Just getting into bow hunting. Curious to know what broadheads you guys are running and what you have had the best luck with for deer and elk? Im thinking fixed blade is the way to go. Outside of that any feedback on whats worked well for you would be great.
-
I would go fixed blade for sure. I shoot shuttle t's because they are super strong and fly well but the slick tricks are a lot sharper and not such a steep blade angle. I wouldn't want to be hit with one of those.
-
Slicktrick standards
-
I couldn't ever get any of Rad's dumb quizzes, so I'm running slick tricks :chuckle:
When I wear these out I'll break down and buy some Rad design
-
I am running G5 montec. Simple and effective. Nice clean complete pass thru on my bear this year. One piece so no noise/rattle or replacing blades required. Easy to sharpen with a basic flat sharpening stone.

I've never shot a Rage in my life, but I know some guys who are going away from them. I've used Satalites, Wasp, Monotecs, etc.... Rad's are tempting but I still have some G-5's left. Being how I haven't nocked an arrow in two years, I think I'll be set for a bit :chuckle:
-
Rage Hypodermics at the moment. for deer (and the cougar i shot from my blind). I also have a RAD LPS Triple Sec head that has been run through one deer already. I very much like the attention to detail and the SHARPNESS of the RAD head but wanted a larger cutting diameter, thus the Rages. If I could get a RAD head with a solid blade and a bit larger cutting diameter, I'd be using them.
-
G5s Montecs with the compound which I haven't shot forever, and Magnus Stingers with the longbow.
-
I haven't bow hunted for years myself but my grandson has had some impressive results from Rad on deer and elk. He shot a bull elk in the front of the chest that would have made a pass though I think if the broadhead had not hit a hind leg bone in the ham. The Rad broadhead chipped/cut a hole at least ľ inch deep in the big hard bone after passing through the length of the bull-- and the only damage to the broadhead was some partial blade dulling and slight dents/waves on the cutting edge.
Good broadheads from a local man!
-
Rad Vandyke for me. Finest broad head I have ever used. Local guy/site sponsor and the heads fly amazing and are wicked sharp and kill very well.

Rage 125g hyperdermic.... just watch kill shots with rages and you will know why.
-
Went with Valkyrie Bloodeagle 200's this year. Didn't get the opportunity to see how they work on an animal but love the way they fly and they came very highly recommended by someone whose opinion I respect greatly. Switched to them from Strickland Helix 150's because I wanted to go a bit heavier. The Helix flew very well and were extremely effective on deer. That single bevel sure does make a mess of a target though.

Pretty happy with RAD as well, I use the TiCon.
-
Shot the G5 DeadMeat heads this year, did the job they were meant to do on my blacktail. Anything will kill, it's where you put it that counts :twocents:
-
Shuttle T's for me. My hunting partner and I have been using them for years and always had really good luck. Had lots of friends try other brands and had issues (fixed blades and expendables). Everything from flight issues, poor penetration, broken blades, etc. We have stuck with the Shuttle T's and will continue as long as they make them. They fly straight and are super tough.
-
Shot a white tail buck with a Raptor trick expandable. Tipped over grave yard dead at 20 yards. Considering they are not reusable I will look for something else in 2018.
-
TiCon 125 and Rival 125, both great designs. I haven’t taken an animal with the Rival yet but have killed two elk with it’s little brother, the VanDyke 100 LPS which is whisper quiet and solid as a rock. Two whitetail have fallen victim to the TiCon which is easy to switch to sharp, tight fitting blades and it shows no mercy!
-
Magnus Stinger 4 Blade, 100 GN.
-
G5 Striker for me. Shot them for years.
I’ve considered trying RAD but not sure what I could gain by doing so and I’ve had nothing but good luck with Strikers.
-
I have used a bunch of different brands, and I have been using the wac’ em exits. But I think I’m going to switch to the rad heads. The wac’ em’s Are crazy sharp but not super durable. Have heard nothing but good thing and seen good things about the rad heads.
-
Not the G5 montecs. Two years in a row with bad blood trails to follow. They do the job but I like a better exit wound that spews blood. Shot muzzys for years with great blood trails but might try the slick tricks this year on a recommendation from Denton at Rock Creek archery.
The montecs fly really noisy as well. Might have just got a bad batch as others like them but I won't shoot them again.
-
WapitiTalk1, did you run one of those through anything this year?
-
I run a 110grain G5. No issues, clean pass, good blood, easy to clean and keep sharp.

