Title: New project time
Post by: yorketransport on January 29, 2018, 07:31:45 PM
I'm getting set up to start the next project and all I have left to do is decide on the chambering. The idea is to build a hunting rifle to bridge the gap between my two other go to hunting rifles, the CZ 527 6.5 Grendel and a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan 375 Ruger. I think I have it narrowed down to to one of these three:

Left to right: 300/375 Ruger, 270/375 Ruger, 270 RUM

The 300/375 in the picture has a 181 Hammer Hunter seated to 3.600", the 270/375 Ruger has a 130 E-Tip seated the the BT to the neck shoulder junction at 3.575" and the 270 RUM is a 130gr E-Tip seated to 3.750".

I'm a huge fan of the 375 Ruger case because it offers significantly more capacity than the 300 Win Mag without needing to worry about mag length issues. Basically it's what Nosler should have gone with for their new rounds. :chuckle: The 300/375 holds 99.6gr of H20 compared to the 90.3gr of the Federal 300 Win Mag cases I have. With the 181gr bullet seated to 3.600" in the Ruger case and the 300 Win Mag case, the Ruger case has 8.9gr more usable case capacity. That's pretty significant! Ballistically it will duplicate a 300 Weatherby, think 215gr bullets at about 3000fps.

The 270/375 Ruger holds 98.9gr of H20 and would be a great candidate for the newer heavy weight 270 bullets out there. It will duplicate the 270/300 Weatherby wildcat. I haven't spent much time with the 270s, so I kind of feel like it's worth trying. This one should hang around 3200fps with the 150gr bullets.

The 270 RUM is an easy one. I actually had a 270 RUM for a while but only put about 40 rounds through it before I sold the gun. I still have a 270 RUM reamer sitting in my parts drawer so I thought maybe it was time to give it another go. The last barrel I had was a 1-10" twist; any new 270 I build would use a 1-8" twist. The last 270 RUM I had was shooting 140gr bullets at around 3550 fps with a 30" barrel and would probably be in the 3400fps range with the 150gr bullets from a 26" barrel.

I'm leaning towards the 30 caliber just because either of the 270s would be very close to the 6.5 Badger which I already have. Of course this rifle will be a hunting rifle as opposed a heavier target gun like 6.5 Badger. The down side to the 30 caliber is that it's a 30 caliber, and they're lame. :chuckle:

7mm/375 with 197gn SMK would be my choice  :chuckle:
I love that 375 as well. I've always wanted to shorten one for an AR10 with a 6.5 or 7mm. I think its the only magnum case that would reliably function in the large AR's.
Ok sorry York, threadjack over.

Taking into account Hammer bullets selection of .277 bullets. Along with issues of overall cartridge length and action size. From a real world Performance stand point without a bunch hassle. I would go with the .270-.375 Ruger. I would also make a contribution to the Reamer you spec out.👍👍👍

I have a reamer print and a couple of dummy rounds made up for that exact use! Cases were essentially long necked RCMs in 7mm and 6.5mm.

You've disappointed me! I would have thought you'd be all over the full length RUM. Either way, I think I'm leaning towards one of the 270s. They're starting to grow on me.

Ok, well I have a barrel we can guinea pig that reamer on..

What about necking down the 28 Nosler to 270?  Case length and capacity would be very similar to the 270-375 Ruger but with a lot less necking down.  This size case may not interest you but if you'd like to give something like a 270 Blaser a try I could send you some 7mm Blaser Mag cases to neck down if you'd like.

If you go 270 something or other would the 170 Berger be on you list of bullets to try?

You're right, either the 26 or 28 Nosler would give pretty much identical capacity. I thought about doing that but the slightly smaller diameter of the Ruger case makes it an easy swap for any of the belted mags without having to change the feed lips. Stepping up to the .550" diameter of the RUM and Nosler case means you'll typically need to do some work to get them to feed. Plus, Hornady 375 Ruger brass is always available for about $1.05 per case. If you wanted to get fancy you could order Nosler 375 Ruger brass for about $1.65 per case. 28 Nosler brass is only available from Nosler, it's twice the cost of 375 Ruger brass, and it's always out of stock! The big bonus to the Ruger case is that I already use i in the 375 and 338/375 guns so I could buy 500 cases and have a lifetime supply of brass for 3 different guns. All the 375 Ruger brass I've had has been very good and it's holding up to around 6 firings per case.

I actually thought about the Blaser case but it wouldn't offer much improvement over a standard 270 WSM. If I was trying to keep it within 3.400" OAL I would have gone with the Blaser case. I'll be able to work with an OAL of 3.700" with the parts I'd like to use (at least at the moment) so I thought I'd try and make the most of it.

For bullets I'm thinking the 170gr Berger and the 168 Hammer Hunter. I need to decided if I really want to wait on a 1-7" twist though.

270/375 Ruger would be intriguing for sure! Jack O'Connor would be interested I think😉

I didn't even notice that was in the background...... Maybe I'll spin the press around and take a new picture with the "Friday Night Flow Chart" shirt in the background instead. That way nobody's offended. :chuckle:

And for the record, I'd appreciate it if the "trolls" would stop trying to cause trouble. cough, cough, Jay.sharkbait.... I'd like to keep this conversation respectful.

Ok

I'm sorry......
This is my fault.........
I'll try to do a better job next time........

Now

Why choose such pedestrian cases for this wildcat? Shirley, something more unusual would be a better fit?

Maybe I should work with the 6.5 Creedmoor case. I hear that it cures cancer when combined with Reloader 26. The really obscure stuff is on hold until I can find the right donor action. Or until the national trade deficit is reduced enough to allow for more frivolous and reckless spending. :chuckle:  When that happens, I think a 270 McFiddlesticks Flanged Nitro Express is in order!

When you going to take and make a fat Mac?

Any of these should kill a deer at 100 with proper bullets.

Probably skin it too

I had a 50 BMG around 10 years ago and I just never learned to love it. They're big, heavy, loud and don't offer any real ballistic advantage. It was awful fun to shoot rocks with though!

Ok how about a vegan version? Neck the fat Mac down to a .243 caliber?

Filling in around the two listed, is the 375 a good 1000 yard big game rifle or would it be better necked down to 30 or 7mm or 338?  Ive heard its case of choice over lapua and norma for many 338 builds.

The 375s are becoming a better option with all the new bullets. I had quite a few rounds (600+) through my 375 BME before I retired it. I think the 338s are still about the best option for 1000 yard hunting. For this build I'm not really looking for a super long range gun, just an all-round hunter. That's how I ended up going down to the relatively small bore options.

I think I've settled on the 270/375 Ruger for this project. I'm just making a couple little tweaks to the reamer specs and I'll get it ordered in the next couple of days. I'm going to nail down the barrel maker as well. There aren't a lot of options for 1-7" twist 270s but there are a couple good ones to choose from.

The next step is settling on a stock. The front runners right now are the McMillan A3 or a Joel Russo sporter. This is the Russo stock

I love the idea of a nice wood stock and I just can't find a synthetic stock that I really like. I'm just not sure how I feel about dragging a beautiful wood stock around in the woods with me.

I bet he wouldn't.
Jack was pretty clear that one of the factors he enjoyed so much about the 270 was it's ability to be a flat shooting big game rifle without excessive recoil that you start getting with more powder in the magnum rifles.  That's why he never messed around much with the 270 Weatherby.
