Title: What do you shoot
Post by: sisu on March 03, 2007, 07:00:07 AM
I used to shoot a Compound old school Buck Skinner, but gave up on compound and was looking for the recurve limbs for the Buck Skinner. When I could not find any i bought a recurve, Thnunderbird 55#, made by Jay St. Charles. I shoot wood arrows with two blade broad heads for hunting. I practice about 8 months a year with it as an instinctive hunter, which I might add has transferred over to my shotgunning for ducks, pheasant and other fowl.
Anyway lets here what you guys and gals, if there are any on the site, as to what you shoot.

In recent years I've been enjoying bowhunting with my 55# wooden yew longbow, "Mr. Snappy". I fire arrows out of lots of different bows throughout the year, but as I get close to big game season, I string my old friend.

Although Mr. Snappy is a so-called "traditional" style bow, don't look for any "one kind of bow" politics from me. I make my own choice purely on the thought that its currently the bow I most enjoy hunting with. I assume everyone else has made their own choice for the same good reasons and wish every hunter their best day in the woods with whatever they choose to hunt with, gun and bow.

I shoot a 50# Tred Barta longbow. I also have a couple of recurves that I have hanging on the wall.

Uh, anything and everything.  I started out with a recurve many years ago, then rifle hunted for a few years until I came back this time with a compound.  Never did very well with it though.  So I picked up a longbow.  To me I just feel deadlier with it in my hands.  More successful too.

After messing up my elbow a couple years ago I bought a compound again.  The weight reduction at full draw helped .  But things are always changing so now I'm headed back to the longbow - elbow now healed. Needless to say I have a few bows to play with.

To make this long story short, I just like bows and always have to try something new or different. When I get a new one I love to tune it until it's perfect.  As mentioned before it doesn't matter  what somebody shoots. The person behind the bow is far more important.  It's all fun.

Hoyt makes good products. Seems like there are never enough good archery shops around. Who do you look to for your service and questions? 8)

Yeah i am very happy with my hoyt.  Me and my buddy got 06 models and then our other two friends jumped on the same boat and bought hoyts.  There is only two archery shops by me and one of them is absolutely awesome.  Family owned, friendly and has lots of options to shoot.  Indoor range, outdoor range, pop ups, and 3d targets.

I don't fit into any nitches.  I shoot a compound instinctively.   Started with recurves in the 60's but went to compounds for their flat shooting.  Currently shooting a Reflex Highlander at 45#.  Can't shoot heavier because of a stroke a few years back. :dunno:  Love hunting predators.

Niches are overated.  Good for you for keeping up with your shooting after the stroke.

I have been a Hoyt boy the last 6years,but just picked up a Mathews switchback this week. Great shooting bow. I have hunted and harvested animals with many different tpyes of bows from fast overdraw equiped bows to a recurve I made in high school. The first elk I ever killed was with that old recurve I made, still have it to day but cannot shoot it because of a twisted limb.I just keep it around for memories. My way of thinking is that all bows are good shooters in the right hands. RODGER

I shoot both longbows and recurves of the glass persuasion. Also I shoot selfbows and composite wood bows of my own making. Always in the 44-49 pound range. Which bow I take huntin on a given day depends on what has been shooting well for my in the last few days. I try to shoot 3-4 times week throughout the year. My good luck that there is an indoor range within a couple miles of me. The outdoor winter shooting here can at times be brutal...
Here are couple pix of one of my osage longbows:

I shoot a 70" martin cougar m-41 it's about 10 years old but it shoots great. deer die the same non-trendy gear. however i recently purchased an old 40# pearson recurve and plan to learn it and get something in the 55# range. traditional stuff is cool.

Welcome yakimaarcher, noticing your handle, do you belong to any of the local clubs or go to their shoots?  I don't, and haven't, but am thinking about checking them out if anyone had any info.  about the different clubs.  I think there are about 3 of them within range of my home but wouldn't know which one is better.  I was hoping to get my girls involved in shooting at them as well.

I don't have any pictures of my bow but for the last few years I shot a Martin Mamba Recurve with cedar arrows. It is a blast to shoot but takes so much practice so I switched to a Reflex Compound with an alpine quiver, carbon arrows, magnus stinger broadheads, copper john site.

I shot a 02' Hoyt Ultratec. Just got into the archery thing and am loving it. My bow is set up with Spot Hogg SDP, Trophy Taker drop away rest, and Hoyt stabilizer. I am Easton Excels with 85gr Thunderheads. Can't wait for my first archery kill. I had a buck at forty yards Saturday broadside pin set just behind the shoulder, but he wouldn't turn his head so I could see if he was legal. Had to let down (arm got tired) and he jump behind a bush and disappeared. :bash:

My bow was ahead of its time and now like 10 years old but Ive gone to the bow shop twice money in pocket to get the newest greatest bow and just cant find anything worth the 700+ new bow cost.

I shoot a 32" PSE Stingray compound. Its a 78 pound draw but 85% :IBCOOL: let off. Great brace height and still pretty fast! I have shot the Carolina whisker biscuit for 7-8 years and may never give it up. I trade sights as often as wives (often) and the 3 pin stacked pin trophy ridge aint making me happy. Ill probably switch to a 5 pin regular pin set up with a 0-20 yard tritium pin.

