New Year means New Elk Camp. Yup, Moving to Pioneer Elk Zone with a general Archery A Tag in 2018. Any of you guys on here hunted the area before? I will do some scouting during the spring and summer to learn the road system and as an excuse to be in the woods. If you have some success photos or area photos you want to share that would be great. Any info is welcome. Thanks!

See you there

When I hunted I backpacked in and was basically stuck in one place. I’d find a half dozen spots and some glassing points and be ready to jump around from spot to spot. It should be a great hunt for you and it’ll make you all but give up on hunting WA.
-
Most broadcasted and heavily hunted non resident unit probably in the state id look elsewhere

that would be 22 or 39 id think. all the same it still floors me how guys feel the need to come online and announce there hunting plans and specific units. what exactly do you get from it?
-
Its no joke call the bio they will even tell you they get nore calls on that zone alone than anyother zone in the state and its mainly non resident

39 has no OTC archery elk season.
Can not believe the number of people I hear of archery hunting the pioneer zone.
-
I’d go back to the pioneer zone in a second. Also, I’m pretty sure that there as much PUBLIC LAND in that zone as there is on any 18 Washington elk units put together.

I think about half as many as 22. our fish and game has a pretty great web site that shows actual numbers of various filters. including tags bought by year/zone. its a big area that takes a pretty good drive to get too. I wouldn't worry about out of state competition much in there, bigger the area the more to scout

The Pioneer zone is amazing, no people and elk bugling close to every road and trail....its idahos best kept secret!!!
-
39 isn't in the Pioneer zone, it's 36A, 49 and 50 if I remember correctly. I hunted 36a three years ago. Steep, rugged country.

Yeah, there is an elk behind every tree according to Eastman's or wait was it Huntinfool....oh it doesn't matter there are tons of 350 class bulls just waiting begging for an arrow everywhere in the Pioneer Zone. :chuckle:
-
Arrow? I heard the 380s don’t get down next to the roads until rifle season opens up...but that’s a draw tag. Probably best to go with the sure 350 and a OTC archery tag.
-
The reason Idaho has OTC units for elk is the terrain weeds 90% of the hunters out in non roaded areas and the road areas are crowded like anywhere else. For hunters willing to put in the work and vertical miles its a good option, Id say that's 5% of hunters maybe less.
-
There's no Elk in Idaho. Just sayin'

Hopefully they get some info that aids in their hunt!
I've hunted 36A. Its been 18 years, so the only information I have that is still relevant relates to topography. It was not as rugged as some might say. Not as rugged as most WA wilderness areas. Prob better to backpack in, which works there because there are large roadless sections.

Satellite photo of 4 elk in a 36A meadow.
-
Most definitely some elk there. Get off the roads and back in a way and you’ll do ok.
-
You know what they say...if you can see 4 elk on google earth, there’s 400 in the nearby trees. I’m changing my whole plan this year...PIONEER ZONE!!!
-
36A is so loaded with elk, they can't hide from Google!
-
What the heck I am on my way! See you all in the pioneer zone this fall!
-
Nobody move. I’ll contact IDFG to see if we can get a groupon for 25 or so NR tags!!
-
No hurry. Those elk are in those same meadows every time that I've looked! I think IDFG plants them there for non-residents. Sorry Idaho Guy...
-
Relax. Those are potatoes.
-
Quit peeing on my parade this fall I’m headed south! Sounds like a few hundred thousand non residents hunt there how could that many non resident elk hunters be wrong?
