Thought I would start a thread about the upcoming season. Anyone been out scouting? Excited to try out any new gear? For me, I plan to scout this weekend and I am looking forward to trying out my new breathable waders. I think the dogs are ready for some duck action too!
-
I refreshed the decoy spread this year and should be getting a new bang stick in a couple of weeks. We went out on the youth opener and the dog was remarkably better despite the fact I haven't really worked with her, so we're good to go.

What kind of scattergun are you looking at?
-
M3500 although I whiffed at a chance to pick up a better gun for the same price at the WWF banquet last Saturday.
-
I was out scouting on Sunday. There are a few snows around already. Duck numbers are pretty low still.
-
All residential ducks around here, some high flying geese starting to come through though.
-
Water level just started creeping in on my property yesterday. Counted 21 ducks on the place yesterday. Nice flock of honkers just flew over the house. One goal this year is to shoot a duck and a goose from the deck. Just went out and counted 40.
-
I just picked up my 18 mo old chocolate lab from training this weekend and she's more fired up than me although presently sleeping on my feet in the office. Now I need to get her birds, birds, birds this year.
-
my first scouting trip will be Thursday. I have one pond I watch often as it's visible from the road. I saw more ducks on it this morning but don't know if they just flew in from another pond or they are beginning to trickle down. Last year the early ducks were down here by now.
-
New avian x mallards to tryout this season. I also have seen a slight increase in ducks including a flock of woodies at a local lake (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171004/723f014247e23bb89814e9e8ed717524.jpg)

Local geese are thick around Sultan, don't know where to hunt them though. :(
-
Oh yeah, Scoters have been thick for a couple of weeks around Decatur, flocks of 200+ birds.
-
Man am I looking forward to it. Will be hitting some of my local flooded holes for the opener as they all are holding a lot of birds right now. Take out the locals, then move down to potholes area for the second opener.
-
I went scouting for a bit last Saturday. I am glad I did! There was no water in the area I was hoping to setup in on opening day. I am going back out to make sure plan b is good this weekend.
-
I am going to finish brushing the blind and do some scouting as they are starting to cut corn up here. Haven't seen many ducks yet and after early goose the honkers have moved.

More water then for the last 4 or 5 yrs :IBCOOL: Seen a few during muzzy deer

Nice. I was out Saturday and found one spot that had few hundred geese and probably 150 puddlers. Wind was whipping so it was fun to watch them fly. :chuckle:

You going to be chasin ducks or deer Sat???
That's one of those little tullie reed slews out in the sage brush country southwest of town, it hasn't had water in a long time. Lots of little ponds like it around this year and most of the ones I saw had atleast a few birds on them. Can't hardly wait for Sat, me and the dog are both pretty antzy to get started. During muzzy deer season he couldn't understand how dad could dress up in camo and grab a gun then not take him...

Ducks. I was muzzy deer hunting, and now im waiting on late season as I wasn't able to find a buck. I will be out tomorrow in the Swanson area looking for huns and quail, while scouting out all the new water holes for ducks to jump shoot Saturday. My GSP will finally be happy to get out tomorrow, but I don't know if I will take her for ducks. You ever need a partner, let me know.

Hunted hard for 7 of the 9 days saw a lot of does and a half doz or so 2Xs but saw probably the biggest muley I've ever seen in that area, he had to be atleasta 4X, horns out past his ears and twice as tall I'd say he had a 30" spread atleast but spotted him just topping the rise on a canyon and never was able to get out for a shot. Went back a couple more times but never found him. Still got an elk tag so packin the Hawkins just incase something shows up close to the road before Friday that I might be able to try and sneak on. Retired and turned 66 this year so would like to get one close to the road cause we all know once you pull the trigger the fun ends and the work begins. Most of my old buds have moved on so hunt the ducks and geese by myself nowadays. If you see this white Ford parked along the road you'll probably find me close by. Going to put a lot of days into the ducks and geese till it freeze up. I don't have any wheat fields to hunt but really like the small ponds and close to the road. If you're by yourself feel free to drop by and join Chase and me. He's no TV dog but I don't lose many birds with him.

By the way if you're out by Swanson check out the west end on the west side of the road. Looks like good water back there kind of hard to jump shoot but you could get some good pass shooting.
-
If you see this GMC out there, then myself and GG are somewhere to be found as well. I've seen a lot of the ponds out there in Swanson, some have blinds on them as well. I think it will be a good early season this year.
