O.K. after the BIG POSTS on the forest grouse opener...Who is all "out the door" for the upcoming QCH Opener this coming weekend 10/7/17?
-
I will be if I am not helping my bro on the ML elk opener. I haven't seen much for quail yet this year so I am tempering my expectations. Good luck out there all!
-
I should be out for the quail opener, Saturday only.
-
Probably won't be out for the opener, but will do a lot more hunting this year than last. Crossing fingers Sophie stays healthy and doesn't tear another ACL.
-
I will be out during the opener on Saturday. I just haven't decided to go for Quail or look for some more Grouse.......... I am hoping to have a better idea by Thursday. :dunno:
-
Absolutely. Hopefully Huns and Quail

:yeah:
Will be out chasing them around, numbers are great! Quail didn't do well with the first hatch, but came back strong and have seen 4th hatch on the farm. Hearing good things for both Huns and Chukar numbers as well!
-
Should be the best Quail season in decades. Huge survival in multiple hatches.
haven't noted chukar or huns. Id think theyd share the same success. I had lots of roosters around this spring but no hens. No babies in my neck of the woods
-
How wary should one be of rattlesnakes while looking for Q,C,H? Would it be better to wait for some colder weather? I have a one year old shorthair who's curiosity is a little high and I'd like to keep him around for a few years.
-
Put in 7 miles Sunday scouting, didn't encounter any. Haven't killed one on the farm since August, and it was 37° this morning, so I am thinking you should be pretty safe.
-
I'll be hitting chukar and quail this weekend. Can't wait!

A local bio told me that if you are in rocks you should find snakes. If you are in brush and sand, should be no or almost no snakes.
-
I'll be out all weekend. Morning and evening will be trying to fill my muzzy deer tag, and upland during the heat of the day.
-
I found some good spots for some quail. So my mind has been made now.
Excited to get the boys out with me.
-
Stay out of the rockslides and rimrock and you should be fine. We froze night before last and it's been much cooler. Now if you see a snake , you'll probably find a hundred of them if you know what I mean
-
Thanks for the snake info everyone, I'll be out there as well. Best of luck to all.
-
I will be out for Quail tomorrow and will be bringing my pup on his first hunt. I can't wait!
-
gonna be windy here for the weekend.
-
gonna be windy here for the weekend.
Its always windy in Moses Lake. Or so it seems. I take the family up there to see the wife's parents, all the time, and it always seem to blow more in the fall and winter.
Good Rock Chuck shooting up there though.
I haven't had the opportunity to any real hunting up there.
-
No opener for me but i really cant complain because my dad took my 10 month old pup to Eastern Montana to chase Roosters so that experience will be way more beneficial for her! Cant wait to hear how she does and to hunt over her myself in 2 weeks
-
Not like this windy.

Like watchout for that twisting rolling wheelline windy, be careful out there
-
Never trust a weather report. The winds were last night and died down. Looks reasonable for the remainder of the weekend. Originally it called for gusts close to 40mph.
-
Went out for a couple hours. Wind was blowing hard. Dog pointed 5 coveys. Of course I missed all my shots. Buddy ended up dropping one bird. Gonna hit it again tomorrow and try to redeem myself.
-
We (dog and I) got a limit of grouse and 2 chukar on the back way home
-
Was pretty windy in most of the spots we hit today, but my 7 month old pup got his first retrieve on a hun today! It was awesome to hunt with him for the first time.
-
These guys did 20 miles and found a few in 30-40mph wind, called it a day at 10 due to heat.
-
17 miles myself on a full day. Cannot imagine what he ran. He is chukar tuckered
-
His proud birds
-
Nice looking dogs!
-
Went out this AM. No wind sure help. Got 5 birds

Plenty of Chukar and Huns today! Dog averaged just over a covey per hour. Large coveys too.

Was in your neck of the woods today. Great conditions eh! You see any Huns? We hit a huge covey...
-
I went out this afternoon with my labs, yellow is 1 year old and he did great! The black is his mom, and she is sure something to watch! We limited out in no time, and they even put a nice rooster up in front of me that I had to watch fly off. They looked at me in confusion lol.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171009/e86838e22cd2b6c1a4d3dc91d7141e34.jpg)

The wind was pretty bad Saturday :yike:. The boy and I didn't see anything, except a herd of deer.
-
The wife and I hunted the Swanson Lakes WA on Sunday. I love the Big Sky/Empty feel of the area and try to get up there several times a season. No Huns or quail seen or shot, but I guess at 65; I don't go hunting just for birds anymore. We did hear a couple of shots and for that area saw more vehicles pulled off than usual.
Unfortunately, my Springer got into the nasty burrs. However, Tanglefree Hair & Mane spray is a WONDER and with it; the burrs came right out and a pre-walk/hunt spraying works even better at burr prevention.
Bad news... At 8 years of age, Walter The Wonder Dog tires rather easily these days. I see more short, local hunts in the future.

