Title: Eastside Rendezvous: Cats and Smallies
Post by: walt on March 04, 2009, 05:41:29 PM
Hey all, I'm starting a new thread now that we have a weekend and a place picked out.  It looks like June 5th-7th at Lyons Ferry Marina. Here is a link:
http://www.portofcolumbia.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=40
Here's some more info from the other thread:

As far as participants here are who I see so far from the other thread:

SpokaneSlayer & family
Kbyers
300UltraMagShooter
buckhorn2 and grandson
shoot-em-dead
KillBilly
TribalDragon911 and kid
Me

maybes:
Gamblin Guy
Gutpile
lamar_hunter
pathfinder101
Michias and family

The Marina is very family friendly with a store, restaurant, and docks to fish from.  There is also a state park across the river at the mouth of the Palouse.

Da Stump has offered to help set this up so feel free to pm him or me or post on this thread if you have any questions or suggestions or just want to say hi.

Also post if you are bringing a boat and have any open seats.  There are also lots of places to fish from the bank, especially if you don't mind driving a mile or two.

Anyone familiar with the area please feel free to post suggestions for gear, techniques, to do's, must see's, don't forgets....

We will get a potluck list going when we get a little closer to go time and have a better idea who all will be there.  This should be a great time, hopefully mother nature smiles on us.  Who else is in?

Hope you guys dont mind another wetsider hoping to make it, have to see what my son's baseball schedule is before I can commit to anything.  Sounds like a good time, he'd really like to get into some cats.

Wouldn't fried catfish be on the menu?

Count me in, my wife might come but we will see when things get closer so I may have room in the boat. Do you have a map of where this place is? And do I have to reserve a spot if I live in Cheney or is it close enough to drive?

I don't have a map but if you head west to Ritzville then south on hwy261 through Washtucna it will take you there.  There is a left turn about 5ish miles south of Washtucna where 261 splits off of 260.  There are signs for Palouse falls state park and I think lyons ferry.  Stay on 261 until you hit the river.  The marina is on the south side.  You will see it from the bridge.  It is probably just over 2 hours from Cheney.  If you mapquest "Joso" or "Lyons Ferry" or "Starbuck" one of them should work.

I live in Cheney on the weekends, at least I have for the last year and me and Da Stump (my dad) went down this last June and it took us about 1.5 - 2 hours from Cheney towing a boat. You would want to stay, part of the fun is going to be camping. Smallmouth will just be starting to turn on also along with walleye.

Hope to see you all there.

Gear that I like to bring out in my boat:
Giant cooler full of food, soda, and water, also works for a bunch of fish
2 steelhead rod with 12 plus pound line on it for cats
1 rod for spin casting for bass, walleye, squaws, and the triploids at the secret pond 6-8 lb test
3" dark tube baits for bass
 powerbait orange trout
 red eggs triploids
Size 2 hooks, lots of them, pre-tied steelhead hooks work good with a bait loop, cats
Size 8 hooks to catch the best bait on, squaw fish, cut plug them, plus they work on the triploids or other trout
 large swivels
 three way swivels
pyramid weights or pancake weights, 1,2,4 oz
weight slides for your line, just like for sturgeon
 3/4 oz slip sinkers
 Worms
 Shrimp in shell, not cooked
 Beef Liver
trout (store bought f course to make it legal, I even have a pkg in my boat to prove it)
 Crawfish smelly Jelly
Net, large enough for a 20+ pound fish
rope stringer, don't want it breaking
 Good fillet knife
2" x 12" x 30" board with big nail, help fillet the fish
 camera

Plus the basic stuff that you want for camping. I will have a tent set up, possible a tent trailer, plus a 10x10 pop up tent.

If there is an interest I can bring down the BBQ, has like 6 burners on it 160K BTU

I hope to see as many people there as possible, we need to think of prizes for:
biggest fish
most fish
most variety of fish
or any other category you can think of

this will be fun, we will document it with pics and make all of you that can't come wish you would have  :chuckle:

snake river and palouse river I think there is a small lake also

:hello: The cats should be up the Palouse and the Tuccanan rivers spawning and hopefully fishing for them will produce. The Palouse is across the snake river and accessable by boat or a long walk. There is also a small lake in that area that has triploids in it. The Tuccanan is a smaller river that is accessable by vehicle and you can try your luck that way. Also by the Marina across the train tracks is a small pond that is great for smaller fisherman. If for some reason the cats are already back to deeper water then heaver gear will be needed. It can be 50 to 100 feet deep with current so downriggers or heavy weights will be needed.  What we are shooting for is to catch them in the spawn.  Although you can catch cats during the day.  A devoted fisherman can target prime time after dark.  Word of warning the palouse river has large flats that are only a foot or two deep.  You can be in the middle of a large bay and hit bottom.  Once you find the channel thou it is deep enough for  a fair sized boat.  Also this time of year the wind can really blow and it can get downright rough crossing the Snake.  Smaller craft be warned.  There is a boat launch on the North side of the river at the park if it is open.