G5 montecs CS, though they don't sharpen as good as I'd like, and there price is too high. Might try slick tricks next year.
-
I’m also a Shuttle T guy. I’ve heard some people complain that they aren’t as sharp as they could be, but ive not had any problems. I’ve shot a few javelina with them one bull elk and a blacktail. Everything has died within site of me from where I shot!
I’ve tried a few other broadheads and have always had one issue or another. These Shuttle T’s always fly super straight for me and it really builds up my confidence out in the field. Shot placement is number one for me. If I get that little voice in my head, that reminds me, they weren’t flying so well at the range during the heat of the moment, we’ll no good man! Never any problems with the Shuttle T’s so I’ll be shooting them until they’re no longer around.. I’m super confident with those on the end of my arrow.
-
Muzzy 100 grain broadheads, or Shuttle T
-
shot montecs for several years and the last two years I have used ulmer's edge expandibles. the ulmer's edge flies just like a field point and and both times I had complete pass throughs and dead deer as a result. really all about placement like was stated earlier.
-
Running RAD madman heads. Thinking about going to the rival this year. I've head no issues with the madman heads they are great flying and get the job done for sure
-
G5 Montec here as well. Never had a problem with blood trails.
-
Am I dumb to say 3-blade Muzzy 100 grain?
Is it a great “meat and potatoes” broadhead or should I be spending more on broadheads because mo money equals mo dead critters, better blood trails, etc?

I’m pretty sure animals have evolved some since the inception of Muzzy Broadheads. Animals are tougher to kill now. My :twocents:

Uh no. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
-
Slicktrick 100gr
-
In all seriousness, I’ve been shooting Wac’Ems for 13 years. Never had an issue and they fly just like field points.
-
100grn shuttle t’s for me, they make big holes.
-
Allen Lightnings...yeah, I'm cheap!
-
Shuttle T-lock for elk
Schwacker for deer.
-
Magnus Stinger 2-blade, 125 grain.
-
Not sure where you are hunting, but Im usually in pretty thick stuff for deer. So I like to have a larger expandable blade. Last few years I have been shooting NAP Killzones. Crazy entry and exit holes and blood trails that look like they were shot out of a cannon. Makes tracking much easier, if they dont die within sight.
-
Rad heads for me. I've never seen blood trails like these heads produce.
-

I've been shooting muzzy broadheads my entire hunting career. That's not as long as many people on here but that's 20 years. 19 blacktails have fallen to them and none have gone further than 30 yards before keeling over. 3 blade 100 gr muzzy! Hell my blacktail this year didn't even make it 15 yards from where I poked her in the heart and its the same broadhead and arrow I shot my deer with last year and will use again next year lol! I do like the look of the Rads though. Might get a buddy of mine to try them.
-
I’ve tried all sorts of broadheads but I’m switching it up to these!
-
Rage.... Hands down.

Meh, thumbs down :chuckle:
all in fun though... run what you brung

I like to use grim reaper 1 3/4" razor tips for deer, and Hades for elk. I put two of each in my quiver and a g5 small game head in case of the off chance I find a rabbit out grouse.

Same issue with montecs last year and bad or NO blood trails. I shot a deer with great placement and no blood trail and my son did the same with no blood trail to speak of we found his deer by pure luck. Went back to shuttle t's the last elk I shot with one it looked like somebody poured a blood trail out of a bucket! Rad stuff sounds interesting I might check those out as well but I am hunting this year with shuttle ts again
-
I have been using thunderheads for the past 6 years but have been looking to switching to the Ironwill outfitters heads, just trying to decide on the solid 125g or the 100g vented but leaning towards the 100g since I have always shot 100g heads.

I'm so embarrassed for you right now! You will switch to RAD this year or I'm changing your name to Dummy McLoserton in my phone >:( 8)
-
Any RAD head will treat you well
-
Hey Dummy McLoserton stick with what works best for you!!
-
VPA for 3 blade, Abowyer Brown Bear for 2 blade. Both in 250gr.
-
I'm still liking my shuttle T's, big holes.
-
Hey Dummy McLoserton stick with what works best for you!!
:chuckle: I kind of like that name now. I think the only way he gets out of it at this point is if he shares his 84 bull points with me🤣

:yeah: I brought tithes and offerings of the "sticks of an elk" and he practically threw them back in my face... :'(
You'd have thought I was offending some psycho feminism the way he was screaming at me... :sry:
Apparently I was supposed to offer up something else......................... :dunno: :chuckle:

G5 Montecs. I am going to try some Rage Hypodermics this season to see how they work.
-
Zwickey Cliffs, 175 gr of vicious two blade purity.
-
I've used muzzy 3 blade 100's for 20 years, 15 dčer, 4 elk, 1 bear, none went more than 50 yards, always good blood.... also have so many spare parts hate the thought of changing and paying crazy prices for 3 per package heads....

Love my Muzzy's. Have used the same head for the last 3 deer I've shot. Pull it off clean and sharpen and back on it goes to kill another deer!
