Title: GPW Bear Hunt/high buck scout trip
Post by: MrE4853 on January 07, 2018, 12:52:41 PM
Just now getting around to posting this. A couple buddies and I made our first trip into the GPW this August. We did a bit of paper scouting and headed out for a long weekend.  Our original plan was to get up to Schaefer lake but upon seeing the options on the way in we called an audible and stayed on the trail. I won’t say where we camped but I’m sure most will know from the pictures. We left the trailhead around 830 in the morning and we made it to the camp site on the campsite around 645, not too bad for just over 15 miles. We were able to glass up on decent bear before dark but no time to put a move on him. The next morning we glasses up a decent buck in the same area the bear was the night before. After breakfast we hiked up into some higher basins and glassed all day until day with no luck. Sunday morning we glassed for a bit with no luck and decided to head out as we had a long hike to the truck. Despite not having any luck it was a great trip and fantastic scenery. In all it was close to 45 miles in three days which was a bit much and we should have stayed one more night. We decided not to do the high hunt there because of the distance in and the number of trips it would take to get animals out. Also learning that outfitters pack clients in to that area didn’t exactly hype us up to hike that far in to hunt with a crowd.

That area is very popular. Problem is too that a lot of hikers go into that area so that will scare the wildlife there.

Yeah, we did see some hikers too. I am interest in some off trail areas nearby, if anyone has experience in that area I’d love to pick their brain a little for some general information.

All the hikers we encountered up this year were friendly to us. They would stop and make small talk and ask what we were hunting for.

That area below Boulder Pass is one of the more popular areas during the high hunt. The outfitter for that area takes in a couple drop camps at the horse camp, then there is the hike in hunters. Its a beautiful area for sure.

Were you up there with Brian Inderbitzin and Brian Rittereiser by chance? I know they were back there about the same time. Feel free to shoot me a PM, I know that part of the GPW pretty well.

I've spent some time in that general area around glacier peak, shot a few nice bears and my dad has taken several nice deer out of there. Unfortunately every year their seems to be more hikers and hunters in the area. Beautiful country and always makes for a nice getaway
