I am a Nebraska native, but moved to Washington about 10yrs ago to be near the wife's family. After seeing so many posts here for Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, etc... I thought I would chime in and let people know about an often over looked hunting destination. What I like about hunting back home is that it is a mix of "Western style" and "East coast/Southern style" hunting. Depending on which part of the state you choose to hunt you can focus on glassing with spot/stalk or sitting in a ground blind/tree stand with a portable heater and snacks. There are just so many deer in the state that it is hard not to fill at least one tag, this is real reason to go to Neb. There are big trophy bucks on public land but I suggest keeping expectations metered to freezer filling. Take a shotgun along, after filling deer tag(s) you can walk for pheasant, grouse or turkey!
There is a non-stop roundtrip flight from Seatac to Omaha for ~$150-250 bucks depending on when you go.
Non-resident tags are cheap, $242 for an either sex tag (you can buy 2). Some years they offer antlerless only tags for $70 (2 deer per tag, unlmited tags). You will need a habitat stamp also for ~$30. For archery and muzzy you buy statewide tags, but for modern firearm there are restricted to specific units or you can pay extra for a statewide buck only permit. Public access is generous but nothing like we have here in Washington, this is where I reccomend the Muzzy or Archery seasons. Modern season is a pumpkin patch in every direction, but starting Dec. 1 for muzzy season you will have nearly the entire state to yourself. Thanks for the posts. What is the drive, say from Western wa. To eastern Nebraska?... Sounds like alot of fun..
I do the drive to Eastern Neb. in two 13hr days (Seattle to Salt Lake, then Salt Lake to Lincoln). There are deer all over the state, but the better public access is in Western and Central Nebraska, which can be done in a very long day. The Nebraska game and parks does a good job of planting feed plots for wildlife on the public access sites. Also the NWTF does a good job managing some of the land also.
Find a corn field that borders a tree line and wait for the show to start!
