Post by: bankwalker on March 05, 2009, 03:07:08 PM
anyone been fishing the chehalis for sturgeon?

i went out the other night and got one barely legal keeper. thanks to the wdfw making the new slot limit  :chuckle: finally they do something in my favor  :P

anyone else been out and had any luck?

anyone wanna hit it next week sometime from the bank?

ps they are very picky biters on the chehalis from what ive seen. the one i caught hit for about 20minutes before finally picking the bait up and swimming with it.

got a few other hits that night that went on for around 10-30minutes. but they wouldnt pick it up long enough to get the hook set

Learning new things every day, didn't know that river had Sturgeon....  Hmmmmmm, is it accessible by boat????  Might have to see about exploring there, one heck of lot closer and something new...

yeah you can fish it from a boat. i know a few guys who do good. just find the deeper holes and fish around them on incoming high tides.

i personaly caught mine at low outgoing tide...

do ya do anygood in the daytime,

ive only fished it a few times. 6 to be exact and this is the first one ive caught and the first trip where ive actually gotten any bites that i know were sturgeon. it was the first one ive ever caught from shore in general anywhere including the the columbia.

i guess its just a tide game. best is incoming high/slack tide. BUT to be honest we didnt get a single bite till outgoing tide. it was like they were migrating down the river and all the sudden we were getting hit good for about 3 hours. then it just turned off till incoming tide. and once the water for to about the same level as when i got mine earlier they started biting again.

i have fished ut a few times. my buddy has always done ok from friends landing. i caught a 54" there a few summers ago. there are so damn many squawfish they peck at your bait constantly.
i met a fish checker there at the launch one day when i was pulling my boat out. he told me the tribe nets for springers with nets on the bottom {quite often} to get sturgeon "bi-catch". they make more per pound for sturg. then salmon he said. they guestimated that they caught 8-12k sturgeon from may -july that year. the chehalis was killer about 15 years ago but  is hit or miss now.

the chehalis rocks for sturgeon. i catch alot of fish on the chehalis i put in at friends landing and run about four miles down river to a few holes i found. from there it's fish on. go to youtube and in the search bar type in chehalis river i got a fish on video from the chehalis a buddy of mine hooked. about six to eight feet.

Is that a friends landing or the actual name of a landing?  Just curious, was looking on the map and couldn't find that name anywhere?

You turn off at montesano and head toward raymond it;s called the blue slough road you only gp a half mile off the freeway. Friends landing is a park with a lake and boat ramp and fishing platform and a couple plunking shacks that volenters built for handicaped people.

you take the devinshire rd exit just past monty take a right at the end of the ramp then take the right over the bridge and follow that look for the sign to friends landing.the boat ramp is a nice ramp. but you will need 4x4 on a low tide its very very muddy and deep on a low tide. i catch fish on the chehalis everytime i go its very good fishing. if you have the right bait. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

I grew up in Raymond fishing sturgeon on the Willapa, Naselle, and Chehalis back when it was pretty good fishing on all. Fishing these days seems to be best in winter from what i have heard from friends down there. the last part of the outgoing tide plus first half of incoming is good as well, just different spots for both - i always liked the last half of outgoing, plus first part of incoming and then high slack.

Curious for sure, Some kind of mystery bait down on the Chehalis that works better than the big C???      Sand Shrimp, Smelt, Anchovies, Squid, Night Crawler, shad and eel...  Something magical maybe???? :dunno:  The skinned neighbors cat????

i got the snohomish river system figured out...at least in my mind. i know all the slots, and deep holes, and which areas are better then others.

i just need to figure out someone to get out with lol

also the huge key in getting fish in the snoho, stilly is the learn to fish the mouth in the salt. thats the big trick i guess.

as for the chehalis...i know the secret bait  8) ill sell the secret for 1billion dollars.  :chuckle:

i hear the nisqually actually has a fair number of sturgeon. i knew a guy that would catch 1 or 2 every time he tried . he actually fished the mouth of mccallister creek but it was the nisqually delta. he used a secret bait too  ;)

if you guys make it out the the chehalis in the near future , we would love to see some recent sturgeon pics

I fished the mouth then went out around towards Stanwood in the salt water when the tide got right.....supposed to be the best spot. Had crabs stealing most the bait....got to hit the tides just right. Need to get out with my buddy who knows the spots....We talked about it and he told me the general area two years ago...

ill get my buddie to email the pic of my chehalist sturgeon from the other day. nothing big at 38 1/8" inch. thank god the wdfw changed the size limit to 38-54"  :chuckle:

a 38.25 at the fork would still be at least 42 at the tail.. same size fish

well if the regs were still 42" i wouldnt have been legal. the tail was messed up. and the measuring to the tip of the tail has killed alot of legal sturgeon for me. its crazy the amount you catch that look amazingly perfect then you look at the tail and it looks like they got in a fight with a weed whacker

Damn seals chew the tail,,,I wish the size restriction was 50 to 60 inches. There is 3 times the meat on a fat 50 incher over a 42 incher.
Did that new 38-54 fork measurement pass here on the west side?

I agree the 38 still comes out to a 42 out of all the fish so far we measured this year, or real, real, real close.  Haven't gotten one yet with a chewed up upper tail... :dunno:

Something I made that makes measuring easier.... I took a piece of PVC schedule 40 and measured it, then with perm marker put 38, 41, and of course the other end 54 on it, it makes the quick measuring test, really quick and if it is extremely close then the tape gets brought out, but it has worked really good so far...  And it floats..

personally for me any fish under 45 in goes back anyway so a fish IMO "worth" keeping would be legal messed up tail or not, Unless its ungodly fat a 42-44 in fish does not give you enough meat after your done with it to kill it. IMO

I'll dig out some when I get to work tomorrow.  These will have to do for now.  My sons at Bonneville Dam this afternoon on the way home from Portland.  Couldn't get the little guy to look at the camera, mesmerized by the fish...

Where exactly is the viewing area at the dam?  That would be a cool thing to go check out...

Right at the exit.  Instead of going to the fish ladder visitor area, go left.  There is a little gift shop, a bunch of hatchery pens, a bunch of trout ponds that will make you cry, and a sturgeon pond with an underground viewing area.  The big guy is "Herman".  75 years old, 10 ft long, 400+ lbs.  Pretty cool.
Here are some pics of my sister, brother in law and I sturgeon fishing below Bonneville a couple of years ago.  Of course the biggest fish was my sister's.  We had to hang on to her to get it in.. she's only about 105lbs.  Fish was just under 7 ft.