I'll be hitting chukar and quail this weekend. Can't wait!
How'd you do?

Hunted chukar Sat and got skunked, heard them laughing on top of a 100' cliff face. I'll be back next weekend for revenge. Got Some dove though. Shot 5 quail Sunday, took a buddy who is new to upland with a new pup. He got his first quail over his 7 mo. wpg
-
Great pics all, thanks for posting!
-
A few more...love the 28ga Beretta.
-
18 chukars and two huns for my friends and I today. Not too bad for not having a dog. Can't wait to get a GSP!
Just as a heads up, saw a ton of snakes yesterday.
-
Wow, that's a nice haul!
-
Holy heavy load! Marty would love to see that full Mother's bag. Keep it coming.

Looks like some great hunting and looks like lots of real estate is being cover which is always good to take a couple of birds from multiple coveys.

what county did you see all the snakes?

Kittitas County

Hopefully the rain stays out so I can hit "the hole" tomorrow. Doesn't look that way though.
Merkle, only snake I seen here has been a bull snake.

If you ever need someone to tag along i have a new 10 month old lab that Id love to get out as much as possible this year, also have some private ground thats good phaesant hunting we could hit too
-
Took out a few partridge family members before the rain showed up at noon today.
-
Finally got into some chukar.
-
Great pic John B.
-
Went to an old area that used to hold a lot of huns, but got skunked. Basically a nice armed hike. Great to get out and get my setter and I some exercise though. Got to use a new 16ga hammer gun that I finished working on also. It's a Husqvarna mod. 100 hammer gun. Best chukar gun I've ever owned. Choked ic/xf, drops them at 50 yds.

Was planning on heading east this weekend for the pheasant/quail opener, but it's supposed to rain all week. Sigh...
-
Gents,
just a warning. There are still plenty of snakes out in the desert areas. Was surprised to see them.
best, jackson
-
Finally got into some chukar.
You take the advice?
-
The red legged devils are everywhere this morning.

You lucky dog.

Here Chukar Chukar, HUN! Raising the heart rate just a bit. Great day so far. Dog is pretty tired. Elk hunters kinda not helping today, but still shot a limit. Tools of the trade!
-
Quail hunting's no fun. My daughter and I tried our hand at it during MF deer. Saw some off a spur road. I stopped the truck and went up the side of the hill, wondering where my daughter was. I missed 3 shots. Not sure why my daughter was sitting in the truck still, as I could see her gesturing to me, wide-eyed and yelling something. Turns out that her door was blocked by some tall brush. Oops! Bad dad!
We never got any quail that trip, but it was still fun. She caught a 15 inch Brown trout that afternoon!
-
Sophie and I did 2 miles this morning +/- 500' elevation gain and was enough for her. She can't do much anymore and I don't want to push her. She had fun retrieving birds and is tired.

She still looks like a young one!

Went out shooting at quick gray blurs in the hills yesterday and today, got two chukar each day. Did some missing and my lab/gsp bumped quite a few. He did make some nice points, so did my buddy's spinone. Mostly low flyers with the dogs in the way, but still a great day!

Pre Thankgiving harvest.
-
More pics.
-
Nice Job!
-
Gotta love the days of seeing 200+ birds and hearing many more while carrying the wrong weapon to hunt them with.
-
A few more partridge that won't be making it back to the pear tree. The dogs are looking back at some Chukar singing their tune.
-
Nice job!!
-
The dog and I ran into 14 coveys of chukar yesterday ranging from 15-40 birds. It was ridiculous. Best day I've had in the spot this year (only been up there twice this year) and know where I'll be focused all next week unless I can still get to another honey hole. Not hunting this weekend as I don't like to increase the chance of giving spots away.
Here's the final bird of yesterday.
-
I like it! On the big coveys, were there multiple flushes or did they all go at once?

Not many stragglers. They seemed to all flush at the same time.
-
Small snipit of today’s adventures. Had a new Chukar chaser with me today.
-
#50. Also got #51.
Going to go do some scouting and go to another spot I haven't been to in a while. All fun from here on out now that I met my goal on the year. Hopefully I can find some huns this week. I'll have to go to another zip code for them though. Not too many around here.
-
I’ll see your Huns and raise you a few. What a great few days. Dog rocked the field today. Love the new 28ga. Carry on Naches...heee heee!
