Title: 150gr 30-06, Change in POI between brands?
Post by: chiwawadan on December 22, 2017, 11:44:37 AM
I have a question for you more experienced shooters out there. I'm zero'd at 100yds with remington core lokt 150gr 30-06 ammo. Heading up to the mountains and only have a few bullets left... Issaquah locations don't have the Remington's I would prefer - at least today on my way out of town. Winchester 150grs are available. Will my POI be negligible or am I better off zeroing in again on the Winchesters?

Thanks!

The only way to tell for sure would be to shoot them and see.
They may be exactly the same at 100 yards or they could be a ways off.
Bullet differences, brass differences, powder, and velocity differences could make poi very different potentially

I had a feeling that was the case.

Any folks around Issaquah have Remington Core Lokt 150grs for 30-06 hanging around I can pick up before I head over the pass this afternoon?  :chuckle:

Maybe instead of worrying about it I'll test the half dozen of each I have and see what that difference actually is? Thanks for the input!

It is likely to be different but you can't know how much without shooting the new ammunition. I'd hunt with the few rounds you have that the gun is sighted in with. :twocents:

 :yeah:
And your gun may just not group the Winchesters at all.  Best to check it out, imho

Even if you were to buy a new box of Remington ammo, there's no guarantee it will shoot the same as the ammo your rifle is sighted in with. What is it that you're hunting? For bigger targets at close distances, it may not matter. But you do need to confidence in your gun. I always want to be sighted in with ammo that I know is exactly the same as what I'm hunting with.

:yeah:  there is a reason that shooters who are into precision buy powder, bullets, and brass from the same manufacture lot in bulk.

I'll bet rem to rem if there is a shift in POI, it will be minimal.  Like Bob33 said, hunt with what you have and maybe pick up a box of something else.  If you for some reason shoot through the good stuff, make time to shoot a few of the new to check zero and accuracy.  Adjust shot distance based off new accuracy and keep hunting

The good thing is that I'm not out shooting animals this weekend - just target practicing and running low on ammo. But, I wanted to get everyone's take on this.

Shooting tipped bullets to non-tipped not unusual to shift 2 - 5 inches even.   Untipped  to untipped maybe 1-2”.

I'd agree with 1 to 2 inches, between Winchester 150 grain Power Points and Remington 150 grain Core Lokts. They may also shoot to nearly the same point of impact but I'd expect them to be at least an inch apart. More than 2 inches I'd be surprised. But again no way to know without actually shooting them in your rifle.

In my opinion there is no reason to think 2 different brands with 2 different bullets will shooot the same at all even if they are the same weight.

agree 100%   shoot them all up and be done with it.  Next year switch to Hornady Superformance 165 SST
