Good grief that's a cheap inexpensive rifle.

Are all these gun manufacturers trying to make up for the decline in revenue now that we have an R in office??  Seems like incredible gun deals have been the norm lately.

That is a great deal. I have one of these in 223 for Coyote hunting and it is a tack driver. Would make a great first rifle or Christmas gift for a kid.

You beat me to it.  I was just about to post this deal.  I keep an eye on Cabelas for rifle deals all the time.  I was already debating on a nice 270 or a cheap one that I wouldn't have to worry much about.   This made the decision easy   ...and at that price I'll probably still get the nicer one later  :IBCOOL:

How are the triggers on those? I'm tempted to get one for my daughter. But I've never seen one, other than pictures.

EDIT:

Note, this is the XP not the XP II so it does NOT have the accutrigger.

Even so, at that price, I ordered 2!

Thanks for letting us know.

For that price I'm willing to take a chance on the trigger.  It can't be any worse than my old Golden State Arms Imperial mauser 1950's 30-06.  :chuckle:

I have no use for a rifle with a bad trigger. Certainly wouldn't let my daughter use a rifle with a bad trigger. If it had the Accutrigger, I would've already ordered one.

Axis does not have the accutrigger, Axis II does.  That is the difference as I understand it.  There is no issue/defect otherwise that I know of.

I'm sure the triggers are fine but I like a light trigger. The Axis apparently doesn't have the Accutrigger, so as far as I know it is therefore not adjustable. I just don't want to buy it only to have to spend $150 on a new trigger.

You can adjust the trigger by cutting loops off the spring.  Do it one loop at a time until you get where you want it.  The come fairy heavy from the factory.

The original Axis may not have accutrigger, but can be a ok trigger.  I recommend anyone getting one look up axis trigger online.  You can cut as previously mentioned or use a spring out of a ballpoint pen to significantly improve the trigger.

Have you made this mod?  I've heard that in addition to lightening the pull, it also makes the trigger feel squishy.  True?

I was looking at Walmart rifles the other day and found a Axis II 6.5 CM with accutrigger, heavy barrel, camo stock and Bushnell 4-16 with parallax (still an el cheapo I'm sure) for $400.  It was a pretty cool rifle and I had to think about it for awhile....still am actually.  Did a little research on it and it seems it is a Walmart exclusive, nothing on Savage's website on it.  Cool little gun for sure.

The trigger is fine its just the springs that's tough. It's a heavy spring. The timney swap is quick and cheap.

The axis has been on my watchlist for awhile.  The timney is ~$120, but at $200 for the rifle and $120 for the trigger it's still quite affordable.  The trigger upgrade seems to get good reviews on YouTube and looks to be an easy drop in especially if you've tinkered with guns a little.  The trigger being heavy seems to be the only real knock on the axis.  I'm not a fan of the accutrigger, too much of an old school person and can't warm up to the design.

All my rifles have had to have new triggers or upgraded in some way. And I'm not talking low quality guns. Remington 700, Browning A bolts, Husqvarna, Weatherby. So this is not something that's unique only to the Savage Axis. For around $20 I can have a good trigger in the Axis. My daughter is 11, she just needs a light rifle and a low recoil cartridge. I think this will work. It only weighs 6 pounds. I've heard they're very accurate, and the 7/08 will be a good, versatile cartridge for her. I'll download it to start with, will probably use something like 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. If she's lucky and draws a good elk permit, or a moose tag, I can switch over to 120 grain Barnes, and a little more velocity.

A better trigger for $20?  Care to elaborate?  I asume a Timney can't be had for that.

The axis are very accurate, the ones I have owned were sub MOA if I did my part.  I have owned a normal 308 and a AxisSR in 308.  Only let them go because I am/was searching for a specific setup and they did not fit the bill.  Ended ups with an Savage Hog Hunter.

