Title: She's a cougar!
Post by: STRINGSHOOTER on November 27, 2017, 08:38:14 AM
What you do with your cougar after you get it? :chuckle:
I've been seeing a lot of cats taken on social media and I'm wondering what you guys and gals do with it after you kill one. Skull? Hide? Claws? Meat?....
Never seen anyone talk about what happens to the animal after the kill. THX!!

Cape it for a mount or rug and eat it. I was surprised how tasty cougar meat was

This should be in taxidermy. I can't wait to try my first cougar chops.

I have killed two and the hides got tanned and the skull on my biggest one just got wet outside until nature did its thing, the second one the hide got tanned and I yanked the k9s out and pitched the rest, I have heard cougar meat is pretty good but I won't take a chance of getting whatever disease you can get from eating carnivore !!

Cougar meat is delicious!  I haven't been lucky enough to shoot one, but a taxidermist I knew let me take the carcass of a client that did not want it.

I'd do a rug with the hide as I'm not a big fan of full body mounts.

Never killed one, hope to do so someday.  I've had it several times and was good meat.  I'd eat it, save the skull and give away the hide to someone who wants a rug or mount.

Had the hide tanned and the skull cleaned by beetles.  Meat is probably the best meat I have ever eaten.

You realize it's the exact same disease be it omnivore or carnivore? It's the same disease that lead to taking meat out if the diets of commercially grown pork.  It's the same disease that is why we cook pork to well  done center temps.

Food handling classes really should be required in this day and age the lack of how food works knowledge is mind boggling.

Cougars are quite tasty.

so if you get a chance to go grizz huntn are you gonna eat the meat? Eating cat is just not a common practice, and your right, I don't know a lot about meat!! Even if I did I ain't eating cat  :) my dad has eatn it and also says actual beaver meat is better than deer meat!! Again I have never eatn flat tales before and ain't about to start  I ain't positive but I beleive the chances of getting sick from a carnivore is greater than eating an omnivore  :dunno: but again I ain't positive !!

The only reason I wouldn't eat grizz is from everyone I have ever talked to the meat tends to taste horrible. I will try it, I will try anything once.

It took me years and years to think deer was edible. Until a specific person said here try this and I was like ok but deer always tastes like billy goats smell. I was shocked it tasted good. Didn't taste like stinky goat at all.

So yup if I kill a grizz I will try it then decide if I like it.

Jackmaster, if you ever kill a cat, I will take the meat.  :)  You really don't know what you are missing.  PS your Dad is right, beaver is excellent meat, just keep the castor off the meat and it is VERY good!

My dad has two cougar full body mounts, I'll end up with at least one, if I want it....  The funniest thing about his was when my dog would slink through the living room looking up at the thing ready to pounce from it's log beam perch.   :chuckle:

Yak. There's a handful of critters I will never chow on down and cat is one of them. Call me weird.

Cougars are worth killing just to eat them. Very good; kind of like a cross between pork roast and light turkey meat.

Great stuff! Sorry for the "misleading headline" but thanks for all your input. I strive to be a responsible hunter and knew you guys could school me. Haven't been close to a cougar or had a shot, yet, but they're in the area. Never saw anything other than someone carrying one. I love the big cats, but would appreciate getting one with my bow.

Am I wrong in thinking that you are required to take the meat and use it?  It is a big game animal.

I gave the meat to my taxi at the time on mine but regret not trying it. As far as the mount goes, it was a relatively close range head shot so the euro and any chance of a mount were gone, ended up with a soft tan that hangs in my entry way

Just cook it to 165F and any trichinosis will be killed off. You can also send a tissue off to a lab to see if it's trichinosis positive.

I've ate Squirrel, Rabbit, Raccoon, Grouse, Pheasant, Deer, Elk & Black Bear. Wouldn't mind trying Beaver, But Cat & Coyote, I don't think I even want to try it. I'm not a cat or dog kind of person. I guess in places like Korea dog is good to go.
If I ever shoot a cougar I'll post it on here for some one else to enjoy.
If any one has any beaver meet to spare I'd like to try it.

Rug, bleached skull & shish kebab.  Served my Nevada cougar at a company potluck function- nothing sneaky, told them what they were eating- and was surprised at the number of folks who wanted to try it and liked it.  And at a California function, no less!
