So I’ve got a retriever that I’m trying to get up to the next level of the retriever game level. I used to train pretty much every day when my kids weren’t as mobile but it seems like since both of them need to have a close eye on them I haven’t been training nearly as much as I’d like. Mainly just do a few fast training sessions on the weekend which seems like I’ve been to busy to do anything lately. Anyways long story short I don’t train him as much as I’d like, which got me wondering how often everyone else trains?

I've been pretty busy lately as well, but have been training about once or twice a week since hunting kicked in. Usually 2 setups but sometimes only one.

I try for 3 to 4 times a week. I'm retired, so I have the time, :IBCOOL: and I have a pointing Labrador, so we do both upland and retrieving. This time of year that slows down, so I can get some hunting in, and enjoy the fruits of all that training. :chuckle:

quality is far more important than quantity.

5 minutes here and 5 minutes there can do wonders if you think about it. What do you need to be working on? Let us know and I am sure that you will get some great ideas on here. My dog was having trouble at the beginning of the season. He had zero interest in retrieving. I have been working with him twice a week with frozen birds giving him a treat when he does it right or stopping when he doesn't we have made some pretty good progress. What are you trying to accomplish?

I’m trying to get him to the finished level of hrc. So triples and blinds. He’s solid on blinds but triples need work. When we do train it’s great and he learns. It’s just a matter of getting the time to go and do it.

So just thinking outside the box. For the blinds are you using hand signals? Couple of bumpers in the living room and work on hand signals.

I try to give each dog 5-10 minutes a day, which in reality equates to 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a week and then get out of the yard and actually train in the field 2-3 times a month until hunting season rolls around.