I shoot the Easton Axis Sti arrows and think I love them after 2 made a clean recovery after a 2 mile ride in my 5x5 bull unscathed! and as always, the Thunderhead 125's. Ill keep them until I find a strong fixed blade with a much bigger cutting surface.

Ive looked at several Mathews, I came closest to buying a Bowtech Tribute in 80 pound draw...and a good deal would still tempt me.  The speed of the PSE x-force is good but the brace height isnt very forgiving for hunting purposes.... but thats just me.

My 10 year old PSE has killed dozens of deer, dozens of boars, tons of small game, and one Western WA 5x5 elk. SO, its gonna be hard to say goodbye.

I shoot a Parker Hunter Mag.  I picked it up 2 1/2 years ago when I wanted to start bowhunting.  I didn't want to spend a ton of money since I wasn't sure if I would enjoy bowhunting (I am now addicted).  I enjoy this bow but I have not used very many others to compare it to.

dont think anyone hunts with these old onieda bows anymore, but it works for me and the whole thing only costs me 5$. it only fires at bout 240fps so its pretty slow compared to most. the new ones however are way nice, but they cost round 700$. havnt killed with it yet, came close this year with a bull i called in but my friend had the beter shot. maybe late season ill be able to get a cow or somethin.

Im gonna buy either Michelle's bow or buckrub's bow this year,

anyone have personal experience with a test between the PSE X Force and the Bowtech Guardian.

Either way it will be a 80 lb set up.

Just looking for a good comparison. Not sure how fast the guardian is but know its let off is much better. I know both have decent brace heights. I know the Guardian is supposed to have very little hand shock...how is the X Force?

- Ive seen the videos for xforce online but just trying to decide if the hand shock and let-off are too much of a factor.

Love the idea of closer pins due to arrow speed... love the idea of a ton of kenetic energy... but I would hate to give up the 80% let-off Ive grown very used to.

Thanks for any tips

I have quite a few PSE bows (from an old PSE Polaris to a couple of newer PSE Mach-11 target bows) I also have an older Martin Tiger, a Newberry B1, a couple of Recurves and 2 Lakota bows ( a Lakota Bigfoot target bow and a Lakota Oglala Hunting bow) (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi20.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb218%2Fgrandpawrichard%2FmynewLakotaBigfoot2.jpg&hash=2c7b36e5ae6749d26eb2efd637ea098039e7a357)

My wife just made me buy a new bow ;). I bought a Bowtech 82nd airborn. I still have my mathews that I've been hunting with for the last several years. The Bowtech shoots so much faster it's not even funny. My Mathews was bottomed out at 67lbs. The new one is set at 65lbs. The only reason I don't go higher is cause I'm too cheap to buy new arrows. The 400 axis will not fly right if I go any higher. When I lose or break the ones I have I will switch to 340's.

Barely started shootin it.  Seems nice.  Price was awesome especially since I also had some gift certificates... only cost me 190 out of pocket. My overall experience shooting bows is pretty limited but it seems noticeably better than the other bows I've shot.  It has some nice features like machined limb pockets, Teflon cable slide, etc. that you normally find on more expensive bows.  Seems like a good value.  Better hurry though.... I hear that numbers are started to get pretty limited since they're a closeout.

Bowtech allegiance..314fps...80 ft.lbs. of kinetic energy....HHA optimizer 5119 single pin calibrated sight,,,Robin hooded a Easton FMJ the second day I had it..from 30 yards in I'm shooting quarter size groups.. At sixty my groups are the size of a tuna can..At 43 yards last year my bull took three steps and collapsed dead..As far as sound goes it is allot quieter that all my friends Bows, That was coming from them..the only knock I would say  is they tent to be less forgiving, so If you have a bad habit or two you may not like the results....Here's some food for thought, If you don't have time to range your shot  or range a limb you didn't see-or missjudge the range buy say ten yards...  Your still in the kill zone ...If I put my single pin sight on 30yards. I'm 4 inches high at 20yards and 4 inches low at 40yards, Both shots are still in the kill zone even on a deer..As far as kinetic energy goes velocity is in that mathematical equation twice mass once?? I think most people would be happy with 80 ft lbs of kinetic energy?? :twocents: :twocents: :twocents: :twocents:

I'm almost certain that you're kinetic energy calculation is more than 100 ft/lbs off... Unless you are shooting a 1280 grain arrow at 314 FPS.....try this place.

I shoot a 07 Hoyt vetrix. Fuse 2 piece quiver, fuse stabilizer custom Hoyt/fuse sight, fuse whisker biscuit. It's set at 85lbs with a 30" draw,I average 297 fps. I shoot easton axis arrows with blazer's and wraps with 100 slick trick magnums for a total of 516 grains. I'm a huge fan of kinetic energy and I have no problem blowing through anything. I had a 06 supertec set up almost the same way just alittle lighter arrow.

The Mathew's DXT had me interested but I can not find a shop that has them, anyone know of any? After the test I saw last year of the top 4 it looks like Mathew's is the most honest of them all with there numbers almost spot on to what they claim in the brochures,no other company even came close to what they claim.
