Since I mainly hunt small water, My wife got me thinking about Kayaks.
At 66 I am getting tired of getting up at o dark 30 to get a field spot.
I have a regular 16 ft boat. But it isn't really made for duck hunting comfort.
Plus if you live in Skagit you know Mother Nature has a way of blocking my favorite launch.
My wife has been asking for a small craft to paddle around. I came across a video on the new H 12 Asend kayaks.
I suggested I buy one for hunting with the blind setup. She could try it out and if she liked it, I. Would buy her one.
Than I would sell the 16 ft in the driveway which she hates.
My only concern is I dearly love hunting with my dog. Not sure how to get her back in a kayak after retrieve.
The rear compartment is big enough for her. Maybe the front too.
Anyone hunt a dog out of a kayak?
Let's see your set up.

I hunted a dog out of a canoe and he dang near sunk us... never again.
I've hunted out of 2 different lengths of Aquapods pretty sweet.
I have a short Brown kayak I have yet to take out for duck hunting.

I use a NuCanoe. Almost like a sit on top kayak. Good option for dog, decoys and gear. They are also made in Bellingham, so you can check them out.
-
I have a Final Attack otter. Floats, stable, hunt with a dog and steers like a tank. But you can mount a trolling motor on it.
-
I also have an aqua pod and a marsh rat, but the NuCanoe is easier and quicker to paddle. Better glide across the water.
-
My son and I hunt out of these two sit on top. These two kayaks were designed for fishing but we make them work for hunting. A dog is not doable in these two kayaks. After you camo them out with natural vegetation they look pretty good. His is a Lure brand and is a tank very stable. The thing weighs over 100 pounds. It is a chore to paddle in the wind or against current. Mine is an ocean kayak that is faster but not as stable. Unless you are accessing some terra firma be prepared to spend a lot of time sitting in the kayaks. The Lure came with a nice adjustable comfy seat. The ocean is doable with the addition of a seat cushion. Breaking Branches makes an angler paddle that has a notch cut out of one paddle. This is a game changer for retrieving decoys without having to reach out to grab them. Austin Kayaks is where both these were purchased. They will ship for free however you have to pay the shipping if you want to return. This is why I kept the ocean kayak.
-
How do you get in them?
Sit down and swing legs or step in?
-
I would think some manner of sit up top would be the best if you thought you were going to get on and out very often.

I watched a YouTube about the ascend also. They looked like a good idea if you hunt a lot of small water. I considered getting the H12. If I was gonna do it I'd run my dog out of a dog stand. Momarsh comes to mind as I already have one. That way no messing with dog ladders etc on a kayak. Sounds like a good way to take a bath.

Well I don't think I would get in and out a lot my general mo is to get up against the reeds and shootout the side of the boat.
I have been searching the net for video of guys hunting dogs out of a kayak. Not finding any. There are guys transporting dogs to hunting areas in a kayak but none retrieving to and from the kayak. I guess its why guys use kayaks so they don't need dogs. :dunno:
I have a good 4 year old dog. And I can teach her in a day to ride in a kayak, and she will go out no problem. Its the getting her back issue I need to work out.
I am 90% sold on the Asend, mainly because I think my wife can handle it too.
My other hold up is I am trying to decide to order one now, because the Olive color is on back order or to wait till spring when I would have lots of time to work the dog before the next season, out of it.
-
I hunt out of my Ocean Kayak Prowler 13. It is meant to be a sit on top fishing kayak. My boat is not big enough for a dog but some are. Look into various fishing kayaks.

Is there anything about the prowler you would change? Are there other kayaks you would choose instead knowing what you now know?

That's because you hunt with those behemoth Chessies, and those giant labs are just as bad... get a nice svelte Golden Retriever and they won't be tipping your canoe over. ;) :chuckle:

I have a 55lb lab. I manage her weight. And I think I can hunt her out of the right kayak. I hope.
We will see . I ordered a H 12 today. And once I get it ,I will go to work figuring out how to retrieve my dog. I have a dog ramp ,but it maybe too heavy for the yak.
I am looking at a couple others.
I gave sit on tops a good look ,but It seems you have to be wet if you run one.
I think I can stay a lot dryer and warmer in the H 12.
I may not get the dog thing worked out this season ,but I am confident I will be running my dog out of the H 12 by next season. We will see.
I am hoping my wife likes the H 12, so that I can have two. But if not will be searching for a yak for her before spring.
Than I am going to give someone a good deal on a 16 ft aluminum boat and trailer.
-
Looks like a great boat

Sorry for the late response ...
I love the Prowler for what it is. Light, fairly nimble easy to paddle kayak that will get me to my spot and allow me to retrieve ducks.
If you are looking for a kayak to use as a floating blind and/or bring a dog with I'd recommend looking for a SOT kayak over 32" wide. The Prowler is only 27. Fortunately many of newer fishing kayaks are going to wider more stable boats.

Forgot about OP's real question. I don't hunt with a dog, but there is a zippered place for your dog behind you. And as I mentioned before, incredibly stable. The only way I've been able to flip it was to sit with my legs in the water and bounce really hard 2-3 times. I stand up bass fish all the time in this boat.

I ordered a H 12 Asend. They are 34 inches wide. Should be here around the 14 th.
I got the Olive green one. Will buy the blind for it next year. I am hoping my wife likes it. Because than I will buy another. Thus during duck season I will have one for a hunting buddy to use.

How about ad ons. Anyone add anything after market?
Lights? Ect.
And what about paddles? Man there are a lot of those to choose from.
I ordered a 250cm paddle because the reviews on the H 12 said a longer paddle worked better.

I’m curious to hear how this works, been thinking about a small kayak to throw in my boat for duck hunting some of the shallower tidal areas. Just anchor the boat and jump in the kayak cuz like you said, launching the boat at obscene hours to get a blind is getting harder to justify.

