I'm going to take the family out for morels this spring. Can any one give me some guidance? All general or specific information is helpful. I have good luck with the chanties but don't know anything about the morels other than eastern Washington, near last year's fires, in the spring
-
I'm also going to be looking for them in the Spring.
Tagging along.
-
You said everything you need to know about morels. Ea Wa, Fires, Spring
-
Plenty on the west side as well....
- big cottonwood flats
- they start popping at lower elevations first and work up
- watch for the cottonwoods to bud up that's a good indicator on timing (usually sometime just before Easter)
-
Thimble caps (verpa bohemica) will start in late February on the West side and there will also be some blond morels mixed in. In late march, early April, the conicas will start showing up in the south Cascades. Thinned Douglas fir and ponderosa stands will have them. Burn morels will start in June and can continue as late as Mid-July.
-
Thanks for the input. Can any one expand on the great info for wet side morel opportunities?
-
Cottonwoods along river banks for the thimble caps and blonds. Conicas are very hard to find in the western part. At least get into the Cascades. Goldendale and Skamania Co. are good in late March to April.

Thanks pianoman.

Getting close :IBCOOL:
-
Is anyone finding westside morels yet?
-
Soon I'm thinking...... Nice warm weather, hopefully by the last week of March....
-
Looking forward to this.
-
Found my first morels on the Westside yesterday. All Grey's, as is typical for the early morels. Wide variety in size, most are just popping. I'm near the salt, they're always earlier here and extend into the first couple weeks of April. Good luck folks!
I've never done east side burn morels, if anyone wants to offer info on timing I'd greatly appreciate it.

Just a reminder that people are more likely to have a reaction to the false morels(ones by cottonwoods) that the true morels(fire area's) in my experience.
-
Pic of a few from yesterday. Found a few dozen today with plenty coming up. If you're near the salt and it's a sunny spot, they may be up. I'll second the false morel issue, I steer clear of them. I like the real ones better. :twocents:
-
 nice one’s too! Can’t wait to get the kids out after these this year!
-
I didn't know there was this thread here. If anybody wants to share info, PM me. I'm on Whidbey but I do have areas and info in the cascades for like minded people who want to share
-
Is there a foraging thread on this website? It would be cool if there was. Does anyone know of another foraging forum for Washington?

Look what I found near my house this weekend...
-
:)
I know the Parm is a sin........
-
Wow! Looks great! What part of the state did you find them?
-
in central wa along any river with trees just found some day before yesterday so it is starting. You can follow the harvest up elevation until mid May. Concentrate in areas with filtered sunlight next to meadows or open areas. Seems like they like these transitional areas. Early on like this more on south sun exposure areas in a couple of weeks be on the the north side of the tree line.

They are big and beautiful this year. Went with my Grandson this year because he asked to go a while back. It was a great hike!
-
Awesome. I'm in Richland today for my son's chess tournament. I was thinking of checking out some wooded areas along the Columbia or Snake. Is this considered potential morel territory?

Those are actually Verpa. Some people are sensitive to them.

Welcome to the sunny-side! I haven't heard of people finding morels around here, but you may be able to find wild asparagus.

Not for me and my fellow foragers!

Thanks jennabug, we didn't find any mushrooms or asparagus but my 9 year old and I did some serious rock skipping on the Columbia.
-
Next family adventure is to the Moses Lake sand dunes. We will be traveling on 90 from Bothell. Any intel on wether morels are popping along our route i.e.; Cle Elum, Eburg, Vantage etc? Any elevation recommendations? Thanks Wt

Anyone have any luck finding any morels on the dry side this weekend? Thinking about heading over the mountains the next weekend or two..
-
Please stop coming inside my park. I am busy with groups, which means,I have to ask you to leave. :bash: and yes the young men today had found a few lovely morels when I chatted with them. Fyi state parks harvest rules are different please read them before foraging.
-
Pretty quiet on this topic :dunno: ..... can mean only one thing...... :IBCOOL:
-
if you can get on the north side of the Yakima River near fish hacthery at Easton "and" get permission I've found a bunch of false morels. They were soooo good.
-
Thanks badhabit. Any pms..... I'm nice. So I take the radio silence means the mushrooms are in. Maybe just an elevation report?
-
Lots to be had. 2500’
-
lower is better right now. 3500 ish feet they were starting to pop up but still not in full swing.
-
been finding them around the 2000-2400 range in the central part of the state. Looks like they are really starting to pop in the area I go.
-
Thanks for the elevation reports. My son and I didnt have alot of time (two hours on the ground) and didn't find anything. We where 2000ft in one area an 3700 at another. No luck for us, but we are new, and two hours isn't much time. Central wa off I90.

-
Good stuff, Bond!
-
The wife and I got a few just walking the "senior" trail....
3000 feet
-
Thanks foe the elevation report Igot.
-
Hey guys, on these bigger morels, preheat your oven to 425F. get a can of the crabmeat from WINCO for about $10. Also get some shredded mozzarella. Mix the crab with the mozz 2:1 and stuff the morels (easier if you cut out around the stem at the bottom). Brush them with melted butter, lightly salt them, and roast them for about 15-20 minutes. Let stand for a few minutes when they're done. You'll thank me in the morning.
-
4000'
-
Picked up close to 2000 between me and 3 other people in the last week. They are really coming up good in Idaho. Rain almost everyday and the nice temps are helping.
-
Anybody seeing morels anymore? Elevation report?
-
Did well over memorial day weekend, got about 400 around 4000 feet or so.
-
Found a few today in a small controlled burn area, aprox 4000'
-
Setting up some cameras and got a few more yesterday at about 4,000 feet. Also found a small clump of yellow coral.
-
How do you guys preserve them? Would vacuum sealing and freezing work?
-
I have had really good luck with dehydrating them and then freezing, for just in case. They come back really well by just soaking them for about a half hour to an hour in milk, water or chicken broth, depending on what I'm doing with them. They come back good enough to fry them up or what I've been doing lately chopping them up in a chopper gadget and using them in a cream sauce over pasta or rice.
-
I'm going camping just barely over on the dryside this weekend. Ill be taking 90 over with my wife and kidos. We plan to look around for morels one last time. Is this heat going to make things better or will it terminate the season?
From the looks of it 4000 plus is where to look.
-
there should still be some decent picking at the higher elevations I would think. I'm not giving up yet. You might run into some coral or spring king boletus also.
-
Two hauls in about two hours of picking with my buddy on the 11th.
-
nice day of picking
-
That's alot of mushrooms. Nice work.
