Title: Is this a Badger?
Post by: Dhoey07 on November 28, 2017, 08:56:34 AM
Can you guys help me out please?  I saw this guy out turkey hunting this year and got a few pics with my phone, one is awfully blurry but the other is decent.  We have had sightings of this kind a few times in the last couple years.

Thanks.

A quick Google Image search says yes.

And also very cool. I've never seen one, just the massive holes they dig. I wouldn't want to end up cornered in a dark alley with one of those guys.

Yep, a badger.
I haven't seen one here, but have trapped a few back in Europe. They're pretty aggressive when you get really close to them. Just a heads up to not let a dog or anything get close to it, their jaws are pretty strong.

Well, I owe my old man an apology then  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
He first saw one at this place probably 5 years ago and I told him that no way did he see a badger out here.  Then, last year I saw one and thought it had to be one of these, (https://bibleworldadventures.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/marmot-on-rock-closeup.jpg?w=522&h=347)
Then comes this year, when I see another one and he's just moseying around under a rock face and working his way towards me.  I snap a couple pics and confirm that it's just some kind of marmot  :dunno:  :chuckle:  Well in the paper on sunday they have an article about the rarely seen badger,  http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2017/nov/26/rarely-seen-badgers-slow-their-digging-frenzies-as/
and I figure I needed to take another look at my pictures.

He seemed really docile and I guess I was just expecting a more aggressive, snarling animal if it was in fact a badger.

Are these sightings rare enough that I should let WDFW know?

They are not that rare.  I tend to find pockets of them once I have located one.  Don't mess with them, they can rip you wide open with their claws and/or teeth.  I don't think it is legal to shoot them here, trapping only.

Badger it is.  Quite a few on the dry side.  Pay attention, lots of loose skin and a bite beyond compare.

Had one chase me up in Manastash one time.
Little bugger hissed and came at me, I ran.. Did not even think about it..