So here is a question.
Do any of you guys have wives that use you kayak during the summer and can they handle them ok?
-
Anyone use a bed extender to haul their kayak?
-
Yes ... the wife can handle the Prowler 13 on the water no problem. It is a bit challenging for her to load and unload on her own.
I know several guys who use bed extenders and like them. I transport on a roof rack.

Get the wheelez beach cart with the large wheels. They aren't cheap but work great on everything from soft sand to large obstacles. I've even stacked two kayaks on top of each other and it held up fine.

We use a micro trailer to haul our kayaks. It sure makes loading and unloading a breeze. Found it on craigs list a few years ago. The Feel Free lure kayaks come with a wheel built in on the stern to help with transporting to the water.
-
I have a Iron Panther utility trailer to get to and from the launch.
Thinking I should get some sort of dolly for my wife to use.
For you guys with kayaks is there any must have gear besides the basic stuff which you take?

Spend the extra money on a good paddle. The cheap ones are awful if you have to go more than a couple hundred yards.

I bought this one. Came today.

Not past buying another one if it doesn't work out.

If you rattle can one of these plastic kayaks does it stick well or does it chip off easy? Wife got a couple Costco kayaks from a friend for free and I may have to modify one. :chuckle:

Not sure. But there are a lot of YouTube of guys doing it. Or making covers for them.
I ordered mine in Olive green. And they make a bind for it.

I've spray painted plastic barrels with the paint made for plastic, seems to do reasonably well. It does scratch though so I would probably paint it then make some kind of fabric cover to help reduce scratching.
-
Let us know what you think of the H12. Price tag is a lot less than the nucanoe. Hard to beat functionality on the nucanoe though. If I hunted a lot from a yak I'd probably go with the Nucanoe.

Planing on interior lights this weekend. And maybe a maidin voyage if weather clears up a little.

Well it's official. Got the new H 12 on the water today and got the wife to take it for a spin. She loved it so there will be another on on the way soon.

My yak came with a black cord leash. Attached a sling swivel to it.
Gun stays in a float soft case down the left side when going to or from spot.
Once dekes are out and I am hidden the gun goes on the leash.
Going to get the yak gear Ambush cover for it.
But using couple grass mats for it right now.

Well my wife's / hunting buddies to use kayak arrived, busy setting it up.
Interior lights, ropes, paddle ,holders, dry bags. Almost ready.
Picked up a c tug too.

Your age will determine how you transport. I am 66.
I do both.
I bought a bed extender to Cary one in truck. Nissan.
I bolted 3/4 saddles for 3/4 inch conduit down the top rail of my utility trailer. Run 5 ft conduit across to other saddle the lock with Allen screw.
Covered conduit with pipe foam insulation tubes.
Holds two kayaks.
Easy on and off.

I toss mine right on top of my 4Runner Bone. Roof rack and some ratchet straps, good to go. Boat only weighs 65# or so. You can go way lighter than that, but then you start sacrificing stability, which is not something I like to do when hunting ducks.

I always transport upside down directly on the rack. Be careful with ratchet straps during the summer. They can tighten too tight and cause deformation when the plastic gets warm.

Well truth be known half of them belong on the other. My wife can out fish me any day. But she hates taking them off the hook. So it goes like this.
I launch her and by the time I launch and paddle over to her she has a fish.
So Icome along side take it off the hook for her.
She re bates , and by the time I get the first fish on a stringer move 20 ft away, she has another.
And I repeAt all over again.
If she breaks a leader or something she uses my pole while I fix hers.
So as a reward I get to carry the fish. :chuckle:

Well I am still young enough to get the yaks on my trailer. But the wife wanted some way she could load without much muscle. Also she pointed out we are not getting any younger.
I ordered a hydraulic lift and a buddy made a bracket so it would fit in a stake pocket.
After I messed around for awhile with different sling options, the wife and nurse figured I had suffered enough and figured out this sling. Since she uses lifts like this every day lifting people she knew exactly how to do it.

For you guys with the Ocean Kayak, did you take a look at the Malibu? http://www.cabelas.com/product/Ocean-Kayak-Malibu-Two-XL-Angler-Sit-On-Top-Kayak/2256948.uts
A little late. I got this in urban camo second hand. Paddles well single or double, stable enough and fast enough through the water, and tracked straight enough in a 12 knot headwind with whitecaps. Biggest downside is 14' and about 100 lbs., so loading/unloading and hauling is a chore. I would buy another. Only fished and paddled out of it, though.

The H 12s are 76 lbs with out any gear in them. That's about as heavy as I would want to go . The H 10 is 55 lbs so almost 20 lbs lighter.
Don't really care for the sit on yaks. Feel like a bobber on them.
The H 10 still has a payload of 400 lbs which I like.
Put a lift on my trailer so when I am older I can still load them. Turning 68 this year.

Do you have a link to the interior lights that you have on your Kayak by any chance? Really liking the idea of having them on a remote like you have. Do you have a picture of your H12 with the blind setup for hunting?

I got the lights at Costco. But you can find them at most hardware chains. Lowes or Home depot.
They run on three AAA come in a six pack with remote and have 4 colors. Plus each light can be turned on by just pressing them.
I put hem under the gunnels with all weather double face tape.
The headlight comes from Walmart boating dept. about 35.00.

Well almost ready now. Been short on time to get started on ducks after three weeks camped out for deer.
But got some time today to get a little grass on the yaks.
The only about the yaks is I haven’t been able to take the dog. Got that figured out this year. Have a old pollywog dingy. Got a new MOmarsh dog ramp on it today.
going to tow it with the yak.
Testing next week.
Had a dry run with dog today . Took her about five minutes to figure it out.
