Title: Dog training
Post by: widgeonwacher on February 21, 2018, 01:29:51 PM
So my buddy has a 13 week old lab and she has no drive to retrieve or play fetch or anything. So I was wondering what tricks there are to get her to retrieve, cause I’ve tried everything

Something similar, tie a wing onto a fishing rod and flop it around in the air, on the ground, wherever to build that excitement.  Where were the breeders when they should have been doing stuff like that with the pup?  Hopefully not a "professional"....

Make what ever you do a BIG deal. Lots of praise even if it is only picked up at first. Get right down on the ground with the pup and play with the toy. Make the pup want it real bad.

I had the same thing happen when I picked up my Chessie. The only difference was mine was 9 months old and had zero training from the previous owner and didn't know any basic obedience let alone how to swim.. I made it play time and would throw socks, wings, stuff animals. Make everything a big deal like Come get some said with tons of praise. She is on her second season now and is doing fantastic.

What's a good (the best) book to buy for training a lab for both waterfowl and upland?
