You'll definitely be in great shape timing wise to rattle just don't let it be the blood bath rattle that needs to happen after the 16th.

Yes! Rattled in and killed some dandies there. Unreal what that unit was and is now. In the late 90's we saw 30 deer a day. A couple years ago I went 5 straight days without seeing a deer. Still killed a 156" buck however.

Aint that the truth! My dad and buddies have been going since the late 80s and says when they first started they would only see a few other rigs the entire 7-10 days they were there! We have a cabin over there now and get to spend alot more time over there and the deer numbers seem to be getting better again. When are you headed over?

It does seem like they are bouncing back. A little concerned about last winter though. Planning on the 14th. Maybe sooner if my heart can't take the wait!

My son and I leave for Idaho this Thursday. I just watched your Seminar video again and looking forward to trying some of your tactics. I've rattled for years from a tree stand with no luck so I'm hoping to rattle in a buck for my 11 yr old from the ground. Thanks for posting up the video 3nails!!!

I think you have got your trip timed real well! Keep the rattling toned down for the first few days.

Ah, the 2017 rattling thread.  Nothing makes me happier.

I will be out this weekend for the evening hunts (Idaho), starting each setup with a grunt set to catch any nearby bucks, then gentle rattling after a wait period.  3nails, any thoughts on that?  Congrats again on your massive blacktail- I hope you can follow him up with a masher whitetail!

I spotted a few bucks in a brushy draw yesterday about 200yards away and I watched them for awhile to make sure they didn't know I was there then I rattled and grunted. I could see they heard me and one of them just walked away and the other two just went back to eating. Is it just too early?

Hey WA hunter 14-

3nails may want to weigh in on this, but I will share what I have observed.  There is a big difference between the first week of November and the second and (especially!) third week.  When the behavior switches, you will notice it!  What has worked for me in the past is to just be out there, try rattling and grunting, and keep it up until "the switch comes on".

Best of luck to you!!!

Sounds like very good plan. Just make sure to wait at least 5 silent/still minutes before starting to rattle after grunting.

Pulled out some Mule deer sheds. Going to give rattling a try this coming weekend for some whitetails. Snow is already on the ground so some pre rut action should be kicking in.

Hey Jeff, have you ever put out a buck/doe decoy 10 or 20 yrds off to the side of you while rattling? Just wondering if a visual aid might help bring them in. I know on public land you have to be real careful when using decoys. Thanks for any insight.

No but I'd love to! The areas I hunt are too far in and steep to pack a decoy however. I saw on a video somewhere of a dude wearing a deer hat with ears stalking a buck during archery season. That could be interesting but probably not very smart during rifle season.

I'm heading to Kettle Falls area the 15th-19th. Never hunted the late hunt in the NE corner but have done that same time frame in North Idaho. I'll be pulling out the rattling antlers again this year, hopefully the timing is right for this area.

What's your Facebook where I can find this ?

I'm sitting and nervously anticipating the late archery season for blacktails here. We have 3 or 4 bucks coming in during day hours, but if that stops I may try rattling to pull them out a bit early.

The boy and I are heading out first thing Tuesday morn for Idaho. Hes 11 and passed Hunters Ed this summer and is super excited to be going with "the guys" to deer camp this year! Have a few good whitetails picked out from the trail cams all summer so hopefully he can connect with a nice one. Weather should be perfect, starting Monday snow predicted for a week straight.

I hope to hear from 3nails.  He's in Western Montana now and I'm headed there early next week.  I hope he and his party have had some luck!

Dropped my son off at a location where he grunted in a 3 pt and couldn't resist pulling the trigger.  :chuckle:  Meanwhile I rattled in a bigger 5x5 and got some great video. I may shoot a smaller one later but he was too small for today.

