I guess I'll jump in and share some of my excitement. I've long wanted to thin the herd and put some coin into what I consider a lifetime gun for me. Something that I don't forsee ever getting rid of and God willing will be in the field long after I'm gone. Being only 41 and not a rich man by any means I needed to ask myself what was important to me now and what would stand the test of time regarding caliber.
For caliber I decided on 7mm rem mag. Managable recoil and plenty of oompf for my hunting needs and plenty of range for my plinking needs.
I looked into many builders both local and online. I looked at production rifles like the Kimber Ascent. I talked with members that own all kinds of custom and semi custom. I kept going back to a builder that in my mind is the perfect fit. Self made, local, a shooter and hunter himself, and being a big resource and contributor here sure didn't hurt. Sent in my deposit to Travis at Rbros last week.
I'm excited. I'll be getting a LW Hunter in 7mm rem mag built with the 180gr Berger VLD in mind. It will be fairly stock for his builds. Standard break, stock, and tube. For glass it will get the NF NXS 5.5x22x50. Bipod is the adjustable Harris with swivel.
Now is the hard part. I'm in no hurry and am told be done by May. I may get a few pics along the way to share. Did I say no hurry....well...I admit to being a little antsy. Like knowing you are getting a special present at Christmas and trying to get to sleep.
More to come!

Good choice in rifle, and cartridge.
I'll be interested in seeing photos when it's done.
-
Who knows....maybe have a new avatar!
-
When you say LW hunter....how light weight are we talking? How long is the barrel? Little more information would be great as I do my research.
thanks

Who knows....maybe have a new avatar!
May is not quick enough.

I had a very similar-ish semi custom built on a Rem 700 LA awhile back except mine was chambered in 7mm Blaser mag which is a near ballistic twin to the 7mm Rem mag. Mine has a fluted Hart #4, 8tw, finished at 26 inches and wears a NF NXS 5.5-20x50. I shoot the Berger 180's w/RL26 and with the load I've settled in on it gives me right at 3050 fps. With a brake, these things are a *censored* cat to shoot. I'm sure you will like it a lot, Travis is a good guy and builds very nice stuff.
6.9lbs sounds pretty light, are you using some kind of LW CF stock?

You're putting way too much thought into this

Interested in seeing how this all turns out. Did you supply any donor parts? Regardless hope it's everything you wanted! This post has me pumped, I have the funds set aside and just searching and waiting to drop the hammer.

I've got a sort of custom rifle paralysis going on where every time I'm about to pull the trigger I change my mind. Light weight mountain, long range tack driver. 6.5x284 no wait 6.5 wsm hmm maybe 28 nosler... no definitely 338 Edge. In the mean time I continue to buy factory rifles which make me wonder if I need one at all, yet at the same time make me want one more than ever ( like the ugly tikka superlight that is 7 1/2 lbs with a 3-18x scope and full magazine and shoots 1/2" ) it's a viscous cycle.

so many rifles so little time
-
I have guns that will do all that I need. I don't need such a gem as this. However, you only live once. I went back and forth on caliber....so many options. Like my AR build....some may yawn at a 308....but it shoots and the 308 and loading comp will be around a long time. Same with the 7rm....tried and true and yeah, it isn't fancy or new but like time has told, it gets the job done. I admit tp a sense of relief now that we are in motion. No more what about this or that. I'm not donating anything....other than cash!
-
Congrats on a great rifle. I'm jealous as hell and maybe someday I will have one of Travis's rifles. The 7mm rem mag does nothing but drive tacks and kill stuff. Great choice!
-
Great choice in the 7 mag. I'm partial though.
That avatar though. I'm scared that it's actually you. You did send me that picture on Halloween....

only thing I find with my 7mag is SD/ED. Seems to run a bit finicky. If you are not stretching it out.. no worries.. im now into turning necks, and neck tension to tighten up velocities on my reloads... would be interested to know what your numbers are (if you are capturing)
-
Hope the dreams this build has spun come true. Congratulations and looking forward to seeing the results of you wait.
-
Numbers as in velocity....with his load and data history I expect muzzle velocity to be around 3050 tp 3075 with the 180.