Really cannot beat the performance for price on the Axis, you get quite a bit of rifle for almost nothing.  Free spring from a ballpoint pen in your desk drawer and you got a much better trigger I want to say mine went from 8.5 to 6#.  If you want to get a better stock, boyds has laminated ones starting at $144 (were $99 a year ago, big spike lately) so you have a passable trigger, wood stock rifle with a scope for $300ish..  Most wood stock rifles I have seen are 400+min?  Or leave it in original stock and have a truck, brush, crap weather hunting gun that will fill the freezer on a budget.

FYI - buddy tried to get a 223 lastnight, site said in stock until he got to checkout, then nada, so they are vanishing fast.

Yeah, I learned about it on YouTube and did it to my daughter's rifle.  She was shooting about 1.2 MOA before and consistently under 1 MOA after (closer to 0.7 most days).  I wouldn't consider it squishy, but surely not as crisp as the Timney on my rifle.  It probably depends on where you are coming from, if you are a 1,000 yard precision shooter your opinion will likely be different than a normal shooter like myself.  It's a free mod, if you don't like it you can always do something else or even sell the gun for what you have in it.  It does the job nicely for what we use it for - a 250 yard youth rifle.  I would have no problem shooting it out to the caliber's max range and have thought about carrying it for my deer hunt as the youth version is so compact and light and would be a dream to carry.

For the price, we got a sub MOA gun for an incredibly low price.  For what you get, the value is incredible.

I have the 270 and got my son the 243.  The box mag is garbage.  But other than that, no complaints.  We don't shoot over 200 yards often, so for our purposes, the trigger and accuracy are great.  They are nice to carry around all day, and still light enough to shoot offhand when you are worn out.

I put the scope on my 22 and upgraded that.  Other than that, I think it will serve me fine for years.  My son's 243 retains the original scope and I have no plans to upgrade it - seems to work great for the kids.

I may play with the spring just because I'm curious.  But not out of necessity.  But again, I use it as a hunting tool and not into competitive distance shooting or anything...

Been wondering the same too.  My guess is they overbought earlier in the year, and probably have a bunch of inventory on the way for black Friday and Xmas.  They would need to unload a lot of this stuff to not compete with the future deals; or maybe this is kind of like a type of pre-black Friday bait...so people come back later looking for more deals.   :dunno:
With CNC, I can't imagine the actions and barrels costing all that much to produce anymore.

Plus im sure alot of it has to do with the out come of the 2016 elections, guns are not being bought up quite like they were a year ago, you look at the big companies and the earnings have been consistently down this past year.

My order arrived at the store and then they canceled it and shipped them off somewhere else before I could go get it.   :o :o

They are going to try and track them down for me.  I won't hold my breath.  I spent an hour on the phone today trying to get this resolved.

You can also buy $100 gift cards on eBay for $82 and some of the $20 off coupons work for firearms.

Yep, I’m that thrifty at times.

Interesting. Have you ever got burned on one? What's to stop someone from sending you a card with no money on it?

I got an email from Cabelas last Saturday notifying me that the gun was in, but I was away elk hunting all week so I haven't been able to pick it up yet, but will tomorrow morning. Hopefully it actually is there! I haven't received any cancellation notices so I assume it's still there waiting for me. I already paid for it so it better be! Does anyone know if they charge for the background check?

No charge for the background check.

They didn't notify me that mine was canceled, I just saw it in my bank account.

I believe that my problem is likely an exception and not the rule, but honestly, I am not the happiest customer at the moment.  The person at the Lacy store who has been helping me, however, was very polite and helpful.  Who knows, perhaps my order problem will be resolved.  If it is, I will update.

No problem at all so far and I have bought more than I care to admit.  I buy with a credit card through Paypal, so I have a couple layers of protection.  The seller has stellar feedback and they are always shipped right away.

I'm thinking they buy them in bulk from Cabelas at a 20% discount and then sell them for an 18% discount or something similar.  They will only sell you three at a time, so they obviously don't want competition on eBay.

When you get 18% off and then use a coupon to buy something already on a great sale, it starts to get downright affordable.

