Title: 30-06 Vs .300 Win Mag
Post by: MeatEater87 on December 07, 2017, 10:26:56 PM: Alright guys newbie here. I have a .338 and .243 right now. Looking to add a new one. Let’s hear what the pros and cons are. Oh and what about the Savage? How are they??

He doesn't have a .30 cal yet and is asking about them.

You're clearly not recoil shy, so 300 WM. This coming from an '06 fan.

If you're looking for a true "split the difference" round, I'd agree with phool and look at the 7mm Rem Mag. Not a new, sexy 6.5 - but a solid classic that will do any job North American game requires. Just depends on what you want to do with it.

I agree with you! What is the intent use of new rifle? 243win will cover varmints and deer. 338win will cover larger game up to largest bear.

I am not a fan of the factory combo guns, but I gotta say...the Axis and the Weaver scope work pretty well together. Scope was clear, and was not a pain to dial in on paper. I , myself am not a MAG fan. Family does quite well with standard cartridges, .243, 7mm-08, 308, .270, & 30-06.

Loves that *censored*er and my father in law has a 7mm he wants to give me when he starts getting rid of them so not wanting to get one bc of that. The .243 is a single shot and you haven’t drop the barrel to unload and reload (not my favorite) I hunt on eastern side of Washington state so elk, whitetail maybe a mule this next season but I want a solid gun that will hold up and can be handed down eventually.

I would not buy an Axis, although I just bought one for my 12 year old daughter, because it was only $150 after rebate. But if I were you I'd get the 111 from Cabelas in 30/06. It comes with a Nikon scope for $500, and there's a $100 rebate from Savage so that brings it down to only $400. Great deal and you can't go wrong with the 30/06. I have three rifles in that cartridge.

Post by: WA hunter14 on December 08, 2017, 09:26:19 AM: I've had both and the 300 is by far my favorite, it's a powerful 30 cal that is flat shooting and ammo is readily available almost everywhere. I hated my 06. Just balistically doesn't have enough for what I do. I think it had something like 50 inches of drop at 500 yards and only 1000ft pounds of energy left.

More reach and power, and you're not recoil shy. 300WM can do pretty much anything in North America.

an 06 & a 185 classic berger @ 2750 maxes out @ 620 yards

A 300 win with same bullet @ 2950 maxes out @ 735 yards

Roughly 1800 fps min velocity is what im using as a max

unless your pushing the limits is the added recoil worth it ?? Its nice never having your crosshairs leave an animal after the shot

300 WSM on the other hand is going to be around a long time and it is offered in most brands of rifles. I'd go with a 300WSM if I were going with a 30 cal. It uses less powder than the 300 WM to achieve similar velocities so it is a more efficient cartridge. Also, being a short action, it is usually going to weight less than the 30-06 or 300 WM rifles.

Go with a Tikka wsm. Get a bolt stop and mag from mountain tactical to turn it into a long action so you can seat the 210's into the lands and fit it them in the mag. Dang near same velocity as wm.