Thank you for that.  I heard your request was granted so don't forget the sunscreen.
Also I'm pretty sure the boat launch and the state park open for Memorial Day so we should be good on that side of the river too.

 I looked up what the WA state records are:

Channel cats             36# 3oz
Flathead cats            22# 13oz
Blue cats                  17# 12 oz

The way I look at it is that we a year later and they are a year bigger.
Lets break a few records guys.

The cats will probably average about 2-5#'s but have gear that will at least give you a fighting chance to pull one of the big ones out from under a bank or out of some rocks.

A slip sinker set up or even a slide sinker set up is great because often the bite can be delicate. A lot of people use a #6 treble hook or even a number 4.  If your going to try dip baits you will probably want a treble.

There are so many options on bait that all I can suggest is bring an assortment.  We have time to get some things from the net so give it a try.

Hopefully some of the guys that fish within 75 miles of Lyons Ferry for cats can give us some great idea's as to where to go.  That way we are spread out more and will probably overall have better luck.  If we don't it will be like fishing the green river.  Wall to wall people casting in sequence so they don't get tangled up. I'd go crazy with claustrophobia. Not that I'm not crazy already.

Saturday night sure sounds like the time for the potluck, and a few great stories and maybe a few believable ones too.

What time are you planning on leaving Saturday morning?  Maybe we could meet up at say, the Geiger exit truck stop and convoy over.

Who is bringing a boat?
Me and stump are but if my wife and one kid go its full. We should really try and see how much boat room we have. Not that you have to have one but it is nice.

Like stated earlier we can also run people up the Palouse a mile or so, about a 20 minute ride from camp. That is where a large portion of the cats will be, at least if it is windy.

Teacherman,

I have not fished over there before I have a 21 foot Skeeter bass boat, I do not know if that is adequate for that kind of water, what kind of boat works in there? Do you need a sled??

I'm bringing a little 12' aluminum with a 10 hp.  It won't get wet if the wind is blowing but if the weather cooperates I will take it up the Palouse.  Right now it's just me and the black dog so I can fit one depending on conditions.

Anyone know how to take the image off the document and post it in the body of my reply?  Or how to label on a pic and keep it a pic?  I'm not to good with this stuff.  It took me half an hour and a few phone calls to get the text on to the pic/document.

One thing I would suggest for anyone bringing kids or just anyone interested is contacting the hatchery and seeing if they will set up a tour of the facility.  I'm not sure what will be going on there then but it's kind of cool to see how it all works.  I will also suggest stopping at Palouse Falls on your way out if you have never been.

There are several road cuts on the way to Lyons ferry that have some really accessable rocks. Last year we stopped and got about a 50 pound rock and tied an anchor with it. The 18 pound anchor we had in the boat was a joke. We took it and put it off the back side and the large rock off the front and between the two of them we did good. I would say with your boat at least one 20 lb off the back and a 25 -35lb off the front. The only reason for such heavy anchors is the wind. We have a top on the Alumaweld causing a lot of drag, if your boat is a sled style you wouldn't have as much drag making it so you don't need as much weight.

Check out this google earth photo. You can see the shallows on the back bay. If you go to google earth and type in Lyons Ferry, Starbuck, WA you will find it. You can see several locations where you could fish from shore. I used the ruler to figure out how far up the palouse we went last spring and it was almost 5 miles, but we fished as close as .25 miles.

One more pic, you can see the state park on the otherside of the bridge. Last year it was not open yet but people would park at the top by the road and walk down in and fish off of the banks down there. This can be a decent location.

I heard of a good recipe for shad. You put it on a cedar plank that has been coated with olive oil. Stuff it with onion and garlic. roast a low heat about 225 degrees for about 5 hours.  Take it out and throw the shad away and eat the plank. ;)

Your right Joe...June is after turkey season...  Most of the fish were caught on the snake with squawfish, I believe..I have scouts out fishing and they will tell me when to come down, those pictures are from last year caught by my buddies..I have never gone..not an expert..Most of May will be dedicated to Walleye and Tournaments..so I may be down that way..My anniversary is June 4..so that will delay things a bit.  I know one thing for sure ...Ice cold Keystone light and Coors light helps catchem!  Good luck guys..One more pic to get you going....

Hey Yelp hurry up and finish up with those turkeys. It;s only a month until our catfish trip and you need to let us know how the heck you guys caught such big fish and there has to be something else  to buy. Those were some great pictures you had of your camp and hunt it sure looks like you have a great start on hunting season.

Here is what I have been working on this spring.  Bass on the flyrod is new to me but I think any streamer will work depending on their mood.  I'm headed up to the PO this weekend to try for pike and smallies and maybe a turkey.  I will have the spinning rod and some plastics if the wind is up and definately spinning rod for cats.  Come on June!

I'm am use to fishing for smallies a little later in the season when it is warmer but we use and assortment of plastic grubs, and rooster tails, small spinners, etc.  I have a feeling that presentation is going to have to be slow for the smallies this early but we shall see.  I'm still hoping for a good catfish bite. :fishin: :cmp1: :cue:

Just jokin'.  Seriously, I went that same route a few years back. Knee surgery the last day of the school year. The good news is with any luck, he'll be ready for hunting season in the fall.