PastorJoel- according to the email I received from Cabelas I have 2 weeks to pick it up. Sounds like that wasn't the case in your situation?

We're happy to let you know that all of your order is ready for pick up as shown in the details below. Bring a photo ID and your order number to the LACEY RETAIL location within two weeks to pick up your order.

They can't explain why it was canceled.  My best guess is that this order got confused with a different order that I made that I did cancel.  I made it very clear to them when I canceled the one that I was not canceling the other, but they are human and mistakes happen.

If they can't restore my order I am hoping that they will try to give me a break on something else.

Well I'm here at Cabelas now and they can't find the gun I ordered.  :bash:

I checked my bank account online and the money was not refunded to my credit card.

I'll update this when I know more. They're still looking.

Hmmm...  I hope that they are able to work it out for you.

Ask for Chuck (if he is there).  He was the one helping me.

No problems, got it and going home now. Just really made me wonder when she went in the back twice and then said she couldn't find it. Biggest hassle was waiting for the background check. Took about 45 minutes. But overall pretty painless. First time buying a gun from Cabelas and I'd do it again.

How are the triggers on those? I'm tempted to get one for my daughter. But I've never seen one, other than pictures.
Just my opinion, but the trigger sucks. Timney sells a trigger for it for about $125 that will adjust down to 1.5 lbs.

Thanks. First I think I'll try that trigger spring kit for $15.95. It's supposed to get it down to 3.5 pounds.

I have some Savages with the Accutrigger, but I also have 4 with this trigger.

Clearly the trigger is not a high dollar one, but mine will all hold an inch or better at 100 yards.

I'd never argue against a better trigger, but a guy shouldn't feel handicapped if he went hunting with a stock one.

Let me know how the $15 option works. I was thinking about the 243 for my granddaughter. If there's no creep and it breaks consistently I'd appreciate an update. 3.5 is a little heavier than I like but I think it would be fine for her. Thanks.

Well I got my rifle today.  Was starting to wonder if it was going to show up at the store or not.  Never got an email or phone call but was told it was there when I called this morning.

First time I've really looked at an Axis up close.  I have to say I'm impressed with the rifle for what it is.  Considering it is an inexpensive rifle, it seems to be well made.  I'm looking forward to shooting it and seeing what kind of accuracy I can get out of it.  My only complaint so far is the trigger.  No surprise there.  I assume it is set so heavy for liability reasons.  Ill be ordering the spring kit soon.  Also planning on putting a better scope on it although the stock Bushnell would probably be ok if that was the only option a guy had.

Maybe we should start a "Cheap Rifles" thread??  I now have two cheap Savages, the other one is a semi auto 22 that is a blast to shoot.

Today I was able to pick up one of the .223 rem. that came available on Saturday.  Interestingly, it came without a scope.  The order clearly showed the XP model, which comes with a scope, so the store gave me a scope and rings.

I really don't want to get into it, but I have been very dissatisfied with Cabela's and their customer service.

After they made a different mistake with some ammo I was buying, and after several hours of trying to get things squared away, they offered to refund me via gift card but I told them that after the last few weeks and all of the problems I have had, I won't be shopping at Cabela's again.

I am a very patient person, but I will take my patience to Sportsmans Warehouse or anywhere else next time.

PastorJoel- sorry you've had bad luck with Cabelas. It's really been the opposite for me. I almost never buy anything there at regular price, but man do they have good sales. First, the Savage rifle for my daughter, $150, sure can't beat that deal. Just a couple days after that I noticed they had some polar fleece shirts on sale for $9.99. Ordered four of them, one for each member of the family. Picked them up from the store today, and as we were wandering through we saw chest waders on sale for $20. Bought one for the wife and one for each of my two daughters. They'll be great for when we go clam digging.

And when she gets it, she'll find out it's heavy barreled and say it's too heavy for me. Then automatically it's gonna become yours. :chuckle: :chuckle:
