Starting to get excited. I have a couple more deer hunts and an elk hunt to do then all my time will be spent trapping.

Same here. I'll hunt muzzleloader deer, and than settle into trapping. Made some improvements on the fur shed this summer. Really looking forward to hanging out in there skinning.
Good luck

A rat and a mink.
-
Nice!
Have you guys ever tried any of the commercial mink lures?
-
we have but a beaver leg or muskrat carcass work best for us
-
Cool, thanks for the input!
Got 3 cages out with hind beaver leg in it. We'll see what happens. I watched 3nails YouTube videos. He said to get the pan about 1.5" below water.
What do find works best? Are you also catching some of them in swimthrus?
Only caught one mink before (in a bobcat trap :chuckle:).
Always wanted to catch more so I'm targeting them this year a little bit.
-
all the mink are caught in small cages. We set near the waters edge and cover the trap with grass so it looks like a tunnel. make sure if you are setting on a big stream make sure you wire it off in case the water comes up.
-
Thank you!
-
2 more mink.
-
Anyone ever had this happen? We hung a beaver in this tree couple weeks ago. The other day while checking it the beaver was gone and the tree was all tore up. The beaver was hanging a foot or 2 higher than where the tree is tore up.

Bigfoot didn’t like you in his area.

Yep that's what my prebait sites look like !!Looks like coyotes ring that low if it was way higher I would say bobcat
-
Jakeland,
that is about 4 feet high, I thought coyotes when I first saw it but I found bobcat tracks and two different sizes of cat scat. we were just wondering if anyone else every had them scratch it up that much.
-
Yes definitely!!! I hang my baits like 8-10 feet up and they shred the trees up
Cage time !!!!
-
JackLand
thanks for the info. I will try hanging them higher from now on. I set a cage at this spot today, we will see what happens.
-
I'm feeling you'll get a cat or 2 !! When I hang baits I use a gutter spike ( so I can pull it out easily for the bait) and I use a screw in treestand pegs to get up high it's super easy that way and just unscrew them when the bait is hung
Good luck !!!
-
Now if I can figure out how to catch mink like you guys :bash:
-
JackLand,
We had a hard time with mink at first, then we went very simple. Small cage 7x7x24 up to 8x8x24. set at the waters edge with either 1/2 muskrat or a leg of beaver. that's it and the location gets better after catch the first one. we also cover the trap with grass or leaves. inlets and outlets to ponds, any small creek road culverts and bridges. our best spot is a 20 foot long 1 foot wide ditch between two ponds we set the trap at the mouth of the second pond. We catch a lot of mink at that location both ponds have cattails and rats. We tried fish for bait at first but it did not work for us, also people say if the bait is stinky throw it out, that is not my experience if it has some stink it seems to work better for us.

A mink and an otter.
-
Nice !! The only trapping I'm doing right now is a nuisance beaver job
-
Rat mink beaver
-
Good catch. Thanks for the mink trapping tips.
-
Have you ever used duck for mink bait with success?
-
I have tried duck with no success. I am going to try beaver meat with duck feathers on the ground as an attractant
-
Beaver and a rat.
-
Thanks for posting the mink tips. Who makes a good mink cage? Pan or coni trigger?
-
Nice job so far this year!!
-
I prefer comstock style triggers.
-
We caught two more male mink today about five feet apart!!!
-
Nice work
-
Missed a mink today the door got hung up on some grass and did not shut all the way. Also had a swim through shut with nothing in it, not sure what happened there!

Maybe a mink. Eric had a mink get out of a funnel trap when I was with him. We measured the round hole it escaped through 2 1/4" across. I think they can probably squeeze out of 2x2. Small rats can get out too. Large ones can't.
-
That's what I was thinking Bruce, it wasn't to far from the cage I missed one in. The one mink I caught yesterday was in a comstock 1 1/2 inch wire but it was a huge mink.
-
Nice job on all the Mink. Are you guys catching all these Mink in the same area you have trapped in previous years?
You would think catching that many would knock the population down a little but apparently not.
Keep up the good work.

Catch most of them in the same areas every year. I think the last 3 years we've caught about 45 mink and I bet only 5 of those have been females. Trapperguy would know for sure. Females must not travel much and unless you set right on them you just don't catch them. If we were catching a lot of females I think we would worry about over trapping them. But since it's 80% or more are males we don't really worry about it. That's just been are thinking on it. We could be wrong.
-
Cultusman,
I am not exactly sure but at least 15 of those came from the same trap or one set right next to it.
-
Also I bet 30 of those 45 came from two farms five miles apart. Lots of mink in this area but it does seem some creeks are way better than others.

Do you want to sell that trap. :chuckle:
-
I bet it's not the trap, but the location!!! Wish I could find ten more just like it!!!! It's a twenty foot long One foot wide ditch between two ponds. The bottom pond is mostly cattails and after that pond the ditch flows about 500 feet then into a river. Above the trap is a pond then another small pond then more ditch then a five acre lake. So everything coming off the river comes up that small ditch!!! Like I said I want as many more of these locations as I can find!!!
-
Couple otter today.
-
Nice double on Otts !!!
-
Nice job on the otters
-
Looks like two nice ones
:brew:
-
Couple of mink and a beaver.
-
Nice job !!! How's the fur looking on the mink still ? We're officially done for the season :bash:
-
I put everything up today still looked good. Last year we caught several mink in March up to the last day and we did just as good on them as are other ones.

Hmmm... just maybe then
-
Another male mink today and Friday was a big male otter!!! Getting close to the end!!
-
I saw an otter yesterday and was trying to remember how prime they are this time of year. How did that otter look; did you skin him yet?
-
I've caught otter in April and even in early May that the leather side looked great. Singe really starts to show late like that though.
-
The otter looked great, last year I caught several mink the last week of March and they averaged as good as my other mink.
-
3 beaver and a rat today.
-
Nice!!
