Good luck guys! Does anybody else think it’s kinda weird they weren’t able to get the data they are looking for during the general season? Seems like all these deer didn’t have to get killed. Maybe they didn’t realize it was such a problem until after that?Testing wasn't required prior to this hunt. Every animal has to be submitted for testing here. Another benefit is if you can reduce the population maybe you can reduce the spread of the disease.

Yea no big deal. Just wanted to leave so I can hunt Saturday. They'll probably get to me about the time both quotas have been met. WI will test if the deer comes out of one of the zones.
Shoot a nubbin, according to the WI guys, no young of the year test positive....

Here was our pile before we skinned and quartered last night. Didn't end up filling the last tag today but still a very successful hunt. Probably never kill 3 deer myself in a day ever again.

The meetings are set for 7 p.m., Dec. 21, in Chester and Havre. The Chester meeting will be in the town’s high school auditorium, 511 Main St. The Havre meeting will be at the Hill County Electric Coop, 2121 U.S. Highway 2 NW.
At both meetings, FWP officials will present a background on the disease, what is known about the disease along the state’s northern border and what the department’s CWD draft management plan identifies for actions and management in the future.
A mule deer buck shot by a hunter Nov. 12 about 30 miles north of Chester near the Canadian border has tested positive for chronic wasting disease. The deer was taken in hunting district 401 in Liberty County.
The test results mark the seventh incident of CWD discovered in Montana wild deer this fall. The other deer came from south of Billings, where more than 1,000 samples were taken from deer, elk and moose this fall. Until this year, CWD had not been found in Montana, though the disease exists in wild deer herds in Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
In anticipation of the disease coming to Montana, FWP recently updated its CWD response plan.
CWD is a progressive, fatal disease affecting the central nervous system of mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk and moose. It is part of a group of diseases called Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs). TSEs are caused by infectious, mis-folded prion proteins, which cause normal prion proteins throughout a healthy animal’s body to mis-fold, resulting in organ damage and eventual death.
Though there is no evidence CWD is transmissible to humans, it is recommended to never ingest meat from animals that appear to be sick or are known to be CWD positive. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends hunters who have harvested a deer, elk, or moose from a known CWD-infected area have the animal tested prior to consuming it. If hunters harvest an animal that appears to be sick, the best thing to do is contact FWP and have the animal inspected.
Some simple precautions should be taken when field dressing deer, elk or moose:
•Wear rubber gloves and eye protection when field dressing.
•Minimize the handling of brain and spinal tissues.
•Wash hands and instruments thoroughly after field dressing is completed.
•Avoid consuming brain, spinal cord, eyes, spleen, tonsils and lymph nodes of harvested animals. (Normal field dressing coupled with boning out of a carcass will essentially remove these parts.)

Commission to hold call on north central Montana CWD hunt
The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission will hold a conference call Thursday to make a decision on a Sage Creek Special Chronic Wasting Disease hunt north of Chester.
CWD was found in a mule deer buck harvested in hunting district 401, which borders Canada. This is the second area of the state where CWD was detected this year.
During the general big game season CWD surveillance effort, six deer in south central Montana were found positive for CWD. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is currently holding a special CWD hunt south of Laurel in response to these detections.
The objective of a special CWD hunt, as outlined in FWP’s draft CWD Response Plan, would be to determine disease prevalence and distribution. For the Sage Creek Special CWD Hunt, FWP is proposing to sell 335 deer B licenses in an effort to harvest 135 mule deer. Of those 335 licenses, 60 would be either sex and 275 would be antlerless. Licenses would go on sale on Dec. 26 and the hunt would begin Jan. 6 and last through Feb. 15 or until the sample objectives were reached.
The Sage Creek Special CWD Hunt area is about 226 square miles in size and just east of the Sweet Grass Hills. It abuts to the Canadian border. The hunt area is primarily comprised of private land. As outlined in the draft plan, FWP has assembled an incident command team to respond to the discovery.
CWD is a progressive, fatal neurological disease that effects deer, elk and moose. It is not known to infect humans. The Center’s for Disease Control recommends not consuming animals that test positive for CWD. The CDC also recommends getting deer, elk or moose from CWD positive areas tested prior to consumption.
All animals harvested in the hunt must be submitted for sampling.
The call with the Fish and Wildlife Commission will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 21. Audio of the call will be available at regional offices, FWP headquarters in Helena and online at fwp.mt.gov.
