Title: I'm PISSED
Post by: Gutpile on March 04, 2009, 07:24:29 PM
I shot a dandy coyote this winter that I wanted to keep and have tanned for the trophy room. Really dark bugger with about 3" of white on the tail. Just a cool dog. Anyways the taxi said just freeze it and bring it in when you can. So I froze it and while cleaning the shop this weekend I just opened the freezer to check it. BOOOOOM!!! The stink was un freaking believeable. My freezer decided to die so I lost the hide. Damnit!! I hate when things like that happen. Thats the second freezer I've had go bad. The last time I lost a whole deer. Oh' well. Guess I'll stimulate the economy and go buy another freezer.

if you have a ton of meat in it you can claim it on your home insurance. I lost both of mine a couple of years ago and I got a good chunk of money for replacement of the freezers and the meat.

Maybe you can ask Obama for some stimulus money to help out?  To bad on the hide, sounded cool.

Gutpile buy one with a freezer alarm.

Or go buy a freezer alarm.  They are like $10.

ALL my freezers have an alarm.  Plus i check them atleast once a day.

Another thing to keep in mind.  A frost free freezer will cause hides and food to freezer burn quicker.

Do I get another tag and all the money spent on fuel?

I did it myself years ago....unplugged the chest freezer so I could use the table saw....forgot about it.

Probably 10 days later went out to get some meat...  :'(  Totally devastating experience. Deer, Elk, pork, salmon, gamebirds, you name it. Horrible.

No meat in this one. All the game thats left is in the house.

I may get an alarm. Can you put the alarm in the house even though the freezer is in the shop? I never use the shop in the off season so I'd never know it was going off till it's too late.

That stink was something else. You think coyotes stink when you shoot them? Try a rotton one out.  :puke:

Interesting molds too.  :puke: :puke:

Didn't know that. I was going to bring it up the following day but he wasn't going to be around so figured I'd wait. guess I waited to long.

Interesting molds too.

I think I would have just loaded the freezer in the back of the truck and hit the dump

Ok than my question would be how often when you go into the shop in the off season do you check the freezer.  If you are just going in their quick for something you may not check it.

If you have a freezer alarm you don't have to go check it.  Unless your freezer alarm goes out, LOL.

Freezer alarms are worth the $$.

Ohh non of the ones i have seen actually go in the house.

Maybe they make a wireless alarm?  That would be a good idea.

Here is one that I googled up:  http://www.partshelf.com/ci00985.html

Never. The shop is for my business. When the season is over November-Feb I don't go in there unless I need a tool or something. I'll probably just make space in the garage, that way I'll check it all the time. I've been able to fit all of my game in the house freezer so havent needed to use it much.

Thanks all. Gave me food for thought.

To bad you threw the dog out.  The meat was just getting tender.  Should have cut off those back hams and threw them in the show cooker with some taters and carrots. :chuckle:

OK Just a suggestion you can take it or leave it, What I do is save every milk jug and 2 liter bottle I can find and fill them with water and put all of them in the freezer and only take out enough of the bottles to fit the food in and when you eat the food or in this case get rid of the hide then replace the bottles so the freezer is always full of something, that way if you were to forget to plug it back in ICEMAN or it goes TU you have a bit more time before all the precious game meat thaws cause the ice in the jugs will keep it frozen for a very long time especially if you don't open the door and if you do you'll know there is a problem !!!  :twocents:

It works !!

Robo, I hear ya. We do this ice thing now, besides I never need to buy block ice anymore... . But back then, the really old chest freezer in the garage had crappy insulation, it was summer, and it may have been even longer than 10 days... Not sure the ice trick would have worked in that case...  :puke:

Alarms are a great idea.

Oh god...the memories..the BAD MEMORIES..
It was only a few months ago that I almost lost 100 lbs of meat. I was able to cook/refreeze or can most of it, but it was a pain.

I would have given you a chest freezer. Works fine last I had it plugged in. We are getting rid of several appliances, about to order some new stuff up for the kitchen.