With a conventional throat design, this could be a little optimistic, but I believe Travis also has a hybrid or bore rider type throat design that he does and if that is the case, depending on barrel length, you could see 3050-ish with the 180's without running it at redline pressures.
-
Exactly....i would never run a round designed for this build in another gun.
-
Excellent choice on manufacturer, caliber, glass and accessories. I'm sure you will love it
-
H2O- A friend had a custom built by Len Bakus with verify similar specs to what your going with. The 7RM with 180 Bergers is a great general purpose combo.

Looking forward to trigger time.

sounds like an awesome rifle, looking forward to photos

I'm interested in your velocity consistency... standard deviation and extremes again, if you aren't planning to shoot it out over 600yds, you probably don't care... beyond , the math matters for holdovers. I'm running 168's and don't think you are going to see 3050 with a 180. That is pushing it hard, dont believe book data, chrono will proof your loads....single diget velocity round to round can be achieved but takes work. all in the reload process. factory not a chance you may see 30+ or so fps between loads in a box. custom stuff kind of drives you into getting your money's worth on performance. dont just settle for a load that is "good enough". you should be able to get dialed to sub .5MOA and no changes in velocities.. Then you have your new magic stick and can get crazy with it!
-
I do plan to shoot a ways. I have faith in the numbers he says. Now am I the level of shooter as the gun....nope! I'll run them over the crony and duplicate loads to the best of my ability.
-
you will like that nightforce scope, I am very comfortable with it over 1400 yds and my eyes suck! good glass, dials well. ez mile plinker, game comfy immediately out over 750yds after a day range stretching...
-
Quick update. Took a day off work and headed down to the high rises of Tumwater to meet the man. Very cool. Spent about an hour going over every question I could think of and then some. Got to touch and feel a few rifles and review scope details and this and that. Well worth the trip and now I need to just wait....come on May!

1100 yard elk rifle - carbon barrel lapua, 7-42 scope, 300 gr Smk rounds with 2000 ft lbs at 1100 yards. Tested at 902 yards last fall. Perfect! 10.5 lbs full dress. Carbon fiber bipod.

338? I haven't stretched my 340 out that far yet on anything alive, but was thinking about a custom build with 340 in mind, that thing is sweet.
-

Yep! Mite look at lapua or norma 338s. Better brass and easier to reload and slightly faster. Ive got a 340 tho, great elk rifle.
-
Yeah, no doubt about that, but i'm kind of a weatherby rat. I do however load all of my weatherby's with Norma Brass, and i'm glad i'm not the only one that thinks they are difficult to load for, yet i'm not sure why.
-
Sorry about the hi jack, H20 i'm done now. I will how ever be looking forward to seeing your build, sounds sweet.
-
No worries at all. The thread has generated some good chatter.
-
Sounds like a nice one.
-
Apparently my build has eaten it's first rounds like a champ. Got this in the email this afternoon. Like always I'm hating ;) Travis because he juuuust gives you enough to get excited about then goes quiet. For a info and update junky like myself it is killing me! Custom build problems. I suppose I shant complain as he is about a month ahead of schedule. :chuckle:
-
👍🏻
-
Well, we are at the worst and final stage. Rifle is done and proofed. All I gotta do is make it to the 20th and go get it. 4 20 dude....like far out man. Looks awesome, reports to shoot awesome....very excited and Travis will be happy to be done getting nagged! :chuckle:

-
Glad to see he is finishing up the rifles ahead of mine. I’m in the hurry up and wait mode myself.
-
The hurry up and wait is tough for sure.
-
I sent my deposit in a few weeks after yours so hopefully I’ll be shooting by June. I went with the 30 Nosler so I’ve been spending my waiting time buying hard to get reloading components and dies... but now I have everything but the gun so the hurry up and wait is starting to wear on me. When I was at his shop looking at his rifles though it is definitely worth the wait.
-
Oh yeah...looking in the safe (s) was very cool. His everyday toys are in a different league.
-
That’s for sure! I actually came across Travis by accident and didn’t even know about RBROS until I met him. I’ve been purposely avoiding looking at guns for years so that I’d stop buying so many but after seeing what he had in the safe I had to give in and buy another.
Why did you decide on the 7mm and not the 28 Nosler?
-
For me its a tried and true caliber that will get done and Travis has built a bunch that are proven. Not that anything he builds isn't....I just didn't go that route. Brass is easy to come by and won't break the bank. I know it's not as sexy as maybe the 28 or 30 but the critters won't know the difference.
-
Right on. I went with the 30 because I already had a 300 wm along with most of the other 30 calibers it seamed like. I’m sure I’ll be far more impressed by the 30 over the 300 but only because of the rifle I’ll be shooting it out of.
-
Nice. Load work is all done for Skillet so tonight I'll clean off the bench and get ready to press some 7rm out. Two more days of work. I'm a bit distracted you might say.
-
Got it picked, got my load info, got 20 made up and ready. Gun is awesome, scope is awesome, trigger is awesone, no regrets at all. Will run a few and get to know her this Sunday.

I'll post some range pics Sunday.
-
Let me know it shoots... I’m getting the itch for mine real bad... I’m jealous.
-
@CarbonHunter
@rbros
Carbon....It shoots lights out. Very happy. Trigger is great....super crisp and light. Gun is exactly as I expected. Shooting Nosler brass, CCI 250 primers, Reloder 26 (powder charge discreetly withheld), and Berger 180 VLD Hunting rounds. Here is the proof target I was provided.
-
So I took the data, loaded 20 that matched the dummy round best I could, and headed to the range. I was a little nervous. Expected recoil to be stout but manageable and was stressing....would my rounds shoot like his....would I muff shots and get my head all messed up. Told myself to relax, dry fire a few, and get it set up to shoot.
-
Well crap....had it all typed out.
Shot A is first ever shot, cold bore.
Shot B is 2nd shot after making scope adj.
Rifle left to cool and fully clean the pipe.
Shots C&D are shots 3 and 4 for me. Cold clear bore then follow up shot. Same hole. Done deal.
Rifle is outstanding. Could not be more pleased.
-
That's awesome H20hunter! Every one he builds flat out shoots! Money well spent.
-
I don’t know H2O, that’s kind a large 2 hole shot on C&D :chuckle:
-
Sorry....I promise to do better with my next 4 first shots out of a rifle. :P
-
Awesome. Bet your in love.
-
Awesome man. I mean, it's no 25-06, but even so I bet you're happy. :chuckle:
-
Wasnt there talk of new avatar upon arrival..... :-) :chuckle:
-
Now to find something other than paper to shoot :peep:

I missed the comments! Glad you seem to be getting along with the rifle

H2O that target is awesome, congrats on your new gun.

I once had a rifle that almost grouped that well until I fired the second shot.

Now that was funny, :chuckle: that's how my grouping goes sometimes.First shot great then the second shot off on its own.

Ran about 15 rounds today....all in one ragged group. Getting to know her.

Not yet.....so far I just say "the seven".

George Costanza wanted to name his first born 7 on Seinfeld so it only seems fitting here. Congrats on a sweet rifle!👍🏻

You can’t put too much thought into naming things like rifles. :chuckle: just go about life and someone will say something that just sticks with it.
That’s how one of mine got named the MBG “manbungun” :chuckle: and another “PD” but I can’t elaborate on that one without getting banned.
Looks like a sweet set up you have there!
-
just name it BMF. Self explanatory.
-
Lets see if this works.......cold clean bore typically is just under a qtr inch impact difference compared to shooting a fouled pipe. I still kept it two shots clean and fully cool....3 shots was my max consecutive string. Here is my 15 shot group so far.
-
Pic should be rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

