Hi everyone.
I've got to the point that i need to upgrade my rain gear and i would like to hear from you guys what you use for your backcountry hunt.
-
I use old school Sitka Nimbus jacket and pants.
-
Depends on the expected weather. If September or early October and lighter rain, I just bring my Marmot Precip jacket and pants. Lightweight and easy to put on and off.
For late October and November hunts with heavy rain and snow, I go with the Sitka Coldfront top and bottom. Heavier to pack, but extremely waterproof. And lined with thin fleece to keep the warmth in better.
I also have some less expensive Rivers West camo gear that is waterproof and holds up well that I sometimes pack if I don't feel like lugging the heavier Sitka gear along.
Regardless of which gear you buy, getting it dried out every night in the backcountry is critical or you're putting on wet gear every morning..... :twocents:
-
I used Kuiu Chugach last year seemed to work fine always felt dry. :twocents:

how are you getting your rain gear dry? i think ive accomplished this maybe 10% of the time...

I use my tipi with stove for the late October and November hunts where I know heavy rain and snow are expected.

gotcha. jealous..

Kryptek Koldo pants and jacket, only downside is the helmet sized hood otherwise couldn't be happier.
-
Thanks for the all replies, currently i have cabelas mto-50 gortex and also i have Browning set which is super lite . MTO-50 is a little bet heavy for my taste but the Browning on the ather hand is not durable at all , my pants got shredded after two days hunting in a heavy brash. I'm looking for durable/lite set like firstlite/kuiu/sitka or any ather brands, just dont know which one is better, or should i get two one for open country and one for heavy timber.
-
Kuiu chugach. Never been wet
-
I have Kuiu Yukon pants and I wear the gators as well. I hunted in Westside blacktail country several times last year and never got wet. Best rain gear I've ever worn.
I upgraded from the Cabelas MT050 stuff. That stuff was good while it was, but when it failed, it failed miserably

Kuiu chugach. Never been wet
Are they quite?
-
Stay away from First Lite. I'm disgusted at the quality of the pants that I own (merino wool) and their customer service was frankly revolting.
-
Anything breathable leaks at some point, and anything super lightweight tears. I have Kuiu and Sitka right now and it really is all a trade off, love my Sitka cloudburst but a little heavier than my Kuiu. Have the chugach and the Ultra NX, Ultra is very light but not too durable. Chugach is a good balance of light/packable/durable but did soak thru after an all day downpour with pack on last year. And most all high dollar packable stuff I've had is somewhat loud at best. Always looking for the unicorn though. Right now Sitka is my overall fave
-
Kuiu Yukon pants and coat, great stuff.
-
KUIU Chugach. Like all quality, breathable rain gear it is loud but keeps you dry and breathes well

Bummer to hear that about First Lite. There's no excuse for bad customer service. Period.
I'm getting a bit jaded on the idea of merino wool in the first place. It's a great material, don't get me wrong, but for most hunting (and most outdoor sports) applications, it's just simply not durable enough.

Yep. I drank the Kool-Aid for it, and I'm paying for it. Once these pants are ripped up enough (bought them this summer, will have 5-6 patches sewn on by the end of this hunting season) I'll be going back to Sitka. Althought Kuiu is getting a lot of love on this thread.
-
I have the first lite boundary Stormtight pants and they have been awesome. No water at all from days on end including busting brush. My north face jacket... not so much.

I once forgot my rain gear.
A storm front came in and i hinted with big black garbage bags between my long underwear and camo.
It was a little noisy but it kept me dry.
Mostly. :chuckle:
-
Has anyone tried or know anyone that has tried this gear? Their warranty seems top shelf. Prices aren’t bad either.

I've had great experience with First Lite cust.service,no complaints.
As stated any rain gear that is breathable will soak through eventually. If I'm just sitting for a long time in heavy rain I will usually pull a syl.nylon poncho over me and my pack

Kuiu chugach for me, been excellent. Also have run there ultra light rain pants and was very impressed.

You're not the only one who has had to do the "emergency garbage bag poncho" trick.

Kryptek koldo jacket with arcteryx leaf gen 3 bibs . Durable waterproof and comfortable.
-
First lite SEAK and Stormtight pants. They rock but I live in the rain. I have 2 seasons with the jacket using it 15 ish days hard hunting through brush and it looks new. The storm tight pants I have a small tear by the ankle from hurdling deadfalls chasing a bugling bull. They keep me 100% dry but are not a warmth layer if your hunting later in the season.
-
+ 1 on the First Lite SEAK Stormtight and Boundary Stormtight pants. It's a bummer others have had terrible service with FL, I've nothing but good experiences all around.

Kuiu Chugach

I was looking at these. Thought they may be a lil loud?.... thoughts? Thx
-
They aren't loud, I have used them for archery elk several times. I prefer them over the thicker stormfront I own both, the pit zips are a lifesaver on the cloudburst. The cloudburst set actually stays in my pack all the time including backpacking trips.

