Just got back from Muzzle hunting in the Bumping. Tag soup for our group..... some bulls were still bugling but would not come to the calls.
More concerning is we found (with our noses) 2 dead elk (5x1 and a spike) about 100 yards off of the Bumping road and about a 1/2 mile apart. Could clearly see what appeared to be a hole in the chest of the spike.
My camera is also in the area,... and attached is a pic of the 5x1.
Last year we found the remains of a spike that was shot at 2:00am (I was awake and heard the truck and the shot) right down from our camp on the Bumping road.... Report it = "No response".

There are some decidedly UNsportsman like individuals frequenting the area. The best defense of our reputations, resources and game is eyes open. No tattle tales here, but all facts and evidence turned over to LE.
Plus the added bonus of draw points if you actually help catch the !@&$¥%! We found three whole carcasses in the Natchez unit last year during modern. Right off logging roads, been chewed on a bit but obviously down for a month or less.

If it wasn’t for Oregon state police doing their jobs. That ring would still be out doing what they did. WDFW shouldn’t get a lick of credit for that bust. That was all Oregon that busted that case wide open. Just my :twocents:

2 of the 7 have 60+ charges pending. Such a waste of life, it's disgusting that people like this get away with it for years. Take pictures, video record it and brag about it.

Anything is possible I guess,.... but ,.... both animals were less than 100yds off the paved Bumping Road,... in fact the 5x1 was only about 50yds off the road......

Also,.... the whole GMU was closed due to the fires to all (except residence of Gooseprairie) during the entire Archery season......

Someone may have been guilty of not looking hard enough for a wounded animal, (or not), but that doesn't make them a poacher. I wouldn't jump to conclusions without more info or facts.

Road was closed for archery. Was the road closed for muzzy season? So rocket scientist. Tell me how long does it take a animal body to decompose in the weather we had? Again your jumping to conclusions. Not every animal you find 50 yards or 50 miles off the road was poached. What would the likely hood of an elderly man shooting it. Bull runs off. He tried what he could to recover it but couldn’t. Instead of plastering the forum about possible poachers. Why not post hey I found two dead elk during muzzy season on was a spikex5. Maybe an honest law abiding hunter would contact you. But nope let’s go and blast about poaching. Cause this state isn’t getting enough attention on that already. :bash:

I don't understand the resistance to reporting to WDFW on this forum. I realize that (hopefully) its just a vocal few who have had bad experiences with, but ill report anything I deem even remotely suspicious every time. Its not always poaching, but the reason the clowns in OR got away with it for so long wasnt because they were mastermind criminals. I value my hunting rights and the lives of these animals too much to even bother with second guessing my decisions to call.:yeah:

P.S. I think I know that bull; I watched him all winter at Oak Creek feeding station. No matter what happened, it's a real shame to know he rotted... :(

Follow-up: Received a phone call from the Fish & Games folks yesterday thanking me for the Report I posted. Nice Fellow ... told me they don't get many reports from that area.
I was pleasantly surprised as I didn't expect to hear from them.

i found a doe on private property this August that had been shot twice in the shoulder, no exit wound and less than 24 hours old. called it in and was told I would receive a call from a warden in the area so I could take them to it. never got a call...

Ive found around a dozen dead bulls in the bumping unit alone. 5 had arrows near the bones.

I still say call it all in. This bull was found opening morning of muzzy deer in the colockum. Archery elk had ended five days before, muzzy bull permits started that morning. This bull had obviously been dead for a day or two. Head tied to a tree and covered in branches. Maybe it was an archery guy that just hadn”t made it back for the head. Game department seemed pretty interested to take a look.Kinda odd scene to walk upon in woods...
although that has got to be 1 of the longest running jokes in most camps. "hey Andy, next season I ll tie it to a tree so you wont miss" or "Dad's so old, I would have to tie it to a tree for him to see anything."
If it seems off or odd nothing wrong with letting those who get paid for such to take a look...We've been fed as a society to look the other way for a long time...