Time to stretch its legs? Looks good!
-
Yup. I need to the barrell up to speed then should be able to dope it pretty easily. Time to get a few buddies together for a cold bore challenge fun.
-
Time to stretch its legs? Looks good!
What's that, 2...300 yards?
I'm kidding h2o, good shooting!
-
I'm taking it slow. I did poke the 6 inch plate at 220. Knocked it up and back so hard that it swung it high enough to life the plate and chain off its hooks. Hits hard.
-
Before I get going on this update first things first. Thank you to @cougforester for hosting myself and the bro in law at the Nisqually Gun Range. Very cool place and if I had one complaint it was those pesky deer that kept wandering around creating the need for a cease fire. Terrible. So anyway, today was the first day I was able to stretch my 7 out past the steel plates I normally plink at during my visits to the home range. I love my range but 220 yards just isn't long enough. Today we were able to shoot anywhere from 100 out to the known distance of 550 and the guestimate distance of about 575 or 580. The dirt berm behind the known distance target quickly became the primary interest. We began with my first attempt at the cold bore shot at 450. I had previously zeroed the gun on the plates at 220 so I have a basic dope sheet printed out. We got settled in and made some scope adjustments and loaded round number one. Took aim at the smaller plate target at 450, touched it off, rang the bell. Very nice. Known plate target at 500 that you can just see the top few inches of plate. It, the plate stand, had taken a long beating and was sagging pretty bad. I figured if I aimed at what I could see the round would drop down and hit just below my line of sight. Made the scope adjustment, let her fly, rang the bell. Very nice. Now for the long range seasoned vets out there I imagine you may yawn a bit. I understand. For me, this was exciting. This is my second ever trip to a range taking shots this long. I've never taken a shot much past 100 on game so this is all very new to me. We banged the known targets at 450, 500, and a smaller plate at 510 for a bit then had to run the deer off. While downrange we put up some paper at 550 and a few other spots and headed back to the line. Got all settled in, made some adjustments, and got my first round downrange at 550. It was a hit but low and right....maybe 8 inches off. The target was black with white lines and I was having a hard time seeing my reticle on paper. Coug says well just aim at that clay pigeon to the left. Of course I should. We figure the dirt was about 25 yards past the known distance of 550. I did have a rangefinder in the truck but never crossed my mind to get it. Settled in, no more pigeon. Now I'm excited. Bro in law had his 6.5, man bun, and handloads and was taking shots as well. There was one remaining intact pigeon. He was right on it, an inch or two off here, inch or two off there. I load a round, no more pigeon. Now I'm probably borderline irritating those around me with my grinning. We than began picking off pieces of pigeons. Now I did not hit every chip I was aiming at but I was well over 50% impact on the smaller pieces we were picking off. I did a little tracking test...take a shot at distance, bring the scope back to 200 zero, whack the plate, run it back up to 575 (7moa up from zero), let er rip. Repeatability was dead on shot after shot. Repeatability of the gun, dead on. Repeatability of my handloads, dead on. Coug just kept shaking his head, saying man that is nuts. Yep, dead on nuts. He took a poke, first shot for him behind the gun. Found a chip of pigeon, held, fired, no more pigeon. Gun is now broken in as I've go just over 100 rounds down the pipe. @rbros Travis said break it in, get it done right the first 20 or 25 rounds, then run it and get the barrel up to speed. Well Travis, done and done. I was happy when I got the gun, I was happy when I began getting used to the gun. Now, not only am I happy as ever but I am confident that I am heading in the right direction. I'm getting good data for putting together a true dope chart for the gun and if all goes well I'm told we may get to go again next month. I hope so as I'll be bringing a case of clays to put on the berm and won't leave my rangefinder in the truck. Great trip, well worth the drive, Coug I know I said it a few time but thank you again for the offer. Next time we gotta get my bum knee @bknilvr00 down there to see what he and his man bun sporting 6.5 and do. I'll bring the clays.
-
Well good morning. Only update is the gun is a tack driver and I love watching a few folks get behind it cold and whack a target quite a ways off.
My question us this.....can I get a recommendation or two on a brand or type of buttstock accy. I'd like just a touch of cheek padding and ideally a dope card window.
@rbros Travis......only a few months from now we are gonna have a dead moose and a bloodied rifle.
-
I've got a tactical sharpshooter on my 6mm. I was the same. I needed just a touch of height.
