Terminal cancer. Tough to see for anyone to have to deal with something like that, but this young lady...man it's tough to comprehend being a kid and having to deal with this.
This is some of the story.

Awesome bull..... I will say this for wdfw....they provide a unique opportunity for those that truly deserve it. My buddy was given a terminal moose tag a few years ago and it made him a happy man even though he was dying.

Oh my God, that just bumped this story to a whole nother level. That is just too sad to hear.
-
This will be a hard story for me to tell. Partially because I don't like to write stories, but mainly because how amazing this was.
Started with a call from a buddy that had been contacted about helping with this hunt. I quickly inserted myself into the crew. We began Friday scouting for her moose hunt that was to begin on Sunday. We called in a few bulls and thought we had located a good bull for her that we would be able to relocate. Fast forward to Sunday afternoon. We met up with Jayda her dad and the whole posse from Ephrata. Quickly made introductions and hit the range to check the rifle. After that we head to the spot we had scouted. Checked a few cameras and saw we had a few bulls that had been in the night before. We would hunt them the next morning if not successful this evening. We headed towards the drainage that we had called bulls a few days earlier. Stopped and glasses a few spots on the way with no luck. I kept telling Jayda not to be worried because moose are a better animal to hunt in the morning. Boy was I wrong.

Thanks for sharing, Ben. It's this kind of stuff that puts things into perspective and should keep us grounded. You're a hell of a guy for helping out.

Man its been 7 min dont leave us hanging lol. This is awesome congrats to her on 2 fine animals. Sad story but this is great rhat she was able to experience these hunts

Congrats Ms. Jayda!! Awesome bull!!

Continuing on we came to the drainage that we had called the bull in on Friday morning. It was a big drainage where we could also glass the far mountain ridge while we called. We stopped the trucks and got out to glass and do a little calling series. As soon as I finished the first set of calls a small bull stood up across the drainage. This of course got all the Ephrata boys excited. After calming them down I walked around the corner and called again. Thinking I heard a bull grunt I came back around the corner to get Jayda set up if this bull would commit. I kept calling and now we had 2 Bulls calling and seeming to get closer. Excitement levels are getting pretty high at this point. Probably the loudest moose hunt I have ever been on. 12 guys and a 90 lb girl standing next to two pickups in the road. Not exactly stealthy.

:chuckle: that’s great! When karma is on your side, nothing matters. Fun!
-
About 10-15 mins of us standing there and saying "did you here that, he's getting closer" one of the Pend Oreille crew yells softly there is a giant bull on the ridge. After calming down and is asking for what seems like 5 mins he was able to point out where he has seen the bull on the opposite ridge. We can only see one paddle but he was in the sun and it looked huge. At 770 yards you could see him naked eye and know he was the bull that we need to call in and get Jayda a shot at. The bull began to move along the top of the ridge to our right. This story is gonna get confusing but I will to my best.

Realizing that we could not shoot from where we were set up. And with a lot of people whispering and moving. We decided to move forward into the drainage with just Jayda, her father, and a video guy (close family friend) and myself. After looking at a few spots to set up we chose one that we could look across the valley where the road had cut back (approximately 200 yards)and we hoped we could direct the bull to. We continued to call for about 20 mins, only able to hear the bull because he was on the top of the ridge in front of us probably now 500ish yards (left the range finders with the crew). He was now working away from us to the right but we figured he was just working his way down the hill. Bulls are way easier to call when you do not have pressure like this on your shoulders.

So freaking cool dude!
-
Congrats to jayda and you for helping out like you did.
Prayers also sent her way and her family
-
As he worked down the ridge to the right he finally turned downhill towards us and we started to get glimpses of him again through the brush on the side hill. Not wanting him to go further down hill I moved way to the left of Jayda and began to call the bull. He must have read the script because he hit the road and began to work directly toward the spot directly across from us that we had set up for. He needed to work about 200 yards along the road on the opposite side hill and he would be perfect for the shot. Still wanting him to move to the left and not down in the ravine, I told Jayda and her dad that I was going to go to where the road cuts back and call him across the hill and call, but that if he got to the spot we had talked about to shoot him even if I was not back to them. But inside I was hoping to be back to witness the finale of the hunt.

I walked up the road to where the road cuts back, beating a lot of brush with my paddle and grunting a lot. One final cow call from the corner and I knew he was committed to coming. I beat feet back to Jayda just in time to watch the bull come out from the brush across the draw. He needed to go about 10 more yards and we would be golden. I can hear Josh (Jayda's dad) talking her through the shot. She is seated in a nice fold out chair with a sturdy tripod shooting stick in front of her. After watching her shoot earlier in the day I was not worried about her marksmanship. The bull began to move and I told her I would stop him as soon as he cleared the brush. The bull stepped out and stepped on his own and she made a perfect shot. The bull humped up and stood his ground.

Jayda reloaded like a pro and put 3 more rounds all within 6" of each other right in the boiler room. The bull soon tipped over and then the excitement and emotion took over. We could hear the whole crew cheering. The bull had stopped in the only gap on the hill where they got to see the whole thing. Again I am not an emotional guy as many of you know but this has been the best hunting and one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I feel like Jayda family. She will never read this but I love her and think she is an awesome young woman.
Lots of pics and video to get through only cell phone pics today, but I will get more pics and video soon. This young lady is proud of her bull and wants everyone to see her bull.

Thank you very much for sharing, I have a young daughter and this story has brought tears to my eyes. Everyone needs to send a prayer for this young lady, I asked God to spare one miracle for her. I will be sending wdfw an email in appreciation for doing this.

Ben.... you are an amazing hunter, community builder and moose whisperer. I'm lucky to have got to meet you in person and see your passion for hunting first hand. That girl has had a rough hand dealt to her but in the final moments she's got to take you on an adventure of a lifetime. Great work pal. That bull is a brute and the type of animal that grown men dream of.... I'd be tickled if that girl gets the record.
-
Wow, great story and congrats again to the huntress on a fine job. Benhuntin you made this even more of an incredible story and hunting journey for this young lady than what she'd probably thought was possible. Great job bud!!

What am I missing? What did wdfw do to make this happen? Sounds like a story there somewhere..........
Terminal cancer. Tough to see for anyone to have to deal with something like that, but this young lady...man it's tough to comprehend being a kid and having to deal with this.
This is some of the story.

The current state record is 183 6/8 so if this moose doesn't shrink more than 4 3/4 inches (I think) when it is dry it would be the new state record. Very impressive animal, good job Jayda and helpers.
-
Congratulations Jayda!!!!!!!!!
-
Great Story Ben! Congrats to her and the whole crew!!!!
-
That's awesome! Beautiful bull for a beautiful girl! Congratulations on a great experience most will only get to dream about. That bull wont quite score out the way you have it written in that score sheet Ben. Those two abnormal points will actually count against his score but if your other measurements are accurate than she's still got a chance at the state record. That would be icing on the cake. Congratulations again to Jayda her family and all involved.
-
Not to worried about the score. But it would be cool. Good point on the abnormal points.

Quote from benhuntin, "Not to worried about the score. But it would be cool. Good point on the abnormal points."
benhuntin, the score doesn't matter to me either, I only posted the information because of the title of the thread. I think that it is fantastic that she got the opportunity to get a moose and had great help and a successful hunt.
-
Well done Jayda!
