In the off-season, I'd like to keep my dog's skills fresh with some live bird training from time to time. Unfortunately, being in Seattle, I don't have the option of having my own pigeon coup with traps, and the drive to Cook Canyon can be tough. I was curious if there are people closer to the city who have the equipment and some property and are willing to share. I'd be happy to pitch in some money, some beer, or some time and effort around a property/house as a thank you.

Also I buy pigeons from guys around seattle. I googled racing pigeons and found a couple of guys that would sell me birds for $3 a piece when they would cull them out of their coup. Some of the pest control guys want to get rid of birds as well.

Happy belongs to a club. Rainer retrievers? It is a group of folks that work thier dogs year round. I know most use Cherry Valley WDFW land, or a couple of private pieces in the Carnation river valley. Carlson Kennels and Pepper Ridge farms?

I'll also check into local clubs. Rainier retrievers sounds like it may not be the right fit with my dog being a pointer, but it's possible.
I'll report back in a bit when I have more info.

I called some pest control guy, first thing out of his mouth was ask if I had a hunting dog "ya" then he went on a long rant about the birds just flying back to where he trapped them in the first place making his clients mad :chuckle:

Thanks for the tips Jagermiester. Do you keep the birds at your house so they return, or just take them out and consider it a $3 charge per point (apologies if it's a naive question)?
I keep the birds at my house in a little coup and then used and reuse them. I have a weight that I attach to their feet so they can fly but then coast down to the ground. A lot of time I just keep a couple in my vest that I can throw up in the air after the dog points a bird that I have in a crab bait box. Sometimes I take the weight off and shoot em or throw one without a weight when the dog blows through the sent.

I kinda fumble through it but I think its good for the dogs.

He thought his clients would remember what the pigeons looked like and recognize them as the same ones that he trapped the week before. :o
I mean kinda sounds like job security to me if one makes it out alive. Most the time they just die or get shot after a while.

Addicted2hunting, I have a GSP, so definitely in the category of a versatile hunting dog (though her retrieves are not amazing). I'd be interested to learn more about the NAVHDA, though I can't make it on the 11th (I quickly checked the site).