Rattled this guy in today. First White tail for me. I didn't see him until he spooked at 20 yards. He ran about 200 and I had a small window to shoot him. Also my first time rattling, Very fun stuff. Idaho buck! Thanks for all the tips 3nails.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171119/35a2cb90cc673886c9c427888ad1b580.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171119/8fe18aa8c9a92ec879c2e5c4993c5cb6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171119/52ade6965614b510a703b062ac4c1743.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171119/7aff54543bbc74e729c2fea4cca75b4d.jpg)

I grunted in a 4x4 a week ago last Friday.  Passed on him...but if I see him again he's toast.  :)

Just got home from Idaho this afternoon. No luck on the rattling for us but several guys in our group were able to rattle in a few smaller bucks they passed on but no bruisers. I was able to connect on a nice 3 point that came in looking about 15 min or so after a series of doe bleats. Not sure if he actually came to the call or just happened to be passing thru. He was definately cruising for does though

Yes. After 9 days of hunting I filled my tag in the last hours with a nice little 2 pt. for meat. I passed up around 20 bucks, a couple in the 120"-130"range and another in the 140" range. Looking for 160+ so I was more than happy to pass up those mid sized bucks and take the little guy. I'll have to admit it was easier to pass on those bucks having already killed a booner blacktail in October.  :chuckle:

I really didn't get the season that I had envisioned.  I had some access issues with land I had scouted and hunted in the past, and work has been too busy for me to get out for a full day at any one point.  I have to get out to one of my field sites in Idaho on Thursday morning, and I will be bringing the grunt call, antlers, and rifle for when the work is done!  I hope the cold weather will get them moving again.  The deer were locked down during Thanksgiving week- nothing moving in my area.

Good luck, those of you with unfilled tags!

I've actually seen very little rut activity this year.  Could just be since it's my first year back that I have not adjusted to minor changes back out here yet.  I've relied too much on past experiences and was not able to put in nearly as much scouting time as I usually do and it is showing up in my results this year.  Will have to do a much better job next year.

Where i was in Idaho there wasnt really a major rut activity, it was more of a slow gradual process which made it harder to notice. Would see a buck with nose up a does butt and a few hours later have a buck come in that could care less that there were does in the cut

So the story goes...
I was talked into, and given permission from the boss, to make a 1.5 day trip to Idaho in an attempt to fill my two unused NR DEER tags that failed to make their way onto a mule deer. I’ve hunted whitetails once in 2013 and rattled one into like 10’ behind me in 121.
I’ve paid attention to Mr 3Nails for the past few year just because obviously he gets it done!! So I borrowed my buddies horns as usual and 10pm Tuesday night found me trying to watch the 3Nails YouTube video without waking my wife up...no dice. Anyway i took in bits and pieces...I really just wanted a “how to rattle” refresher. So I got one...
Rattle, come in hard with the horns like they’re locked up, stomp, listen, repeat, be on your gun, always!!
So we got out there and set up camp and hunted a evening, it’s any whitetail so I figured I’d just creep around...no dice. Those things just disappear!! So I rattled twice that evening, bumped some deer and went back to camp empty handed. It was dark and 5pm and had just snowed so we drove around looking for fresh tracks. We drove for about 4 hours in the snow where people had been driving/hunting all day and....we failed to find ONE SINGLE PLACE where anyone got outta their rig!!
So we go to sleep, hear Bigfoot or aliens landing in the middle of the night, wake up to some guys revving their engine for hours before first light...then finally unloading their 4wheeler. We get up and realize that we didn’t have a plan. I said drop me off here and I’ll meet you at 1030. I see a deer at first light, it disappears, as usual. I walk up the (gated) road a little more, jump the same deer (doe) I think. I decide to head up a steep hillside, it opens up with giant trails. I think...I should rattle.
To be honest it happened so fast... I think I did a grunt, a tick, a tick, grunt, grunt, rattle (10ish seconds)...
.
.
.
Not sure if I heard something, I must have. But holy #*$& there he was, a buck deer 120yds away coming right at me, I was on my gun, safety off, just following him as he moved quickly towards me. I reckon I coulda stopped him but I didn’t, just BAM!! At like 30yds.  I was all like holy cow man did that just happen and...THAT WAS AWESOME!!
Just then I see a doe, his woman I reckon, standing atop the hill wondering what in the heck was going on so BLAUCH, she got it too.
So now the question is... what do I do with this newfound rattling addiction??!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH 3NAILS!!

Bump.  Hoping to see a 2018 Rattling thread.  Who's heading where and when?  Any one been seeing any activity yet?  Weather looks like it might finally kick into gear here in NEWA this week.

Hitting 117 Saturday. Never been so it's a quick scouting mission the day before to find the trails and sign and a very short two day hunt.
