Title: Wood Stoves for house
Post by: Odell on November 04, 2017, 07:52:09 PM: For the life of me I can't find the Virtual Campfire thread???

I'm in Bonney Lake, not in the Tacoma Pierce restricted zone, i'm very interested in a wood stove to heat my home. Where do I shop, what do I need to know?

I don't like the tinkling lol there's something very cool.about having an actual wood fire heating your home.

I'll have my wife look up the name of the outfit we bought ours from. They did the installation and two repair calls in the first year and then bailed on the free cleaning they offered at the 12 month mark. I wouldn't recommend them

Post by: fish vacuum on November 05, 2017, 06:35:35 PM: I'd start by looking up the stove shops in your area. Lots of quality brands out there. Even some of the more affordable stoves have a good reputation for functioning well with maybe less visual frills. Don't get a chinese-made stove.
The greatest stove in the world will disappoint if you feed it crap for wood. Dry wood makes all the difference.
If you Google "wood stove forums" there's 2 sites that will come up and provide you with hours of reading.

Post by: Dale Gribble on November 05, 2017, 07:18:12 PM: I installed a lopi liberty in our house this year, almost to much stove for the house but man it is nice to use, heats very well and controlled, extremely well built, and they build em over in mukilteo I believe. I bought mine used off Craigslist and did the install myself, you can buy all the stuff online or in stores you’d need like pipe and flashings and the like. relatively simple for the install if a guy has a basic knowledge of framing or building construction.

If you want a free standing stove take this man's advice.
Blaze king won't let you down.
Always go one size bigger than you think you should.

I just put a couple year old Blaze King in my house. Its a bigger stove, meant for a 2400 SF house or so. I stuffed it full and it burned for 9 hrs the other night. I woke up, opened the damper and filled it back up and it took off.

12 hrs might be a stretch...

That's actually not a bad price at all, a touch over my wholesale cost. Depending on Brand, you won't find it much cheaper, it's expensive stuff.
Look for used if your looking to save $$$, I see some good used prices on craigslist occasionally.

I had some real good dry maple last winter that I could get ten hours under the right conditions. That's the longest ive ever been able to achieve.

I ask because with old stoves 12 hours is no problem with average wood. I’ve used a few efficient stoves and it seemed to me that you can’t restrict the burn as much. I’m curious if my experience is accurate or not?

Heats this house to point of opening window, 1600sqft. Not certified of course. Bought a new one in the old house in 2007. Crap. Crap. Best I can come up with sorry. Replace baffles, replace fans, replace seals etc. No thanks, rather have baseboards. :twocents:

All depends on how big and what kind. The catalytic stoves can run on low for a long time.

I look at it like this. With a newer stove and dry wood, you can still throttle it down. But the smoke will burn in the top of the box causing more heat and cleaner emissions.

That said my brother recently bought a blaze king and he gets over 24 hours of burn time out of it. His stove is simply amazing. I was actually pretty happy with the 12 to 13 hours i was getting until he got his stove. Highly recommend you check out blaze king stoves.