Fwiw, my Cabela's MT 50s failed slowly over time. Trying to save a buck, I clean them well and treated them with a topical waterproofing spray. They are as good as new since the spray treatment. I will upgrade one day, but at least I'm not wearing leaky rain gear in the meantime.

The original First Life Storm has treated me well. I purchased the Seak in their asat closeout sale. It looks bomb proof and not too heavy.

Someone needs to buy this jacket and let us know how it is, it’s only 800.00. It’s from OR and built for the military. Pants are the same price.

yep !!! Bought the wapiti all weather pants and coat they are lifetime guaranteed and they worked flawless for the 3 days of crap weather during modern deer!!
I will be out all weekend wearing them up high in the snow and give them a true test but so far they are my favorite of all

Built for the military makes me laugh, the wet weather gear they give us is trash made by the lowest bidder.
-
Pants- My Under Armour bids are in their second season and I am impressed, no lining but they are roomy enough I can get a couple layers underneath. They use Goretex for the WP. Lightweight if you are packing them.
Jackets- I have several jackets I could pack depending on temp.
-
Kuiu Chugach
:yeah: And they dry quickly even without heat. In no heat back country wool base layer and chugach outer is a winner - sleep in the base layer and the chugach dries overnight ( or in an hour or so usually). The mid layer is a challenge to dry in no heat tent but if you control your venting and pace you should be able to keep it dry with the chugach.

Anyone have experience with the cheap kuiu teton gear?

check their site friday first thing might get a set 40% off.
-
Cabelas Instinct Backcountry Barrier jacket and pant look to have really good features and the lifetime guarantee if they don't work out. $500 for the set is steep but if you keep your receipt even if they break down in 5 years they will replace them or give your purchase price back to you. And the new O2 octane camo is not bad either. Seems like it will be on the loud side but hunting in the rain is generally loud anyway.
-
I've had really good results with my prana pants...this year in idaho in the snow they where bullet proof and never absorbed moisture..I wore them blacktail hunting and it took 5 hours of rain and packing a deer out to get them a little wet. For a jacket I just wear a McKinley H2O jacket..just a shell, taped seams and completely waterproof..it's been bullet proof as well. I've stopped buying into the big hunting clothes companys, to expensive.

Anyone have experience with the cheap kuiu teton gear?
I have the Yukon set, the chugach pants, and the Teton set. The Yukon set is the heaviest and most durable. The chugach is still fairly durable but is light enough to be packable and worn over another pair of pants. I have never worn the Teton set, But it is extremely lightweight so I question it's durability. So far, everything I've worn from kuiu has been outstanding. Kuiu rain gear is not particularly quiet but it will definitely keep you dry. If you're interested in the Teton set I'll sell you mine. Size large, pants still in packaging, both never worn.

Thanks but I would need a bigger size
-
I’ve got the Kuiu chugach and Teton sets. I keep the Teton set in my day pack at all times during early season, as it’s so light I never even know it’s there. I just use it for sitting out the occasional September rain squal. The chugach comes out as the season gets later. Late Archery it’s chugach everyday.
And like a few others, I’m done with Firstlite. Everything I’ve bought from them has fallen apart (even the Red Desert boxers) and the customer service is crap ( in my experience at least).

KUIU Yukon jacket and pants when the weather looks truly awful, but I'm wearing it all day or my entire hunt. I don't just keep it in my pack as it's heavy. I have their Ultra NX set for packable rain gear but treat that much differently. If not wearing my Yukon, i.e.. decent forecast, the Ultra NX comes out when a September rainstorm occurs, and I wait it out. I don't move through brush with it, it's limited to hiking trails, gated roads, etc.. while it's on. Never been wet with either. Like the Yukon for cold wind too. I wear the top a lot in MT (average 2.5 weeks a year hunting in MT).
-
I'll be going on year 5 with Sitka cloudburst.

Old German flecktarn military surplus bibs and jacket.
Gore Tex, camo, & cheap!

There are some great values in milsurp gear these days. I use Danner ICH milsurp boots ($100 new on Ebay) for backcountry hunting and they definitely hunt better than the $300 Scarpas they replaced.
For rain gear I have the Kuiu Chugach set and have been happy with it over 4 seasons of general season backpack hunting.
-
Kuiu Chugach...so far been very happy and dry wearing it

Just got my KUIU Yukon last week. Pretty nice stuff.
-
FirstLite Seak is amazing. They are coming out with the pant this year.

Not stupid, just wet :chuckle: I like being dry. Actually being wet is one of my least favorite things on earth.
-
and could kill you backpacked in if cold. No thanks, good rain gear means no extra clothes and I am dry

Cabela's Space rain for just in case
First lite storm tight for when I know it's gonna suck.
Space rain packs the size of a baseball and they have been on sale pretty cheap.

Kuiu Chugach

The military surplus Gore Tex is the best I’ve ever tried and it’s tough
-
Kuiu chugach. Durable and light, best of both worlds. If it was little to no chance of rain or on a tight budget the teton raingear is super light. Never worn it but my buddy does and likes it. Carry a roll of tenacious tape in your pack in case you get a rip. That stuff patches up any kuiu clothing reall good.
