Here is my first moose and the first moose I taxidermied. Talk about hard work HOLY!

Wow you did that all yourself eh? It looks great. I know who to call up if I shoot a moose and need it mounted. :P
-
That looks good. I've always thought that a euro on a moose would look pretty cool too.
-
Bone,
Did you tan that yourself or did you send it to a tannery?
-
I tanned it myself. Nothing like pulling a soaking wet moose hide out of the container, and try to slap it onto a form without getting hide paste all over everything, then have the frame that is holding the form and mounted antlers pull out of the counter it is mounted on because of the weight. I sat there and held it ALL until I could pull over a 55 gallon drum filled with traps with my outstretched arm over to stick his nose in it. Basically what it boils down to is there is nothing small about a moose. I was happy it "turned out" ok. I was very disappointed in the ears. Not in their position as that was what I was sort of going for, but it was the first time I used the bondo ear method, and I had a slit or two in the ears and the bondo leaked out into the hair.
There was a ton of shaving to do. That was also a HUGE job. I had never dreamed their hide was so thick. I'll try to get pics of my next moose that I did. I think it turned out way better. It was also a Shiras, but I had to mount it on an alaskan form it was so cottin pickin big. They don't even have the same look. Its like you pulled a moose out of the Yukon and placed him in the North woods of Idaho.
-
Well you deffinatly had your work cut out for you. Why didn't you send your moose and Elk Capes to the tannery? Their is a real good one in California I hear. I can get you their contact info if you like. All you have to do is rough flesh the cape and salt it and send it to them and they do the rest. When you get it back it is ready to mount.
I use Bondo in all of my deer ears. Keep at it and it will get easier. If done right it looks just as good as ear linners.
-
Just part of the experience I guess. Sort of like tieing your own flies or handloading your own bullets. It also might be cheaper, though I'm not sure about that, those chemicals aren't that cheap. If you know of a good tannery, I'd certainly like to look into it. I would like to do a bear and they aren't the funnest of all hides to mess with.
-
Do you have any extra capes and or hides you could send them? I personaly have never used this tannery but I hear it is good. Send them a practice cape if you can. I will get back to you with this information.

Hey Michelle, finally found the pics for you. He still needs to be painted, but this is him hanging....

You can see how different the looks are on this bull and the washington bull. I had to use an alaskan form on this fellow. His snout is aout a mile longer than the average shiras.
-
awesome...i need to get me one of them one of these days.
oh yeah by the way...i found this one just for you, bone

i have 1 point now, so by the time i'm like 90, i'll be a shoe-in.
-
From what I can see in the pic thats a pretty good looking Moose. I like em when they are almost jet black.
Did you tan this one in shop?
-
Thanks Jackelope, I may have to make that my signature.
Thanks Michelle. Yep tanned it out in the shop. I'm still trying to recover.
-
Man I am going to have to get you hooked up with a good Tanery for all that big Elk and Moose stuff.
I should be out their first week in July and will have a few Deer and a Sheep cape coming back from Key Stone Fur Dressor. I will have to show them to you. If I like the way they turned out. I am trying them again after 3 years. I normally use Carolina Fur Dressors as my tannery. They are the best in the country.
-
Great job Bone, I do not think I even have a wall in my house big enough for that big boy. I do not think my wife would let me put it right in the middle of the living room like I would want to, LOL
-
Thank you!
:chuckle:
I tried to get away with putting two in the living room, but I got the kibosh put on that real quick. Can't say I blame her, but I had to try.
-
:chuckle: I don't run into this problem at my house. My husband realy doesn't care what I hang where in the house. Gotta love it! ;)
Boneaddict it all boils down to the fact "You need a show room"..... or a "Mans" room as I have heard it called, LMAO
-
man cave...i wish i had one.
-
I have one, but it needs tobe way bigger. Its on the agenda. If she can get some mounts out of the house by having one built, it just might happen.
-
Here is my Idaho moose mount. I'm really happy with how it turned out. But then again, for the amount of money I paid it better turn out good!

Nice Mount! Great Trophy!
-
It looks awesome Dude. Thanks for posting it up. You'll find yourself staring at it alot. They are spendy little fellas, from the minute you draw that tag until the end, but good eats, and addicting as all heck. VERY NICE bull. I'm hoping Idabooner or my wife get drawn this year so we can get back out into the moose woods.
-
I've been dreaming about moose today. You'd think I would be thinking about elk, but this time last year my moose hunt was unfolding, so thats where my head is at. I stumbled upon this picture. Vek had sent it to me from a guy in Alaska, and knwoeveryone likes looking at monsters. This qualifies. Another way to have your moose mounted. I don't really like his ears, but quite frankly who would notice.

i didn't until you went and said something
-
:chuckle: Man, if I get one of those in my shop this season I am going to have to have a Heavy Duty mounting stand built.
-
My stand held up, but the bench it was mounted to came apart. It wasn't funny at the time, but it is now looking back at it.
-
nice bull Bone, sure looks bigger than 144 though. I cant wait to see Popes on the wall, its done he just needs to get out to your area to pick it up.

Here is a 63" Alaskan/Yukon moose I did for a customer last year.
-
I gotta go back. Better add those huns to the bird mounts. I like that one.
-
anybodyn seen the monster.com commercial with the head mount in one office then they pan through the wall and theres the rest of the moose with the guy at that desk basically sitting under his balls.
-
Elkstuffer I really like that mount ;)

YEP thats the one!
-
I was at a Super Bowl party and was the only one that really got a kick out of that commercial. I was also the only taxidermist there. Go figure. Everyone else in the room (except my wife) voted for Obama. Figures.
-
ewwwwwwww what a dreadful joy that must have been. :chuckle:

Yeah I laughed pretty hard....it would be pretty funny to see that in a house

I came pretty close to doing a full on my Idaho bull just because it was close to the road. I wanted one ever since seeing one in the museum in Winthrop when it was up there by partners. That was so cool. I know cabelas has one but just not as impressive since its down in a hole.

Several years ago, "The Mangy Moose" in Jackson Hole, WY had a Lifesize Moose Mount on display in their store. It's a real eye opener as to just how big a moose is.
-
Oh I thought this was Moose Mounts..... :chuckle: :chuckle: Pretty tame they can be..................
