If a guy wanted a guided elk hunt (trophy), where would he go?? Lets pretend cost is not an issue (well within reason...LOL) and no High Fence hunt. Would prefer a 340+ class bull for the money and assume it would be a ranch hunt with high success rates.
Where would you look or have you gone with good success and good customer service.
......and go!!

I'd look at region 7 in Wyoming, wagonhound ranch comes to mind.

New Mexico, lots of options

That would be on my short list. It takes about 8 years for a non res to draw unit 7, however.
-
Re you looking just for a trophy or fabulous scenery like the Bob Marshall has. Maybe a true Wilderness experience?

Third for New Mexico. Lots of reservation hunts down there with big bulls
-
AZ White Mtns Apache tribe MONSTER ELK!!

I would do Chama, New Mexico if money was not a consideration, LOL

AZ White Mtns Apache tribe MONSTER ELK!!
x2 or Bull ridge guide service out of nevada! I dont think either of these hunts would fall into a cost within reason :chuckle:

More looking for a quality bull. I am turning 41 this year and am starting to think I will never draw in this state. I have shot elk over my years....just never a nice bull. I hunt wilderness and definitely enjoy the "hunt" and "Scenery"....but this quest is for a bull worth mounting and putting on my all. May be the only big bull I ever shoot.
-
look at J&J outfitters in wyoming

It was like 10 to 15 grand there if I remember right. I seen some success pics over the last few years and I believe 340 is the bottom end of the scale.
-
I would probably call him up:
http://www.montanaoutwest.com/
I don't care if I kill the biggest bull on the hill, I just want a great camp, fun people to hunt with, hunting harder than I want and a chance at a 300" bull if I am lucky.
-
Ellensburg unit 334 spike hunt! Should be able to eclipse 340+ no problem.
-
With no points I'd look to New Mexico for sure.
-
I'd shop some of the outfitters in BC and Alberta that hunt the Canadian Rockies. Many do combo deer and elk hunts that run concurrent. Not neccessarily the best "trophy" region but could be a good value hunt with the exchange rate.
-
The place Joe Rogan hunted with Cam Haines in Utah.
-
Nice video. Would be fun to hunt with those two.
-
Vancouver Island for Roosevelt. Not even a doubt.
-
Alberta late horseback hunt, or Wyoming late horseback hunt... that latter I値l experience in the next 5 years when I draw...
PS, lets talk about deer, they池e way cooler...
-
Ted Turner's Flying D Ranch in Montana. It's called little Yellow Stone with all the animals there. 99% success rate, huge bulls, $15,000.

This. I know a guide that works that ranch. 340 is very doable with several bulls in the 360 range getting killed every year. General tag so need for points.

Yep that痴 where I壇 go

Out of curiosity how many points do you have for quality elk?

13..... I think. When they did the switch....I magically lost 2 points. Oh well.
-
New Mexico. Worked with a few native New Mexicans this past summer that guide when laid off. Seen impressive pictures of bulls that are shot.
Their cooking is pretty darn good too.

That's a decent amount. I'd give it a few more years of putting in before thinking of going outta state. I personally know multiple people that have drawn with way less points including myself and have killed 340+bc bulls and thats just in the last few years. I know the waiting game sucks and our point system isn't the best, but it will happen for you soon!

:yeah: hang in there buddy, you will get drawn soon
Just like Waiting on the Entiat late deer tag :bash:
-
Your still to young to worry about never getting drawn...give it a couple more years. :chuckle:
Besides that all the advice that has been given is solid.
-
Hell, I知 30, with 16 bull and 16 quality and I知 looking for out of state guided elk hunts as well, no faith in our draw. Could be another 16 years.

:yeah:
If only 13 points figure You have less than average chance given the way points are squared and average odds are like 1:100 or less so do the math...... :(
-
I hunted Wyoming area 7 last year with Elk Mountain Outfitters - not a fancy lodge hunt but comfortable and lots of nice bulls to hunt
-
I am planning a guided, out of state, elk hunt in the next couple years to basically guarantee I get a solid bull before I die.....LOL!!! If / When I do draw in this state it will by my second chance at a nice bull. I have a bucket list that needs to start getting checked off.....life is to short to waste time.
My kids are also starting to hunt in the next year or two, so I suspect my trigger time will drop dramatically. At this point in my hunting career, I am more excited about my kids dropping the hammer on animals. I will be the camp pack mule, cook, gutter, skinner, etc. If I get one after my kids that will be the icing on the cake. I just need to get my bull and a moose before I die......hopefully that gives me a few years. :chuckle: :chuckle:
I have been researching everyone suggestions and all are viable. Anyone with relevant, first hand experience at any of the suggestions would be great.

If you go kill a nice bull out of state it値l probably take some pressure off you too when you do actually draw a decent elk tag.
-
Pennsylvania; my home state. Decent chance of a 350-400 inch bull only about 2 hours from my home stomping grounds. Plus I can take a couple friends; and one would be my guide. Of course I'd have to get drawn for it first.
-
I would love an Oklahoma Bull tag as well.
Only a quota of 30 this year. Last year 100% success rate.
Some seriously huge bulls in the wilderness areas.
-
Look to where the largest bulls are coming from over the years and find a good guide in Montana
-
Straight to Shane Barbour's front door all the way! :yeah:
-
The Vancouver island always seems really cool to me. I don't think there's alot of 340" bulls though.
-
Surprised only one person mentioned the Bob Marshall - I've always wanted to do a September hunt in there, just to get back into all that Wilderness. Seems to me that's a pretty unique location. You're not going to take a huge bull, but I think you could have a reasonable chance at taking one worth putting on the wall, 300-320?. If the question was just for getting the BIGGEST bull, I'd go with New Mexico or Arizona, but for the overall experience of a true pack-in, wilderness hunt, I'd go with the Bob Marshall.
-
Arizona or New Mexico indian reservation . Casey Brooks in the pics. Bring big bucks....I hear it's around $20K
-
I think I would look into British Columbia, as well as Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.
-
tag for when I have money.

As much as I would love to have a trophy of that magnitude, I am not willing to pay 20K for a bull. I would rather buy two or three hunts for 6K-10K and harvest 300-350 class bulls. Those are some darn nice bulls though.
reality is this hunt will likely take place in the next 2-3 years so I have a little time to plan. I want a reputable ranch / guide.
-
AZ White Mtns Apache tribe MONSTER ELK!!
:yeah: That's where I'd go if I had an extra $40K or more to spend.
-
Ted turner"s flying D ranch in Montana. Huge Bulls 99% success rate. 15K
-
Check out Idaho for Wildlife on Facebook. A guide owns that site, her name in Billijo Beck. She gets some nice bulls every year. Hunts out of Idaho near the WY border I believe...
-
I think someone already mentioned wagonhound ranch in wy? Anyways I watched a hunting show last night on the ranch and it looks riduculous they had big bulls almost running them over from every direction haha. If I was to go guided I would check that place out looks like cost is 7-10k which is still high but not 15-20k like some of the others
