than I can count, both simply waiting still and silent as well as using rabbit and fawn distress calls, all to no avail.  I'm pretty confident the wind and light have been in my favor for the most part, and based on the game cams I think they're simply just not very active at dawn/dusk.

Hunting near a road and some other houses, so sticking with my 22 WMR.  I could use my 7mm-08 I guess but don't want to attract too much attention.

What should my next strategy be?  I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, and I welcome your thoughts and constructive criticism.  Thanks in advance!

Invite someone who is experienced and take them out on your property. You learn and the coyotes are encouraged to leave your property.

do you have to hunt on your property? Is there a place near by you can hunt? Killing coyotes within a couple miles will likely impact your property.

I've thought of that.  There are a few orchards nearby that have rocky sage areas throughout where I think they're denning.  I could reach out to the orchard owners and see if I could get permission.

Down load a catt in distress for your phone or borrow a caller with it on it. 2c

:) do that!(ask permission from neighbors) as for hunting/calling.  Sneak in and out of your stand, unless you shoot while on it. watch wind and light. sit 'in' the bush break up your outline. Call some other areas too.
5 acres is not a very big area. can you call at night? a shotgun works for coyotes a lot. keep trying.

Go sign on at the local dairy or beef farm and ask for dead cattle, set that up somewhere that you can put a tree stand up and you will likely do pretty well, and you can hunt at night, get a good red light and it's on

I've played with baiting, but I have dogs that I don't want to have to keep on leash that are very good at finding the bait...

I had not thought about a red light.  You mean RED, not infrared?  Will a red light not spook off the coyotes?

Take some of your meat bait and put in an old pillowcase or burlap sack and hang in tree high enough off the ground that it can't be reached.

Puts the scent up higher and allows it disperse faster.

And yes, a red light or lense filter....but infrared is totally cool also!!!!   :chuckle:

I'll have to look into the red light option.

How long do you wait between putting out the bait and hunting the area?  I guess I could put my dogs up for the night, then put out the bait and red light and wait for the coyotes to show up?  But then I'm not sure how I'd set up so the wind carried the bait scent to the coyotes without carrying my scent with it?

Coyotes will find it fairly quikly, especially if it is a little ripe to start.

As for position and wind, not knowing the layout of your area it is had to say what may or may not work.

Maybe use some coyote urine as a cover scent, added bonus is they are territorial and that will work with in your favor.