I would concentrate on the area's of the Palouse that can be reached by foot.  There is also the Tuccanun, the mouth of it and the deeper holes.  Check the regs first.

There is a state park at the mouth of the Palouse river. It will be closed but you can park at the gate and walk down to the marina. The cats will be in only 2-5' of water because they will be in the spawn. This protected bay on the river should be a great spot for them from shore. You are looking for large shallow flats. Last year I saw half a dozen cars parked at the top and they where walking down in. I would use a set up that allowed you to use several baits at once. 3-way swivel sets. I would try cut plus trout, squaw fish, shrimp, and of course liver. Night crawlers work as well and you will pick smallmouth up with them. If you get into small mouth you will actually want to move, the cats will be in schools and be chasing the smallmouth away because they are spawning. Don't forget about the little trout ponds in the area also, the best fishing for cats is obviously evening and night time so have fun bring a rifle and go shoots some yotes and ground squirrels during part of your day. I feel really bad guys, this surgery date is actually making me miss the last week of school which is horrible. I feel for my sub that week. I told the doc that my last day of school was the 12th, but i wanted the surgery in June not July or August and this was the date he said he could get me in.

rasbo, I will be camping down there for sure.  I haven't decided if I will get a spot at the marina or camping across at one of the unimproved spots on the river between the park and the hatchery.  I will probably set up at the marina unless I can convince any of team unnecessary (YAR drunk and on steroids) to join me.  It is whacker1's anniversary so he is out and many of the others have new wives and baby's.  If any of the rest join in we will need to be as far away from the public as possible.  Regardless, I will be there and I know the area well, I just haven't spent much time down there this time of year chasing cats.  I'm sure that with our combined knowledge and the help of others we will slay them.  There is also a great tackle shop in Starbuck called Darver tackle that has everything including the local insight.  Also I heard second hand that the state park is going to open May 22 this year, we'll see.

Hey guys and gals I had some info I heard of a couple years ago that I thought I would share. I read a article that talked about fishing up there for cats and it said to find back water around 6 to 10 feet deep us minimal weight and bait of your choice let it free fall and attempt to keep it suspended. I hope this helps you folk out I am going to try and make it up there it's along shot though. Another bit of info is it you leave town heading towards Starbuck there is a road/old railway heading back down stream I have had good luck in there picking off rodents.    Hope this Helps!

Possible thunderstorms thursday and saterday might want to put that weather report back in again Rasbo last year at central ferry our tent blew down during one of those possible storms. Instead of shad my friends trolling are saving salmon hearts for me. Boy the ocean is full of silvers everywhere you go there is silvers. My friend caught 24 salmon trolling in 40 fathom straight out most of them 15 to 20 pounds looks like it might be a good sport season. I caught 6 ling cod 10 to 18 pounds at the end of the south jetty yesterday. See you friday.

I just talked to the folks at Lyons Ferry Marina and they told me that if you haven't made reservations yet that you should hurry. They only have a few spots left. Also stated that if you have reservations and arrive Friday morning that checkout time is 12:00 so you might have a wait to get your spot. I reserved a tent spot for myself and 2 others. We have not decided whether we are coming for sure. If you get there and need a tent spot there are none available, I will let you in on my spot if you call me at 360-451-7784 or tell them you are from Hunting -wa. and they will call me. Again I hope to get there but probably just for Sat. and may not even stay. I made the reservations just for back up.

So how about a write up to fill in all of us who couldn't make it.  We want a few details, like did anyone fish from the shore?  If, so how did they do?  What were you catching them on?  :'(  I hope you guys all had a great time!  How many folks showed up.  I ended up having quite a few family members fly in for my daughters graduation and never could get away like I hoped.

remember that this was fishing the spawn.  In another week or two it will be over and the cats tend to head out and spread out.  Not totally inaccessible but harder to catch in quantity.  On the other hand the small mouth seem to group together and you can catch over a hundred a day if you work for it.  A blast.  Remember to only retain what you feel like cleaning after a day in the sun and How many beers was that?  I am hoping that next year we can all get together and have a great time. :hello:

Rick said he had a lot of call orders to fill so I will let you know what I can. Rick showed up on tuesday and started to try the bank by the state park but ran right on to a rattlesnake and decided not to go any farther. Only Rick and myself and my friend Bob showed up so Rick hopped in my boat. We followed the advise of teacherman and Da stump and they were right on the money with there advise right down to the sand bars. We ran into a guide from the white elephant and he gave me some hooks and showed us how he rigged up. He used spinning poles with 10 pound line and no weight you just cast out and let it drift with the current. He caught suckers and filleted them and made 3 inch strips about an inch wide and put a hook in one end. We caught ours on chunks of trout. Anyway we were dissapointed in not being able to meet more of you but Rick put on a calling demonstration for us that had us looking for coyotes and he showed us some of his calls he has made that you would liked to have more of. We had a great time and plan on doing it again at the same time like Da stump advised and hope next year more people will be able to be there. We never could find that lake so it;s still a secret.
